Ezekiel 18:19-23:37

¹⁹ “Yet you say, ^(A)‘Why should not the son suffer for the iniquity of the father?’ When the son has done ^(B)what is just and right, and has been careful to observe all my statutes, ^(C)he shall surely live. ^20 (D)The soul who sins shall die. ^(E)The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. ^(F)The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, ^(G)and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.

^21 (H)“But if a wicked person turns away from all his sins that he has committed and keeps all my statutes and does ^(I)what is just and right, ^(J)he shall surely live; he shall not die. ^22 (K)None of the transgressions that he has committed shall be remembered against him; for the righteousness that he has done he shall live. ^23 (L)Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, declares the Lord God, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live? ^24 (M)But when a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice and does the same abominations that the wicked person does, shall he live? ^(N)None of the righteous deeds that he has done shall be remembered; for ^(O)the treachery of which he is guilty and the sin he has committed, for them he shall die.

^25 (P)“Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? ^26 (Q)When a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it; for the injustice that he has done he shall die. ²⁷ Again, ^(R)when a wicked person turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he shall save his life. ²⁸ Because he considered and turned away from all the transgressions that he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. ²⁹ Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, are my ways not just? Is it not your ways that are not just?

³⁰ “Therefore ^(S)I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, declares the Lord God. ^(T)Repent and turn from all your transgressions, ^(U)lest iniquity be your ruin.^{[a] 31 (V)}Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and ^(W)make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! ^(X)Why will you die, O house of Israel? ^32 (Y)For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord God; ^(Z)so turn, and live.”

A Lament for the Princes of Israel

19 And you, ^(AA)take up a lamentation for the princes of Israel, ² and say:

This is ^(AU)a lamentation and has become a lamentation.

Israel's Continuing Rebellion

20 ^(AV)In the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth day of the month, certain of ^(AW)the elders of Israel came to inquire of the Lord, ^(AX)and sat before me. ² And the word of the Lord came to me: ^3 (AY)“Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God, Is it to inquire of me that you come? ^(AZ)As I live, declares the Lord God, ^(BA)I will not be inquired of by you. ^4 (BB)Will you judge them, son of man, will you judge them? ^(BC)Let them know the abominations of their fathers, ⁵ and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: ^(BD)On the day when I chose Israel, ^(BE)I swore^[f] to the offspring of the house of Jacob, ^(BF)making myself known to them in the land of Egypt; ^(BG)I swore to them, saying, I am the Lord your God. ⁶ On that day I swore to them that ^(BH)I would bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had searched out for them, a land ^(BI)flowing with milk and honey, ^(BJ)the most glorious of all lands. ⁷ And I said to them, ^(BK)‘Cast away the detestable things ^(BL)your eyes feast on, every one of you, and do not defile yourselves with ^(BM)the idols of Egypt; ^(BN)I am the Lord your God.’ ^8 (BO)But they rebelled against me and were not willing to listen to me. ^(BP)None of them cast away the detestable things their eyes feasted on, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt.

“Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them ^(BQ)and spend my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt. ^9 (BR)But I acted ^(BS)for the sake of my name, ^(BT)that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations among whom they lived, ^(BU)in whose sight I made myself known to them in bringing them out of the land of Egypt. ^10 (BV)So I led them out of the land of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness. ^11 (BW)I gave them my statutes and made known to them my rules, ^(BX)by which, if a person does them, he shall live. ¹² Moreover, I gave them ^(BY)my Sabbaths, as a sign between me and them, ^(BZ)that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them. ^13 (CA)But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. ^(CB)They did not walk in my statutes but rejected my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live; ^(CC)and my Sabbaths they greatly profaned.

^(CD)“Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them in the wilderness, to make a full end of them. ¹⁴ But I acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, ^(CE)in whose sight I had brought them out. ¹⁵ Moreover, ^(CF)I swore to them in the wilderness ^(CG)that I would not bring them into the land that I had given them, a land ^(CH)flowing with milk and honey, ^(CI)the most glorious of all lands, ¹⁶ because they rejected my rules and did not walk in my statutes, and profaned my Sabbaths; ^(CJ)for their heart went after their idols. ¹⁷ Nevertheless, ^(CK)my eye spared them, and I did not destroy them or ^(CL)make a full end of them in the wilderness.

