Tell a parable to the rebellious house. Tell them that this is what the Lord God says.

Put the pot on. Put it on. Then pour water in it. Put the pieces of meat into it, every good piece, thigh and shoulder. Fill it with the best cuts.[a] Take the best of the flock. Pile up the wood[b] under it. Boil it thoroughly, so that the pieces[c] in it are well cooked.

Therefore, this is what the Lord God says. Woe to the bloody city, a pot whose residue[d] is inside it, whose residue has not gone out of it!

Take out its cuts of meat piece by piece, without choosing one piece in preference to another.[e] Do this because the blood she shed remains within her. She spilled it on a bare rock. She did not pour it on the ground, where the soil would cover it. To rouse wrath and to exact repayment, I have spilled her blood on a bare rock so that it would not be covered.

Therefore, this is what the Lord God says. Woe to the bloody city! I myself will keep piling up the wood. 10 Add more wood. Stoke the fire. Overcook the meat. Pour out the broth.[f] Let the bones be charred. 11 Leave the empty pot on the coals so that it becomes hot and its bronze glows, till the filth inside it is melted, and its residue is burned away. 12 The city has wearied me with its wickedness. Its filthy residue has not been removed from it. Into the fire with its filthy residue!

13 Your impurity is lewdness. I tried to cleanse you, but you did not become clean, and as a result you will not be clean again from your impurity until I have exhausted my wrath against you. 14 I, the Lord, have spoken. This is coming, and I will do it. I will not neglect it. I will not spare you, and I will not relent. According to your behavior and your misdeeds, you will be judged, declares the Lord God.

Footnotes

  1. Ezekiel 24:4 Literally the best bones
  2. Ezekiel 24:5 The Hebrew reads bones. Removing one letter from this word leaves the reading wood, which is followed by nearly all English translations. See verse 10.
  3. Ezekiel 24:5 The Hebrew reads bones.
  4. Ezekiel 24:6 The meaning of this word is uncertain. It refers to some sort of uncleanness, perhaps the carbonized waste that remains in an overheated pot.
  5. Ezekiel 24:6 The Hebrew reads no lot has fallen on it for the words without choosing one piece in preference to another.
  6. Ezekiel 24:10 The translation follows the Greek text. The Hebrew seems to read mix in the spices. It is not clear how this reading would fit a context about the final stages of destroying the meat.

And deliver a proverb[a] to the rebellious house,[b] and you must say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Place the pot! Place it and also pour water into it. Gather its pieces to it, every good piece, thigh and shoulder, fill it with choice bones; take the choicest of the flock, and also pile the bones[c] under it; boil it vigorously;[d] indeed,[e] its bones boiled in the midst of it.”’”

Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Woe to the city of bloodguilt! A pot that has its rust in it; its rust did not go out from it.[f] Bring it out piece by piece;[g] one is as good as another.[h] For her blood was in the midst of her; she put it on a bare rock;[i] she did not pour it on the ground to cover it with dust.[j] To stir up rage, to avenge myself through vengeance, I placed its blood on the barrenness of a rock, so that it may not be covered.”[k]

Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Woe to the city of bloodguilt! I, even I, will make the pile of wood great! 10 Pile up the logs; kindle the fire; finish cooking the meat, and mix in the spices, and let the bones be burned.[l] 11 And make it stand[m] empty upon its burning coals so that it may become hot, and its copper may become molten and be melted in the midst of it,[n] so that its uncleanness and its rust be consumed. 12 Through effort she has caused weariness; its thick rust[o] went not out of it. Its rust! Into the fire with its rust! 13 In your uncleanness is obscene conduct, because I cleansed you, but you were not clean from your uncleanness; you will not be clean again until I fully vent my rage[p] on you. 14 I, Yahweh, I have spoken. It is coming, and I did it; I will not disregard, and I will not take pity, and I will not reconsider. According to your ways and according to your deeds they will judge you!”[q] declares[r] the Lord Yahweh.
