Prophecies Against Evil Leaders
11 ·The Spirit [or A spirit/or wind] lifted me up and brought me to the ·front [L eastern] gate of the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord, which faces east. ·I saw [T And behold] twenty-five men at the entrance of the gate, among them Jaazaniah son of Azzur and Pelatiah son of Benaiah, who were ·leaders [princes; officials] of the people. 2 Then the Lord said to me, “·Human [T Son of man; 2:1], these are the men who plan evil and give wicked advice in this city [C Jerusalem]. 3 They say, ‘·It is almost time [or Isn’t it a good time…?; or The time is not near] for us to build houses [C meaning either (1) let’s keep building, since no judgment is coming, or (2) we don’t need to build our own houses, since we can seize the houses of others (Mic. 2:1–2)]. This city is ·like a cooking pot [the cauldron], and we are ·like the best meat [L the meat; C the city will protect them; see 24:3–11 for the same image used differently].’ 4 So prophesy against them, prophesy, ·human [T son of man; 2:1].”
5 Then the ·Spirit [or spirit] of the Lord ·entered [fell upon] me and told me to say: “This is what the Lord says: You have said these things, ·people [L house] of Israel, and I know ·what you are thinking [L the steps of your spirits]. 6 You have killed many people in this city, filling its streets with ·their bodies [the slain].
7 “So this is what the Lord God says: Those people you have killed and left in the middle of the city are ·like the best meat [L the meat], and this city is ·like the cooking pot [L the cauldron]. But I will ·force [drive; take] you out of the city. 8 You have feared the sword, ·but [so] I will bring a sword against you, says the Lord God. 9 I will ·force [drive; take] you out of the city and hand you over to ·strangers [foreigners] and ·punish [execute judgments upon] you. 10 You will die by the sword. I will ·punish [judge] you at the border of Israel so you will know that I am the Lord. 11 This city will not be ·your cooking pot [the cauldron], and you will not be ·the best meat [L meat] in the middle of it. I will ·punish [judge] you at the border of Israel. 12 Then you will know that I am the Lord. You did not live by my ·rules [statutes] or obey my ·laws [rules; judgments]. Instead, you ·did the same things as [obeyed the laws/rules/judgments of] the nations around you.”
13 While I was prophesying, Pelatiah son of Benaiah died. Then I ·bowed [fell] facedown on the ground and ·shouted [cried out] with a loud voice, “·Oh no [Ah], Lord God! Will you completely destroy the ·Israelites who are left alive [remnant of Israel]?”
Promise to Those Remaining
14 The ·Lord spoke his word [L word of the Lord came] to me, saying, 15 “·Human [T Son of man; 2:1], the people still in Jerusalem have spoken about your ·own relatives[a] [L brothers, your kinsmen redeemers; Lev. 25:25–55] and all the ·people [L house] of Israel, saying, ‘They are far from the Lord. This land has been given to us as our ·property [possession].’
16 “So say, ‘This is what the Lord God says: I sent the people far away among the nations and scattered them among the countries. But ·for a little while [or in a small measure] I have become a ·Temple [sanctuary] to them in the countries where they have gone.’
17 “So say: ‘This is what the Lord God says: I will gather you from the nations and bring you together from the countries where you have been scattered. Then I will give you back the land of Israel.’
18 “When they come to this land, they will remove all the ·evil idols [detestable things] and all the ·hateful images [abominations]. 19 I will give them ·a desire to respect me completely [a unified heart; L one heart], and ·I will put inside them a new way of thinking [L a new spirit]. I will take away their ·stubborn heart [L heart of stone], and I will give them an ·obedient heart [or tender heart; L heart of flesh]. 20 Then they will ·live by my rules [walk in my statutes/decrees] and obey my ·laws [rules; judgments] and keep them. They will be my people, and I will be their God. 21 But those who ·want to serve [are devoted to; pursue] their ·evil statues [detestable things] and ·hateful idols [abominations], I will ·pay back for their evil ways [L bring their way/path down upon their head], says the Lord God.”
