Prophecy Against the Shepherds of Israel
34 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 (A)“Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy, and say to them, even to the shepherds, Thus says the Lord God: (B)Ah, shepherds of Israel (C)who have been feeding yourselves! (D)Should not shepherds feed the sheep? 3 (E)You eat the fat, you clothe yourselves with the wool, (F)you slaughter the fat ones, but you do not feed the sheep. 4 (G)The weak you have not strengthened, the sick you have not healed, (H)the injured you have not bound up, (I)the strayed you have not brought back, (J)the lost you have not sought, and with force and (K)harshness you have ruled them. 5 (L)So they were scattered, because there was no shepherd, and (M)they became food for all the wild beasts. My sheep were scattered; 6 they wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. My sheep were scattered over all the face of the earth, (N)with none to search or seek for them.
7 “Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 8 (O)As I live, declares the Lord God, surely because (P)my sheep have become a prey, and my sheep have become food for all the wild beasts, since there was no shepherd, and because my shepherds have not searched for my sheep, but the shepherds have fed themselves, and have not fed my sheep, 9 therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 10 Thus says the Lord God, (Q)Behold, I am against the shepherds, and (R)I will require my sheep at their hand and (S)put a stop to their feeding the sheep. (T)No longer shall the shepherds feed themselves. (U)I will rescue my sheep from their mouths, that they may not be food for them.
The Lord God Will Seek Them Out
11 “For thus says the Lord God: (V)Behold, I, I (W)myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out. 12 As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on (X)a day of clouds and (Y)thick darkness. 13 And I will bring them out from the peoples (Z)and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land. And I will feed them on (AA)the mountains of Israel, by the ravines, and in all the inhabited places of the country. 14 (AB)I will feed them with good pasture, and on the mountain heights of Israel shall be their grazing land. (AC)There they shall lie down in good grazing land, and on rich pasture they shall feed on the mountains of Israel. 15 (AD)I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, (AE)and I myself will make them lie down, declares the Lord God. 16 (AF)I will seek the lost, (AG)and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, and (AH)the fat and the strong I will destroy.[a] I will feed them in justice.
17 “As for you, my flock, thus says the Lord God: (AI)Behold, I judge between sheep and sheep, between rams and (AJ)male goats. 18 Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture, that you must tread down with your feet the rest of your pasture; and to drink of (AK)clear water, that you must muddy the rest of the water with your feet? 19 And must my sheep eat what you have trodden with your feet, and drink what you have muddied with your feet?
20 “Therefore, thus says the Lord God to them: Behold, I, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. 21 Because you push with side and shoulder, and (AL)thrust at all the (AM)weak with your horns, till you have scattered them abroad, 22 I will rescue[b] my flock; (AN)they shall no longer be a prey. And I will judge between sheep and sheep. 23 And (AO)I will set up over them one shepherd, (AP)my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. 24 And (AQ)I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them. (AR)I am the Lord; I have spoken.
The Lord's Covenant of Peace
25 (AS)“I will make with them a covenant of peace and (AT)banish wild beasts from the land, (AU)so that they may dwell securely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods. 26 And I will make them and the places all around my hill (AV)a blessing, and (AW)I will send down the showers in their season; they shall be (AX)showers of blessing. 27 (AY)And the trees of the field shall yield their fruit, and the earth shall yield its increase, (AZ)and they shall be secure in their land. And (BA)they shall know that I am the Lord, when (BB)I break the bars of their yoke, and (BC)deliver them from the hand of those who enslaved them. 28 (BD)They shall no more be a prey to the nations, (BE)nor shall the beasts of the land devour them. (BF)They shall dwell securely, and none shall make them afraid. 29 And I will provide for them (BG)a renowned place for planting so that (BH)they shall no more be consumed with hunger in the land, and no longer (BI)suffer the reproach of the nations. 30 And they shall know that (BJ)I am the Lord their God with them, and that they, the house of Israel, are my people, declares the Lord God. 31 And you are my sheep, (BK)human sheep of my pasture, and I am your God, declares the Lord God.”

34 O SENHOR me disse:
2 —Homem mortal, profetize a respeito dos pastores de Israel. Profetize e dê esta mensagem aos pastores. Eu, o Senhor DEUS, digo isto: “Ouçam, pastores de Israel, que só costumam cuidar de si mesmos! Não era para os pastores cuidarem do rebanho? 3 Vocês comem o queijo, usam a lã e matam as ovelhas mais gordas, mas não cuidam do rebanho! 4 Não fortalecem a ovelha fraca, não cuidam da doente, nem curam a que está ferida. Não tentam trazer a que se desvia nem procuram pelas perdidas. E abusaram das fortes[a] e as trataram com crueldade! 5 Eles as dispersaram sem que tivessem pastor, assim elas se tornaram presa dos animais selvagens. 6 Minhas ovelhas caminham sem rumo pelos montes e colinas. Foram dispersas por toda a face da terra, e ninguém foi procurar por elas.
