3 Then the Lord said to me, “·Human [T Son of man; 2:1], eat what ·you find [you see; is before you]; eat this scroll. Then go and speak to the ·people [L house] of Israel.” 2 So I opened my mouth, and he ·gave [fed] me the scroll to eat.
3 He said to me, “·Human [T Son of man; 2:1], eat this scroll which I am giving you, and fill your stomach with it.” Then I ate it, and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth [Jer. 15:16; Rev. 10:9, 10].
4 Then he said to me, “·Human [T Son of man; 2:1], go to the ·people [L house] of Israel, and speak my words to them. 5 [L For; Because] You are not being sent to people ·whose speech you can’t understand [of obscure/foreign language; L deep of lip], ·whose language is difficult [L and heavy tongue]. You are being sent to [L the house of] Israel. 6 You are not being sent to many nations ·whose speech you can’t understand [of obscure/foreign language; L deep of lip], ·whose language is difficult [L and heavy tongue], whose words you cannot understand. If I had sent you to them, they would have listened to you. 7 But the ·people [L house] of Israel will not be willing to listen to you, because they are not willing to listen to me. Yes, all the ·people [L house] of Israel are ·stubborn [hardheaded] and ·will not obey [hardhearted]. 8 ·See [T Behold], I now make ·you as stubborn [L your face as strong as their face] and ·as hard as they are [L your forehead as strong as their forehead]. 9 I am making ·you [L your forehead] as hard as ·a diamond [or flint; or the hardest stone], harder than ·stone [or flint]. Don’t be afraid of them or be ·frightened [terrified; dismayed] by them, though they are a ·people who turn against me [L rebellious house].”
10 Also, he said to me, “·Human [T Son of man; 2:1], ·believe [L take in your heart] all the words I will speak to you, and ·listen carefully to them [L hear with your ears]. 11 Then go to the ·captives [exiles], ·your own [L the sons of your] people, and say to them, ‘The Lord God says this.’ Tell them this whether they listen or not.”
12 Then ·the Spirit [or the spirit; or a wind] lifted me up, and I heard a loud rumbling ·sound [or voice] behind me, ·saying, “Praise the glory of the Lord [C his manifest presence] in heaven [or as the glory of the Lord rose from its place].” 13 ·I heard [or It was the sound of] the wings of the living creatures touching each other and the sound of the wheels by them. It was a loud rumbling sound. 14 So ·the Spirit [or the spirit; or a wind] lifted me up and took me away. I ·was unhappy and angry [L went in bitterness in the heat/wrath of my spirit], and I felt the great ·power [L hand] of the Lord. 15 I came to the ·captives [exiles] from Judah, who lived by the Kebar ·River [Canal; 1:1] at Tel Abib. I sat there seven days where these people lived, feeling ·shocked [stunned; overwhelmed; distressed].
Israel’s Warning
16 ·After [L At the end of] seven days the ·Lord spoke his word [L word of the Lord came] to me again. He said, 17 “·Human [T Son of man; 2:1], I ·now make [or have made] you a watchman for [L the house of] Israel. Any time you hear a word from my mouth, warn them for me. 18 ·When [or If] I say to the wicked, ‘You will surely die,’ but you don’t speak out to warn them to stop their evil ways, they will die ·in their sin [for their iniquity]. But I will hold you ·responsible [accountable] for their death. 19 But if you warn the wicked and they do not turn from their wickedness or their ·evil ways [wicked lifestyle], they will die because of their sin. But you will have saved your ·life [soul].
20 “Again, ·those who do right [the righteous] may turn away from ·doing good [righteousness] and ·do evil [commit iniquity/injustice]. If I ·make something bad happen to [L lay a stumbling block before] them, they will die. Because you have not warned them, they will die because of their sin, and the ·good [righteous things] they did will not be remembered. But I will hold you ·responsible [accountable] for their deaths. 21 But if you have warned ·those good people [the righteous] not to sin, and they do not sin, they will surely live, because they ·believed [took; received] the warning. And you will have saved your ·life [soul].”
22 Then I felt the ·power [L hand] of the Lord there. He said to me, “Get up and go out to the ·plain [or valley]. There I will speak to you.” 23 So I got up and went out to the ·plain [or valley]. ·I saw [T And behold] the glory of the Lord [C his manifest presence] standing there, like the glory I saw by the Kebar ·River [Canal; 1:1], and I ·bowed [fell] facedown on the ground.
