Ezekiel 20

Israel’s Rebellion
20 In the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth day of the month, some of Israel’s elders came to inquire of the Lord,(A) and they sat down in front of me. 2 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 3 “Son of man, speak with the elders of Israel and tell them, ‘This is what the Lord God says: Are you coming to inquire of me? As I live, I will not let you inquire of me.(B) This is the declaration of the Lord God.’
4 “Will you pass judgment against them, will you pass judgment, son of man? Explain the detestable practices of their ancestors to them.(C) 5 Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord God says: On the day I chose Israel, I swore an oath[a](D) to the descendants of Jacob’s house and made myself known to them in the land of Egypt. I swore to them, saying, “I am the Lord your God.”(E) 6 On that day I swore[b] to them that I would bring them out(F) of the land of Egypt into a land I had searched out for them, a land flowing with milk and honey,(G) the most beautiful of all lands.(H) 7 I also said to them, “Throw away, each of you, the abhorrent things that you prize,[c] and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt.(I) I am the Lord your God.”(J)
8 “‘But they rebelled against me and were unwilling to listen to me. None of them threw away the abhorrent things that they prized,[d] and they did not abandon the idols of Egypt. So I considered pouring out my wrath on them,(K) exhausting my anger against them within the land of Egypt. 9 But I acted for the sake of my name,(L) so that it would not be profaned in the eyes of the nations they were living among, in whose sight I had made myself known to Israel by bringing them out of Egypt.
10 “‘So I brought them out of the land of Egypt and led them into the wilderness.(M) 11 Then I gave them my statutes and explained my ordinances to them—the person who does them will live by them.(N) 12 I also gave them my Sabbaths to serve as a sign between me and them,(O) so that they would know that I am the Lord who consecrates them.
13 “‘But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness.(P) They did not follow my statutes and they rejected my ordinances—the person who does them will live by them.(Q) They also completely profaned my Sabbaths.(R) So I considered pouring out my wrath on them in the wilderness to put an end to them.(S) 14 But I acted for the sake of my name, so that it would not be profaned in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out. 15 However, I swore to them(T) in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land I had given them—the most beautiful of all lands, flowing with milk and honey— 16 because they rejected my ordinances, profaned my Sabbaths, and did not follow my statutes. For their hearts went after their idols.(U) 17 Yet I spared them from destruction and did not bring them to an end in the wilderness.(V)
18 “‘Then I said to their children in the wilderness, “Don’t follow the statutes of your fathers, defile yourselves with their idols, or keep their ordinances.(W) 19 I am the Lord your God. Follow my statutes, keep my ordinances, and practice them.(X) 20 Keep my Sabbaths holy,(Y) and they will be a sign between me and you, so you may know that I am the Lord your God.”
21 “‘But the children rebelled against me.(Z) They did not follow my statutes or carefully keep my ordinances—the person who does them will live by them. They also profaned my Sabbaths. So I considered pouring out my wrath on them and exhausting my anger against them in the wilderness. 22 But I withheld my hand and acted for the sake of my name, so that it would not be profaned in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I brought them out. 23 However, I swore to them in the wilderness that I would disperse them among the nations and scatter them among the countries.(AA) 24 For they did not practice my ordinances but rejected my statutes and profaned my Sabbaths, and their eyes were fixed(AB) on their fathers’ idols. 25 I also gave them statutes that were not good and ordinances(AC) they could not live by. 26 When they sacrificed every firstborn in the fire,[e](AD) I defiled them through their gifts in order to devastate them so they would know that I am the Lord.’(AE)
27 “Therefore, son of man, speak to the house of Israel, and tell them, ‘This is what the Lord God says: In this way also your ancestors blasphemed me by(AF) committing treachery against me: 28 When I brought them into the land that I swore to give them and they saw any high hill or leafy tree,(AG) they offered their sacrifices and presented their offensive offerings there. They also sent up their pleasing aromas and poured out their drink offerings there. 29 So I asked them, “What is this high place you are going to?” And it is still called Bamah[f] today.’
30 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord God says: Are you defiling yourselves the way your ancestors did,(AH) and prostituting yourselves with their abhorrent things? 31 When you offer your gifts, sacrificing your children in the fire,[g](AI) you still continue to defile yourselves with all your idols today. So should I let you inquire of me, house of Israel? As I live—this is the declaration of the Lord God—I will not let you inquire of me!
Israel’s Restoration
32 “‘When you say, “Let’s be like the nations, like the clans of other countries, serving wood and stone,”(AJ) what you have in mind will never happen.(AK) 33 As I live—the declaration of the Lord God—I will reign over you with a strong hand, an outstretched arm,(AL) and outpoured wrath. 34 I will bring you from the peoples and gather you from the countries where you were scattered,(AM) with a strong hand, an outstretched arm,(AN) and outpoured wrath. 35 I will lead you into the wilderness of the peoples(AO) and enter into judgment with you there face to face. 36 Just as I entered into judgment with your ancestors in the wilderness of the land of Egypt,(AP) so I will enter into judgment with you. This is the declaration of the Lord God. 37 I will make you pass under the rod(AQ) and will bring you into the bond of the covenant. 38 I will purge you of those who rebel and transgress against me.(AR) I will bring them out of the land where they live as foreign residents, but they will not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Lord.