¹⁸ “And I said to ^(CM)their children in the wilderness, ‘Do not walk ^(CN)in the statutes of your fathers, nor keep their rules, ^(CO)nor defile yourselves with their idols. ^19 (CP)I am the Lord your God; ^(CQ)walk in my statutes, and be careful to obey my rules, ²⁰ and ^(CR)keep my Sabbaths holy that ^(CS)they may be a sign between me and you, that you may know that I am the Lord your God.’ ^21 (CT)But the children ^(CU)rebelled against me. ^(CV)They did not walk in my statutes and were not careful to obey my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live; they profaned my Sabbaths.

^(CW)“Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them and spend my anger against them in the wilderness. ^22 (CX)But I withheld my hand ^(CY)and acted for the sake of my name, ^(CZ)that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I had brought them out. ^23 (DA)Moreover, ^(DB)I swore to them in the wilderness ^(DC)that I would scatter them among the nations and disperse them through the countries, ²⁴ because they had not obeyed my rules, but had rejected my statutes and profaned my Sabbaths, ^(DD)and their eyes were set on their fathers' idols. ^25 (DE)Moreover, I gave them statutes that were not good and rules by which they could not have life, ²⁶ and I defiled them through ^(DF)their very gifts ^(DG)in their offering up all their firstborn, that I might devastate them. I did it ^(DH)that they might know that I am the Lord.

²⁷ “Therefore, ^(DI)son of man, speak to the house of Israel and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: In this also your fathers blasphemed me, by ^(DJ)dealing treacherously with me. ²⁸ For when I had brought them into the land that ^(DK)I swore to give them, then wherever they saw ^(DL)any high hill or any leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices and there they presented ^(DM)the provocation of their offering; there they sent up their pleasing aromas, and there they poured out their drink offerings. ²⁹ (I said to them, ^(DN)‘What is the high place to which you go?’ So its name is called Bamah^[g] to this day.)

³⁰ “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: ^(DO)Will you defile yourselves after the manner of your fathers and go ^(DP)whoring after their detestable things? ³¹ When you present your gifts and ^(DQ)offer up your children in fire,^[h] you defile yourselves with all your idols to this day. And ^(DR)shall I be inquired of by you, O house of Israel? ^(DS)As I live, declares the Lord God, I will not be inquired of by you.

^32 (DT)“What is in your mind shall never happen—the thought, ^(DU)‘Let us be like the nations, like the tribes of the countries, ^(DV)and worship wood and stone.’

The Lord Will Restore Israel

^33 (DW)“As I live, declares the Lord God, ^(DX)surely with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and ^(DY)with wrath poured out I will be king over you. ^34 (DZ)I will bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries where you are scattered, with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and with wrath poured out. ^35 (EA)And I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, ^(EB)and there I will enter into judgment with you ^(EC)face to face. ^36 (ED)As I entered into judgment with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will enter into judgment with you, declares the Lord God. ³⁷ I will make you ^(EE)pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant. ^38 (EF)I will purge out the rebels from among you, and those who transgress against me. ^(EG)I will bring them out of the land where they sojourn, ^(EH)but they shall not enter the land of Israel. ^(EI)Then you will know that I am the Lord.

³⁹ “As for you, O house of Israel, thus says the Lord God: ^(EJ)Go serve every one of you his idols, now and hereafter, if you will not listen to me; ^(EK)but my holy name you shall no more profane with your gifts and your idols.