Ezekiel’s Vision Ends
22 Then the ·living creatures [L cherubim] lifted their wings with the wheels beside them, and the glory of the God of Israel [C his manifest presence] was above them. 23 The glory of the Lord went up from inside Jerusalem and stopped on the mountain on the east side of the city. 24 ·The Spirit [or A wind/or spirit] lifted me up and brought me to the ·captives [exiles] who had been taken from Judah to ·Babylonia [L Chaldea]. This happened in a vision given by the ·Spirit [spirit] of God, and then the vision I had seen ·ended [L went up from me]. 25 And I told the ·captives [exiles] from Judah all the things the Lord had shown me.

Judgment on Wicked Counselors
11 Then (A)the Spirit lifted me up and brought me to (B)the East Gate of the Lord’s house, which faces eastward; and there (C)at the door of the gate were twenty-five men, among whom I saw Jaazaniah the son of Azzur, and Pelatiah the son of Benaiah, princes of the people. 2 And He said to me: “Son of man, these are the men who devise iniquity and give wicked [a]counsel in this city, 3 who say, ‘The time is not (D)near to build houses; (E)this city is the [b]caldron, and we are the meat.’ 4 Therefore prophesy against them, prophesy, O son of man!”
5 Then (F)the Spirit of the Lord fell upon me, and said to me, “Speak! ‘Thus says the Lord: “Thus you have said, O house of Israel; for (G)I know the things that come into your mind. 6 (H)You have multiplied your slain in this city, and you have filled its streets with the slain.” 7 Therefore thus says the Lord God: (I)“Your slain whom you have laid in its midst, they are the meat, and this city is the caldron; (J)but I shall bring you out of the midst of it. 8 You have (K)feared the sword; and I will bring a sword upon you,” says the Lord God. 9 “And I will bring you out of its midst, and deliver you into the hands of strangers, and (L)execute judgments on you. 10 (M)You shall fall by the sword. I will judge you at (N)the border of Israel. (O)Then you shall know that I am the Lord. 11 (P)This city shall not be your [c]caldron, nor shall you be the meat in its midst. I will judge you at the border of Israel. 12 And you shall know that I am the Lord; for you have not walked in My statutes nor executed My judgments, but (Q)have done according to the customs of the Gentiles which are all around you.” ’ ”
13 Now it happened, while I was prophesying, that (R)Pelatiah the son of Benaiah died. Then (S)I fell on my face and cried with a loud voice, and said, “Ah, Lord God! Will You make a complete end of the remnant of Israel?”
God Will Restore Israel
14 Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 15 “Son of man, your brethren, your relatives, your countrymen, and all the house of Israel in its entirety, are those about whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, ‘Get far away from the Lord; this land has been given to us as a possession.’ 16 Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Although I have cast them far off among the Gentiles, and although I have scattered them among the countries, (T)yet I shall be a little [d]sanctuary for them in the countries where they have gone.” ’ 17 Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: (U)“I will gather you from the peoples, assemble you from the countries where you have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.” ’ 18 And they will go there, and they will take away all its (V)detestable things and all its abominations from there. 19 Then (W)I will give them one heart, and I will put (X)a new spirit within [e]them, and take (Y)the stony heart out of their flesh, and give them a heart of flesh, 20 (Z)that they may walk in My statutes and keep My judgments and do them; (AA)and they shall be My people, and I will be their God. 21 But as for those whose hearts follow the desire for their detestable things and their abominations, (AB)I will recompense their deeds on their own heads,” says the Lord God.
22 So the cherubim (AC)lifted up their wings, with the wheels beside them, and the glory of the God of Israel was high above them. 23 And (AD)the glory of the Lord went up from the midst of the city and stood (AE)on the mountain, (AF)which is on the east side of the city.
24 Then (AG)the Spirit took me up and brought me in a vision by the Spirit of God into [f]Chaldea, to those in captivity. And the vision that I had seen went up from me. 25 So I spoke to those in captivity of all the things the Lord had shown me.

