以西结的异象
1 第三十年四月五日，我正在迦巴鲁河畔被掳的人当中，忽然天开了，我看见了上帝的异象。 2 那是约雅斤王被掳第五年的四月五日， 3 就在迦勒底人境内的迦巴鲁河畔，耶和华的话特别传给了布西的儿子以西结祭司，耶和华的能力[a]降在他身上。
4 在异象中，我看见一阵狂风从北方刮来，随后有一大朵云闪耀着火光，四周环绕着灿烂的光芒，火的中心像发光的金属。 5 火中有四个像人形的活物， 6 每个活物有四张不同的面孔和四个翅膀。 7 他们的腿是直的，脚如同牛犊的蹄，都亮如磨光的铜。 8 四面的翅膀下都有人的手，四个活物都有脸和翅膀， 9 翅膀彼此相连。他们移动时不必转身，各朝前面移动。 10 四个活物的面孔是这样的：正面是人的脸，右面是狮子的脸，左面是牛的脸，后面是鹰的脸。 11 他们的翅膀向上展开，每个活物的一对翅膀与其他活物的翅膀相连，另外一对翅膀遮蔽身体。 12 耶和华的灵往哪里去，他们也往哪里去，移动时不用转身。 13 四个活物的形象如燃烧的火炭，又像火把。活物之间有火上下移动，发出耀眼的闪电。 14 这些活物像闪电一样往来飞驰。
15 当我观看这些活物的时候，发现每个活物旁边的地上都有一个轮子。 16 四个轮子的形状和结构都一样，好像轮套轮，如同闪耀的绿宝石。 17 他们可以向四面移动，移动时轮子不必转向。 18 轮圈高而可畏，周围布满了眼睛。 19 活物行走，轮子也在旁边行走；活物上升，轮子也上升。 20 灵往哪里去，活物也往哪里去，轮子也跟着往哪里去，因为活物的灵在轮子里。 21 活物行走，轮子也行走；活物站立不动，轮子也站立不动；活物上升，轮子也跟着上升，因为活物的灵在轮子里。
22 活物的头上好像铺展着茫茫的穹苍，如同顶着耀眼的水晶。 23 穹苍下四个活物伸展翅膀，彼此相对，各用两个翅膀遮蔽身体。 24 他们移动时，翅膀发出的响声如洪涛之声，既像全能者的声音，又像军队的呐喊。活物站住的时候，便将翅膀垂下。 25 他们站立垂下翅膀时，有声音从他们头顶的穹苍之上传来。
26 在他们头顶的穹苍之上仿佛有蓝宝石的宝座，有一位形状像人的高高坐在宝座上。 27 我看到祂的腰部以上好像烧红发亮的金属，好像有火四面环绕。腰部以下如同火焰。祂周围有耀眼的光辉， 28 仿佛雨天云中的彩虹。
这是耶和华荣耀的形象。我一看见，便俯伏在地，随后听见有说话的声音。
以西结蒙召
2 那声音对我说：“人子啊，你站起来，我要对你说话。” 2 正说的时候，耶和华的灵就进入我里面，使我站起来。我听见那声音对我说： 3 “人子啊，我派你去那背叛我的以色列人那里。他们和他们的祖先至今仍背叛我。 4 我派你到那些顽固不化的人那里，向他们宣告，‘主耶和华这样说。’ 5 不管那群叛逆的人听不听，他们都会知道有一位先知在他们当中。 6 人子啊，不要怕他们和他们的话，虽然你周围布满荆棘和毒蝎，也不要害怕。他们是一群叛逆的人，你不要怕他们的话，也不要因为他们的脸色而惊慌。 7 他们是叛逆的，不论他们听不听，你都要把我的话告诉他们。
8 “人子啊，你要听我对你说的话，不要像他们那样叛逆，要张开口吃我赐给你的。” 9 这时我看见一只手向我伸来，手中拿着书卷。 10 那只手把那书卷打开，书卷的两面都写满了哀伤、叹息、悲痛的话。
3 祂对我说：“人子啊，你要把得到的吃下去，要吃下这书卷，然后去向以色列人传讲。” 2 我张开口，祂就给我吃那书卷， 3 对我说：“吃下我赐你的这书卷，让它充满你的肚腹。”我便吃了，书卷在我嘴里甘甜如蜜。
4 祂又对我说：“人子啊，现在你要到以色列人那里，把我的话传给他们。 5 你不是奉命去语言不通的民族那里，而是到以色列人当中。 6 我不是派你到那些语言陌生、难懂、你听不明白的民族中。我若果真派你到他们那里，他们一定会听你的话。 7 然而以色列人却不肯听从你，因为他们顽固不化，不肯听从我。 8 不过，我要使你的脸像他们的脸一样硬，使你的额像他们的额一样硬。 9 我要使你的额比火石更硬，如同金刚石。他们虽然是一群叛逆的人，你不要害怕，也不要因为他们的脸色而惊慌。” 10 祂又说：“人子啊，你要留心听我说的一切话，牢记在心。 11 你要到你那些被掳的同胞那里，不论他们听不听，你都要向他们宣告，‘主耶和华这样说。’”
12 那时，灵把我举起，我听见后面有隆隆的声音说：“耶和华的荣耀在祂的居所当受称颂！” 13 我听见活物的翅膀相碰的声音，以及他们旁边的轮子发出的隆隆声。 14 灵把我举起带走了。我心里苦闷，充满愤怒，耶和华大能的手在我身上。 15 我来到住在提勒·亚毕的被掳的人中，在迦巴鲁河边。我感到无比震惊，在他们中间坐了七天。
告诫以色列人
