The Vision of the Scroll
2 He said to me: O mortal,[a] stand up on your feet, and I will speak with you. 2 And when he spoke to me, a spirit entered into me and set me on my feet; and I heard him speaking to me. 3 He said to me, Mortal, I am sending you to the people of Israel, to a nation[b] of rebels who have rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have transgressed against me to this very day. 4 The descendants are impudent and stubborn. I am sending you to them, and you shall say to them, “Thus says the Lord God.” 5 Whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious house), they shall know that there has been a prophet among them. 6 And you, O mortal, do not be afraid of them, and do not be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns surround you and you live among scorpions; do not be afraid of their words, and do not be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house. 7 You shall speak my words to them, whether they hear or refuse to hear; for they are a rebellious house.
8 But you, mortal, hear what I say to you; do not be rebellious like that rebellious house; open your mouth and eat what I give you. 9 I looked, and a hand was stretched out to me, and a written scroll was in it. 10 He spread it before me; it had writing on the front and on the back, and written on it were words of lamentation and mourning and woe.
3 He said to me, O mortal, eat what is offered to you; eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel. 2 So I opened my mouth, and he gave me the scroll to eat. 3 He said to me, Mortal, eat this scroll that I give you and fill your stomach with it. Then I ate it; and in my mouth it was as sweet as honey.
4 He said to me: Mortal, go to the house of Israel and speak my very words to them. 5 For you are not sent to a people of obscure speech and difficult language, but to the house of Israel— 6 not to many peoples of obscure speech and difficult language, whose words you cannot understand. Surely, if I sent you to them, they would listen to you. 7 But the house of Israel will not listen to you, for they are not willing to listen to me; because all the house of Israel have a hard forehead and a stubborn heart. 8 See, I have made your face hard against their faces, and your forehead hard against their foreheads. 9 Like the hardest stone, harder than flint, I have made your forehead; do not fear them or be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house. 10 He said to me: Mortal, all my words that I shall speak to you receive in your heart and hear with your ears; 11 then go to the exiles, to your people, and speak to them. Say to them, “Thus says the Lord God”; whether they hear or refuse to hear.

12 Then the spirit lifted me up, and as the glory of the Lord rose[c] from its place, I heard behind me the sound of loud rumbling; 13 it was the sound of the wings of the living creatures brushing against one another, and the sound of the wheels beside them, that sounded like a loud rumbling. 14 The spirit lifted me up and bore me away; I went in bitterness in the heat of my spirit, the hand of the Lord being strong upon me. 15 I came to the exiles at Tel-abib, who lived by the river Chebar.[d] And I sat there among them, stunned, for seven days.
16 At the end of seven days, the word of the Lord came to me: 17 Mortal, I have made you a sentinel for the house of Israel; whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. 18 If I say to the wicked, “You shall surely die,” and you give them no warning, or speak to warn the wicked from their wicked way, in order to save their life, those wicked persons shall die for their iniquity; but their blood I will require at your hand. 19 But if you warn the wicked, and they do not turn from their wickedness, or from their wicked way, they shall die for their iniquity; but you will have saved your life. 20 Again, if the righteous turn from their righteousness and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumbling block before them, they shall die; because you have not warned them, they shall die for their sin, and their righteous deeds that they have done shall not be remembered; but their blood I will require at your hand. 21 If, however, you warn the righteous not to sin, and they do not sin, they shall surely live, because they took warning; and you will have saved your life.

22 Then the hand of the Lord was upon me there; and he said to me, Rise up, go out into the valley, and there I will speak with you. 23 So I rose up and went out into the valley; and the glory of the Lord stood there, like the glory that I had seen by the river Chebar; and I fell on my face. 24 The spirit entered into me, and set me on my feet; and he spoke with me and said to me: Go, shut yourself inside your house. 25 As for you, mortal, cords shall be placed on you, and you shall be bound with them, so that you cannot go out among the people; 26 and I will make your tongue cling to the roof of your mouth, so that you shall be speechless and unable to reprove them; for they are a rebellious house. 27 But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth, and you shall say to them, “Thus says the Lord God”; let those who will hear, hear; and let those who refuse to hear, refuse; for they are a rebellious house.

