The Vision of Jerusalem

In the sixth year, on the fifth day of the sixth month, I had just sat down in my house, with the elders of Judah seated in front of me. All of a sudden, the hand of the Lord God touched me and I saw a likeness comparable to the appearance of a man. From his thighs downward there was the appearance of fire, and from his waist upward, there was the appearance of brightness that looked like brass.

The form of a hand reached out and took me by the hair of my head. Then the Spirit lifted me up between the earth and sky, brought me toward Jerusalem, and in visions that came from God took me through the doors of the inner gate that faced north, where an image that provoked God’s jealous anger had been erected.

All of a sudden, the glory of the God of Israel was there! It looked like what I had seen back in the valley. Then he told me, “Son of Man, look up toward the north.”

So I looked off toward the north. Suddenly, off toward the north, facing the gate that led to the altar, the image that provoked God’s jealousy was standing near the entrance.

Then the Spirit[a] told me, “Son of Man, don’t you see what they’re doing? The house of Israel practices awful, detestable things here, so I’m going far away from my sanctuary. But you’re about to see things even more detestable than these.”

Idol Worship in the Temple

Then the Spirit[b] brought me to the entrance of the court. As I watched, all of a sudden, there was a[c] hole in the wall! Then he told me, “Son of Man, dig through the wall!” So I dug into the wall. That’s when I uncovered an entrance!

Then he told me, “Go on through that entrance, so you may see the wicked, detestable things that they’re committing here.”

10 So I entered, looked around, and there was every form of crawling thing, loathsome animals, and all kinds of idols from the house of Israel carved all around the wall. 11 I saw 70 men from the elders of the house of Israel standing among them, including Shaphan’s son Jaazaniah. Each man held a censer in his hand. As the scent of the cloud of incense ascended, 12 the Spirit[d] asked me, “Do you see, Son of Man, what the elders of Israel’s house are doing in secret, each in the chamber of his own carved idol? They keep saying, ‘God doesn’t see us. The Lord has abandoned the land.’”

13 Then the Spirit[e] told me, “You’re about to see even more detestable practices that they’re doing!”

Women Weeping for Tammuz

14 Then he brought me to the entrance of the gate to the Lord’s Temple, which faced the north. That’s where I saw women seated, weeping for Tammuz. 15 Then he asked me, “Do you see this, Son of Man? You’re about to see even more detestable practices than these.”

Sun Worship in the Temple

16 Then he brought me to the inner court of the Lord’s Temple. There, at the entrance to the Lord’s Temple, between the porch and the altar, were 25 men, with their backs toward the Lord’s Temple and facing the east, prostrating themselves to the sun.

17 “Do you see this, Son of Man?” he asked me. “Is it an insignificant thing for Judah’s house to commit the detestable things that they’re doing here? They’ve filled the land with violence and turned away from me, causing me to become angry again. Look how they’re sniffing with their noses![f] 18 I’m going to deal with them in rage and anger. I’ll show neither pity nor compassion. They’ll cry loudly directly in my ears, but I won’t listen to them.”

Abominations in the Temple and in Jerusalem

And then[a] in the sixth year, in the sixth month, on the fifth day of the month, I was sitting in my house, and the elders of Judah were sitting before me.[b] And the hand of the Lord Yahweh fell on me there, and I saw,[c] and look! A figure like the appearance of a man;[d] from the appearance of his waist and below was fire, and from his waist and upward[e] was like the appearance of brightness,[f] like the outward appearance of[g] amber. And he sent out the form of a hand, and he took me by a lock of hair of my head, and the Spirit lifted me between earth and heaven, and it brought me to Jerusalem in visions of God to the doorway of the inner gate that faced north,[h] at which there was the seat of the image of jealousy, which was making jealous. And look! There was the glory of the God of Israel like the vision that I saw in the valley. And he said to me, “Son of man,[i] lift up now[j] your eyes toward the north.”[k] And I lifted up my eyes toward the north,[l] and, look, there was to the north of the gate of the altar this image of jealousy at the entrance. And he said to me, “Son of man,[m]Do you see[n] what they are doing—great detestable things that the house of Israel is committing[o] here so as to drive me from[p] my sanctuary, and yet you will see again[q] greater[r] detestable things.” And he brought me to the doorway of the courtyard, and I saw, and look! A hole in the wall. And he said to me, “Son of man,[s] dig now[t] through the wall.” And I dug through the wall, and look! There was a doorway. And he said to me, “Come and see the detestable things, the evil that they are doing[u] here. 10 And I came, and I saw, and look, all kinds of creatures[v] and detestable beasts;[w] and all of the idols of the house of Israel were carved on the wall all around.[x] 11 And seventy men from the elders of the house of Israel, and Jaazaniah, the son of Shaphan, was standing in the midst of them, and they were standing before them.[y] Each one had his censer in his hand, and the fragrance of the cloud of the incense was going up. 12 And he said to me, “Have you seen, son of man,[z] what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, each in the inner rooms of his idol, for they are saying, ‘Yahweh is not seeing us; Yahweh has abandoned the land.’” 13 And he said to me, “Still you will see again[aa] greater detestable things that they are doing.” 14 And he brought me to the doorway of the gate of the house of Yahweh that is toward the north, and look! There were the women sitting weeping for Tammuz. 15 And he said to me, “Have you seen, son of man?[ab] Still you will see again[ac] greater detestable things than these.” 16 And he brought me to the inner courtyard of the house of Yahweh, and look, at the doorway of the temple of Yahweh, between the portico and the altar, there were about twenty-five men with their backs to the temple of Yahweh and their faces toward the east, and they were bowing down toward the east before the sun. 17 And he said to me, “Have you seen, son of man?[ad] Was it too small a thing[ae] for the house of Judah to do[af] the detestable things that they did here? For they filled up the land with violence, and they provoked me to anger again,[ag] and look! They are putting the branch to their nose. 18 And so I will act in rage, and my eye will not take pity, and I will not have compassion, and they will cry in my ear with a loud voice, and I will not hear them.”