16 过了七天，耶和华对我说： 17 “人子啊，我立你做以色列人的守望者，你要把我告诫他们的话告诉他们。 18 当我说某个恶人必灭亡时，如果你不告诫他，劝告他痛改前非，挽救他的性命，他必死在自己的罪中，而我要追究你的责任。 19 如果你已经告诫他，他还是不肯离开自己的邪恶和罪行，他必死在罪恶之中，而你必免于罪责。 20 如果一个义人偏离正道、犯罪作恶，我会使他跌倒，他必死亡。如果你不告诫他，他必死在罪恶之中，他以前的义行也不会被记念，而我要追究你的责任。 21 如果你告诫他不要犯罪，他听了你的告诫不再犯罪，他必保住性命，你也必免于罪责。”
22 在那里，耶和华的手按在我身上，对我说：“你起来前往平原，我要在那里对你说话。” 23 我到了平原，看见耶和华的荣耀停在那里，那荣耀和我在迦巴鲁河边所见的一样，我就俯伏在地。 24 这时灵进入我里面，使我站立起来。耶和华对我说：“你要把自己关在房子里。 25 人子啊，他们必把你捆绑起来，使你不能到百姓当中。 26 同时，我要使你的舌头紧贴上膛，使你不能开口责备他们，因为他们是一群叛逆的人。 27 但当我对你说话的时候，我必开启你的口，你要向他们宣告，‘主耶和华这样说。’肯听的就让他听，不肯听的就由他不听，因为他们是一群叛逆的人。”
耶路撒冷被困的预兆
4 “人子啊，你去拿一块砖放在自己面前，把耶路撒冷城画在上面。 2 然后围困这城，建垒筑台，扎营围攻，四面架起撞城锤。 3 拿一个铁盘当作铁墙放在你和城中间。你要面向这城，围困攻击这城。这是给以色列人的一个征兆。
4 “你要向左侧卧，担当以色列人的罪恶。要用你向左侧卧的天数担当以色列人的罪恶。 5 他们犯罪多少年，我要让你侧卧多少天。你要担当以色列人的罪恶三百九十天。 6 然后，你再向右侧卧，担当犹大的罪恶四十天。你侧卧的天数代表他们犯罪的年数。 7 你要面向被围困的耶路撒冷，光着臂膀说预言斥责这城。 8 我要用绳索捆绑你，使你不能侧转，直到你围城的日子期满。
9 “你要拿小麦、大麦、豆、扁豆、小米和粗麦装在器皿中用来为自己做饼，作为你三百九十天侧卧期间的粮食。 10 你每天要按时按量吃二百克， 11 每天要按时按量喝六百毫升水。 12 你要像吃大麦饼一样吃这些饼，要在众人面前用人粪来烤饼。” 13 耶和华说：“我把以色列人驱逐到各国的时候，他们也要这样吃不洁净的食物。”
14 我说：“唉，主耶和华啊！我从来没有玷污过自己，我自幼至今从未吃过自然死去的或被野兽撕碎的动物，不洁净的肉从未入过我的口。” 15 于是祂对我说：“好吧，我容许你用牛粪代替人粪来烤饼。” 16 又说：“人子啊，我要断绝耶路撒冷的粮源，叫他们焦虑地吃限量的饼，恐惧地喝限量的水。 17 他们必缺粮少水，绝望地面面相觑，因自己的罪恶而灭亡。”
5 “人子啊，去拿一把快刀当作剃头刀，剃掉你的头发和胡须，然后用天平把须发平均分成三份。 2 围城期满后，你要把三分之一的须发焚烧在城中，三分之一在城的四周用刀砍断，三分之一要扬在风中吹散，因为我要拔刀追杀他们。 3 你要从须发中取出几缕用衣服包上， 4 再从中取出几根丢在火里焚烧，必有火从这里燃起，蔓延到整个以色列。”
5 主耶和华说：“这就是耶路撒冷！我把她安置在万邦的中央，使列国环绕着她。 6 但她违背我的典章，作恶甚于列邦，触犯我的律例甚于她周围的列国。他们拒绝我的典章，不遵守我的律例。” 7 所以主耶和华说：“你们比周围的国家更混乱不堪，你们没有遵行我的律例，不谨守我的典章，连周围的国家都不如。” 8 因此主耶和华这样说：“看啊，我要对付你们，我必在列国面前审判你们。 9 因为你们一切的恶行，我必向你们施行空前绝后的惩罚。 10 在你们中间，父亲要吃自己的儿子，儿子要吃自己的父亲。我必惩罚你们，把你们余下的人分散到各地各方。” 11 主耶和华说：“因为你们用一切可憎的偶像和恶行玷污我的圣所，我凭我的永恒起誓，我必毫不留情地铲除你们。 12 你们三分之一的人要死于饥荒瘟疫，三分之一的人要死于刀下，我必把其余的三分之一分散到各地各方，并拔刀追杀他们。 13 这样，我对你们的怒气才会发完，我才会息怒。我把烈怒倾倒在你们身上的时候，你们就会知道我耶和华的话是出于痛恨不贞。 14 我必使你们的家园在周围的列国中，在路人眼前成为荒凉之地，使你们饱受羞辱。 15 当我在气愤和烈怒中严厉地审判你们时，你们在各国必受羞辱和嘲讽，成为警戒，下场可怕。这是我耶和华说的。 16 我要向你们射出饥荒的毒箭，破坏和毁灭你们，并且使饥荒越来越严重，断绝你们的粮源。 17 我必让饥荒和猛兽来侵害你们，夺走你们的儿女，使你们饱受瘟疫、暴行和刀剑之灾，这是我耶和华说的。”
责备以色列人拜偶像