3 Egli mi disse: «Figlio d’uomo, io ti mando ai figli d’Israele, a nazioni ribelli, che si sono ribellate a me; essi e i loro padri si sono rivoltati contro di me fino a questo giorno. 4 A questi figli dalla faccia dura e dal cuore ostinato io ti mando. Tu dirai loro: “Così parla il Signore, Dio”. 5 Sia che ti ascoltino sia che non ti ascoltino, poiché sono una casa ribelle, essi sapranno che c’è un profeta in mezzo a loro. 6 Tu, figlio d’uomo, non aver paura di loro, né delle loro parole, poiché tu stai in mezzo a ortiche e spine, abiti fra gli scorpioni; non aver paura delle loro parole, non ti sgomentare davanti a loro, poiché sono una famiglia di ribelli. 7 Ma tu riferirai loro le mie parole, sia che ti ascoltino sia che non ti ascoltino, poiché sono ribelli. 8 Tu, figlio d’uomo, ascolta ciò che ti dico; non essere ribelle come questa famiglia di ribelli; apri la bocca e mangia ciò che ti do».
9 Io guardai, ed ecco una mano stava stesa verso di me, la quale teneva il rotolo di un libro; 10 lo srotolò davanti a me; era scritto di dentro e di fuori e conteneva lamentazioni, gemiti e guai.
3 Egli mi disse: «Figlio d’uomo, mangia ciò che trovi; mangia questo rotolo, poi va’ e parla alla casa d’Israele».
2 Io aprii la bocca ed egli mi fece mangiare quel rotolo.
3 Mi disse: «Figlio d’uomo, nùtriti il ventre e riempiti le viscere di questo rotolo che ti do». Io lo mangiai, e in bocca mi fu dolce come del miele.
4 (B)Egli mi disse: «Figlio d’uomo, va’, recati alla casa d’Israele e riferisci loro le mie parole; 5 poiché tu sei mandato non a un popolo dal parlare oscuro e dalla lingua incomprensibile, ma alla casa d’Israele, 6 non a molti popoli dal parlare oscuro e dalla lingua incomprensibile, di cui tu non capisca le parole. Certo, se io ti mandassi a loro, essi ti darebbero ascolto; 7 ma la casa d’Israele non ti vorrà ascoltare, perché non vogliono ascoltare me; infatti tutta la casa d’Israele ha la fronte dura e il cuore ostinato. 8 Ecco io rendo dura la tua faccia, perché tu possa opporla alla faccia loro, e rendo dura la tua fronte, perché tu possa opporla alla fronte loro; 9 io rendo la tua fronte come un diamante, più dura della selce. Non li temere, non ti sgomentare davanti a loro, perché sono una casa ribelle». 10 Poi mi disse: «Figlio d’uomo, ricevi nel tuo cuore tutte le parole che io ti dirò e ascoltale con le tue orecchie. 11 Va’ dai figli del tuo popolo che sono in esilio, parla loro e di’ loro: “Così parla il Signore, Dio”, sia che ti ascoltino sia che non ti ascoltino».
12 Lo Spirito mi portò in alto[a], e io udii dietro a me il suono d’un gran fragore che diceva: «Benedetta sia la gloria del Signore dal suo luogo!» 13 Udii pure il rumore delle ali degli esseri viventi che battevano l’una contro l’altra, il rumore delle ruote accanto a essi e il suono di un gran fragore. 14 Lo Spirito mi portò in alto e mi condusse via; io andai, pieno di amarezza nello sdegno del mio spirito; la mano del Signore era forte su di me. 15 Giunsi da quelli che erano deportati a Tel-Abib, presso il fiume Chebar, e mi fermai dove essi abitavano; e là abitai sette giorni, triste e silenzioso, in mezzo a loro.
