The Vision of the Chariot
1 In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month, as I was among the exiles by the river Chebar, the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God. 2 On the fifth day of the month (it was the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin), 3 the word of the Lord came to the priest Ezekiel son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and the hand of the Lord was on him there.
4 As I looked, a stormy wind came out of the north: a great cloud with brightness around it and fire flashing forth continually, and in the middle of the fire, something like gleaming amber. 5 In the middle of it was something like four living creatures. This was their appearance: they were of human form. 6 Each had four faces, and each of them had four wings. 7 Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the sole of a calf’s foot; and they sparkled like burnished bronze. 8 Under their wings on their four sides they had human hands. And the four had their faces and their wings thus: 9 their wings touched one another; each of them moved straight ahead, without turning as they moved. 10 As for the appearance of their faces: the four had the face of a human being, the face of a lion on the right side, the face of an ox on the left side, and the face of an eagle; 11 such were their faces. Their wings were spread out above; each creature had two wings, each of which touched the wing of another, while two covered their bodies. 12 Each moved straight ahead; wherever the spirit would go, they went, without turning as they went. 13 In the middle of[a] the living creatures there was something that looked like burning coals of fire, like torches moving to and fro among the living creatures; the fire was bright, and lightning issued from the fire. 14 The living creatures darted to and fro, like a flash of lightning.
15 As I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the earth beside the living creatures, one for each of the four of them.[b] 16 As for the appearance of the wheels and their construction: their appearance was like the gleaming of beryl; and the four had the same form, their construction being something like a wheel within a wheel. 17 When they moved, they moved in any of the four directions without veering as they moved. 18 Their rims were tall and awesome, for the rims of all four were full of eyes all around. 19 When the living creatures moved, the wheels moved beside them; and when the living creatures rose from the earth, the wheels rose. 20 Wherever the spirit would go, they went, and the wheels rose along with them; for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. 21 When they moved, the others moved; when they stopped, the others stopped; and when they rose from the earth, the wheels rose along with them; for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.
22 Over the heads of the living creatures there was something like a dome, shining like crystal,[c] spread out above their heads. 23 Under the dome their wings were stretched out straight, one toward another; and each of the creatures had two wings covering its body. 24 When they moved, I heard the sound of their wings like the sound of mighty waters, like the thunder of the Almighty,[d] a sound of tumult like the sound of an army; when they stopped, they let down their wings. 25 And there came a voice from above the dome over their heads; when they stopped, they let down their wings.
26 And above the dome over their heads there was something like a throne, in appearance like sapphire;[e] and seated above the likeness of a throne was something that seemed like a human form. 27 Upward from what appeared like the loins I saw something like gleaming amber, something that looked like fire enclosed all around; and downward from what looked like the loins I saw something that looked like fire, and there was a splendor all around. 28 Like the bow in a cloud on a rainy day, such was the appearance of the splendor all around. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord.
When I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of someone speaking.

4 Io guardai, ed ecco venire dal settentrione un vento tempestoso, una grossa nuvola con un fuoco folgorante e uno splendore intorno ad essa; nel centro vi era come un bagliore di metallo in mezzo al fuoco. 5 Nel centro appariva la forma di quattro esseri viventi, e questo era l’aspetto loro: avevano aspetto umano. 6 Ognuno di essi aveva quattro facce e quattro ali. 7 I loro piedi erano diritti e la pianta dei loro piedi era come la pianta del piede di un vitello; brillavano come il bagliore del bronzo lucente. 8 Avevano mani d’uomo sotto le ali, ai loro quattro lati; tutti e quattro avevano le loro facce e le loro ali. 9 Le loro ali si univano l’una all’altra; camminando non si voltavano, ognuno camminava diritto davanti a sé. 10 Quanto all’aspetto delle loro facce, essi avevano tutti una faccia d’uomo, tutti e quattro una faccia di leone a destra, tutti e quattro una faccia di bue a sinistra e tutti e quattro una faccia d’aquila. 11 Le loro facce e le loro ali erano separate nella parte superiore; ognuno aveva due ali che si univano a quelle dell’altro e due che coprivano loro il corpo. 12 Camminavano ognuno diritto davanti a sé; andavano dove lo Spirito li faceva andare e, camminando, non si voltavano. 13 L’aspetto di quegli esseri viventi era come di carboni incandescenti, come di fiaccole; quel fuoco circolava in mezzo agli esseri viventi, era un fuoco scintillante, e dal fuoco uscivano dei lampi. 14 Le creature viventi correvano in tutte le direzioni, simili al fulmine.
