Ezekiel Is Watchman for Israel
33 The ·Lord spoke his word [L word of the Lord came] to me, saying: 2 “·Human [T Son of man; 2:1], speak to your people and say to them: ‘Suppose I bring a war against a land. The people of the land may choose one of their men and make him their watchman. 3 When he sees the ·enemy [L sword] coming ·to attack [against] the land, he will blow the trumpet and warn the people. 4 If they hear the sound of the trumpet but do ·nothing [not heed], the ·enemy [L sword] will come and ·kill them [L take them away]. ·They will be responsible for their own deaths [L Their blood will be on their own head]. 5 They heard the sound of the trumpet but didn’t ·do anything [heed the warning]. So ·they are to blame for their own deaths [L their blood will be on their own head]. If they had ·done something [taken the warning], they would have saved their own lives. 6 But if the watchman sees the ·enemy [L sword] coming to attack and does not blow the trumpet, the people will not be warned. Then if the ·enemy [L sword] comes and ·kills [L takes away] any of them, they have died because of their own sin. But I will ·punish [hold accountable] the watchman for their ·deaths [L blood].’
7 “You, ·human [T son of man; 2:1], are the one I have made a watchman for [L the house of] Israel. If you hear a word from my mouth, you must warn them for me. 8 Suppose I say to the wicked: ‘Wicked people, you will surely die,’ but you don’t speak to warn the wicked to ·stop doing evil [turn from their ways]. Then they will die ·because they were sinners [for their iniquity], but I will ·punish you [hold you accountable] for their deaths. 9 But if you warn the wicked to ·stop doing evil [turn from their ways] and they do not stop, they will die ·because they were sinners [for their iniquity]. But you have saved your life.
10 “So you, ·human [T son of man; 2:1], say to [L the house of] Israel: ‘You have said: Surely our ·lawbreaking [transgressions] and sins are ·hurting [L upon] us. ·They will kill us [We are wasting/rotting away because of them]. What can we do so we will live?’ 11 Say to them: ‘The Lord God says: As surely as I live, I ·do not want any who are wicked to die [L take no pleasure in the death of the wicked]. I want them to ·stop doing evil [turn from their ways] and live. ·Stop [Turn]! ·Stop [Turn from] your wicked ways! ·You don’t want to die, do you [L Why will you die], ·people [L house] of Israel?’
12 “·Human [T Son of man; 2:1], say to your people: ‘The ·goodness [righteousness] of ·those who do right [the righteous] will not save them ·when they sin [L in the day of their rebellion]. The ·evil of wicked people [wickedness of the wicked] will not cause them to ·be punished [stumble] if they stop doing it. If ·good people [the righteous] sin, they will not be able to live by the ·good [righteousness] they did earlier.’ 13 If I tell ·good people [the righteous], ‘You will surely live,’ they might ·think they have done enough good [L trust in their righteousness] and then do evil. Then none of the ·good [righteous] things they did will be remembered. They will die because of the ·evil [iniquity] they have done. 14 Or, if I say to the wicked people, ‘You will surely die,’ they may stop sinning and do what is right and ·honest [just]. 15 For example, ·they [L the wicked one] may ·return what somebody gave them as a promise to repay a loan [restore the pledge], or pay back what they stole. If they live by the ·rules [statutes] that give life and do not ·sin [do evil; practice iniquity], then they will surely live, and they will not die. 16 None of the sins they have committed will be ·held [L remembered] against them. They now do what is right and ·fair [just], so they will surely live.
17 “Your people say: ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ But it is their own ways that are not ·fair [just]. 18 When the ·good people [righteous] ·stop doing good [turn from righteousness] and do evil, they will die for their evil. 19 But when the wicked ·stop doing evil [turn from sin] and do what is right and ·fair [just], they will live. 20 You still say: ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ Israel, I will judge all of you ·by [according to] your own ways.”
The Fall of Jerusalem Explained
21 It was in the twelfth year [C since King Jehoiachin’s exile (1:2)], on the fifth day of the tenth month [C January 19, 585 bc]. A ·person who had escaped [survivor; refugee; fugitive] from Jerusalem came to me and said, “Jerusalem has been ·captured [struck down].” 22 Now ·I had felt the power of the Lord [L the hand of the Lord was] on me the evening before. He had ·made me able to talk again [L opened my mouth] before this person came to me. ·I could speak [L He opened my mouth]; I was not without speech anymore [C see 3:24–27].
23 Then the ·Lord spoke his word [L word of the Lord came] to me, saying: 24 “·Human [T Son of man; 2:1], people who live in the ruins in the land of Israel are saying: ‘Abraham was only one person, yet he was given the land as his own. Surely the land has been given to us, who are many, as our ·very own [possession].’ 25 So say to them: ‘This is what the Lord God says: You eat meat with the blood still in it [C forbidden in the law; Lev. 19:26], you ·ask your idols for help [L raise your eyes to your idols], and you ·murder people [L shed blood]. Should you then ·have the land as your very own [possess the land]? 26 You depend on your sword and do ·terrible things that I hate [detestable/abominable things]. Each of you ·has sexual relations with [defiles] his neighbor’s wife. So should you ·have [possess] the land?’