16 (C)Dopo sette giorni, la parola del Signore mi fu rivolta in questi termini: 17 «Figlio d’uomo, io ti ho stabilito come sentinella per la casa d’Israele; quando tu udrai dalla mia bocca una parola, tu li avvertirai da parte mia. 18 Quando io dirò all’empio: “Certo morirai!”, se tu non l’avverti e non parli per avvertire quell’empio di abbandonare la sua via malvagia, e salvargli così la vita, quell’empio morirà per la sua iniquità; ma io domanderò conto del suo sangue alla tua mano. 19 Ma se tu avverti l’empio ed egli non si ritira dalla sua empietà e dalla sua via malvagia, egli morirà per la sua iniquità, ma tu avrai salvato te stesso. 20 Quando un giusto si allontana dalla sua giustizia e commette l’iniquità, se io gli pongo davanti una qualche occasione di caduta, egli morirà, perché tu non l’avrai avvertito; morirà per il suo peccato, e le cose giuste che avrà fatte non saranno più ricordate; ma io domanderò conto del suo sangue alla tua mano. 21 Però, se tu avverti quel giusto perché non pecchi, e non pecca, egli certamente vivrà, perché è stato avvertito, e tu avrai salvato te stesso».
22 (D)In quel luogo la mano del Signore fu sopra di me, ed egli mi disse: «Àlzati, va’ nella pianura, e là io parlerò con te». 23 Io dunque mi alzai, uscii nella pianura, ed ecco che là c’era la gloria del Signore, gloria simile a quella che avevo vista presso il fiume Chebar, e caddi faccia a terra. 24 Ma lo Spirito entrò in me, mi fece alzare in piedi, e il Signore mi parlò e mi disse: «Va’, chiuditi in casa tua! 25 A te, figlio d’uomo, ecco, ti saranno messe addosso delle corde, con esse sarai legato e tu non andrai in mezzo a loro. 26 Io farò in modo che la lingua ti si attacchi al palato, perché tu rimanga muto e tu non possa essere per essi uno che li riprende; perché sono una casa ribelle. 27 Ma quando io ti parlerò, ti aprirò la bocca e tu dirai loro: “Così parla il Signore, Dio”. Chi ascolta, ascolti, chi non vuole ascoltare, non ascolti; poiché sono una casa ribelle.

3 Und er sprach zu mir: Menschensohn, ich sende dich zu den Kindern Israels, zu den abtrünnigen Heiden[stämmen],[b] die sich gegen mich empört haben; sie und ihre Väter sind von mir abgefallen bis zu diesem heutigen Tag.
4 Und diese Kinder haben ein trotziges Angesicht und ein verstocktes Herz; zu ihnen sende ich dich, und ihnen sollst du sagen: »So spricht Gott, der Herr[c]!«
5 Sie aber, ob sie nun darauf hören oder es bleiben lassen — denn sie sind ein widerspenstiges Haus[d] —, sie sollen doch wissen, dass ein Prophet in ihrer Mitte gewesen ist.
6 Du aber, Menschensohn, fürchte dich nicht vor ihnen, und fürchte dich auch nicht vor ihren Worten, wenn sie auch wie Disteln und Dornen gegen dich sind und du unter Skorpionen wohnst. Fürchte dich nicht vor ihren Worten und erschrick nicht vor ihrem Angesicht; denn sie sind ein widerspenstiges Haus.
7 Und du sollst meine Worte zu ihnen reden, ob sie nun darauf hören oder es bleiben lassen; denn sie sind widerspenstig!
8 Du aber, Menschensohn, höre auf das, was ich zu dir rede; sei nicht widerspenstig wie das widerspenstige Haus! Tu deinen Mund auf und iss, was ich dir gebe!
9 Da schaute ich, und siehe, eine Hand war zu mir ausgestreckt, und siehe, sie hielt eine Buchrolle.
10 Und er breitete sie vor mir aus; sie war aber auf der Vorderseite und auf der Rückseite beschrieben, und es waren Klagen, Seufzer und Weherufe darauf geschrieben.