15 Mentre guardavo gli esseri viventi, ecco una ruota in terra presso ciascuno di essi, verso le loro quattro facce. 16 L’aspetto delle ruote era come il bagliore del crisolito, tutte e quattro si somigliavano; il loro aspetto e la loro struttura erano come se una ruota fosse in mezzo a un’altra ruota. 17 Quando si muovevano, andavano tutte e quattro dal proprio lato e, andando, non si voltavano. 18 I loro cerchi erano alti e imponenti; i cerchi di tutte e quattro erano pieni d’occhi tutto intorno. 19 Quando gli esseri viventi camminavano, le ruote si muovevano accanto a loro; quando gli esseri viventi si alzavano su da terra, si alzavano anche le ruote. 20 Dovunque lo Spirito voleva andare, andavano anch’esse; le ruote si alzavano accanto a quelli, perché lo spirito degli esseri viventi era nelle ruote. 21 Quando quelli camminavano, anche le ruote si muovevano; quando quelli si fermavano, anche queste si fermavano; e quando quelli si alzavano su dalla terra, anche queste si alzavano accanto a essi, perché lo spirito degli esseri viventi era nelle ruote.
22 Sopra le teste degli esseri viventi c’era come una volta di un bagliore come di cristallo di ammirevole splendore, e si estendeva su in alto, sopra le loro teste. 23 Sotto la volta le loro ali erano diritte, l’una verso l’altra; ciascuno ne aveva due che coprivano il corpo. 24 Quando camminavano, io sentivo il rumore delle loro ali, come il rumore delle grandi acque, come la voce dell’Onnipotente: un rumore di gran tumulto, come il rumore di un accampamento; quando si fermavano, abbassavano le loro ali; 25 si udiva un rumore che veniva dall’alto, dalla volta che era sopra le loro teste.
26 Al di sopra della volta che era sopra le loro teste, c’era come una pietra di zaffiro, che pareva un trono; e su questa specie di trono appariva come la figura di un uomo, che vi stava seduto sopra, su in alto. 27 Vidi pure come un bagliore di metallo, come del fuoco, che lo circondava tutto intorno, dalla sembianza dei suoi fianchi in su; e dalla sembianza dei suoi fianchi in giù vidi come del fuoco, come uno splendore tutto attorno a lui. 28 Quale è l’aspetto dell’arco che è nella nuvola in un giorno di pioggia, tale era l’aspetto di quello splendore che lo circondava. Era un’apparizione dell’immagine della gloria del Signore. A quella vista caddi sulla mia faccia e udii la voce di uno che parlava.

1 Und es geschah im dreißigsten Jahr, am fünften Tag des vierten Monats, als ich unter den Weggeführten am Fluss Kebar[a] war, da öffnete sich der Himmel, und ich sah Gesichte[b] Gottes.
2 Am fünften Tag jenes Monats — es war das fünfte Jahr [seit] der Wegführung des Königs Jojachin[c] —
3 da erging das Wort des Herrn ausdrücklich an Hesekiel, den Sohn Busis, den Priester, im Land der Chaldäer am Fluss Kebar; und die Hand des Herrn kam dort über ihn.
4 Und ich schaute, und siehe, ein Sturmwind kam von Norden her, eine große Wolke und loderndes Feuer, von einem Strahlenglanz umgeben; aus seiner Mitte aber glänzte es wie Goldschimmer[d], mitten aus dem Feuer.
5 Und mitten aus diesem [erschien] die Gestalt von vier lebendigen Wesen, und dies war ihr Aussehen: Sie hatten Menschengestalt.
6 Und jedes von ihnen hatte vier Gesichter, und jedes von ihnen hatte vier Flügel.
7 Ihre Füße standen gerade, und ihre Fußsohlen glichen der Fußsohle eines Kalbes, und sie funkelten wie der Schimmer von blankem Erz.
8 Unter ihren Flügeln befanden sich Menschenhände an ihren vier Seiten, und alle vier [Seiten] hatten ihre Gesichter und ihre Flügel.
9 Ihre Flügel waren miteinander verbunden; wenn sie gingen, wandten sie sich nicht um; jedes ging gerade vor sich hin.
10 Ihre Gesichter aber waren so gestaltet: [vorn] das Gesicht eines Menschen; auf der rechten Seite, bei allen vieren, das Gesicht eines Löwen; zur Linken, bei allen vieren, das Gesicht eines Stieres; [hinten] aber hatten alle vier das Gesicht eines Adlers.