27 “Say to them: ‘This is what the Lord God says: As surely as I live, those who are among the city ruins in Israel will ·be killed in war [L fall by the sword]. I will cause those who live in the ·country [open field] to be eaten by wild animals. People ·hiding in [L in] the strongholds and caves will die of ·disease [plague; pestilence]. 28 I will make the land an ·empty desert [desolate wasteland]. ·The people’s pride in the land’s power [L …and her confident pride] will end. The mountains of Israel will become ·empty [desolate] so that no one will pass through them. 29 They will know that I am the Lord when I make the land an ·empty desert [desolate wasteland] because of the things they have done that ·I hate [are detestable/abominable].’
30 “But as for you, ·human [T son of man; 2:1], your people are talking about you by the walls and in the doorways of houses. They say to each other: ‘Come now, and hear the message from the Lord.’ 31 So they come to you in crowds as ·if they were really ready to listen [or they usually do; or people do]. They sit in front of you as if they were my people and hear your words, but they will not ·obey [do] them. With their mouths they ·tell me they love me [or talk lustfully], ·but [or and] their hearts ·desire [pursue] their selfish profits. 32 [L Look; T Behold] To your people you are nothing more than a singer who sings ·love [or sensual; lustful] songs and has a beautiful voice and plays a musical instrument well. They hear your words, but they will not ·obey [do] them.
33 “When this comes true, and it surely will happen, then the people will know that a prophet has been among them.”

Ezechiël moet waken over Israël
33 De Heer zei tegen mij: 2 "Mensenzoon, zeg tegen de mensen van je volk: Als er een oorlog dreigt, zetten de mensen een wachtpost neer. 3 Als hij het leger van de vijand ziet komen, blaast hij op de ramshoorn om de mensen te waarschuwen. 4 Stel dat iemand het alarmsignaal wel hoort, maar zich er niets van aantrekt. Als hij dan door de vijand gedood wordt, zal dat zijn eigen schuld zijn. 5 Want hij heeft het alarmsignaal wel gehoord, maar hij heeft zich er niets van aangetrokken. Het is zijn eigen schuld dat hij wordt gedood. Als hij wel naar de waarschuwing had geluisterd, zou hij in leven gebleven zijn. 6 Maar als de wachtpost het leger van de vijand wel ziet komen, maar hij blaast niet op de ramshoorn, dan worden de mensen niet gewaarschuwd. Als er daardoor mensen worden gedood, dan zijn ze wel vanwege hun eigen slechtheid gedood, maar het is de schuld van de wachtpost dat ze zijn gedood. De wachtpost is verantwoordelijk voor hun dood.
7 Mensenzoon, jij bent de wachtpost die Ik voor het volk Israël heb neergezet. Met wat Ik tegen jou zeg, moet jij de mensen waarschuwen. 8 Als Ik tegen slechte mensen zeg: 'Jullie zijn slecht. Daarom zal Ik jullie doden', dan moet jij hen waarschuwen dat ze in gevaar zijn. Als je dat niet doet, zullen zij wel vanwege hun eigen slechtheid sterven, maar het zal jouw schuld zijn dat ze zijn gedood. Jij zal daarvoor verantwoordelijk zijn. 9 Maar stel dat jij een slecht mens wel waarschuwt voor wat hij doet, maar hij weigert te veranderen. Dan zal het zijn eigen schuld zijn als hij vanwege zijn slechtheid wordt gedood. Jij bent dan niet schuldig aan zijn dood."
God beoordeelt ieder mens naar wat hij gedaan heeft
10 "Mensenzoon, zeg tegen het volk Israël: Jullie zeggen: 'Het is onze eigen schuld dat het zo slecht met ons gaat. Want we hebben slechte dingen gedaan en daar worden we nu zwaar voor gestraft. Maar hoe kunnen we zo in leven blijven?' 11 Maar Ik zweer bij Mijzelf dat Ik niet blij ben als slechte mensen sterven. Ik heb veel liever dat ze veranderen en dat ze daardoor blijven leven. Houd dus op met de slechte dingen die jullie doen en kom bij Mij terug. Want Ik wil niet dat jullie sterven, volk van Israël.
12 Mensenzoon, zeg tegen de mensen van je volk: Stel dat iemand eerst leeft zoals Ik het wil, maar later slechte dingen gaat doen. Dan zal hij niet worden gered door de goede dingen die hij eerst heeft gedaan. En stel dat iemand eerst slechte dingen doet, maar daarmee ophoudt en gaat leven zoals Ik het wil. Dan zal hij niet worden gedood voor de slechte dingen die hij eerst heeft gedaan.