24 Then the Spirit entered me and ·made me stand [set me] on my feet. He spoke to me and said, “Go, shut yourself up in your house. 25 As for you, ·human [T son of man; 2:1], the people will tie you up with ·ropes [cords] so that you will not be able to go out among them. 26 Also, I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth so you will be silent [C Ezekiel would be mute for seven and a half years (see dates in 1:1–3 and 33:21–22), except when the Lord opened his mouth with prophetic revelations; v. 27]. You will not be able to ·argue with [rebuke; reprove] the people, ·even though they turn against me [L for they are a rebellious house]. 27 But when I speak to you, I will open your mouth, and you will say to them, ‘The Lord God says this.’ Those who will listen, let them listen. Those who refuse, let them refuse, because they are a ·people who turn against me [rebellious house].

3 És mondá nékem: Embernek fia! hasadat tartsd jól és belsõ részeidet töltsd meg ezzel a türettel, a melyet adok néked. És megevém azt, és lõn az én számban, mint az édes méz.
4 És mondá nékem: Embernek fia! eredj, menj el az Izráel házához, és szólj az én szavaimmal nékik.
5 Mert nem valami homályos ajkú és nehéz nyelvû néphez küldetel te, hanem az Izráel házához.
6 Nem sok népekhez, a kik homályos ajkúak és nehéz nyelvûek, kiknek nem érthetnéd beszédöket; bizony, ha õ hozzájok küldöttelek volna, õk hallgatnának reád.
7 De az Izráel háza nem akar téged hallgatni, mert nem akarnak engem hallgatni, mert az egész Izráel háza kemény homlokú és megátalkodott szívû.
8 Ímé keménynyé tettem orczádat, a milyen az õ orczájok, és keménynyé homlokodat, a milyen az õ homlokuk.
9 Olyanná, mint a gyémánt, a mely keményebb a tûzkõnél, tettem a te homlokodat; ne félj tõlök, és meg ne rettenj tekintetöktõl, mert pártos ház.
10 És mondá nékem: Embernek fia! minden beszédimet, a melyeket szólok néked, vedd szívedbe, és füleiddel halld meg.
11 És eredj, menj el a foglyokhoz, a te néped fiaihoz, és szólj és mondjad nékik: Így szól az Úr Isten, vagy hallják vagy nem.
12 És fölemele engem a lélek, és hallék mögöttem nagy dörgés szavát: Áldott az Úrnak dicsõsége az õ helyérõl.
13 És amaz állatok szárnyainak zúgását, a melyek egymást érik vala, és mellettök a kerekek csikorgását, és nagy dörgés szavát.
14 És a lélek fölemele és elragada engem, és elmenék, elkeseredvén haragjában az én lelkem, az Úrnak keze pedig rajtam erõs vala.
15 És eljuték Tél-Ábibba a foglyokhoz, a kik lakoznak vala a Kébár folyó mellett, és leülék, õk [is] ott ülvén; és ott ülék hét nap némán õ közöttük.
16 És lõn hét nap mulva az Úr szava hozzám, mondván:
17 Embernek fia! õrállóul adtalak én téged Izráel házának, hogy ha szót hallasz számból, intsd meg õket az én nevemben.
18 Ha ezt mondom a hitetlennek: Halálnak halálával halsz meg, és te õt meg nem inted és nem szólasz, hogy visszatérítsd a hitetlent az õ gonosz útjáról, hogy éljen: az a gonosztevõ az õ vétke miatt hal meg, de vérét a te kezedbõl kívánom meg.
19 De ha te megintetted a hitetlent, és õ meg nem tért hitetlenségébõl és gonosz útjáról: õ az õ vétke miatt meghal, de te megmentetted a te lelkedet.
20 És ha elfordul az igaz az õ igazságától, és cselekszik álnokságot, és én vetek eléje botránkozást: õ meg fog halni; ha meg nem intetted õt, vétke miatt hal meg és elfelejtetnek igazságai, a melyeket cselekedett; de vérét a te kezedbõl kívánom meg.
21 Ha pedig te megintetted azt az igazat, hogy az igaz ne vétkezzék, és õ nem vétkezik többé: élvén él, mert engedett az intésnek, és te a te lelkedet megmentetted.
22 És lõn ott az Úrnak keze rajtam, és monda nékem: Kelj fel, menj ki a völgybe, és ott szólok veled.
23 Fölkelék azért és kimenék a völgybe és ímé ott áll vala az Úrnak dicsõsége, hasonlatos ahhoz a dicsõséghez, a melyet a Kébár folyó mellett láttam, és orczámra esém.
24 És jöve belém a lélek, és állata engem lábaimra, és szóla hozzám és monda nékem: Menj be és zárd be magadat a te házadban.