6 耶和华对我说： 2 “人子啊，你要面向以色列的山岭说预言，斥责它们， 3 说，‘以色列的山岭啊，要听主耶和华的话。祂对高山、丘陵、山涧、河谷说，我必亲自让刀剑临到你们，我必毁灭你们的神庙， 4 使你们的祭坛荒废，香坛破裂！我必在你们的偶像面前杀戮以色列人， 5 使他们横尸在你们的偶像面前，骸骨散在祭坛的四周。 6 你们的城邑必沦为废墟，神庙沦为荒场，祭坛荒废，偶像被砸碎，香坛被捣毁，一切必化为乌有。 7 被杀的人必横尸你们中间，你们就知道我是耶和华。
8 “‘不过，我必为你们留下一些人，使他们脱离刀剑之灾，四散到各国。 9 他们必在被掳的异地想起我怎样为他们忧伤，因为他们背叛我，心中淫乱，眼中恋慕与偶像苟合。他们必因自己的一切邪恶行为而厌恶自己。 10 这样，他们就知道我是耶和华，我说要降灾祸给他们并非空话。’”
11 主耶和华说：“你要拍手顿足地呼喊，‘唉，以色列人有祸了！’他们的一切邪恶行为必使他们倒在刀剑、饥荒和瘟疫之下。 12 远处的必死于瘟疫，近处的必丧身刀下，其余的必死于饥荒。我必把烈怒倾倒在他们身上。 13 他们必陈尸于祭坛周围的偶像间，就是他们在各高岗上、山顶上、绿树下和茂密的橡树下烧香祭拜偶像的地方，那时他们必知道我是耶和华。 14 我必伸手攻击他们，使他们居住的地方，从旷野到第伯拉他，变得极其荒凉。这样，他们便知道我是耶和华。”
以色列的结局近了
7 耶和华对我说： 2 “人子啊，主耶和华对以色列这样说，‘结局到了，以色列全境的结局到了！ 3 以色列，你的结局到了，我的怒气必倾倒在你身上，我必按你的行为审判你，照你的一切恶行报应你。 4 我必不顾惜你，也不怜悯你，我必按你的恶行报应你。这样，你必知道我是耶和华。’”
5 主耶和华说：“看啊，灾祸来了，一场空前的灾祸来了！ 6 结局到了，结局到了，你的结局到了！ 7 以色列境内的居民啊，恶运降临了！时候已到，日子已近，山上一片恐慌，欢乐荡然无存。 8 我快要向你倾倒我的烈怒，发出我的怒气。我必按你的行为审判你，照你一切的恶行报应你。 9 我必不顾惜你，也不怜悯你，我必按你的恶行报应你。这样，你就知道惩罚你的是我耶和华。
10 “看啊，看啊，日子到了，大祸临头了！杖已经发芽，傲慢已经开花。 11 暴行成了惩罚邪恶的杖，以色列人必没有一个能够存留，他们的财富和尊荣必不复存在。 12 时候到了，日子近了，买主不要欢乐，卖主也不要忧愁，因为烈怒临到了所有的人。 13 即使卖主活着，也无法赎回他所卖的，因为关乎每一个人的异象必然应验，他们因为犯罪一个也不能保存性命。
14 “他们吹响了号角，做好了一切准备，却无人出战，因为我的烈怒临到了所有的人。 15 城外有战祸，城内有饥荒瘟疫；城外的必丧身刀下，城内的必死于饥荒瘟疫。 16 侥幸逃到山上的，都必像谷中哀鸣的鸽子，为自己的罪恶哭泣。 17 他们必吓得两手发软，双腿战抖。 18 他们必身披麻衣，战栗发抖。他们必剃光头发，满面羞愧。 19 他们必把银子抛在街上，视金子为污秽之物。在耶和华发烈怒的日子，金银不能拯救他们，也不能填饱他们的肚腹，满足他们的心，因为金银使他们跌入罪恶中。 20 他们以华美的饰物为骄傲，并用它制造丑恶可憎的神像，因此，我必使这一切变成他们眼中的污秽之物。 21 我必使这一切成为外族人手中的猎物，恶人手中的战利品，被任意糟蹋。 22 我必转脸不看他们，任由外族人亵渎我的殿，强盗必进入殿里大肆亵渎。
23 “你要预备锁链，因为这地方充满了血腥的罪恶，城里充斥着暴行。 24 我必让最凶恶的外族人侵占他们的房屋。我必挫掉强悍之人的傲气，使他们的圣所遭受亵渎。 25 恐怖的日子来临了，他们想寻求平安，却得不到平安。 26 灾祸接踵而至，噩耗不断传来。那时，他们必求问先知，但祭司的教导必消逝，长老们必无计可施。 27 君王必悲哀，首领必惊恐，百姓的手都必颤抖。我必按他们的恶行对付他们，使他们受到应得的审判。这样，他们就知道我是耶和华。”

Ezekiel’s Inaugural Vision
1 In my thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day, while I was among the exiles(A) by the Kebar River,(B) the heavens were opened(C) and I saw visions(D) of God.
2 On the fifth of the month—it was the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin(E)— 3 the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel(F) the priest, the son of Buzi, by the Kebar River in the land of the Babylonians.[a] There the hand of the Lord was on him.(G)