^40 (EL)“For on my holy mountain, the mountain height of Israel, declares the Lord God, there ^(EM)all the house of Israel, all of them, shall serve me in the land. ^(EN)There I will accept them, and there I will require your contributions and the choicest of your gifts, with all your sacred offerings. ⁴¹ As a pleasing aroma I will accept you, when ^(EO)I bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries where you have been scattered. And ^(EP)I will manifest my holiness among you in the sight of the nations. ^42 (EQ)And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I bring you into the land of Israel, the country that ^(ER)I swore to give to your fathers. ^43 (ES)And there you shall remember your ways and all your deeds with which you have defiled yourselves, ^(ET)and you shall loathe yourselves for all the evils that you have committed. ⁴⁴ And you shall know that I am the Lord, ^(EU)when I deal with you for my name's sake, ^(EV)not according to your evil ways, nor according to your corrupt deeds, O house of Israel, declares the Lord God.”

^45 [i] And the word of the Lord came to me: ^46 (EW)“Son of man, ^(EX)set your face toward the southland;^{[j] (EY)}preach against the south, and prophesy against the forest land in the Negeb. ⁴⁷ Say to the forest of the Negeb, Hear the word of the Lord: Thus says the Lord God, Behold, ^(EZ)I will kindle a fire in you, and it shall devour every ^(FA)green tree in you and every ^(FB)dry tree. The blazing flame shall not be quenched, and ^(FC)all faces from south to north shall be scorched by it. ^48 (FD)All flesh shall see that I the Lord have kindled it; it shall not be quenched.” ⁴⁹ Then I said, ^(FE)“Ah, Lord God! They are saying of me, ^(FF)‘Is he not a maker of parables?’”

The Lord Has Drawn His Sword

21 ^[k] The word of the Lord came to me: ^2 (FG)“Son of man, ^(FH)set your face toward Jerusalem and ^(FI)preach against the sanctuaries.^[l] Prophesy against the land of Israel ³ and say to the land of Israel, Thus says the Lord: ^(FJ)Behold, I am against you and will draw ^(FK)my sword from its sheath and ^(FL)will cut off from you both righteous and wicked. ⁴ Because I will cut off from you both righteous and wicked, therefore my sword shall be drawn from its sheath against all flesh from south to north. ^5 (FM)And all flesh shall know that I am the Lord. I have drawn ^(FN)my sword from its sheath; ^(FO)it shall not be sheathed again.

⁶ “As for you, son of man, ^(FP)groan; with breaking heart and bitter grief, ^(FQ)groan before their eyes. ^7 (FR)And when they say to you, ‘Why do you groan?’ you shall say, ‘Because of the news ^(FS)that it is coming. ^(FT)Every heart will melt, and ^(FU)all hands will be feeble; every spirit will faint, and ^(FV)all knees will be weak as water. ^(FW)Behold, it is ^(FX)coming, and it will be fulfilled,’” declares the Lord God.

⁸ And the word of the Lord came to me: ^9 (FY)“Son of man, prophesy and say, Thus says the Lord, say:

(Or ^(GC)shall we rejoice? You have despised the rod, my son, ^(GD)with everything of wood.)^{[m] 11} So the sword is given to be polished, that it may be grasped in the hand. It is sharpened and polished ^(GE)to be given into the hand of the slayer. ^12 (GF)Cry out and wail, son of man, for it is against my people. It is against all the princes of Israel. They are delivered over to the sword with my people. ^(GG)Strike therefore upon your thigh. ¹³ For it will not be a testing—what could it do if you despise ^(GH)the rod?”^[n] declares the Lord God.

¹⁴ “As for you, ^(GI)son of man, prophesy. ^(GJ)Clap your hands and let the sword come down twice, ^(GK)yes, three times,^[o] the sword for those to be slain. It is the sword for the great slaughter, which surrounds them, ¹⁵ that their hearts may melt, and many stumble.^[p] At all their gates I have given the glittering sword. Ah, it is made like lightning; ^(GL)it is taken up^[q] for slaughter. ¹⁶ Cut sharply to the right; set yourself to the left, wherever your face is directed. ¹⁷ I also will ^(GM)clap my hands, ^(GN)and I will satisfy my fury; ^(GO)I the Lord have spoken.”

