12 “Thus says the Lord God: Because (A)Edom acted revengefully against the house of Judah and has grievously offended (B)in taking vengeance on them,

For thus says the Lord God: Because (A)you have clapped your hands (B)and stamped your feet and (C)rejoiced with all the (D)malice within your soul against the land of Israel,

29 Rejoice not, (A)O Philistia, all of you,
    that (B)the rod that struck you is broken,
for from the serpent's root will come forth an adder,
    and its fruit will be a (C)flying fiery serpent.
30 And the firstborn of (D)the poor will graze,
    and (E)the needy lie down in safety;
but I will kill your root with famine,
    and your remnant it will slay.
31 (F)Wail, O (G)gate; cry out, O city;
    melt in fear, (H)O Philistia, all of you!
(I)For smoke comes out of the north,
    and there is no straggler in his ranks.

(A)Ashkelon shall see it, and be afraid;
    Gaza too, and shall writhe in anguish;
    Ekron also, because its hopes are confounded.
The king shall perish from Gaza;
    Ashkelon shall be uninhabited;
(B)a mixed people[a] shall dwell in Ashdod,
    and I will cut off the pride of Philistia.
I will take away (C)its blood from its mouth,
    and (D)its abominations from between its teeth;
(E)it too shall be a remnant for our God;
    it shall be like (F)a clan in Judah,
    and Ekron shall be like the Jebusites.
Then (G)I will encamp at my house as a guard,
    (H)so that none shall march to and fro;
(I)no oppressor shall again march over them,
    (J)for now I see with my own eyes.

18 (A)And the Philistines had made raids on (B)the cities in the Shephelah and the Negeb of Judah, and had taken Beth-shemesh, Aijalon, Gederoth, Soco (C)with its villages, Timnah with its villages, and Gimzo with its villages. And they settled there.

(A)For Gaza shall be deserted,
    and Ashkelon shall become a desolation;
Ashdod's people shall be driven out at noon,
    and Ekron shall be uprooted.

Woe to (B)you inhabitants of the seacoast,
    you nation of (C)the Cherethites!
(D)The word of the Lord is against you,
    (E)O Canaan, land of the Philistines;
    and I will destroy you (F)until no inhabitant is left.
(G)And you, O seacoast, (H)shall be pastures,
    with meadows[a] for shepherds
    and folds for flocks.
(I)The seacoast shall become the possession
    of (J)the remnant of the house of Judah,
    (K)on which they shall graze,
and in the houses of Ashkelon
    they shall lie down at evening.
For the Lord their God (L)will be mindful of them
    and (M)restore their fortunes.

  1. Zephaniah 2:6 Or caves

Thus says the Lord:

(A)“For three transgressions of (B)Gaza,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because (C)they carried into exile a whole people
    to deliver them up to Edom.
So I will send a fire upon the wall of (D)Gaza,
    and it shall devour her strongholds.
I will cut off the inhabitants from (E)Ashdod,
    and him who holds the scepter from Ashkelon;
I will turn my hand against Ekron,
    and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish,”
says the Lord God.

“What are you to me, (A)O Tyre and Sidon, and all (B)the regions of Philistia? Are you paying me back for something? If you are paying me back, (C)I will return your payment on your own head swiftly and speedily. For (D)you have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried my rich treasures into your temples.[a] You have sold (E)the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks in order to remove them far from their own border. Behold, I will stir them up from the place to which you have sold them, and (F)I will return your payment on your own head. I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the people of Judah, and they will sell them to the (G)Sabeans, to a nation far away, for the Lord has spoken.”

Proclaim this among the nations:
(H)Consecrate for war;[b]
    stir up the mighty men.
Let all the men of war draw near;
    let them come up.
10 (I)Beat your plowshares into swords,
    and (J)your pruning hooks into spears;
    let the weak say, “I am a warrior.”

11 (K)Hasten and come,
    all you surrounding nations,
    and gather yourselves there.
(L)Bring down your warriors, O Lord.
12 Let the nations stir themselves up
    and come up to (M)the Valley of Jehoshaphat;
(N)for there I will sit to judge
    all the surrounding nations.

13 (O)Put in the sickle,
    (P)for the harvest is ripe.
(Q)Go in, tread,
    (R)for the winepress is full.
The vats overflow,
    for their evil is great.

14 Multitudes, multitudes,
    in the valley of decision!
For (S)the day of the Lord is near
    in the valley of decision.
15 (T)The sun and the moon are darkened,
    and the stars withdraw their shining.

16 (U)The Lord roars from Zion,
    and (V)utters his voice from Jerusalem,
    (W)and the heavens and the earth quake.
But the Lord is (X)a refuge to his people,
    a stronghold to the people of Israel.

The Glorious Future of Judah

17 (Y)“So you shall know that I am the Lord your God,
    (Z)who dwells in Zion, (AA)my holy mountain.
And Jerusalem shall be holy,
    and (AB)strangers shall never again pass through it.

18 “And in that day
(AC)the mountains shall drip sweet wine,
    and the hills shall flow with milk,
and (AD)all the streambeds of Judah
    shall flow with water;
(AE)and a fountain shall come forth from the house of the Lord
    and water the Valley of (AF)Shittim.

19 (AG)“Egypt shall become a desolation
    and (AH)Edom a desolate wilderness,
(AI)for the violence done to the people of Judah,
    because they have shed innocent blood in their land.
20 (AJ)But Judah shall be inhabited forever,
    and Jerusalem to all generations.
21 (AK)I will avenge their blood,
    blood I have not avenged,[c]
    (AL)for the Lord dwells in Zion.”

Judgment on the Philistines

47 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet (A)concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh struck down (B)Gaza.

“Thus says the Lord:
(C)Behold, waters are rising (D)out of the north,
    (E)and shall become an overflowing torrent;
they shall overflow (F)the land and all that fills it,
    the city and those who dwell in it.
Men shall cry out,
    and every inhabitant of the land shall wail.
At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his stallions,
    (G)at the rushing of his chariots, at the rumbling of their wheels,
the fathers (H)look not back to their children,
    so feeble are their hands,
because of the day that is coming to destroy
    all (I)the Philistines,
to cut off from (J)Tyre and Sidon
    every helper that remains.
For the Lord is destroying the Philistines,
    (K)the remnant of the coastland of (L)Caphtor.
(M)Baldness has come upon Gaza;
    (N)Ashkelon has perished.
O remnant of their valley,
    (O)how long will you gash yourselves?
(P)Ah, sword of the Lord!
    How long till you are quiet?
Put yourself into your scabbard;
    rest and be still!
How can it[a] be quiet
    (Q)when the Lord has given it a charge?
Against (R)Ashkelon and against the seashore
    (S)he has appointed it.”

    and his hand is stretched out still.