4 I looked, and I saw a windstorm(H) coming out of the north(I)—an immense cloud with flashing lightning and surrounded by brilliant light. The center of the fire looked like glowing metal,(J) 5 and in the fire was what looked like four living creatures.(K) In appearance their form was human,(L) 6 but each of them had four faces(M) and four wings. 7 Their legs were straight; their feet were like those of a calf and gleamed like burnished bronze.(N) 8 Under their wings on their four sides they had human hands.(O) All four of them had faces and wings, 9 and the wings of one touched the wings of another. Each one went straight ahead; they did not turn as they moved.(P)
10 Their faces looked like this: Each of the four had the face of a human being, and on the right side each had the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox; each also had the face of an eagle.(Q) 11 Such were their faces. They each had two wings(R) spreading out upward, each wing touching that of the creature on either side; and each had two other wings covering its body. 12 Each one went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they went.(S) 13 The appearance of the living creatures was like burning coals(T) of fire or like torches. Fire moved back and forth among the creatures; it was bright, and lightning(U) flashed out of it. 14 The creatures sped back and forth like flashes of lightning.(V)
15 As I looked at the living creatures,(W) I saw a wheel(X) on the ground beside each creature with its four faces. 16 This was the appearance and structure of the wheels: They sparkled like topaz,(Y) and all four looked alike. Each appeared to be made like a wheel intersecting a wheel. 17 As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the creatures faced; the wheels did not change direction(Z) as the creatures went. 18 Their rims were high and awesome, and all four rims were full of eyes(AA) all around.
