18  I puta mai ano te kupu a Ihowa ki ahau, i mea,

He aha ra tenei whakatauki i whakataukitia ai e koutou mo te oneone o Iharaira? e ki na hoki koutou, I kai nga matua i nga karepe kaiota, a maniania ana nga niho o nga tamariki.

Nana, ko nga wairua katoa, naku; he pera i te wairua o te papa, naku ano hoki te wairua o te tama: ko te wairua e hara ana, ka mate tera.

Ki te mea ia he tika tetahi tangata, a ka mahia e ia te mea e rite ana, e tika ana,

Ki te mea kihai ia i kai ki runga ki nga maunga, kihai ona kanohi i anga ake ki nga whakapakoko o te whare o Iharaira, ki te mea kihai i poke i a ia te wahine a tona hoa, a kihai ia i whakatata ki te wahine e paheke ana;

Ki te mea kihai tetahi tangata i tukinotia e ia, engari i whakahokia e ia tana taunaha ki te tangata i a ia nei ana moni, ki te mea kihai ia i tukino i tetahi, i pahua, ki te mea i homai e ia tana taro ma te tangata e hemokai ana, i hipokina e ia ki te kakahu te tangata e noho tahanga ana;

Ko te tangata kahore ana mea i hoatu hei moni whakatupu, kahore hoki he hua i riro i a ia, ko te tangata i whakahokia e ia tona ringa i te kino, he pono ano tana whakawa mo tetahi, mo tetahi,

I haere i runga i aku tikanga, i pupuri tonu i aku whakaritenga, i pono tonu te mahi; he tika tera, ka ora ia, e ai ta te Ariki, ta Ihowa.

10 Ki te whanau tetahi tama mana, he tahae, he kaiwhakaheke toto, a ka mahia e ia tetahi o enei mea,

19 Otira kei te mea koutou, He aha ra te tama te waha ai i te kino o te papa? Ki te mahia e te tama te mea e rite ana, e tika ana, a ka puritia e ia aku tikanga, ka mahia ano e ia, ina, ka ora ia.

20 Ko te wairua e hara ana, ko tera e mate. E kore te tama e waha i te kino o te papa, e kore ano te papa e waha i te kino o te tama: ko runga ano i a ia te tika o te tangata tika, a ko te kino o te tangata kino hei runga ano i a ia.

21 Ki te tahuri ia te tangata kino i ona hara katoa i mahia e ia, a ka puritia e ia aku tikanga katoa, ka mahia ano e ia te mea e rite ana, e tika ana, ina, ka ora ia, e kore ia e mate.

22 E kore tetahi o ona he i mahia e ia e maharatia ki a ia; ka ora ia i tona tika i mahia e ia.

Tena ra, whakarongo mai, e te whare o Iharaira, Kahore ranei toku ara e taurite? he teka ianei no koutou nga ara kahore e taurite?

26 Ki te tahuri atu te tangata tika i tona tika, a ka mahi i te kino, mate iho ki reira; e mate ia mo tana kino i mahia e ia.

27 Tenei ano, ki te tahuri mai te tangata kino i tana kino i mahia e ia, a ka mahia e ia te mea e rite ana, e tika ana, ka ora ano i a ia tona wairua.

28 Nana hoki i whakaaro, a tahuri mai ana i ona he katoa i mahia e ia; ina, ka ora ia, e kore e mate.

29 Heoi kei te mea te whare o Iharaira, Kahore e taurite te ara o te Ariki. Kahore ranei oku ara e taurite, e te whare o Iharaira? he teka ianei no koutou nga ara kahore e taurite?

30 Ae ra, ka rite ki tona ara, ki tona ara, taku whakawa i a koutou, e te whare o Iharaira, e ai ta te Ariki, ta Ihowa, Ripeneta, tahuri mai hoki i o koutou he katoa, a e kore te he e waiho hei whakataka mo koutou.

