“人子啊,你要告诉你的同胞,‘我若使战争降临某地,那地方的百姓就应选一人做守望者。 守望者发现敌人来攻打,便吹号警告百姓。 凡听见号声而不接受警告的,敌人来把他杀了,这流血的罪就要由他自己承担。 因为他听见号声,却不接受警告,他的死是咎由自取。他若接受警告,就不至于死了。 但如果守望者看见敌人来攻打而不吹号警告百姓,以致有人被敌人杀了,那人固然是因自己的罪恶而被杀,我却要向这守望者追讨那人被杀的血债。’

“Son of man, speak to your people and say to them: ‘When I bring the sword(A) against a land, and the people of the land choose one of their men and make him their watchman,(B) and he sees the sword coming against the land and blows the trumpet(C) to warn the people, then if anyone hears the trumpet but does not heed the warning(D) and the sword comes and takes their life, their blood will be on their own head.(E) Since they heard the sound of the trumpet but did not heed the warning, their blood will be on their own head.(F) If they had heeded the warning, they would have saved themselves.(G) But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes someone’s life, that person’s life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.’(H)