19 When the living creatures moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the living creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose. 20 Wherever the spirit would go, they would go,(AB) and the wheels would rise along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. 21 When the creatures moved, they also moved; when the creatures stood still, they also stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.(AC)
22 Spread out above the heads of the living creatures was what looked something like a vault,(AD) sparkling like crystal, and awesome. 23 Under the vault their wings were stretched out one toward the other, and each had two wings covering its body. 24 When the creatures moved, I heard the sound of their wings, like the roar of rushing(AE) waters, like the voice(AF) of the Almighty,[b] like the tumult of an army.(AG) When they stood still, they lowered their wings.
25 Then there came a voice from above the vault over their heads as they stood with lowered wings. 26 Above the vault over their heads was what looked like a throne(AH) of lapis lazuli,(AI) and high above on the throne was a figure like that of a man.(AJ) 27 I saw that from what appeared to be his waist up he looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire, and that from there down he looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded him.(AK) 28 Like the appearance of a rainbow(AL) in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him.(AM)
This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory(AN) of the Lord. When I saw it, I fell facedown,(AO) and I heard the voice of one speaking.
Ezekiel’s Call to Be a Prophet
2 He said to me, “Son of man,[c](AP) stand(AQ) up on your feet and I will speak to you.(AR)” 2 As he spoke, the Spirit came into me and raised me(AS) to my feet, and I heard him speaking to me.
3 He said: “Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have been in revolt against me to this very day.(AT) 4 The people to whom I am sending you are obstinate and stubborn.(AU) Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says.’(AV) 5 And whether they listen or fail to listen(AW)—for they are a rebellious people(AX)—they will know that a prophet has been among them.(AY) 6 And you, son of man, do not be afraid(AZ) of them or their words. Do not be afraid, though briers and thorns(BA) are all around you and you live among scorpions. Do not be afraid of what they say or be terrified by them, though they are a rebellious people.(BB) 7 You must speak(BC) my words to them, whether they listen or fail to listen, for they are rebellious.(BD) 8 But you, son of man, listen to what I say to you. Do not rebel(BE) like that rebellious people;(BF) open your mouth and eat(BG) what I give you.”
9 Then I looked, and I saw a hand(BH) stretched out to me. In it was a scroll,(BI) 10 which he unrolled before me. On both sides of it were written words of lament and mourning and woe.(BJ)
3 And he said to me, “Son of man, eat what is before you, eat this scroll; then go and speak to the people of Israel.” 2 So I opened my mouth, and he gave me the scroll to eat.
3 Then he said to me, “Son of man, eat this scroll I am giving you and fill your stomach with it.” So I ate(BK) it, and it tasted as sweet as honey(BL) in my mouth.
4 He then said to me: “Son of man, go now to the people of Israel and speak my words to them.(BM) 5 You are not being sent to a people of obscure speech and strange language,(BN) but to the people of Israel— 6 not to many peoples of obscure speech and strange language, whose words you cannot understand. Surely if I had sent you to them, they would have listened to you.(BO) 7 But the people of Israel are not willing to listen(BP) to you because they are not willing to listen to me, for all the Israelites are hardened and obstinate.(BQ) 8 But I will make you as unyielding and hardened as they are.(BR) 9 I will make your forehead(BS) like the hardest stone, harder than flint.(BT) Do not be afraid of them or terrified by them, though they are a rebellious people.(BU)”
10 And he said to me, “Son of man, listen carefully and take to heart(BV) all the words I speak to you. 11 Go(BW) now to your people in exile and speak to them. Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says,’(BX) whether they listen or fail to listen.(BY)”
12 Then the Spirit lifted me up,(BZ) and I heard behind me a loud rumbling sound as the glory of the Lord rose from the place where it was standing.[d] 13 It was the sound of the wings of the living creatures(CA) brushing against each other and the sound of the wheels beside them, a loud rumbling sound.(CB) 14 The Spirit(CC) then lifted me up(CD) and took me away, and I went in bitterness and in the anger of my spirit, with the strong hand of the Lord(CE) on me. 15 I came to the exiles who lived at Tel Aviv near the Kebar River.(CF) And there, where they were living, I sat among them for seven days(CG)—deeply distressed.
