The Prophet’s Call

2 Then He said to me, “Son of man, ^(A)stand on your feet, and I will speak with you.” ²And as He spoke to me the ^(B)Spirit entered me and set me on my feet; and I heard Him speaking to me. ³Then He said to me, “Son of man, I am sending you to the sons of Israel, to a rebellious people who have ^(C)rebelled against Me; ^(D)they and their fathers have revolted against Me to this very day. ⁴So I am sending you to those who are ^[a]^(E)impudent and obstinate children, and you shall say to them, ‘This is what the Lord ^[b]God says:’ ⁵As for them, ^(F)whether they listen or ^[c]not—for they are a rebellious house—they will ^(G)know that a prophet has been among them. ⁶And as for you, son of man, you are ^(H)not to fear them nor fear their words, though ^(I)thistles and thorns are with you and you sit on scorpions; you are not to fear their words nor be dismayed at their presence, since they are a rebellious house. ⁷But you shall ^(J)speak My words to them ^(K)whether they listen or ^[d]not, for they are rebellious.

⁸“Now you, son of man, listen to what I am speaking to you; do not be rebellious like that rebellious house. Open your mouth wide and ^(L)eat what I am giving you.” ⁹Then I looked, and behold, a ^(M)hand was extended to me; and behold, a ^[e]^(N)scroll was in it. ¹⁰When He spread it out before me, it was written on the front and back, and written on it were songs of mourning, sighing, and ^(O)woe.

Rulers Denounced

3 And I said,

“^(A)Hear now, you ^[a]leaders of Jacob
And rulers of the house of Israel:
Is it not for you to ^(B)know justice?
²You who hate good and love evil,
Who ^(C)tear off their skin from them
And their flesh from their bones,
³Who ^(D)eat the flesh of my people,
Strip off their skin from them,
Smash their bones,
And ^(E)chop them up as for the pot,
And as meat in a cauldron!”
⁴Then they will ^(F)cry out to the Lord,
But He will not answer them.
Instead, He will ^(G)hide His face from them at that time
Because they have ^(H)practiced evil deeds.

⁵This is what the Lord says concerning the prophets who ^(I)lead my people astray:

When they have something to bite with their teeth,
They ^(J)cry out, “Peace!”
But against him who puts nothing in their mouths
They declare holy war.
⁶Therefore it will be ^(K)night for you—without vision,
And darkness for you—without divination.
The ^(L)sun will go down on the prophets,
And the day will become dark over them.
⁷The seers will be ^(M)put to shame,
And the ^(N)diviners will be ashamed.
Indeed, they will all ^(O)cover their ^[b]lips
Because there is ^(P)no answer from God.
⁸On the other hand, ^(Q)I am filled with power—
With the Spirit of the Lord—
And with justice and courage
To ^(R)make known to Jacob his rebellious act,
And to Israel his sin.
⁹Now hear this, you ^(S)heads of the house of Jacob
And rulers of the house of Israel,
Who ^(T)despise justice
And twist everything that is straight,
¹⁰Who ^(U)build Zion with bloodshed,
And Jerusalem with malice.
¹¹Her leaders pronounce ^(V)judgment for a bribe,
Her ^(W)priests teach for pay,
And her prophets divine for money.
Yet they lean on the Lord, saying,
“^(X)Is the Lord not in our midst?
Catastrophe will not come upon us.”
¹²Therefore on account of you,
^(Y)Zion will be plowed like a field,
^(Z)Jerusalem will become a heap of ruins,
And the ^(AA)mountain of the ^[c]temple will become high places of a forest.

Rewards for Obedience to God

56 This is what the Lord says:
“^(A)Guard justice and do righteousness,
For My ^(B)salvation is about to come
And My righteousness to be revealed.
²^(C)Blessed is a man who does this,
And a son of man who ^(D)takes hold of it;
Who ^(E)keeps from profaning the Sabbath,
And keeps his hand from doing any evil.”
³Let not the ^(F)foreigner who has joined himself to the Lord say,
“The Lord will certainly separate me from His people.”
Nor let the ^(G)eunuch say, “Behold, I am a dry tree.”
⁴For this is what the Lord says:
“To the eunuchs who ^(H)keep My Sabbaths,
And choose what pleases Me,
And ^(I)hold firmly to My covenant,
⁵To them I will give in My ^(J)house and within My ^(K)walls a memorial,
And a name better than that of sons and daughters;
I will give ^[a]them an everlasting ^(L)name which ^(M)will not be eliminated.

⁶“Also the ^(N)foreigners who join themselves to the Lord,
To attend to His service and to love the name of the Lord,
To be His servants, every one who ^(O)keeps the Sabbath so as not to profane it,
And holds firmly to My covenant;
⁷Even ^(P)those I will bring to My ^(Q)holy mountain,
And ^(R)make them joyful in My house of prayer.
Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be acceptable on ^(S)My altar;
For ^(T)My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples.”
⁸The Lord ^[b]God, who ^(U)gathers the dispersed of Israel, declares,
“I will yet gather ^(V)others to ^[c]them, to those already gathered.”

⁹All you ^[d]^(W)wild animals,
All you animals in the forest,
Come to eat.
¹⁰His ^(X)watchmen are ^(Y)blind,
All of them know nothing.
All of them are mute dogs unable to bark,
Dreamers lying down, who love to slumber;
¹¹And the dogs are ^[e]^(Z)greedy, they ^[f]are never satisfied.
And they are shepherds who have ^(AA)no understanding;
They have all ^(AB)turned to their own way,
Each one to his unjust gain, ^[g]without exception.
¹²“Come,” they say, “^[h]let’s get ^(AC)wine, and let’s drink heavily of intoxicating drink;
And ^(AD)tomorrow will be like today, only more so.”