39 “‘As for you, house of Israel, this is what the Lord God says: Go and serve your idols, each of you. But afterward you will surely listen to me, and you will no longer defile my holy name with your gifts and idols.(AS) 40 For on my holy mountain, Israel’s high mountain—the declaration of the Lord God—there the entire house of Israel, all of them,(AT) will serve me in the land. There I will accept them and will require your contributions and choicest gifts,(AU) all your holy offerings. 41 When I bring you from the peoples and gather you from the countries where you have been scattered, I will accept you as a pleasing aroma. And I will demonstrate my holiness through you in the sight of the nations.(AV) 42 When I lead you into the land of Israel, the land I swore to give your ancestors, you will know that I am the Lord.(AW) 43 There you will remember your ways and all your deeds by which you have defiled yourself,(AX) and you will loathe yourselves for all the evil things you have done.(AY) 44 You will know that I am the Lord,(AZ) house of Israel, when I have dealt with you for the sake of my name(BA) rather than according to your evil ways and corrupt acts. This is the declaration of the Lord God.’”
Fire in the South
45 The word of the Lord came to me: 46 “Son of man, face the south and preach against it. Prophesy against the forest land in the Negev,(BB) 47 and say to the forest there, ‘Hear the word of the Lord! This is what the Lord God says: I am about to ignite a fire in you, and it will devour every green tree and every dry tree in you. The blazing flame will not be extinguished, and every face from the south to the north will be scorched by it. 48 Then all humanity will see that I, the Lord, have kindled it.(BC) It will not be extinguished.’”
49 Then I said, “Oh, Lord God, they are saying of me, ‘Isn’t he just composing parables?’” (BD)
James 4-5

Proud or Humble
4 What is the source of wars and fights among you? Don’t they come from your passions(A) that wage war within you?[a] 2 You desire and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and wage war.[b] You do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and don’t receive because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.(B)
4 You adulterous people![c] Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? So whoever wants to be the friend of the world becomes the enemy of God.(C) 5 Or do you think it’s without reason that the Scripture says: The spirit he made to dwell in us envies intensely?[d](D)
6 But he gives greater grace. Therefore he says:
7 Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.(F) 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.(G) 9 Be miserable and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.(H) 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
11 Don’t criticize one another, brothers and sisters. Anyone who defames or judges a fellow believer[f] defames and judges the law. If you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.(I) 12 There is one lawgiver and judge[g] who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?(J)
Our Will and God’s Will
13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will travel to such and such a city and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.”(K) 14 Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring—what your life will be! For you are like vapor that appears for a little while, then vanishes.(L)
15 Instead, you should say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 But as it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.(M) 17 So it is sin to know the good and yet not do it.(N)
Warning to the Rich
5 Come now, you rich(O) people, weep and wail over the miseries that are coming on you. 2 Your wealth has rotted and your clothes are moth-eaten.(P) 3 Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have stored up treasure in the last days.(Q) 4 Look! The pay that you withheld from the workers(R) who mowed your fields cries out, and the outcry of the harvesters has reached the ears of the Lord of Armies.(S) 5 You have lived luxuriously on the earth and have indulged yourselves. You have fattened your hearts(T) in a day of slaughter.(U) 6 You have condemned, you have murdered the righteous, who does not resist you.(V)
Waiting for the Lord
7 Therefore, brothers and sisters, be patient until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth and is patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains.(W) 8 You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, because the Lord’s coming is near.(X)
9 Brothers and sisters, do not complain about one another, so that you will not be judged. Look, the judge stands at the door!(Y)
10 Brothers and sisters, take the prophets who spoke in the Lord’s name as an example of suffering and patience. 11 See, we count as blessed those who have endured.[h] You have heard of Job’s endurance(Z) and have seen the outcome that the Lord brought about—the Lord is compassionate and merciful.(AA)
Truthful Speech
12 Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath.(AB) But let your “yes” mean “yes,” and your “no” mean “no,” so that you won’t fall under judgment.[i]
Effective Prayer
13 Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone cheerful? He should sing praises.(AC) 14 Is anyone among you sick? He should call for the elders of the church, and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.(AD) 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up; if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.(AE) 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect.(AF) 17 Elijah was a human being as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the land.(AG) 18 Then he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the land produced its fruit.(AH)
19 My brothers and sisters, if any among you strays from the truth,(AI) and someone turns him back,(AJ) 20 let that person know that whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.(AK)