13 Stel dat Ik zeg tegen iemand die leeft zoals Ik het wil, dat hij in leven zal blijven. En stel dat hij daarop gaat vertrouwen. Stel dat hij denkt slechte dingen te kunnen doen omdat Ik hem beloofd heb dat hij zal blijven leven. Dan zal hij toch sterven, omdat hij slechte dingen is gaan doen.
14 En stel dat Ik tegen een slecht mens zeg dat Ik hem zal doden. En stel dat hij verandert en gaat leven zoals Ik het wil, 15 (hij geeft terug wat hij heeft geleend of wat hij heeft gestolen, hij gaat leven volgens de wetten en leefregels die Ik heb gegeven en hij doet geen slechte dingen meer) dan zal hij in leven blijven. 16 Ik zal niet meer denken aan de slechte dingen die hij eerst heeft gedaan. Hij zal niet langer schuldig zijn. Want hij is gaan leven zoals Ik het wil. Daarom zal hij blijven leven.
17 De mensen van je volk zeggen: 'De Heer doet het verkeerd.' Maar zij doen zélf verkeerd! 18 Als iemand die eerst leefde zoals Ik het wil, verandert en slechte dingen gaat doen, dan zal hij daardoor sterven. 19 Maar als een slecht mens verandert en gaat leven zoals Ik het wil, dan zal hij daarom in leven blijven. 20 Jullie zeggen nog steeds: 'De Heer doet het verkeerd.' Maar omdat júllie verkeerd doen, zal Ik over jullie rechtspreken. Ik zal ieder van jullie oordelen naar wat hij doet, volk van Israël."
Jeruzalem is verwoest
21 In het twaalfde jaar dat we als gevangenen in Babylonië woonden, kwam er op de vijfde dag van de tiende maand een vluchteling uit Jeruzalem naar mij toe. Hij kwam met het bericht: 'Jeruzalem is veroverd en verwoest!' 22 De avond voordat deze man naar mij toe kwam, was de Geest van God over mij gekomen. Vanaf dat moment kon ik weer spreken, want tot dan toe kon ik dat niet. Dus toen deze man 's morgens kwam, kon ik weer spreken.[a]
Het land zal nog verder verwoest worden
23 En de Heer zei tegen mij: 24 "Mensenzoon, de bewoners van de verwoeste steden van Israël zeggen: 'Abraham was maar alleen, en toch bezat hij het hele land. Nu zijn wij een groot volk. Daarom hebben wij nu helemáál recht op dit hele land.' 25 Zeg tegen hen: Dit zegt de Heer: Jullie eten vlees waar het bloed nog in zit.[b] Jullie aanbidden walgelijke afgoden en doden onschuldige mensen. Zouden jullie het land dan mogen houden? 26 Jullie vertrouwen op je zwaard in plaats van op Mij. Jullie doen vreselijke dingen. Jullie gaan naar bed met de vrouw van iemand anders. Zouden jullie het land dan mogen houden? 27 Ik zweer bij Mijzelf: de mensen die in deze puinhopen blijven wonen, zullen door het zwaard worden gedood. En de mensen die op het open veld gaan wonen, zullen door de wilde dieren worden opgegeten. En de mensen die zich in grotten en holen verbergen, zullen aan de pest sterven. 28 Ik zal het land verwoesten. Al zijn pracht en macht waar het zo trots op was, zal Ik vernietigen. De bergen van Israël zullen een wildernis worden waar niemand meer komt. 29 Ik zal het hele land verwoesten, omdat jullie er vreselijke dingen hebben gedaan. Dan zullen jullie beseffen dat Ik de Heer ben."
De mensen willen niets doen met de waarschuwingen van Ezechiël
30 De Heer zei: "Mensenzoon, de mensen van je volk praten over jou op de muren en bij de deuren van hun huizen. De één zegt tegen de ander: 'Ga je mee om te horen wat de Heer nu weer tegen hem heeft gezegd?' 31 En ze komen in grote aantallen naar je toe. Ze gaan bij je zitten luisteren, maar zonder er iets mee te doen. Ze zeggen vriendelijke dingen, maar intussen zitten ze te bedenken hoe ze zo rijk mogelijk kunnen worden. 32 Ze vinden je woorden prachtig. Ze luisteren ernaar zoals je luistert naar iemand die een mooi liefdeslied zingt en mooie muziek maakt. Ze luisteren, maar ze doen er niets mee! 33 Maar wanneer gebeurt wat je hebt gezegd – en het staat vast dat het zal gebeuren! – zullen ze beseffen dat er een echte profeet bij hen heeft gewoond."