11 Ihre Gesichter aber und ihre Flügel waren nach oben ausgebreitet[e]; je zwei [Flügel] waren miteinander verbunden, und zwei bedeckten ihre Leiber.
12 Und jedes ging gerade vor sich hin; wo der Geist hingehen wollte, da gingen sie hin; sie wandten sich nicht um, wenn sie gingen.
13 Und dies war die Gestalt der lebendigen Wesen: Ihr Aussehen war wie brennende Feuerkohlen, wie das Aussehen von Fackeln; und [die Feuerkohle] fuhr zwischen den lebendigen Wesen hin und her; und [das Feuer] hatte einen strahlenden Glanz, und von dem Feuer gingen Blitze aus.
14 Die lebendigen Wesen aber liefen hin und her, sodass es aussah wie Blitze.
15 Als ich nun die lebendigen Wesen betrachtete, siehe, da war je ein Rad auf der Erde neben jedem der lebendigen Wesen, bei ihren vier Gesichtern.
16 Das Aussehen der Räder und ihre Gestaltung war wie der Schimmer eines Chrysoliths, und alle vier hatten die gleiche Gestalt. Sie sahen aber so aus und waren so gemacht, als wäre ein Rad mitten in dem anderen Rad.
17 Wenn sie gingen, so liefen sie nach ihren vier Seiten hin; sie wandten sich nicht um, wenn sie gingen.
18 Und ihre Felgen waren hoch und furchtgebietend; und ihre Felgen waren voller Augen ringsum bei allen vier.
19 Und wenn die lebendigen Wesen gingen, so liefen auch die Räder neben ihnen, und wenn sich die lebendigen Wesen von der Erde erhoben, so erhoben sich auch die Räder.
20 Wo der Geist hingehen wollte, da gingen sie hin, wohin der Geist gehen wollte; und die Räder erhoben sich vereint mit ihnen, denn der Geist des lebendigen Wesens war in den Rädern.
21 Wenn jene gingen, so gingen auch sie, und wenn jene stillstanden, standen auch sie still; und wenn jene sich von der Erde erhoben, so erhoben sich auch die Räder vereint mit ihnen; denn der Geist des lebendigen Wesens war in den Rädern.
22 Und über den Häuptern des lebendigen Wesens befand sich etwas, das einer [Himmels-]Ausdehnung[f] glich, wie der Anblick eines Kristalls, ehrfurchterregend, ausgebreitet oben über ihren Häuptern.
23 Und unter der [Himmels-]Ausdehnung waren ihre Flügel ausgestreckt, einer zum anderen hin: Jedes hatte zwei Flügel, womit sie ihre Leiber auf der einen Seite, und zwei, womit sie sie auf der anderen Seite bedeckten.
24 Und ich hörte das Rauschen ihrer Flügel wie das Rauschen großer Wasser und wie die Stimme des Allmächtigen; wenn sie gingen, so gab es ein Geräusch wie das Getümmel eines Heerlagers; wenn sie aber stillstanden, ließen sie ihre Flügel sinken.
25 Und es kam eine Stimme oben von der [Himmels-]Ausdehnung her, die über ihren Häuptern war; wenn sie stillstanden, ließen sie ihre Flügel sinken.
26 Und oberhalb der [Himmels-]Ausdehnung, die über ihren Häuptern war, war das Gebilde eines Thrones, anzusehen wie ein Saphirstein. Oben auf dem Gebilde des Thrones aber saß eine Gestalt, anzusehen wie ein Mensch.
27 Ich sah auch etwas wie Goldschimmer, wie das Aussehen eines Feuers inwendig ringsum; von der Erscheinung seiner Lenden nach oben hin und von der Erscheinung seiner Lenden nach unten hin sah ich wie das Aussehen eines Feuers, und ein Glanz war rings um ihn her.
28 Wie der Bogen aussieht, der an einem Regentag in den Wolken erscheint, so war auch der Glanz ringsum anzusehen. So war das Aussehen der Erscheinung der Herrlichkeit des Herrn. Als ich sie sah, fiel ich auf mein Angesicht; und ich hörte die Stimme von einem, der redete.

Bevezetés
1 Amikor harminc éves lettem, a negyedik hónap ötödik napján megnyílt a Menny, és látomásokat láttam, amelyek Istentől származtak. Ekkor a száműzetésben[a] élők között voltam, a Kebár folyó partján, Babilóniában. 2 Ez Jójákin király fogságának az ötödik évében[b] történt. 3 Ekkor érkezett meg az Örökkévaló szava Ezékiel paphoz, aki Búzi fia volt. Igen, kétségtelenül az Örökkévaló szólt hozzá, ott a káldeusok földjén[c], a Kebár folyó mellett, és az Örökkévaló helyezte rá a kezét.

