The One Who Sins Will Die

18 The word of the Lord came to me: ²“What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel:

“‘The parents eat sour grapes,
and the children’s teeth are set on edge’?^(A)

³“As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, you will no longer quote this proverb^(B) in Israel. ⁴For everyone belongs to me, the parent as well as the child—both alike belong to me. The one who sins^(C) is the one who will die.^(D)

⁵“Suppose there is a righteous man
    who does what is just and right.
⁶He does not eat at the mountain^(E) shrines
    or look to the idols^(F) of Israel.
He does not defile his neighbor’s wife
    or have sexual relations with a woman during her period.^(G)
⁷He does not oppress^(H) anyone,
    but returns what he took in pledge^(I) for a loan.
He does not commit robbery^(J)
    but gives his food to the hungry^(K)
    and provides clothing for the naked.^(L)
⁸He does not lend to them at interest
    or take a profit from them.^(M)
He withholds his hand from doing wrong
    and judges fairly^(N) between two parties.
⁹He follows my decrees^(O)
    and faithfully keeps my laws.
That man is righteous;^(P)
    he will surely live,^(Q)
declares the Sovereign Lord.

¹⁰“Suppose he has a violent son, who sheds blood^(R) or does any of these other things^[a] ¹¹(though the father has done none of them):

“He eats at the mountain shrines.^(S)
He defiles his neighbor’s wife.
¹²He oppresses the poor^(T) and needy.
He commits robbery.
He does not return what he took in pledge.^(U)
He looks to the idols.
He does detestable things.^(V)
¹³He lends at interest and takes a profit.^(W)

Will such a man live? He will not! Because he has done all these detestable things, he is to be put to death; his blood will be on his own head.^(X)

¹⁴“But suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father commits, and though he sees them, he does not do such things:^(Y)

¹⁵“He does not eat at the mountain shrines^(Z)
    or look to the idols^(AA) of Israel.
He does not defile his neighbor’s wife.
¹⁶He does not oppress anyone
    or require a pledge for a loan.
He does not commit robbery
    but gives his food to the hungry^(AB)
    and provides clothing for the naked.^(AC)
¹⁷He withholds his hand from mistreating the poor
    and takes no interest or profit from them.
He keeps my laws^(AD) and follows my decrees.

He will not die for his father’s sin; he will surely live. ¹⁸But his father will die for his own sin, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother and did what was wrong among his people.

¹⁹“Yet you ask, ‘Why does the son not share the guilt of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right and has been careful to keep all my decrees, he will surely live.^(AE) ²⁰The one who sins is the one who will die.^(AF) The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.^(AG)

²¹“But if^(AH) a wicked person turns away from all the sins they have committed and keeps all my decrees^(AI) and does what is just and right, that person will surely live; they will not die.^(AJ) ²²None of the offenses they have committed will be remembered against them. Because of the righteous things they have done, they will live.^(AK) ²³Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign Lord. Rather, am I not pleased^(AL) when they turn from their ways and live?^(AM)

²⁴“But if a righteous person turns^(AN) from their righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked person does, will they live? None of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness^(AO) they are guilty of and because of the sins they have committed, they will die.^(AP)

²⁵“Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’^(AQ) Hear, you Israelites: Is my way unjust?^(AR) Is it not your ways that are unjust? ²⁶If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin, they will die for it; because of the sin they have committed they will die. ²⁷But if a wicked person turns away from the wickedness they have committed and does what is just and right, they will save their life.^(AS) ²⁸Because they consider all the offenses they have committed and turn away from them, that person will surely live; they will not die.^(AT) ²⁹Yet the Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are my ways unjust, people of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust?

³⁰“Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent!^(AU) Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall.^(AV) ³¹Rid^(AW) yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart^(AX) and a new spirit. Why^(AY) will you die, people of Israel?^(AZ) ³²For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent^(BA) and live!^(BB)

The Lord Will Be Israel’s Shepherd

34 The word of the Lord came to me: ²“Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Woe to you shepherds of Israel who only take care of yourselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock?^(A) ³You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock.^(B) ⁴You have not strengthened the weak or healed^(C) the sick or bound up^(D) the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally.^(E) ⁵So they were scattered because there was no shepherd,^(F) and when they were scattered they became food for all the wild animals.^(G) ⁶My sheep wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill.^(H) They were scattered^(I) over the whole earth, and no one searched or looked for them.^(J)

⁷“‘Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: ⁸As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, because my flock lacks a shepherd and so has been plundered^(K) and has become food for all the wild animals,^(L) and because my shepherds did not search for my flock but cared for themselves rather than for my flock,^(M) ⁹therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: ¹⁰This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against^(N) the shepherds and will hold them accountable for my flock. I will remove them from tending the flock so that the shepherds can no longer feed themselves. I will rescue^(O) my flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be food for them.^(P)

¹¹“‘For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep^(Q) and look after them. ¹²As a shepherd^(R) looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness.^(S) ¹³I will bring them out from the nations and gather^(T) them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land.^(U) I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the settlements in the land.^(V) ¹⁴I will tend them in a good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel^(W) will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in good grazing land, and there they will feed in a rich pasture^(X) on the mountains of Israel.^(Y) ¹⁵I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down,^(Z) declares the Sovereign Lord.^(AA) ¹⁶I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up^(AB) the injured and strengthen the weak,^(AC) but the sleek and the strong I will destroy.^(AD) I will shepherd the flock with justice.^(AE)

¹⁷“‘As for you, my flock, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will judge between one sheep and another, and between rams and goats.^(AF) ¹⁸Is it not enough^(AG) for you to feed on the good pasture? Must you also trample the rest of your pasture with your feet?^(AH) Is it not enough for you to drink clear water? Must you also muddy the rest with your feet? ¹⁹Must my flock feed on what you have trampled and drink what you have muddied with your feet?

²⁰“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says to them: See, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep.^(AI) ²¹Because you shove with flank and shoulder, butting all the weak sheep with your horns^(AJ) until you have driven them away, ²²I will save my flock, and they will no longer be plundered. I will judge between one sheep and another.^(AK) ²³I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend^(AL) them; he will tend them and be their shepherd.^(AM) ²⁴I the Lord will be their God,^(AN) and my servant David^(AO) will be prince among them.^(AP) I the Lord have spoken.^(AQ)

²⁵“‘I will make a covenant^(AR) of peace^(AS) with them and rid the land of savage beasts^(AT) so that they may live in the wilderness and sleep in the forests in safety.^(AU) ²⁶I will make them and the places surrounding my hill a blessing.^[a]^(AV) I will send down showers in season;^(AW) there will be showers of blessing.^(AX) ²⁷The trees will yield their fruit^(AY) and the ground will yield its crops;^(AZ) the people will be secure^(BA) in their land. They will know that I am the Lord, when I break the bars of their yoke^(BB) and rescue them from the hands of those who enslaved them.^(BC) ²⁸They will no longer be plundered by the nations, nor will wild animals devour them. They will live in safety,^(BD) and no one will make them afraid.^(BE) ²⁹I will provide for them a land renowned^(BF) for its crops, and they will no longer be victims of famine^(BG) in the land or bear the scorn^(BH) of the nations.^(BI) ³⁰Then they will know that I, the Lord their God, am with them and that they, the Israelites, are my people, declares the Sovereign Lord.^(BJ) ³¹You are my sheep,^(BK) the sheep of my pasture,^(BL) and I am your God, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”