Hesekiel wird zum Boten Gottes und zum Wächter über Israel bestimmt
3 Und er sprach zu mir: Menschensohn, iss, was du hier vorfindest; iss diese Rolle und geh hin, rede zum Haus Israel!
2 Da tat ich meinen Mund auf, und er gab mir jene Rolle zu essen.
3 Und er sprach zu mir: Menschensohn, speise deinen Bauch und fülle deinen Leib mit dieser Rolle, die ich dir gebe! Da aß ich, und es war in meinem Mund so süß wie Honig.
4 Da sprach er zu mir: Menschensohn, geh hin zum Haus Israel und rede zu ihnen mit meinen Worten!
5 Denn du wirst nicht zu einem Volk mit unverständlicher Sprache und schwerer Zunge gesandt, sondern zum Haus Israel;
6 nicht zu vielen Nationen, die eine unverständliche Sprache und schwere Zunge haben, deren Worte du nicht verstehen könntest — wahrlich, wenn ich dich zu solchen Leuten senden würde, so würden sie auf dich hören!
7 Aber das Haus Israel wird nicht auf dich hören wollen, sie wollen ja auch auf mich nicht hören; denn das ganze Haus Israel hat eine harte Stirn und ein verstocktes Herz.
8 Doch siehe, ich habe dein Angesicht so hart gemacht wie ihr Angesicht und deine Stirn so hart wie ihre Stirn.
9 Wie Diamant und härter als Fels mache ich deine Stirn. Fürchte sie nicht und erschrick nicht vor ihrem Angesicht! Denn sie sind ein widerspenstiges Haus.
10 Und er sprach zu mir: Menschensohn, alle meine Worte, die ich zu dir rede, sollst du in dein Herz aufnehmen und mit deinen Ohren hören!
11 Und du sollst hingehen zu den Weggeführten, zu den Kindern deines Volkes, und sollst zu ihnen reden und zu ihnen sagen: So spricht Gott, der Herr! – ob sie nun darauf hören oder es bleiben lassen.
12 Da hob mich der Geist empor, und ich hörte hinter mir eine Stimme, ein gewaltiges Getöse: Gepriesen sei die Herrlichkeit des Herrn von seiner Wohnstätte her!
13 [Ich hörte auch] das Rauschen der Flügel der lebendigen Wesen, die einander berührten, und das Geräusch der Räder neben ihnen, und den Schall eines gewaltigen Getöses.
14 Da hob mich der Geist empor und nahm mich hinweg; und ich fuhr dahin, erbittert in der Glut meines Geistes[e], und die Hand des Herrn lag fest auf mir.
15 Und ich kam zu den Weggeführten nach Tel-Abib, zu denen, die am Fluss Kebar wohnen; und da sie dort saßen, setzte ich mich auch dorthin und war sieben Tage lang in Entsetzen[f] versunken unter ihnen.
16 Und es geschah nach sieben Tagen, da erging das Wort des Herrn an mich folgendermaßen:
17 Menschensohn, ich habe dich zum Wächter gesetzt für das Haus Israel; wenn du aus meinem Mund ein Wort gehört hast, so sollst du sie in meinem Auftrag warnen!
18 Wenn ich zu dem Gottlosen[g] sage: »Du musst gewisslich sterben!«, und du warnst ihn nicht und sagst es ihm nicht, um den Gottlosen vor seinem gottlosen Weg zu warnen und ihn am Leben zu erhalten, so wird der Gottlose um seiner Missetat willen sterben; aber sein Blut werde ich von deiner Hand fordern!
19 Warnst du aber den Gottlosen und er kehrt doch nicht um von seiner Gottlosigkeit und von seinem gottlosen Weg, so wird er um seiner Missetat willen sterben; du aber hast deine Seele gerettet!
20 Wenn aber ein Gerechter sich von seiner Gerechtigkeit abkehrt und Unrecht tut, und ich lege einen Anstoß vor ihn hin, so wird er sterben; wenn du ihn nicht warnst, wird er um seiner Sünde willen sterben, und an seine Gerechtigkeit, die er getan hat, wird nicht gedacht werden; aber sein Blut will ich von deiner Hand fordern!
