The Pitiless Wrath of Yahweh

Moreover, the word of Yahweh came to me saying, “Now as for you, son of man, thus says Lord Yahweh to the land of Israel, ‘An (A)end! The end is coming on the four corners of the earth. Now the end is upon you, and I will send My anger against you; I will judge you according to your ways and put all your abominations upon you. For My eye will have no pity on you, nor will I spare you, but I will (B)put your ways upon you, and your abominations will be among you; then you will (C)know that I am Yahweh!’

“Thus says Lord Yahweh, ‘A (D)calamitous evil, a unique calamitous evil, behold, it is coming! An end has come; the end has come! It has (E)awakened against you; behold, it is coming! Your doom has come to you, O inhabitant of the land. The (F)time has come; the (G)day is near—confusion rather than joyful shouting on the mountains. Now it is near when I will (H)pour out My wrath on you and spend My anger against you and (I)judge you according to your ways and put on you all your abominations. My eye will show no pity, nor will I spare. I will give to you according to your ways, while your abominations are among you; then you will know that I, Yahweh, do the striking.

10 ‘Behold, the day! Behold, it is coming! Your doom has gone forth; the (J)rod has blossomed; arrogance has budded. 11 Violence [a]has grown into a rod of (K)wickedness. None of them shall remain, none of their multitude, none of their (L)moaning, nor anything eminent among them. 12 The (M)time has come; the day has arrived. Let not the (N)buyer be glad nor the seller mourn; for (O)wrath is against all their multitude. 13 Indeed, the seller will not (P)return to himself [b]what he sold as long as [c]they both live; for the vision regarding all their multitude will not return empty, nor will any of them strengthen his life by his iniquity.

14 ‘They have (Q)blown the trumpet and made everything ready, but no one is going to the battle, for My wrath is against all [d]their multitude. 15 The (R)sword is outside, and the plague and the famine are inside. He who is in the field will die by the sword; famine and the plague will also devour those in the city. 16 Even when their survivors (S)escape, they will be on the mountains like (T)doves of the valleys, all of them (U)moaning, each over his own iniquity. 17 All (V)hands will hang limp, and all knees will [e]become like water. 18 They will (W)gird themselves with sackcloth, and (X)horror will cover them; and shame will be on all faces and (Y)baldness on all their heads. 19 They will (Z)throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will become an impure thing; their (AA)silver and their gold will not be able to deliver them in the day of the fury of Yahweh. They cannot satisfy their soul, nor can they fill their stomachs, for their iniquity has become an occasion of stumbling.

The Temple Profaned

20 They [f]transformed the beauty of His ornaments into pride, and (AB)they made the images of their abominations and their detestable things with it; therefore I will make it an impure thing to them. 21 I will give it into the hands of the (AC)foreigners as plunder and to the wicked of the earth as spoil, and they will profane it. 22 I will also turn My (AD)face from them, and they will profane My secret place; then robbers will enter and profane it.

23 (AE)Make the chain, for the land is full of (AF)judgments that promote bloodshed, and the city is (AG)full of violence. 24 Therefore, I will bring the most evil of the (AH)nations, and they will possess their houses. I will also make the (AI)pride of the strong ones cease, and their (AJ)holy places will be profaned. 25 Anguish has come, and they will seek (AK)peace, but there will be none. 26 (AL)Disaster will come upon disaster, and (AM)report will be added to report; then they will seek a (AN)vision from a prophet, but the (AO)law will be lost from the priest and (AP)counsel from the elders. 27 The king will mourn, the prince will be (AQ)clothed with desolation, and the hands of the people of the land will be dismayed. According to their way I will deal with them, and by their judgments I will judge them. And they will know that I am Yahweh.’”