4 Ezt láttam: észak felől viharos szél fújt, és nagy zivatarfelhő közeledett, amelyben egymást érték a villámok. Körülötte világosság ragyogott, a belsejében pedig tűz égett, amelyből aranyszínű fény sugárzott, olyan, mint az olvasztott fém ragyogása. 5 A tűz belsejéből négy mennyei teremtmény formája bontakozott ki. Alakjuk emberhez hasonlított, 6 de mindegyiknek négy szárnya és négy különböző arca volt. 7 Lábaik egyenesek voltak, de a borjú patájához hasonló lábfejben végződtek, és úgy ragyogtak, mint a fényesre csiszolt bronz. 8 Mind a négy oldalukon emberi karjuk és kezük volt a szárnyuk alatt. Két szárnyukat fölfelé kiterjesztették, ezekkel egymáshoz értek, két másik szárnyukkal pedig eltakarták a testüket. 12 Mindegyikük egyenesen előre haladt, arra, amerre a szellem vezette őket, s közben nem fordultak sem jobbra, sem balra. 13 Ezek a teremtmények úgy ragyogtak, mint az izzó parázs.
Négyük között, a középen mintha égő fáklyák lobogtak volna. Ezek ide-oda cikáztak a teremtmények között, ahol a tűz a legerősebben ragyogott, s ahonnan időnként villámok csaptak ki. 14 A négy teremtmény együtt mozgott: oly sebesen cikáztak ide-oda, mint a villám.[d]
15 Ahogy néztem őket, észrevettem, hogy mindegyikük lába mellett egy-egy kerék látható. 16 Ezek a kerekek mintha ragyogó aranysárga fényű drágakőből készültek volna: egyformák voltak, és mindet úgy szerkesztették, hogy a belsejében egy másik kerék is látszott. 17 Mind a négy teremtmény megfordulás nélkül minden irányban tudott mozogni. 18 Mind a négynek még a hátát is mindenütt szemek borították. Milyen fenségesek és félelmetesek voltak!
19-20 Amikor valamerre elmozdultak, a mellettük lévő kerekek is szorosan velük együtt haladtak. Amikor a teremtmények felrepültek, a kerekek is velük együtt repültek, mert ezeknek a teremtményeknek a szelleme a mellettük lévő kerekekben volt. Mindig arra mozdultak, amerre a szellem akarta. 21 Ha a teremtmények továbbmozdultak, a kerekek is velük együtt haladtak, ha ők megálltak, a kerekek is, ha ők felrepültek, a kerekek is, mert ezeknek a teremtményeknek a szelleme a mellettük lévő kerekekben volt.
22 A fejük fölött kristály-boltozathoz[e] hasonló mennyezet látszott. 23 A boltozat alatt mindegyik teremtmény két szárnyát kiterjesztette úgy, hogy az éppen összeérjen a mellette lévő teremtmények szárnyával. Másik két szárnyával a pedig a saját testét takarta be.
24 Amikor a teremtmények mozogtak, a szárnyuk olyan hangot keltett, mint a tengerparti hullámok zúgása, vagy mint a Mindenható Isten hangja, vagy egy nagy sokaság morajlása. Amikor megálltak, leeresztették szárnyaikat.
25 Azután hangot hallottam a fölöttük lévő mennyezet felől — ekkor ők megálltak, és leeresztették szárnyaikat. 26 A boltozat fölött kék színű drágakőhöz hasonló királyi trónushoz hasonlót láttam. Ezen ült valaki, akinek alakja emberhez hasonlított. 27 Derekától fölfelé mintha a belsejében tűz égett volna, amelyből aranyszínű fény sugárzott, és ragyogás vette körül. Derekától lefelé szintén égő tűzhöz hasonlított, amelyet ragyogó fényözön övezett. 28 Ez a ragyogás, amely a trónon ülőt körülvette, a szivárványhoz hasonlított, amely eső után szokott feltűnni a felhőkön. 1 Le cinquième jour du quatrième mois de la trentième année[a], je me trouvais parmi les déportés, près du canal du Kebar[b]. Le ciel s’ouvrit et Dieu m’envoya des visions.
2 Le cinquième jour du mois de cette année-là, c’est-à-dire la cinquième année de la captivité du roi Yehoyakîn[c], 3 l’Eternel adressa la parole à Ezéchiel, fils du prêtre Bouzi, au pays des Chaldéens, près du canal du Kebar. Là, la main de l’Eternel reposa sur lui.