Ezekiel’s Task as Watchman
16 At the end of seven days the word of the Lord came to me:(CH) 17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman(CI) for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.(CJ) 18 When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,(CK)’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for[e] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.(CL) 19 But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn(CM) from their wickedness(CN) or from their evil ways, they will die(CO) for their sin; but you will have saved yourself.(CP)
20 “Again, when a righteous person turns(CQ) from their righteousness and does evil, and I put a stumbling block(CR) before them, they will die. Since you did not warn them, they will die for their sin. The righteous things that person did will not be remembered, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.(CS) 21 But if you do warn the righteous person not to sin and they do not sin, they will surely live because they took warning, and you will have saved yourself.(CT)”
22 The hand of the Lord(CU) was on me there, and he said to me, “Get up and go(CV) out to the plain,(CW) and there I will speak to you.” 23 So I got up and went out to the plain. And the glory of the Lord was standing there, like the glory I had seen by the Kebar River,(CX) and I fell facedown.(CY)
24 Then the Spirit came into me and raised me(CZ) to my feet. He spoke to me and said: “Go, shut yourself inside your house.(DA) 25 And you, son of man, they will tie with ropes; you will be bound so that you cannot go out among the people.(DB) 26 I will make your tongue stick to the roof(DC) of your mouth so that you will be silent and unable to rebuke them, for they are a rebellious people.(DD) 27 But when I speak to you, I will open your mouth and you shall say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says.’(DE) Whoever will listen let them listen, and whoever will refuse let them refuse; for they are a rebellious people.(DF)
Siege of Jerusalem Symbolized
4 “Now, son of man, take a block of clay, put it in front of you and draw the city of Jerusalem on it. 2 Then lay siege to it: Erect siege works against it, build a ramp(DG) up to it, set up camps against it and put battering rams around it.(DH) 3 Then take an iron pan,(DI) place it as an iron wall between you and the city and turn your face toward(DJ) it. It will be under siege, and you shall besiege it. This will be a sign(DK) to the people of Israel.(DL)
4 “Then lie on your left side and put the sin of the people of Israel upon yourself.[f] You are to bear their sin for the number of days you lie on your side. 5 I have assigned you the same number of days as the years of their sin. So for 390 days you will bear the sin of the people of Israel.
6 “After you have finished this, lie down again, this time on your right side, and bear the sin(DM) of the people of Judah. I have assigned you 40 days, a day for each year.(DN) 7 Turn your face(DO) toward the siege of Jerusalem and with bared arm prophesy against her. 8 I will tie you up with ropes so that you cannot turn from one side to the other until you have finished the days of your siege.(DP)
9 “Take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and spelt;(DQ) put them in a storage jar and use them to make bread for yourself. You are to eat it during the 390 days you lie on your side. 10 Weigh out twenty shekels[g](DR) of food to eat each day and eat it at set times. 11 Also measure out a sixth of a hin[h] of water and drink it at set times.(DS) 12 Eat the food as you would a loaf of barley bread; bake it in the sight of the people, using human excrement(DT) for fuel.” 13 The Lord said, “In this way the people of Israel will eat defiled food among the nations where I will drive them.”(DU)
14 Then I said, “Not so, Sovereign Lord!(DV) I have never defiled myself. From my youth until now I have never eaten anything found dead(DW) or torn by wild animals. No impure meat has ever entered my mouth.(DX)”
15 “Very well,” he said, “I will let you bake your bread over cow dung instead of human excrement.”