21 Wenn du aber den Gerechten gewarnt hast, dass der Gerechte nicht sündigen soll, und er dann nicht sündigt, so wird er gewisslich am Leben bleiben, weil er sich hat warnen lassen; und du hast deine Seele gerettet!
22 Und die Hand des Herrn kam dort über mich, und er sprach zu mir: Mach dich auf, geh in die Talebene hinaus; dort will ich mit dir reden!
23 Als ich mich nun aufgemacht hatte und in die Talebene hinausgegangen war, siehe, da stand dort die Herrlichkeit des Herrn, gleich der Herrlichkeit, die ich beim Fluss Kebar gesehen hatte; und ich fiel auf mein Angesicht nieder.
24 Und der Geist kam in mich und stellte mich auf meine Füße; und er redete mit mir und sprach zu mir: Geh hin und schließe dich in dein Haus ein!
25 Und du, Menschensohn, siehe, man[h] wird dir Stricke anlegen und dich damit binden, sodass du nicht mitten unter sie wirst hinausgehen können.
26 Und ich will deine Zunge an deinem Gaumen kleben lassen, sodass du verstummst und sie nicht mehr zurechtweisen kannst; denn sie sind ein widerspenstiges Haus!
27 Aber wenn ich zu dir reden werde, so will ich deinen Mund auftun, dass du zu ihnen sagen sollst: »So spricht Gott, der Herr! Wer hören will, der höre, wer es aber unterlassen will, der unterlasse es!« Denn sie sind ein widerspenstiges Haus.

2 Azt mondta: „Ember fia![a] Állj fel, mert beszélni akarok veled!”
2 Amikor megszólított, a Szellem átjárt engem, és talpra állított, hogy figyelni tudjak arra, aki beszél velem. 3 Akkor az, aki megszólított, azt mondta: „Ember fia, elküldelek téged Izráel fiaihoz, a lázadó és engedetlen néphez, akik fellázadtak ellenem. Mind az ősök, mind pedig leszármazottjaik folyton vétkeztek ellenem mind a mai napig. 4 Ez a mostani nemzedék pedig makacs és keményfejű. Hozzájuk küldelek, hogy mondd nekik: »Ezt mondja Uram, az Örökkévaló…«. 5 Ők pedig, akár hallgatnak rád, és elfogadják az üzenetet, akár nem fogadják el, és nem hagyják abba gonoszságaikat — hiszen ellenem lázadó nép ez —, mindenképpen meg fogják tudni, hogy próféta van közöttük.
6 De neked, ember fia, nem szabad megijedned tőlük! Attól se félj, amit mondanak! Ha a szavuk megsebez, mint a tövises bozót; vagy éget, mint a csaláncsípés; sőt fájdalmas, mint a skorpió fullánkja, akkor se félj szavaiktól, akkor se rémülj meg tekintetüktől, hiszen ez a nép ellenem lázad! 7 Akármi történik is, szavaimat el kell mondanod nekik! Akár hallgatnak rá, akár nem, neked el kell mondanod, amit üzenek nekik — hiszen ez a nemzedék fellázadt ellenem!
8 Te azonban, ember fia, ne lázadj ellenem, és ne légy engedetlen, mint ez a nép! Figyelj arra, amit neked mondok, és hallgass rám: nyisd ki a szád, és edd meg, amit neked adok!”
9 Akkor láttam, hogy egy kéz nyúlik ki felém, amely könyvtekercset tartott. 10 Kiterítette előttem, és láttam, hogy a tekercs mindkét oldala tele van írva sírással, jajgatással és gyászénekkel.
3 Ezt mondta: „Ember fia, edd meg, amit itt látsz! Edd meg ezt a könyvtekercset, azután menj, és mondd el Izráel népének!”
2 Akkor nekem adta a könyvtekercset, én pedig kinyitottam a számat és megettem. 3 Azután azt mondta: „Ember fia, egészen töltsd meg a gyomrodat ezzel a könyvtekerccsel, amelyet én adok neked! Egész bensőd teljen meg vele!”
