Judgment on Evil Counselors

11 Moreover, the (A)Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the east gate of the house of Yahweh which faced eastward. And behold, at the entrance of the gate, there were twenty-five men, and I saw among them Jaazaniah son of Azzur and (B)Pelatiah son of Benaiah, officials of the people. He said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who devise wickedness and (C)give evil counsel in this city, who say, ‘The time is not near to build houses. [a]This (D)city is the pot, and we are the flesh.’ Therefore, (E)prophesy against them, son of man, prophesy!”

Then the Spirit of Yahweh fell upon me, and He said to me, “Say, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “So you say, house of Israel, for (F)I know what comes up in your (G)spirit. You have (H)multiplied your slain in this city, and you have filled its streets with [b]them.” Therefore, thus says Lord Yahweh, “Your (I)slain whom you have laid in the midst of [c]the city are the flesh, and this city is the pot; but [d]I will (J)bring you out of it. You have (K)feared a sword; so a sword I will (L)bring upon you,” Lord Yahweh declares. “And I will bring you out of the midst of [e]the city and give you into the hands of (M)strangers and (N)execute judgments against you. 10 You will (O)fall by the sword. I will judge you to the (P)border of Israel; so you shall know that I am Yahweh. 11 This city will (Q)not be a pot for you, nor will you be flesh in the midst of it, but I will judge you to the border of Israel. 12 Thus you will know that I am Yahweh; for you have not walked in My statutes, nor have you (R)executed My judgments, but have executed according to the judgments of the (S)nations around you.”’”

13 Now it happened as I prophesied, that (T)Pelatiah son of Benaiah died. Then I fell on my face and cried out with a loud voice and said, “(U)Alas, Lord Yahweh! Will You bring the remnant of Israel to complete destruction?”

Warning of Judgment

11 Then the Spirit[a] lifted me up and brought me to the east gate of the temple of the Lord, which faces east. There, at the entrance to the gateway, were twenty-five men, and among them I saw Ja’azaniah son of Azzur and Pelatiah son of Benaiah, leaders of the people. He said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who are plotting evil and giving wicked advice in this city, who are saying, ‘We will not have to build houses anytime soon.[b] The city is the pot, and we are the meat.’ Therefore, prophesy against them. Prophesy, son of man.”

Then the Spirit of the Lord fell upon me, and he told me to say this.

This is what the Lord says. This is what you are saying, house of Israel. I know what you have in mind. You have killed many people in this city and filled its streets with the slain. Therefore, this is what the Lord God says. Your slain, which you have placed within the city, are the meat, and the city is the pot. But I will drive you out of it. The sword is what you have feared, and I will bring the sword upon you, declares the Lord God. I[c] will drive you out from it, hand you over to foreigners, and execute judgments on you. 10 By the sword you will fall, and at the border of Israel I will judge you. Then you will know that I am the Lord. 11 This city will not be a pot for you, and you will not be the meat inside it. At the border of Israel I will judge you. 12 Then you will know that I am the Lord, in whose statutes you have not walked and whose ordinances you have not obeyed, but instead you have acted according to the ordinances of the nations around you.

13 While I was prophesying, Pelatiah son of Benaiah died. Then I fell facedown and cried out in a loud voice. I said, “Oh no, Lord God, you are making a complete destruction of the remaining survivors of Israel!”

  1. Ezekiel 11:1 Or wind
  2. Ezekiel 11:3 The Hebrew sentence reads to build houses is not near. The context requires a confident assertion, but it is not clear what type of action this comment refers to. Some suggest that the rulers feel no need to build houses because they have expropriated the property of the people in exile and of other defenseless residents of the city. Others suggest that they were mocking Jeremiah’s letter and talking about building houses in Babylon.
  3. Ezekiel 11:9 A variant supported by some Hebrew manuscripts is he.