7 —“Portanto, pastores, escutem bem o que eu, o SENHOR, vou falar. 8 Eu, o Senhor DEUS, prometo por mim mesmo que vocês, pastores, serão castigados. Farei isso por vocês terem tratado as minhas ovelhas como um saque, por terem deixado que elas ficassem sem pastor à mercê dos animais selvagens, por nem sequer terem tentado ir atrás delas, por não terem se preocupado com elas e sim consigo mesmos. 9 Portanto, pastores, escutem bem o que eu, o SENHOR, vou falar. 10 Prestem atenção! Eu, o Senhor DEUS, estou contra esses pastores e demandarei deles as minhas ovelhas! Expulsarei esses pastores, não os deixarei pastorear as minhas ovelhas nunca mais! Resgatarei as minhas ovelhas das suas bocas, e os pastores já não se alimentarão mais delas”.

11 —Eu, o Senhor DEUS, irei procurar as minhas ovelhas! 12 Eu as pastorearei como um pastor pastoreia o seu rebanho quando anda entre suas ovelhas que se dispersaram. Assim as pastorearei. Resgatarei as minhas ovelhas de todos os lugares aonde foram dispersas num dia escuro e cheio de nuvens. 13 Trarei as minhas ovelhas das nações, e as reunirei, e farei com que venham de novo à sua terra. Então as pastorearei nos montes de Israel, pelos vales e por todos os povos do país. 14 Pastorearei as minhas ovelhas nos melhores pastos e seu prado se estenderá até os montes mais altos de Israel. Descansarão em bons pastos e se alimentarão nos melhores pastos dos montes de Israel. 15 Eu mesmo cuidarei das minhas ovelhas! Farei que descansem. Eu, o Senhor DEUS, afirmo isto. 16 Procurarei pela perdida, irei pela desgarrada, cuidarei da ferida, fortalecerei a doente, protegerei[b] a gorda e forte. Pastorearei todas elas com justiça.
17 —Eu, o Senhor DEUS, digo isto: “Rebanho meu, eu farei justiça quando discutirem entre vocês, entre uma ovelha e outra, entre os carneiros e os bodes. 18 Não é suficiente para vocês ter bons pastos para se alimentar? Por que vocês têm que pisotear o que resta? Quando você bebe de águas cristalinas, por que deixa turva a água que fica para as demais?”
19 —Minhas ovelhas se alimentam dos campos que pisoteiam e bebem da água que sujam com as suas patas. 20 Portanto, Eu, o Senhor DEUS, serei quem julgue entre as ovelhas gordas e as magras. 21 Porque vocês empurraram a si mesmos com os lados do corpo e as costas, e atacaram dando chifradas às débeis, até elas se dispersarem. 22 Mas eu resgatarei as minhas ovelhas e já não serão sua presa. Eu farei justiça entre uma ovelha e outra. 23 Então escolherei o meu servo para ser seu pastor e cuidar delas. Um descendente de Davi as pastoreará. Ele será seu pastor! 24 Então eu, o SENHOR, serei seu Deus, e o meu servo Davi as guiará. Eu, o SENHOR, afirmo isto. 25 Então farei uma aliança de paz com elas: farei desaparecer do país as feras para que as minhas ovelhas descansem seguras no deserto e durmam em paz na floresta.
26 —Então meu povo será uma bênção ao redor do meu monte. Enviarei chuvas no momento certo e estas serão uma bênção. 27 Até as árvores do campo darão fruto, a terra dará as suas colheitas e elas viverão seguras na sua terra. Quando eu quebrar seu jugo e as libertar daqueles que as escravizam, então saberão que eu sou o SENHOR. 28 Já não serão presa das nações e os animais selvagens não as comerão. Viverão seguras e ninguém as espantará. 29 Darei a elas uma terra fértil e nunca mais terão fome. Não terão mais que engolir os insultos das nações. 30 Então saberão que eu, o SENHOR, seu Deus, estou com elas, e que elas são meu povo, Israel. Eu, o Senhor DEUS, afirmo isto. 31 Vocês são minhas ovelhas, meu rebanho de seres humanos no meu pasto, e eu sou seu Deus! Eu, o Senhor DEUS, falei isto.