Akkor megettem a könyvtekercset, amely édes volt a számban, mint a méz.
4 Majd ezt mondta: „Ember fia, menj Izráel népéhez, és szólj hozzájuk az én szavaimmal! 5 Nem idegenekhez küldelek, hanem a saját népedhez. Nem olyanokhoz, akik más nyelven beszélnek, és nem értenék meg, amit mondasz, hanem Izráel népéhez. 6 Nem küldelek idegen országokba, ahol az emberek beszédét nem értenéd meg — bár, ha azokhoz küldenélek, ők bizony hallgatnának rád. 7 Nem, hanem Izráel népéhez küldelek, akiknek érted a nyelvét, és ők is téged.
Csakhogy ez a nép nem fog rád hallgatni, mivel nem akarnak rám hallgatni és nekem engedelmeskedni, mert egész Izráel keményfejű és makacs szívű. 8 Én azonban megkeményítettem arcodat, hogy megálld a helyedet velük szemben, és ugyanolyan keményfejűvé tettelek, mint amilyenek ők. 9 Sőt, amint a gyémánt keményebb a kovakőnél, a te elszántságodat is keményebbé tettem, mint az övék. Ezért ne félj tőlük, és ne ijedj meg tekintetüktől, hiszen ők ellenem lázadnak!”
10 Azután ezt mondta: „Ember fia, minden szót, amit neked mondok, figyelmesen hallgass meg, és jól véss a szívedbe, hogy el ne felejtsd! 11 Azután menj a Babilóniában élő száműzöttekhez, néped fiaihoz, és mondd nekik: »Ezt mondja Uram, az Örökkévaló…«! Akár hallgatnak rád, akár nem, el kell mondanod nekik, amit üzenek.”
12 Azután a Szellem felemelt engem, és ahogy az Örökkévaló dicsősége felemelkedett helyéről, a hátam mögül mennydörgéshez hasonló erős hangot hallottam. 13 Ekkor a négy mennyei teremtmény egymást érintő szárnyai ismét mozogni kezdtek, és zúgó hangot adtak. A mellettük lévő kerekek hangja olyan volt, mint a mennydörgés. 14 A Szellem felemelt, és magával ragadott. Az Örökkévaló keze súlyosan rám nehezedett, szellemem pedig megtelt haraggal és keserűséggel. 15 Megérkeztem az izráeli száműzöttekhez a Kebár folyó partjára, Tel Abíb-ba,[b] és ott ültem közöttük felindultan és némán hét napig.
Az őrálló felelőssége(A)
16 Hét nap múlva az Örökkévaló szava érkezett hozzám. Azt mondta: 17 „Ember fia, őrállóvá tettelek téged Izráel népe számára. Ezért halld meg, amit ajkam kimond, és figyelmeztesd őket az én nevemben! 18 Amikor azt mondom a bűnösnek: »Bizony, meg fogsz halni!« — neked figyelmeztetned kell őt, hogy letérítsd a rossz útról, és megmentsd az életét. Ha nem figyelmezteted, az a bűnös valóban meg fog halni a bűnei miatt — a haláláért azonban téged teszlek felelőssé, mert nem szóltál neki!
19 Viszont, ha figyelmezteted, és ő nem hallgat rád, nem változtat az életén, nem tér le a rossz útról, akkor — bár ő ugyanúgy meghal a bűnei miatt — te nem leszel felelős a haláláért.
20 Ha az igaz ember letér a jó útról, és vétkezik, akkor én a bukását okozom, és ő meg fog halni. Ha te nem figyelmezteted, akkor ő a saját vétke miatt hal meg, és a korábbi igazságos tetteit nem veszem tekintetbe — de téged teszlek felelőssé a haláláért.
21 Ha viszont az igaz embert figyelmezteted, hogy ne vétkezzen tovább; és ő hallgat a szavadra, jó útra tér, és nem vétkezik többé, akkor életben marad; és te is szabad leszel a felelősség súlyától.”
