30 “But as for you, son of man, your people[a] (who are talking about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses) say to one another,[b] ‘Come hear the word that comes[c] from the Lord.’ 31 They come to you in crowds,[d] and they sit in front of you as[e] my people. They hear your words, but do not obey[f] them. For they talk lustfully,[g] and their heart is set on[h] their own advantage.[i] 32 Realize[j] that to them you are like a sensual song, a beautiful voice and skilled musician.[k] They hear your words, but they do not obey them.[l] 33 When all this comes true—and it certainly will[m]—then they will know that a prophet was among them.”

  8. Ezekiel 33:31 tn Heb “goes after.”
  9. Ezekiel 33:31 tn The present translation understands the term often used for “unjust gain” in a wider sense, following M. Greenberg, who also notes that the LXX uses a term that can describe either sexual or ritual pollution. See M. Greenberg, Ezekiel (AB), 2:687.
  10. Ezekiel 33:32 tn The word הִנֵּה (hinneh, traditionally “behold”) indicates becoming aware of something and has been translated here as a verb.

  13. Ezekiel 33:33 tn Heb “behold, it is coming.”

30 “As for you, son of man, your people are talking about you near the city walls and in the doorways of their houses. One person speaks to another, each saying to his brother, ‘Come and hear what the message is that comes from the Lord!’ 31 So my people come to you in crowds,[a] sit in front of you, and hear your words, but they don’t obey them. Their mouths go on passionately, but their hearts pursue dishonest profit. 32 Yes, to them you are like a singer of passionate songs who has a beautiful voice and plays skillfully on an instrument. They hear your words, but they don’t obey them. 33 Yet when all this comes true(A)—and it definitely will—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”