16 He then said to me: “Son of man, I am about to cut off(DY) the food supply in Jerusalem. The people will eat rationed food in anxiety and drink rationed water in despair,(DZ) 17 for food and water will be scarce.(EA) They will be appalled at the sight of each other and will waste away because of[i] their sin.(EB)
God’s Razor of Judgment
5 “Now, son of man, take a sharp sword and use it as a barber’s razor(EC) to shave(ED) your head and your beard.(EE) Then take a set of scales and divide up the hair. 2 When the days of your siege come to an end, burn(EF) a third(EG) of the hair inside the city. Take a third and strike it with the sword all around the city. And scatter a third to the wind.(EH) For I will pursue them with drawn sword.(EI) 3 But take a few hairs and tuck them away in the folds of your garment.(EJ) 4 Again, take a few of these and throw them into the fire(EK) and burn them up. A fire will spread from there to all Israel.
5 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: This is Jerusalem, which I have set in the center of the nations, with countries all around her.(EL) 6 Yet in her wickedness she has rebelled against my laws and decrees more than the nations and countries around her. She has rejected my laws and has not followed my decrees.(EM)
7 “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: You have been more unruly than the nations around you and have not followed my decrees or kept my laws. You have not even[j] conformed to the standards of the nations around you.(EN)
8 “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself am against you, Jerusalem, and I will inflict punishment on you in the sight of the nations.(EO) 9 Because of all your detestable idols, I will do to you what I have never done before and will never do again.(EP) 10 Therefore in your midst parents will eat their children, and children will eat their parents.(EQ) I will inflict punishment on you and will scatter all your survivors to the winds.(ER) 11 Therefore as surely as I live,(ES) declares the Sovereign(ET) Lord, because you have defiled my sanctuary(EU) with all your vile images(EV) and detestable practices,(EW) I myself will shave you; I will not look on you with pity or spare you.(EX) 12 A third of your people will die of the plague or perish by famine inside you; a third will fall by the sword outside your walls; and a third I will scatter to the winds(EY) and pursue with drawn sword.(EZ)
13 “Then my anger will cease and my wrath(FA) against them will subside, and I will be avenged.(FB) And when I have spent my wrath on them, they will know that I the Lord have spoken in my zeal.(FC)
14 “I will make you a ruin and a reproach among the nations around you, in the sight of all who pass by.(FD) 15 You will be a reproach(FE) and a taunt, a warning(FF) and an object of horror to the nations around you when I inflict punishment on you in anger and in wrath and with stinging rebuke.(FG) I the Lord have spoken.(FH) 16 When I shoot at you with my deadly and destructive arrows of famine, I will shoot to destroy you. I will bring more and more famine upon you and cut off your supply of food.(FI) 17 I will send famine and wild beasts(FJ) against you, and they will leave you childless. Plague and bloodshed(FK) will sweep through you, and I will bring the sword against you. I the Lord have spoken.(FL)”
Doom for the Mountains of Israel
6 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, set your face(FM) against the mountains(FN) of Israel; prophesy against them(FO) 3 and say: ‘You mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign Lord. This is what the Sovereign Lord says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys:(FP) I am about to bring a sword against you, and I will destroy your high places.(FQ) 4 Your altars will be demolished and your incense altars(FR) will be smashed; and I will slay your people in front of your idols.(FS) 5 I will lay the dead bodies of the Israelites in front of their idols, and I will scatter your bones(FT) around your altars.(FU) 6 Wherever you live,(FV) the towns will be laid waste and the high places(FW) demolished, so that your altars will be laid waste and devastated, your idols(FX) smashed and ruined, your incense altars(FY) broken down, and what you have made wiped out.(FZ) 7 Your people will fall slain(GA) among you, and you will know that I am the Lord.(GB)
8 “‘But I will spare some, for some of you will escape(GC) the sword when you are scattered among the lands and nations.(GD) 9 Then in the nations where they have been carried captive, those who escape will remember(GE) me—how I have been grieved(GF) by their adulterous hearts, which have turned away from me, and by their eyes, which have lusted after their idols.(GG) They will loathe themselves for the evil(GH) they have done and for all their detestable practices.(GI) 10 And they will know that I am the Lord;(GJ) I did not threaten in vain to bring this calamity on them.(GK)
11 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Strike your hands together and stamp your feet and cry out “Alas!” because of all the wicked and detestable practices of the people of Israel, for they will fall by the sword, famine and plague.(GL) 12 One who is far away will die of the plague, and one who is near will fall by the sword, and anyone who survives and is spared will die of famine. So will I pour out my wrath(GM) on them.(GN) 13 And they will know that I am the Lord, when their people lie slain among their idols(GO) around their altars, on every high hill and on all the mountaintops, under every spreading tree and every leafy oak(GP)—places where they offered fragrant incense to all their idols.(GQ) 14 And I will stretch out my hand(GR) against them and make the land a desolate waste from the desert to Diblah[k]—wherever they live. Then they will know that I am the Lord.(GS)’”
The End Has Come
7 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says to the land of Israel:
“‘The end!(GT) The end has come
upon the four corners(GU) of the land!