31 Maka atu, kia matara atu i a koutou o koutou he katoa i he ai koutou; mahia hoki he ngakau hou, he wairua hou mo koutou; kia mate hoki koutou hei aha, e te whare o Iharaira?

A False Proverb Refuted

18 The word of the Lord came to me again, saying, “What do you mean when you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying:

‘The (A)fathers have eaten sour grapes,
And the children’s teeth are set on edge’?

As I live,” says the Lord God, “you shall no longer use this proverb in Israel.

“Behold, all souls are (B)Mine;
The soul of the father
As well as the soul of the son is Mine;
(C)The soul who sins shall die.
But if a man is just
And does what is lawful and right;
(D)If he has not eaten [a]on the mountains,
Nor lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel,
Nor (E)defiled his neighbor’s wife,
Nor approached (F)a woman during her impurity;
If he has not (G)oppressed anyone,
But has restored to the debtor his (H)pledge;
Has robbed no one by violence,
But has (I)given his bread to the hungry
And covered the naked with (J)clothing;
If he has not [b]exacted (K)usury
Nor taken any increase,
But has withdrawn his hand from iniquity
And (L)executed true [c]judgment between man and man;
If he has walked in My statutes
And kept My judgments faithfully—
He is just;
He shall surely (M)live!”
Says the Lord God.

10 “If he begets a son who is a robber
Or (N)a shedder of blood,
Who does any of these things
11 And does none of those duties,
But has eaten [d]on the mountains
Or defiled his neighbor’s wife;
12 If he has oppressed the poor and needy,
Robbed by violence,
Not restored the pledge,
Lifted his eyes to the idols,
Or (O)committed abomination;
13 If he has exacted usury
Or taken increase—
Shall he then live?
He shall not live!
If he has done any of these abominations,
He shall surely die;
(P)His blood shall be upon him.

14 If, however, he begets a son
Who sees all the sins which his father has done,
And considers but does not do likewise;
15 (Q)Who has not eaten [e]on the mountains,
Nor lifted his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel,
Nor defiled his neighbor’s wife;
16 Has not oppressed anyone,
Nor withheld a pledge,
Nor robbed by violence,
But has given his bread to the hungry
And covered the naked with clothing;
17 Who has withdrawn his hand from [f]the poor
And not received usury or increase,
But has executed My judgments
And walked in My statutes—
He shall not die for the iniquity of his father;
He shall surely live!

18 As for his father,
Because he cruelly oppressed,
Robbed his brother by violence,
And did what is not good among his people,
Behold, (R)he shall die for his iniquity.

Turn and Live

19 “Yet you say, ‘Why (S)should the son not bear the guilt of the father?’ Because the son has done what is lawful and right, and has kept all My statutes and observed them, he shall surely live. 20 (T)The soul who sins shall die. (U)The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. (V)The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, (W)and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.

21 “But (X)if a wicked man turns from all his sins which he has committed, keeps all My statutes, and does what is lawful and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 22 (Y)None of the transgressions which he has committed shall be remembered against him; because of the righteousness which he has done, he shall (Z)live. 23 (AA)Do I have any pleasure at all that the wicked should die?” says the Lord God, “and not that he should turn from his ways and live?

24 “But (AB)when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? (AC)All the righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; because of the unfaithfulness of which he is guilty and the sin which he has committed, because of them he shall die.

25 “Yet you say, (AD)‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ Hear now, O house of Israel, is it not My way which is fair, and your ways which are not fair? 26 (AE)When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, commits iniquity, and dies in it, it is because of the iniquity which he has done that he dies. 27 Again, (AF)when a wicked man turns away from the wickedness which he committed, and does what is lawful and right, he preserves himself alive. 28 Because he (AG)considers and turns away from all the transgressions which he committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 29 (AH)Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ O house of Israel, is it not My ways which are fair, and your ways which are not fair?