The Leaders Are like Shepherds
34 The ·Lord spoke his word [L word of the Lord came] to me, saying: 2 “·Human [T Son of man; 2:1], prophesy against the shepherds of Israel [C the leaders]. Prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Lord God says: ·How terrible it will be for [L Woe to] the shepherds of Israel who feed only themselves! ·Why don’t [Shouldn’t] the shepherds feed the flock? 3 You eat the ·milk curds [or fat], and you clothe yourselves with the wool. You kill the ·fat sheep [choice/fat ones], but you do not feed the flock. 4 You have not ·made the weak strong [strengthened the weak]. You have not healed the sick or put bandages on those that were hurt. You have not brought back those who strayed away or searched for the lost [Matt. 18:12; Luke 15:4]. But you have ruled the sheep with ·cruel force [violence and harshness]. 5 The sheep were scattered, because there was no shepherd, and they became food for every wild animal. 6 My flock wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. They were scattered all over the face of the earth, and no one searched or looked for them.
7 “‘So, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord. This is what the Lord God says: 8 As surely as I live, my flock has ·been caught [become prey] and eaten by all the wild animals, because the flock has no shepherd. The shepherds did not search for my flock. No, they fed themselves instead of my flock. 9 So, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord. 10 This is what the Lord God says: [L Look; T Behold] I am against the shepherds. I will ·blame them for what has happened to my sheep [hold them accountable; L demand my sheep from their hand] and will not let them tend the flock anymore. Then the shepherds will stop feeding themselves, and I will ·take [rescue] my flock from their mouths so they will no longer be their food.
11 “‘This is what the Lord God says: I, myself, will search for my sheep and ·take care of [look after; or look for] them. 12 As a shepherd ·take care of [looks after; or looks for] his scattered flock when ·it is found [or they are with him], I will ·take care of [look after; or look for] my sheep. I will ·save [rescue] them from all the places where they were scattered on a cloudy and dark day. 13 I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the countries. I will bring them to their own land and ·pasture [feed] them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines, and in all the places where people live in the land. 14 I will feed them in a good pasture, and they will ·eat grass [graze] on the ·high mountains [mountain heights] of Israel. They will lie down on good ·ground where they eat grass [pasture], and they will eat in rich grassland on the mountains of Israel. 15 I will feed my flock and ·lead them to rest [have them lie down], says the Lord God [Ps. 23; Is. 40:11]. 16 I will search for the lost, bring back those that strayed away [v. 4], put bandages on those that were hurt, and make the weak strong. But I will destroy those sheep that are fat and strong. I will ·tend [shepherd; feed] the sheep with ·fairness [justice].
17 “‘This is what the Lord God says: As for you, my flock, I will judge between one sheep and another, between the ·male sheep [rams] and the male goats [Matt. 25:32–33]. 18 Is it not enough for you to eat grass in the good ·land [pasture]? Must you ·crush [trample] the rest of the grass with your feet? Is it not enough for you to drink clear water? Must you make the rest of the water muddy with your feet? 19 Must my flock eat what you ·crush [trample], and must they drink what you make muddy with your feet?
20 “‘So this is what the Lord God says to them: [L Look; T Behold] I, myself, will judge between the fat sheep and the thin sheep. 21 You push with your side and with your shoulder, and you ·knock down [butt; thrust at] all the weak sheep with your horns until you have ·forced them away [or scattered them abroad]. 22 So I will save my flock; they will ·not be hurt anymore [L no longer be prey]. I will judge between one sheep and another. 23 Then I will put over them one shepherd, my servant David [Is. 11:1; Jer. 30:9; Hos. 3:5; Mic. 5:2; C the Messiah envisioned as a new David]. He will feed them and tend them and be their shepherd. 24 Then I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David will be a ·ruler [prince] among them. I, the Lord, have spoken.
25 “‘I will make an ·agreement [covenant; treaty] of peace with ·my sheep [L them] and will remove ·harmful animals [wild beasts] from the land. Then the sheep will live safely in the ·desert [wilderness] and sleep in the woods. 26 I will ·bless them and let them live around my hill [or make them and the regions around my hill a blessing]. I will cause ·the rains [showers] to come ·when it is time [in their season]; there will be showers to bless them. 27 Also the trees ·in the countryside [L of the field] will ·give [yield] their fruit, and the land will give its ·harvest [produce; increase]. And the sheep will ·be safe [live securely] on their land. Then they will know that I am the Lord when I break the bars of their ·captivity [L yoke] and ·save [rescue] them from the ·power [L hand] of those who made them slaves. 28 They will not be ·led captive by [prey for] the nations again. The wild animals will not ·eat [devour] them, but they will live safely, and no one will make them afraid. 29 I will give them a place famous for its good crops, so they will no longer ·suffer from hunger [be victims of famine] in the land. They will not suffer the insults of other nations anymore. 30 Then they will know that I, the Lord their God, am with them. The nation [L house] of Israel will know that they are my people, says the Lord God. 31 You, my sheep, are the human sheep ·I care for [L of my pasture; Ps. 95:7; 100:3], and I am your God, says the Lord God.’”