3 The end is now upon you,
and I will unleash my anger against you.
I will judge you according to your conduct(GV)
and repay you for all your detestable practices.(GW)
4 I will not look on you with pity;(GX)
I will not spare you.
I will surely repay you for your conduct
and for the detestable practices among you.
“‘Then you will know that I am the Lord.’(GY)
5 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“‘Disaster!(GZ) Unheard-of[l] disaster!
See, it comes!
6 The end(HA) has come!
The end has come!
It has roused itself against you.
See, it comes!
7 Doom has come upon you,
upon you who dwell in the land.
The time has come! The day(HB) is near!(HC)
There is panic, not joy, on the mountains.
8 I am about to pour out my wrath(HD) on you
and spend my anger against you.
I will judge you according to your conduct
and repay you for all your detestable practices.(HE)
9 I will not look on you with pity;
I will not spare you.(HF)
I will repay you for your conduct
and for the detestable practices among you.(HG)
“‘Then you will know that it is I the Lord who strikes you.(HH)
10 “‘See, the day!
See, it comes!
Doom has burst forth,
the rod(HI) has budded,
arrogance has blossomed!
11 Violence(HJ) has arisen,[m]
a rod to punish the wicked.
None of the people will be left,
none of that crowd—
none of their wealth,
nothing of value.(HK)
12 The time has come!
The day has arrived!
Let not the buyer(HL) rejoice
nor the seller grieve,
for my wrath is on the whole crowd.(HM)
13 The seller will not recover
the property that was sold—
as long as both buyer and seller live.
For the vision concerning the whole crowd
will not be reversed.
Because of their sins, not one of them
will preserve their life.(HN)
14 “‘They have blown the trumpet,(HO)
they have made all things ready,
but no one will go into battle,
for my wrath(HP) is on the whole crowd.
15 Outside is the sword;
inside are plague and famine.
Those in the country
will die by the sword;
those in the city
will be devoured by famine and plague.(HQ)
16 The fugitives(HR) who escape
will flee to the mountains.
Like doves(HS) of the valleys,
they will all moan,
each for their own sins.(HT)
17 Every hand will go limp;(HU)
every leg will be wet with urine.(HV)
18 They will put on sackcloth(HW)
and be clothed with terror.(HX)
Every face will be covered with shame,
and every head will be shaved.(HY)
19 “‘They will throw their silver into the streets,(HZ)
and their gold will be treated as a thing unclean.
Their silver and gold
will not be able to deliver them
in the day of the Lord’s wrath.(IA)
It will not satisfy(IB) their hunger
or fill their stomachs,
for it has caused them to stumble(IC) into sin.(ID)
20 They took pride in their beautiful jewelry
and used it to make(IE) their detestable idols.
They made it into vile images;(IF)
therefore I will make it a thing unclean for them.(IG)
21 I will give their wealth as plunder(IH) to foreigners
and as loot to the wicked of the earth,
who will defile it.(II)
22 I will turn my face(IJ) away from the people,
and robbers will desecrate the place I treasure.
They will enter it
and will defile it.(IK)
23 “‘Prepare chains!
For the land is full of bloodshed,(IL)
and the city is full of violence.(IM)
24 I will bring the most wicked of nations
to take possession of their houses.
I will put an end to the pride of the mighty,
and their sanctuaries(IN) will be desecrated.(IO)
25 When terror comes,
they will seek peace in vain.(IP)
26 Calamity upon calamity(IQ) will come,
and rumor upon rumor.
They will go searching for a vision from the prophet,(IR)
priestly instruction in the law will cease,
the counsel of the elders will come to an end.(IS)
27 The king will mourn,
the prince will be clothed with despair,(IT)
and the hands of the people of the land will tremble.
I will deal with them according to their conduct,(IU)
and by their own standards I will judge them.
“‘Then they will know that I am the Lord.(IV)’”