Israël zal weer worden verzameld uit de landen
11 Toen tilde de Geest mij op en bracht mij naar de oostelijke tempelpoort. Daar zag ik vijfentwintig van de meest vooraanstaande mannen uit de stad. Onder hen waren ook de volksleiders Jaäzanja, de zoon van Azzur, en Pelatja, de zoon van Benaja. 2 De Geest zei tegen mij: ‘Mensenzoon, dit zijn de mannen die voortdurend onheil stichten en de stad vergiftigen met hun goddeloze adviezen. 3 Want zij zeggen tegen de mensen: “Dit is het moment om Jeruzalem weer op te bouwen, want onze stad is als een ijzeren schild dat ons tegen alle gevaar zal beschermen.” 4 Profeteer daarom luid en duidelijk tegen hen, mensenzoon.’
5 Toen kwam de Geest van de Here over mij en droeg mij op te zeggen: ‘De Here zegt tegen alle inwoners van Israël: “Ik weet wat u zegt. Ik ken immers al uw gedachten, elk denkbeeld dat in u leeft. 6 U hebt eindeloos gemoord en uw straten met lijken gevuld.” 7 Daarom zegt de Oppermachtige Here: “Denkt u dat deze stad een ijzeren schild is? Nou, dat is zij niet! Zij zal u niet kunnen beschermen. Uw slachtoffers zullen overal in de stad liggen, maar u zult naar buiten worden gesleept en worden terechtgesteld. 8 Ik zal u blootstellen aan de oorlog die u zo lang hebt gevreesd,” zegt de Oppermachtige Here. 9 “Ik zal u uit Jeruzalem weghalen en overleveren aan buitenlanders, die mijn vonnis over u zullen voltrekken. 10 Overal in het land Israël zult u door het zwaard worden gedood. 11 Nee, deze stad zal geen ijzeren schild voor u zijn waarachter u veilig bent. Ik zal u tot aan de grenzen van Israël achtervolgen en u zult weten dat Ik de Here ben, 12 u die Mij niet hebt gehoorzaamd, maar liever het voorbeeld van de volken rondom u volgde.”’
13 Terwijl ik nog bezig was hun dit alles te vertellen, stierf Pelatja, de zoon van Benaja, plotseling. Ik liet mij met mijn gezicht naar beneden op de grond vallen en riep: ‘Och Here God, wilt U ieder die nog over is in Israël, gaan doden?’
14 Opnieuw kwam er een boodschap van de Here: 15 ‘Mensenzoon, het restant van het volk dat in Jeruzalem is achtergebleven, zegt over uw medeballingen: “De Here heeft hen vanwege hun goddeloosheid gestraft en verbannen. En nu heeft Hij ons hun land gegeven!” 16 Maar vertel de ballingen dat de Oppermachtige Here zegt: “Ook al heb Ik u verspreid over alle landen van de wereld, toch zal Ik een heiligdom voor u zijn gedurende uw verblijf in die landen. 17 Ik zal u weer verzamelen uit de landen waarover u bent verspreid en u het land Israël teruggeven. 18 En als u vandaar bent teruggekeerd, zult u elk spoor van de afgodenverering verwijderen.
19 Ik zal u een ander hart geven en een nieuwe geest, uw harten van steen zal Ik vervangen door tedere harten van liefde, 20 zodat u mijn wetten zult gehoorzamen en mijn volk zult zijn en dan zal Ik ook uw God zijn. 21 Maar wat betreft degenen die in Jeruzalem zijn achtergebleven en met hart en ziel hun afgoden dienen, hun zal Ik al hun zonden betaald zetten,” zegt de Oppermachtige Here.’
22 Toen sloegen de cherubs hun vleugels uit en stegen op in de lucht met hun wielen naast zich. De heerlijkheid van de God van Israël bevond zich boven hen. 23 En de heerlijkheid van de Here steeg op uit de stad en begaf zich boven de berg aan de oostkant. 24 Daarna bracht de Geest van God mij terug naar Babel, naar de Joden die daar in ballingschap waren. En zo eindigde mijn visioen waarin ik Jeruzalem bezocht. 25 Ik vertelde de ballingen alles wat de Here mij in dit visioen had laten zien.