2 «Ezequiel, dales de mi parte este mensaje a los israelitas:
“Cuando yo permito que haya guerra en algún país, la gente de ese lugar elige a alguien y lo pone como vigilante. 3 Ese vigilante tiene la obligación de tocar la trompeta si ve que el ejército enemigo se acerca. 4-5 Si alguien escucha la trompeta, pero no le hace caso, y los enemigos lo matan, esa persona es culpable de su propia muerte. Si hubiera hecho caso de la advertencia, se habría salvado.
6 ”También puede suceder que el vigilante vea que se acerca el enemigo, y no toque la trompeta. En tal caso, si el enemigo llega y mata a alguien, esa persona morirá por causa de su pecado, pero yo le pediré cuentas de esa muerte al vigilante”.
7-9 »Yo te he elegido como mi vigilante oficial ante los israelitas. Si me oyes sentenciar a muerte a algún malvado, y tú no le adviertes que debe cambiar su mala conducta, ese malvado morirá por causa de su pecado, pero yo te pediré a ti cuentas de su muerte. Por el contrario, si le adviertes que debe cambiar su mala conducta, y no te hace caso, ese malvado morirá por causa de su pecado, pero tú salvarás tu vida.
10 »Los israelitas creen que ya no tienen remedio. Creen que se están pudriendo en vida porque han pecado mucho. Pero tú debes decirles 11 de mi parte que yo no quiero que muera la gente malvada. Lo que quiero es que dejen su mala conducta y vivan. Israelitas, ¡cambien su mala conducta! ¡Dejen de hacer lo malo, y no morirán!
12-19 »Pon atención, Ezequiel. Los israelitas me critican y dicen que soy injusto, pero en realidad los injustos son ellos. Por eso quiero que les aclares esto: Si una persona buena hace lo malo, todo lo bueno que haya hecho no la salvará de morir; pero si una persona malvada deja de hacer lo malo, todo lo malo que haya hecho le será perdonado, y vivirá por hacer lo que es recto y justo. Si roba algo, o recibe algo en prenda, pero lo devuelve, no volveré a acordarme de sus pecados, pues habrá obedecido mis mandamientos, que dan vida.
»Si a una persona buena le prometo que vivirá muchos años, y confiada en eso empieza a pecar, yo no tomaré en cuenta todo lo bueno que haya hecho, sino que morirá por los pecados que haya cometido.
20 »Sin embargo, los israelitas me critican y siguen diciendo que soy injusto. Pero yo voy a juzgar a cada quien de acuerdo con su conducta».
La destrucción de Jerusalén
21 Habían pasado doce años desde que llegamos presos a Babilonia. El día cinco del mes de Tébet[a] me enteré de que Jerusalén había sido destruida. Uno de los que habían logrado escapar con vida me dio la noticia. 22 La noche anterior, Dios me había hecho sentir su poder y me dejó mudo. Pero al día siguiente, cuando llegó el sobreviviente, Dios me permitió volver a hablar 23 y me dijo:
24 «Israel es un país en ruinas. Sin embargo, hay israelitas que se consuelan diciendo: “Si Abraham por sí solo pudo adueñarse de este país, ¡con mayor razón nosotros, que somos muchos, podremos permanecer en él!” 25-26 Por lo tanto, ve y diles de mi parte: “Ustedes hacen cosas repugnantes, comen alimentos prohibidos, adoran a dioses falsos, matan gente, confían en sus armas, y tienen relaciones sexuales con la mujer de su prójimo. ¿Y aún así esperan adueñarse de esta tierra?”
27 »Diles también de mi parte:
“Yo les juro que los israelitas que aún viven en estas ruinas morirán atravesados por la espada. Los animales salvajes se comerán a los que vivan en el campo, y la enfermedad acabará con los que se escondan en cuevas y fortalezas.
28-29 ”Ustedes han cometido pecados que yo no soporto. Pero yo les quitaré su poder y su orgullo. Dejaré este país hecho un desierto. Quedará totalmente abandonado, y nadie pasará por sus montañas. Entonces reconocerán que yo soy el Dios de Israel”.
30 »Ezequiel, los israelitas también hablan de ti. Hasta en las murallas de la ciudad, y en las puertas de sus casas, se les oye decir: “Vengan, vamos a oír el mensaje que Dios nos ha enviado por medio de Ezequiel”. 31-32 Y así lo hacen: llegan, se sientan delante de ti, y te prestan atención. Para ellos, tú eres como un cantante de dulce voz, que sabe tocar bien su instrumento musical, y que le canta al amor. Les gusta mucho cómo hablas, pero les gusta más el dinero. Te oyen, pero no hacen lo que les dices.
33 »Muy pronto se cumplirá todo lo que he dicho. Cuando se cumpla, van a darse cuenta de que hubo entre ellos alguien que les hablaba de mi parte».