¹⁸ The word of the Lord came to me again: ¹⁹ “As for you, son of man, mark two ways for ^(GP)the sword of the king of Babylon to come. Both of them shall come from the same land. And make ^(GQ)a signpost; make it ^(GR)at the head of the way to a city. ²⁰ Mark a way ^(GS)for the sword to come to Rabbah of the Ammonites and to Judah, into Jerusalem the fortified. ²¹ For the king of Babylon stands ^(GT)at the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use divination. He shakes the arrows; he consults ^(GU)the teraphim;^[r] he looks at the liver. ²² Into his right hand comes the divination for Jerusalem, ^(GV)to set battering rams, to open the mouth with murder, to lift up the voice with shouting, to set battering rams against the gates, ^(GW)to cast up mounds, to build siege towers. ²³ But to them it will seem like a false divination. ^(GX)They have sworn solemn oaths, but he brings their guilt to remembrance, ^(GY)that they may be taken.

²⁴ “Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you have made your guilt to be remembered, in that your transgressions are uncovered, so that in all your deeds your sins appear—because you have come to remembrance, ^(GZ)you shall be taken in hand. ²⁵ And you, O profane^{[s] (HA)}wicked one, prince of Israel, ^(HB)whose day has come, ^(HC)the time of your final punishment, ²⁶ thus says the Lord God: Remove the turban and take off the crown. Things shall not remain as they are. ^(HD)Exalt that which is low, and bring low that which is exalted. ²⁷ A ruin, ruin, ruin I will make it. ^(HE)This also shall not be, ^(HF)until he comes, the one to whom judgment belongs, and I will give it to him.

²⁸ “And you, ^(HG)son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus says the Lord God ^(HH)concerning the Ammonites and concerning their reproach; say, ^(HI)A sword, a sword ^(HJ)is drawn for the slaughter. ^(HK)It is polished to consume and to flash like lightning— ²⁹ while ^(HL)they see for you false visions, while they divine lies for you—to place you on the necks of the profane wicked, ^(HM)whose day has come, the time of their final punishment. ^30 (HN)Return it to its sheath. In the place where you were created, in the land of your origin, ^(HO)I will judge you. ³¹ And ^(HP)I will pour out my indignation upon you; ^(HQ)I will blow upon you with the fire of my wrath, and I will deliver you into the hands of ^(HR)brutish men, skillful to destroy. ³² You shall be fuel for the fire. Your blood shall be in the midst of the land. ^(HS)You shall be no more remembered, ^(HT)for I the Lord have spoken.”

Israel's Shedding of Blood

22 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ² “And you, ^(HU)son of man, ^(HV)will you judge, will you judge ^(HW)the bloody city? ^(HX)Then declare to her all her abominations. ³ You shall say, Thus says the Lord God: A city that sheds blood in her midst, so that ^(HY)her time may come, and that makes idols to defile herself! ⁴ You have become guilty ^(HZ)by the blood that you have shed, and defiled by the idols that you have made, and you have brought ^(IA)your days near, the appointed time of^[t] your years has come. ^(IB)Therefore I have made you a reproach to the nations, and a mockery to all the countries. ⁵ Those who are near and those who are far from you will mock you; ^(IC)your name is defiled; ^(ID)you are full of tumult.

⁶ “Behold, ^(IE)the princes of Israel in you, every one according to his power, have been bent on shedding blood. ⁷ Father and mother ^(IF)are treated with contempt in you; the sojourner ^(IG)suffers extortion in your midst; the fatherless and the widow ^(IH)are wronged in you. ^8 (II)You have despised my holy things and ^(IJ)profaned my Sabbaths. ^9 (IK)There are men in you who slander to shed blood, and people in you ^(IL)who eat on the mountains; ^(IM)they commit lewdness in your midst. ¹⁰ In you ^(IN)men uncover their fathers' nakedness; in you they violate women who are unclean in their menstrual impurity. ^11 (IO)One commits abomination with his neighbor's wife; ^(IP)another lewdly defiles his daughter-in-law; ^(IQ)another in you violates his sister, his father's daughter. ¹² In you ^(IR)they take bribes to shed blood; ^(IS)you take interest and profit^[u] and make gain of your neighbors by extortion; but ^(IT)me you have forgotten, declares the Lord God.