Látomás a völgyben
22 Az Örökkévaló rám tette a kezét, és azt mondta: „Kelj fel, menj ki a völgybe! Ott fogok beszélni veled.”
23 Akkor felkeltem, és kimentem a völgybe. Ott megjelent az Örökkévaló dicsősége: éppen olyannak láttam, mint a Kebár folyó mellett. Arccal a földre estem előtte. 24 A Szellem betöltött, és talpra állított. Ő pedig ezt mondta nekem: „Menj haza, és zárkózz be a házadba! 25 Ember fia, kötelekkel fognak megkötözni, és nem mehetsz ki az emberek közé. 26 Én fogom a nyelvedet a szájpadlásodhoz ragasztani, hogy ne szólhass egy szót sem. Így nem lesz senki, aki figyelmeztesse és helyreigazítsa ezt az ellenem lázadó nemzedéket, hogy többé ne vétkezzen. 27 Csak akkor szólhatsz hozzájuk, ha én szólok hozzád! Akkor majd megoldom a nyelvedet, és mondd nekik: »Ezt mondja Uram, az Örökkévaló…«. Aki akarja, hallja, és értse meg! Aki pedig nem akarja meghallani, hát ne törődjön vele — hiszen ez a nemzedék fellázadt ellenem.”

2 Il me dit : Fils d’homme, tiens-toi debout, et je vais te parler.
2 Dès qu’il m’eut adressé ces mots, l’Esprit entra en moi et me fit tenir debout, et j’entendis celui qui me parlait. 3 Il me dit : Fils d’homme, je t’envoie vers les Israélites, vers cette foule de rebelles qui se sont révoltés contre moi. Jusqu’à ce jour, eux et leurs ancêtres se sont soulevés contre moi. 4 C’est vers ces gens à la tête dure et au cœur insensible que je t’envoie pour que tu leur dises : « Voici ce que déclare le Seigneur, l’Eternel. » 5 Alors, soit qu’ils écoutent, soit qu’ils refusent d’écouter – car c’est une communauté rebelle – ils sauront du moins qu’il y a un prophète au milieu d’eux.
6 Quant à toi, fils d’homme, ne les crains pas, et ne crains pas leurs paroles, bien que tu sois au milieu d’orties et de ronces et que tu habites avec des scorpions. Ne crains pas leurs paroles et ne tremble pas devant eux, car c’est une communauté rebelle. 7 Tu leur transmettras donc mes paroles, soit qu’ils écoutent, soit qu’ils refusent d’écouter à cause de leur esprit rebelle.
La vision du rouleau
8 Et toi, fils d’homme, écoute ce que je te dis : Ne sois pas toi-même rebelle comme cette communauté rebelle ; ouvre ta bouche et mange ce que je te donne.
9 Je regardai, et je vis une main tendue vers moi qui tenait le rouleau d’un livre[a]. 10 Elle le déroula devant moi : il était couvert d’inscriptions au recto et au verso[b] : c’étaient des plaintes, des lamentations et des cris de malheur.
L’Eternel fortifie son prophète
3 Celui qui me parlait me dit : Fils d’homme, mange ce qui t’est présenté, avale ce rouleau, puis va parler à la communauté d’Israël.
2 J’ouvris la bouche et il me fit manger le rouleau. 3 Puis il me dit : Fils d’homme, nourris ton corps et remplis ton ventre de ce rouleau que je te donne.
Je le mangeai donc et, dans ma bouche, il fut doux comme du miel. 4 Il ajouta : Fils d’homme, va, rends-toi auprès des Israélites et communique-leur mes paroles. 5 Car ce n’est pas vers un peuple qui parle une langue difficile et inintelligible que tu es envoyé, mais vers la communauté d’Israël.