30 (AI)“Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways,” says the Lord God. (AJ)“Repent, and turn from all your transgressions, so that iniquity will not be your ruin. 31 (AK)Cast away from you all the transgressions which you have committed, and get yourselves a (AL)new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, O house of Israel? 32 For (AM)I have no pleasure in the death of one who dies,” says the Lord God. “Therefore turn and (AN)live!”

God Is Fair

18 The Lord spoke his word to me. He said: “What do you mean by using this saying about the land of Israel:

‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes.
    And that caused the children to grind their teeth from the sour taste’?

“As surely as I live, says the Lord God, this is true: You will not use this saying in Israel anymore. Every living thing belongs to me. The life of the father is mine. And the life of the son is mine. The person who sins will die.

“There may be a good person. This person does what is fair and right. He does not eat at the mountain places of worship. He does not look to the idols of Israel for help. He does not commit adultery with his neighbor’s wife. He does not have physical relations with a woman during her time of monthly bleeding. He does not mistreat anyone. But he returns what was given as a promise for a loan. He does not rob other people. He gives bread to hungry people. He gives clothes to those who have no clothes. He does not lend money to get too much interest or profit. He keeps his hand from doing wrong. He judges fairly between men. He lives by my rules and obeys my laws faithfully. The person who does all these things is good. He will surely live, says the Lord God.

10 “But this person might have a wild son who murders people. This son may do any of these other bad things. 11 (But the father himself has not done any of these things.) This son eats at the mountain places of worship. He commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife. 12 He mistreats the poor and needy. He steals things. He refuses to return what was promised for a loan. He looks to idols for help. He does things which I hate. 13 He lends money for too much interest and profit. Will this son live? No, he will not live! He has done all these hated things. He will surely be put to death. He will be responsible for his own sins.

14 “But this son might have a son who has seen the sins his father did. But after seeing them, he does not do those things. 15 He does not eat at the mountain places of worship. He does not look to the idols of Israel for help. He does not commit adultery with his neighbor’s wife. 16 He does not mistreat anyone. He does not keep something promised for a loan. He does not steal. But he gives bread to the hungry people. He gives clothes to people without clothes. 17 He keeps his hand from doing wrong. He does not take too much interest or profit when he lends money. He obeys my laws and lives by my rules. He will not die for his father’s sin. He will surely live. 18 But his father took other people’s money unfairly. He robbed his brother. He did what was wrong among his people. So he will die for his own sin.

19 “But you ask, ‘Why is the son not punished for the father’s sin?’ The son has done what is fair and right. He obeys all my rules. So he will surely live. 20 It is the person who sins that will die. The son will not be punished for the father’s sin. The father will not be punished for the son’s sin. The person who does right is responsible for his own goodness. The evil person is responsible for his own evil.

21 “But the evil person might stop doing all the sins he has done. And he might obey all my rules and do what is fair and right. Then he will surely live. He will not die. 22 His sins will be forgotten. Now he does what is right. So he will live. 23 I do not really want the evil person to die, says the Lord God. I want him to stop his bad ways and live.

24 “But a person who does right might stop doing good and do wrong. And he might do the same hated things an evil person does. Will he live? All his good acts will be forgotten. This is because he became unfaithful. He has sinned. So he will die because of his sins.

25 “But you say, ‘What the Lord does isn’t fair.’ Hear now, people of Israel. I am fair. It is what you do that is not fair! 26 A good person might stop doing good. He might do wrong and die because of it. He will die because he did wrong. 27 An evil person might stop doing the evil things he has done. And he might do what is fair and right. He will save his life. 28 He thought about it and stopped doing all the sins he had done. He will surely live. He will not die. 29 But the people of Israel still say, ‘What the Lord does isn’t fair.’ People of Israel, I am fair. It is what you do that is not fair.

30 “So I will judge you, people of Israel. I will judge each person by what he does, says the Lord God. Change your hearts. Stop all your sinning. Then sin will not bring your ruin. 31 Get rid of all the sins you have done. And get for yourselves a new heart and a new way to think. Why do you want to die, people of Israel? 32 I do not want anyone to die. So change your hearts and lives so you may live.