4 Je vis soudain un vent de tempête venant du nord qui poussait devant lui un énorme nuage sillonné d’éclairs. Ce nuage était entouré d’une clarté éblouissante. En son centre, il y avait l’éclat d’un métal au milieu du feu[d]. 5 En son milieu, je distinguais quelque chose qui ressemblait à quatre êtres vivants ; par leur aspect, ils ressemblaient à des hommes[e]. 6 Chacun d’eux avait quatre faces et quatre ailes. 7 Leurs jambes étaient droites ; leurs pieds étaient comme ceux d’un taureau et brillaient comme du bronze poli. 8 Sous leurs ailes, et à leurs quatre côtés, apparaissaient des mains humaines, et chacun des quatre avait ses faces et ses ailes. 9 Leurs ailes se touchaient l’une l’autre par leurs extrémités. Quand ils se déplaçaient, ils ne se tournaient pas, mais chacun avançait droit devant soi. 10 Leurs faces ressemblaient à celle d’un homme, et ils avaient tous les quatre une face de lion à droite, une face de taureau à gauche, et une face d’aigle. 11 Chacun d’eux avait deux paires d’ailes : deux de ces ailes se déployaient vers le haut et chacune touchait une aile d’un autre être vivant de son côté, les deux autres couvraient leurs corps. 12 Chacun d’eux avançait droit devant soi, ils allaient là où l’Esprit[f] les poussait à aller sans qu’aucun d’eux ne se tourne pour se déplacer.
13 Ces êtres vivants avaient l’aspect de braises[g] incandescentes, et de torches brillantes : ils paraissaient embrasés comme des torches brillantes. Le feu courait entre ces êtres vivants ; ils avaient l’éclat du feu et des éclairs jaillissaient de ce feu. 14 Ces êtres couraient, allant et venant en tous sens, comme des éclairs.
15 En contemplant ces êtres vivants, j’aperçus à côté de chacun d’eux une roue qui touchait terre, vers leurs quatre faces. 16 Les quatre roues étaient pareilles : elles semblaient faites en chrysolithe[h] et paraissaient encastrées l’une au milieu de l’autre. 17 Elles pouvaient donc se déplacer dans les quatre directions sans pivoter. 18 Les jantes des quatre roues étaient d’une dimension énorme et terrifiante. Elles étaient couvertes d’yeux sur toute leur circonférence. 19 Quand les êtres vivants se déplaçaient, les roues se déplaçaient à côté d’eux, et quand ils s’élevaient de terre, elles s’élevaient aussi. 20 Ils allaient là où l’Esprit[i] les poussait à aller. Les roues s’élevaient en même temps qu’eux, car l’Esprit qui animait les êtres vivants animait aussi les roues. 21 Quand les êtres vivants s’avançaient, se tenaient arrêtés ou s’élevaient de terre, les roues s’avançaient, se tenaient arrêtées ou s’élevaient de terre en même temps qu’eux, car l’Esprit qui animait les êtres vivants animait aussi les roues.
22 Au-dessus de la tête de ces êtres vivants s’étendait quelque chose qui ressemblait à une étendue céleste et qui avait l’éclat éblouissant du cristal. 23 Sous cette étendue, ils tendaient leurs ailes jusqu’à toucher celles de leurs voisins, et chacun en avait deux qui lui couvraient le corps. 24 Quand ils se déplaçaient, j’entendais le bruit de leurs ailes, un bruit semblable au grondement de grosses eaux ou à la voix du Tout-Puissant, c’était un bruit de grand tumulte comme celui d’un campement guerrier. Quand ils s’arrêtaient, ils abaissaient leurs ailes. 25 Alors une voix retentit au-dessus de l’étendue céleste qui surplombait leur tête. 26 Par-dessus cette étendue apparaissait comme une pierre de saphir qui avait la forme d’un trône, et au-dessus de ce qui ressemblait à un trône, au point le plus élevé, se tenait un être ayant l’aspect d’un homme. 27 Je vis que la partie supérieure de son corps, au-dessus de ce qui ressemblait à sa taille, avait un éclat étincelant et l’aspect du feu tout autour, et la partie inférieure semblait comme baignée de feu et répandait autour d’elle une vive clarté. 28 La clarté qui l’environnait avait l’aspect de l’arc-en-ciel qui resplendit dans les nuées en un jour de pluie. C’est ainsi que m’apparut ce qui ressemblait à la gloire de l’Eternel. A cette vue, je tombai la face contre terre, et j’entendis quelqu’un me parler.