6 Si je t’envoyais vers de nombreux peuples à la langue difficile et inintelligible dont tu ne comprendrais pas les paroles, eux ils t’écouteraient. 7 Mais la communauté d’Israël vers laquelle je t’envoie ne voudra pas t’écouter, car ils ne veulent pas m’écouter. En effet, tous ces Israélites sont des gens à la tête dure et au cœur insensible. 8 Eh bien, je vais te donner un visage aussi obstiné que le leur et un front aussi résolu que le leur. 9 Je vais rendre ton front aussi dur que le diamant, plus dur que le roc. Ne les crains donc pas et ne tremble pas en leur présence, bien que ce soit une communauté de rebelles.
10 Puis il ajouta : Fils d’homme, écoute attentivement tout ce que je vais te dire et prends-le bien à cœur. 11 Puis va te rendre auprès de tes compatriotes déportés pour leur parler, et – qu’ils t’écoutent ou qu’ils refusent de t’écouter – dis-leur : « Voici ce que déclare le Seigneur, l’Eternel. »
Emporté par l’Esprit de Dieu
12 Alors l’Esprit me souleva et j’entendis derrière moi une grande clameur : Bénie soit la gloire de l’Eternel, du lieu où elle demeure.
13 Je perçus aussi le bruit que faisaient les ailes des êtres vivants en battant l’une contre l’autre, et en même temps celui des roues, et la grande clameur. 14 Alors l’Esprit me souleva de terre et m’emporta. Je partis, le cœur plein d’amertume et d’indignation, tandis que la main de l’Eternel agissait sur moi avec force. 15 J’arrivai ainsi auprès des exilés, à Tel-Aviv[c], chez ceux qui habitaient sur les bords du canal du Kebar, car c’est là qu’ils demeuraient. Je restai là sept jours, hébété, au milieu d’eux.
Les conditions d’exercice du ministère
Comme une sentinelle
16 Au bout de ces sept jours, l’Eternel m’adressa la parole en ces termes :
17 Fils d’homme, j’ai fait de toi une sentinelle pour la communauté d’Israël. Quand tu entendras une parole de ma bouche, tu les avertiras de ma part. 18 Quand je dirai au coupable : « Tu vas mourir », si tu ne l’avertis pas, si tu ne parles pas pour avertir ce coupable et lui demander d’abandonner sa mauvaise conduite pour obtenir la vie sauve, alors, certes, ce coupable mourra à cause de sa faute, mais je te demanderai compte de sa mort. 19 Si, par contre, tu as averti le coupable et qu’il ne se détourne pas de sa méchanceté ni de sa conduite coupable, il mourra pour sa faute, mais toi, tu auras la vie sauve.
20 De même, si un homme juste se détourne de sa conduite juste pour faire le mal, alors je placerai quelque occasion de chute devant lui, et s’il meurt pour n’avoir pas été averti, certes, c’est à cause de sa faute qu’il mourra, et l’on ne tiendra pas compte de sa conduite juste du passé, mais je te demanderai compte de sa mort. 21 Mais si tu as averti l’homme juste pour qu’il ne commette pas de faute, et qu’effectivement il n’en commette pas, alors il vivra pour avoir entendu tes avertissements et toi, tu auras la vie sauve.
Jours de silence
22 La main de l’Eternel fut encore sur moi en ce lieu, et il me dit : Lève-toi, sors vers la vallée, et là je te parlerai.
23 Je me levai donc et je sortis vers la vallée. Et voici que la gloire de l’Eternel se tenait là, identique à la gloire que j’avais contemplée près du canal du Kebar. Alors je tombai la face contre terre. 24 Mais l’Esprit entra en moi et me fit tenir debout. Il me parla et me dit : Va t’enfermer dans ta maison. 25 Or, fils d’homme, on viendra te ligoter avec des cordes, de sorte que tu ne pourras plus sortir au milieu de tes compatriotes. 26 Je collerai ta langue à ton palais et tu seras muet ; ainsi tu cesseras d’intercéder pour eux, car c’est un peuple rebelle. 27 Mais quand je te parlerai, je t’ouvrirai la bouche. Alors tu leur diras : « Voici ce que déclare le Seigneur, l’Eternel : Celui qui veut écouter, qu’il écoute, et celui qui refuse d’écouter, qu’il n’écoute pas – car c’est une communauté rebelle. »