25 És te, oh embernek fia, ímé köteleket vetnek reád és azokkal megkötöznek téged, és ki nem mehetsz közikbe;
26 Nyelvedet pedig én ragasztom ínyedhez, és néma leszel, hogy ne légy közöttök feddõzõ férfiú, mert õk pártos ház.
27 Mikor pedig szólok veled, megnyitom a te szádat, és mondjad nékik: Így szól az Úr Isten; a ki hallja, hallja, a ki nem akarja, nem hallja, mert õk pártos ház.

De Heer geeft Ezechiël een opdracht (vervolg)
3 Hij zei tegen mij: "Mensenzoon, eet op wat je hier ziet. Eet deze boekrol op en ga dan naar het volk Israël. Spreek tot hen." 2 Ik deed mijn mond open en Hij stopte de boekrol in mijn mond. 3 En Hij zei tegen mij: "Mensenzoon, eet je vol van deze boekrol." Ik at de boekrol op, en hij smaakte zo zoet als honing.
4 Daarna zei Hij tegen mij: "Mensenzoon, ga nu naar de Israëlieten. Zeg tegen hen wat Ik tegen jou zeg. 5 Ik stuur je niet naar een volk met een moeilijke taal, een taal die je niet begrijpt.[a] Nee, Ik stuur je naar je eigen volk: het volk Israël. 6 Ik stuur je niet naar buitenlandse volken waarvan je de taal niet verstaat. Als Ik je daar naartoe gestuurd had, zouden zij naar je geluisterd hebben. 7 Maar het volk Israël zal niet naar je willen luisteren, want ze willen nooit naar Mij luisteren. Want het hele volk Israël is koppig en eigenwijs. 8 Maar Ik zal jou net zo koppig en eigenwijs maken als zij zijn. Daardoor zul je je niets van hen aantrekken. 9 Ik zal je harder maken dan steen, ja, zo hard als diamant. Je hoeft dus niet bang voor hen te zijn, ook al zijn ze koppig en ongehoorzaam. 10 Mensenzoon, luister goed naar alles wat Ik je zal zeggen en onthoud het goed. 11 Ga dan naar de mensen van je volk die hier in Babylonië moeten wonen. Zeg tegen hen wat Ik je zeg, ook als ze niet naar je willen luisteren."
12 Toen tilde de Geest mij op. Achter mij hoorde ik een dreunend geluid. – Prijs de Heer in zijn verblijfplaats![b] – 13 Het was het geluid van de vleugels van de wezens en het geluid van de wielen naast hen. Het was een donderend geluid. De vleugels van de wezens raakten elkaar. 14 En de Geest tilde me op en nam me mee. Zo ging ik weg, diep bedroefd. Mijn geest brandde in mij, doordat de Geest van de Heer zo sterk op mij was. 15 Ik kwam in Tel-Abib, bij de Israëlieten die daar bij de rivier de Kebar wonen. Ik bleef daar zeven dagen helemaal verbijsterd zitten.
Ezechiëls verantwoordelijkheid
16 Na die zeven dagen zei de Heer tegen mij: 17 "Mensenzoon, Ik wijs jou aan tot wachtpost voor het volk Israël. Jij moet hen namens Mij waarschuwen voor het gevaar waarin ze zich bevinden. Je moet hen waarschuwen met de woorden die Ik je geef. 18 Als Ik tegen een slecht mens zeg dat hij zal sterven, moet jij hem waarschuwen. Waarschuw hem dat hij zal sterven als hij niet stopt met de slechte dingen die hij doet. Als je dat niet doet, zal hij vanwege zijn eigen slechtheid sterven. Maar jij zal verantwoordelijk zijn voor zijn dood. 19 Maar als jij hem waarschuwt en hij wil niet veranderen, dan zal hij vanwege zijn slechtheid sterven. En jij hebt geen schuld op je geladen.
20 Stel dat iemand eerst leefde zoals Ik het wil, maar daarmee ophoudt en een slecht mens wordt. Dan zal Ik hem doden. Als jij hem niet waarschuwt, zal hij vanwege zijn eigen slechtheid sterven. Ik zal geen rekening houden met de goede dingen die hij eerst heeft gedaan. Maar jij bent verantwoordelijk voor zijn dood, omdat je hem niet gewaarschuwd hebt.
21 Maar als je iemand die leeft zoals Ik het wil, waarschuwt om geen slechte dingen te gaan doen, en hij doet dat inderdaad niet, dan zal hij blijven leven. En jij hebt geen schuld op je geladen."