¹³ “Behold, ^(IU)I strike my hand at ^(IV)the dishonest gain that you have made, and at ^(IW)the blood that has been in your midst. ^14 (IX)Can your courage endure, or can your hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with you? ^(IY)I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it. ^15 (IZ)I will scatter you among the nations and disperse you through the countries, and ^(JA)I will consume your uncleanness out of you. ¹⁶ And ^(JB)you shall be profaned by your own doing ^(JC)in the sight of the nations, ^(JD)and you shall know that I am the Lord.”

¹⁷ And the word of the Lord came to me: ^18 (JE)“Son of man, the house of Israel has become ^(JF)dross to me; all of them are ^(JG)bronze and tin and iron and lead in the furnace; they are ^(JH)dross of silver. ¹⁹ Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you have all become dross, therefore, behold, I will gather you into the midst of Jerusalem. ²⁰ As one gathers silver and bronze and iron and lead and tin into a furnace, ^(JI)to blow the fire on it in order to melt it, so I will gather you ^(JJ)in my anger and in my wrath, and I will put you in and melt you. ²¹ I will gather you and blow on you with the fire of my wrath, and you shall be melted in the midst of it. ²² As silver is melted in a furnace, so you shall be melted in the midst of it, and you shall know that I am the Lord; ^(JK)I have poured out my wrath upon you.”

²³ And the word of the Lord came to me: ²⁴ “Son of man, say to her, You are a land that is ^(JL)not cleansed ^(JM)or rained upon in the day of indignation. ^25 (JN)The conspiracy of her prophets in her midst is ^(JO)like a roaring lion ^(JP)tearing the prey; they have devoured human lives; they have taken treasure and precious things; they have made many widows in her midst. ^26 (JQ)Her priests ^(JR)have done violence to my law and ^(JS)have profaned my holy things. ^(JT)They have made no distinction between the holy and the common, neither have they taught the difference between the unclean and the clean, and ^(JU)they have disregarded my Sabbaths, ^(JV)so that I am profaned among them. ^27 (JW)Her princes in her midst are like wolves ^(JX)tearing the prey, ^(JY)shedding blood, destroying lives to get dishonest gain. ²⁸ And ^(JZ)her prophets have smeared whitewash for them, ^(KA)seeing false visions and divining lies for them, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord God,’ when the Lord has not spoken. ²⁹ The people of the land ^(KB)have practiced extortion and committed robbery. They have oppressed the poor and needy, and ^(KC)have extorted from the sojourner without justice. ^30 (KD)And I sought for a man among them ^(KE)who should build up the wall ^(KF)and stand in the breach before me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none. ³¹ Therefore ^(KG)I have poured out my indignation upon them. I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath. I have returned ^(KH)their way upon their heads, declares the Lord God.”

Oholah and Oholibah

23 The word of the Lord came to me: ^2 (KI)“Son of man, there were ^(KJ)two women, the daughters of one mother. ^3 (KK)They played the whore in Egypt; ^(KL)they played the whore ^(KM)in their youth; there their breasts were pressed and their virgin bosoms^[v] handled. ⁴ Oholah was the name of the elder and Oholibah the name of her sister. ^(KN)They became mine, and they ^(KO)bore sons and daughters. As for their names, Oholah is ^(KP)Samaria, and Oholibah is Jerusalem.

⁵ “Oholah played the whore ^(KQ)while she was mine, and ^(KR)she lusted after her lovers ^(KS)the Assyrians, warriors ⁶ clothed in purple, ^(KT)governors and commanders, ^(KU)all of them desirable young men, ^(KV)horsemen riding on horses. ⁷ She bestowed her whoring upon them, the choicest men of Assyria all of them, and she defiled herself with all the idols of everyone after whom she lusted. ⁸ She did not give up her whoring ^(KW)that she had begun in Egypt; for in her youth men had lain with her and handled her virgin bosom and poured out their whoring lust upon her. ⁹ Therefore ^(KX)I delivered her into the hands of her lovers, into the hands of the Assyrians, after whom she lusted. ^10 (KY)These uncovered her nakedness; ^(KZ)they seized her sons and her daughters; and as for her, they killed her with the sword; and she became ^(LA)a byword among women, ^(LB)when judgment had been executed on her.