De Heer zegt dat Ezechiël zijn volk nog niet zal kunnen waarschuwen
22 De Geest van de Heer was daar op mij. En Hij zei tegen mij: "Sta op en ga naar het dal. Daar zal Ik tegen je spreken." 23 Ik stond op en ging naar het dal. Daar zag ik plotseling de stralende aanwezigheid van de Heer, zoals ik Hem aan de rivier de Kebar had gezien. Ik viel op de grond neer.
24 Maar de Geest kwam in mij en zette mij weer op mijn voeten. Hij zei tegen mij: "Mensenzoon, sluit je op in je huis. 25 Je zal door Mij met touwen vastgebonden worden, zodat je niet meer naar hen toe kan gaan. 26 En Ik zal ervoor zorgen dat je tong lijkt vast te kleven in je mond, zodat je niet zal kunnen spreken. Je zal hen niet kunnen waarschuwen. Ze willen toch niet naar je luisteren. 27 Alleen als Ik tegen je spreek, zal Ik je tong losmaken. Dan moet je namens Mij tegen hen spreken en zeggen: 'Dit zegt de Heer.' Sommige mensen zullen willen luisteren, andere niet. Want het is een koppig en ongehoorzaam volk."

3 And he said to me, “Son of man, eat what is before you, eat this scroll; then go and speak to the people of Israel.” 2 So I opened my mouth, and he gave me the scroll to eat.
3 Then he said to me, “Son of man, eat this scroll I am giving you and fill your stomach with it.” So I ate(A) it, and it tasted as sweet as honey(B) in my mouth.
4 He then said to me: “Son of man, go now to the people of Israel and speak my words to them.(C) 5 You are not being sent to a people of obscure speech and strange language,(D) but to the people of Israel— 6 not to many peoples of obscure speech and strange language, whose words you cannot understand. Surely if I had sent you to them, they would have listened to you.(E) 7 But the people of Israel are not willing to listen(F) to you because they are not willing to listen to me, for all the Israelites are hardened and obstinate.(G) 8 But I will make you as unyielding and hardened as they are.(H) 9 I will make your forehead(I) like the hardest stone, harder than flint.(J) Do not be afraid of them or terrified by them, though they are a rebellious people.(K)”
10 And he said to me, “Son of man, listen carefully and take to heart(L) all the words I speak to you. 11 Go(M) now to your people in exile and speak to them. Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says,’(N) whether they listen or fail to listen.(O)”
12 Then the Spirit lifted me up,(P) and I heard behind me a loud rumbling sound as the glory of the Lord rose from the place where it was standing.[a] 13 It was the sound of the wings of the living creatures(Q) brushing against each other and the sound of the wheels beside them, a loud rumbling sound.(R) 14 The Spirit(S) then lifted me up(T) and took me away, and I went in bitterness and in the anger of my spirit, with the strong hand of the Lord(U) on me. 15 I came to the exiles who lived at Tel Aviv near the Kebar River.(V) And there, where they were living, I sat among them for seven days(W)—deeply distressed.
Ezekiel’s Task as Watchman
16 At the end of seven days the word of the Lord came to me:(X) 17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman(Y) for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.(Z) 18 When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,(AA)’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for[b] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.(AB) 19 But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn(AC) from their wickedness(AD) or from their evil ways, they will die(AE) for their sin; but you will have saved yourself.(AF)
20 “Again, when a righteous person turns(AG) from their righteousness and does evil, and I put a stumbling block(AH) before them, they will die. Since you did not warn them, they will die for their sin. The righteous things that person did will not be remembered, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.(AI) 21 But if you do warn the righteous person not to sin and they do not sin, they will surely live because they took warning, and you will have saved yourself.(AJ)”
22 The hand of the Lord(AK) was on me there, and he said to me, “Get up and go(AL) out to the plain,(AM) and there I will speak to you.” 23 So I got up and went out to the plain. And the glory of the Lord was standing there, like the glory I had seen by the Kebar River,(AN) and I fell facedown.(AO)
24 Then the Spirit came into me and raised me(AP) to my feet. He spoke to me and said: “Go, shut yourself inside your house.(AQ) 25 And you, son of man, they will tie with ropes; you will be bound so that you cannot go out among the people.(AR) 26 I will make your tongue stick to the roof(AS) of your mouth so that you will be silent and unable to rebuke them, for they are a rebellious people.(AT) 27 But when I speak to you, I will open your mouth and you shall say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says.’(AU) Whoever will listen let them listen, and whoever will refuse let them refuse; for they are a rebellious people.(AV)