^11 (LC)“Her sister Oholibah saw this, and she became ^(LD)more corrupt than her sister^[w] in her lust and in her whoring, which was worse than that of her sister. ¹² She lusted after the Assyrians, governors and commanders, warriors clothed in full armor, horsemen riding on horses, ^(LE)all of them desirable young men. ¹³ And I saw that she was defiled; they both took the same way. ¹⁴ But she carried her whoring further. She saw men ^(LF)portrayed on the wall, the ^(LG)images of ^(LH)the Chaldeans portrayed in vermilion, ¹⁵ wearing belts on their waists, with flowing turbans on their heads, all of them having the appearance of officers, a likeness of Babylonians whose native land was Chaldea. ¹⁶ When she saw them, she lusted after them and ^(LI)sent messengers to them ^(LJ)in Chaldea. ¹⁷ And the Babylonians came to her ^(LK)into the bed of love, and they defiled her with their whoring lust. And after she was defiled by them, ^(LL)she turned from them in disgust. ¹⁸ When she carried on her whoring so openly and flaunted her nakedness, I turned in disgust from her, as I had turned in disgust from her sister. ¹⁹ Yet she increased her whoring, ^(LM)remembering the days of her youth, when she played the whore in the land of Egypt ²⁰ and lusted after her lovers there, whose members were like those of donkeys, and whose issue was like that of horses. ²¹ Thus you longed for the lewdness of your youth, when the Egyptians handled your bosom and pressed^[x] your young breasts.”

²² Therefore, O Oholibah, thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I will stir up against you your lovers ^(LN)from whom you turned in disgust, ^(LO)and I will bring them against you from every side: ²³ the Babylonians and all the Chaldeans, ^(LP)Pekod and Shoa and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them, ^(LQ)desirable young men, ^(LR)governors and commanders all of them, officers and men of renown, all of them riding on horses. ²⁴ And they shall come against you from the north^[y] with chariots and wagons and a host of peoples. ^(LS)They shall set themselves against you on every side with buckler, shield, and helmet; and ^(LT)I will commit the judgment to them, and ^(LU)they shall judge you according to their judgments. ²⁵ And I will direct my jealousy against you, ^(LV)that they may deal with you in fury. They shall cut off your nose and your ears, and your survivors shall fall by the sword. ^(LW)They shall seize your sons and your daughters, and your survivors shall be devoured by fire. ^26 (LX)They shall also strip you of your clothes and take away your beautiful jewels. ^27 (LY)Thus I will put an end to your lewdness and ^(LZ)your whoring begun in the land of Egypt, so that you shall not lift up your eyes to them or remember Egypt anymore.

²⁸ “For thus says the Lord God: ^(MA)Behold, I will deliver you into the hands of those whom you hate, ^(MB)into the hands of those from whom you turned in disgust, ²⁹ and ^(MC)they shall deal with you in hatred and take away all the fruit of your labor ^(MD)and leave you naked and bare, and ^(ME)the nakedness of your whoring shall be uncovered. Your lewdness and your whoring ³⁰ have brought this upon you, because ^(MF)you played the whore with the nations and defiled yourself with their idols. ³¹ You have gone the way of your sister; ^(MG)therefore I will give ^(MH)her cup into your hand. ³² Thus says the Lord God:

for I have spoken, declares the Lord God. ³⁵ Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because ^(MM)you have forgotten me and ^(MN)cast me behind your back, you yourself ^(MO)must bear the consequences of your lewdness and whoring.”

³⁶ The Lord said to me: ^(MP)“Son of man, ^(MQ)will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Declare to them their abominations. ³⁷ For ^(MR)they have committed adultery, ^(MS)and blood is on their hands. With their idols they have committed adultery, and they have even ^(MT)offered up^[z] to them for food the children whom they had borne to me.