Impending Disaster

The word of the Lord came to me: “And you, O son of man, thus says the Lord God to the land of Israel: An end! The end has come upon the four corners of the land. Now the end is upon you, and I will let loose my anger upon you, and will judge you according to your ways; and I will punish you for all your abominations. And my eye will not spare you, nor will I have pity; but I will punish you for your ways, while your abominations are in your midst. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

“Thus says the Lord God: Disaster after disaster! Behold, it comes. An end has come, the end has come; it has awakened against you. Behold, it comes. Your doom[a] has come to you, O inhabitant of the land; the time has come, the day is near, a day of tumult, and not of joyful shouting upon the mountains. Now I will soon pour out my wrath upon you, and spend my anger against you, and judge you according to your ways; and I will punish you for all your abominations. And my eye will not spare, nor will I have pity; I will punish you according to your ways, while your abominations are in your midst. Then you will know that I am the Lord, who smite.

10 “Behold, the day! Behold, it comes! Your doom[b] has come, injustice[c] has blossomed, pride has budded. 11 Violence has grown up into a rod of wickedness; none of them shall remain, nor their abundance, nor their wealth; neither shall there be pre-eminence among them.[d] 12 The time has come, the day draws near. Let not the buyer rejoice, nor the seller mourn, for wrath is upon all their multitude. 13 For the seller shall not return to what he has sold, while they live. For wrath[e] is upon all their multitude; it shall not turn back; and because of his iniquity, none can maintain his life.[f]

14 “They have blown the trumpet and made all ready; but none goes to battle, for my wrath is upon all their multitude. 15 The sword is without, pestilence and famine are within; he that is in the field dies by the sword; and him that is in the city famine and pestilence devour. 16 And if any survivors escape, they will be on the mountains, like doves of the valleys, all of them moaning, every one over his iniquity. 17 All hands are feeble, and all knees weak as water. 18 They gird themselves with sackcloth, and horror covers them; shame is upon all faces, and baldness on all their heads. 19 They cast their silver into the streets, and their gold is like an unclean thing; their silver and gold are not able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the Lord; they cannot satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs with it. For it was the stumbling block of their iniquity. 20 Their[g] beautiful ornament they used for vainglory, and they made their abominable images and their detestable things of it; therefore I will make it an unclean thing to them. 21 And I will give it into the hands of foreigners for a prey, and to the wicked of the earth for a spoil; and they shall profane it. 22 I will turn my face from them, that they may profane my precious[h] place; robbers shall enter and profane it, 23 and make a desolation.[i]

“Because the land is full of bloody crimes and the city is full of violence, 24 I will bring the worst of the nations to take possession of their houses; I will put an end to their proud might, and their holy places shall be profaned. 25 When anguish comes, they will seek peace, but there shall be none. 26 Disaster comes upon disaster, rumor follows rumor; they seek a vision from the prophet, but the law perishes from the priest, and counsel from the elders. 27 The king mourns, the prince is wrapped in despair, and the hands of the people of the land are palsied by terror. According to their way I will do to them, and according to their own judgments I will judge them; and they shall know that I am the Lord.”

The End Has Come

The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says to the land of Israel:

“‘The end!(A) The end has come
upon the four corners(B) of the land!
The end is now upon you,
and I will unleash my anger against you.
I will judge you according to your conduct(C)
and repay you for all your detestable practices.(D)
I will not look on you with pity;(E)
    I will not spare you.
I will surely repay you for your conduct
and for the detestable practices among you.

“‘Then you will know that I am the Lord.’(F)

“This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘Disaster!(G) Unheard-of[a] disaster!
    See, it comes!
The end(H) has come!
    The end has come!
It has roused itself against you.
    See, it comes!
Doom has come upon you,
upon you who dwell in the land.
The time has come! The day(I) is near!(J)
There is panic, not joy, on the mountains.
I am about to pour out my wrath(K) on you
and spend my anger against you.
I will judge you according to your conduct
and repay you for all your detestable practices.(L)
I will not look on you with pity;
    I will not spare you.(M)
I will repay you for your conduct
and for the detestable practices among you.(N)

“‘Then you will know that it is I the Lord who strikes you.(O)

10 “‘See, the day!
    See, it comes!
Doom has burst forth,
    the rod(P) has budded,
    arrogance has blossomed!
11 Violence(Q) has arisen,[b]
a rod to punish the wicked.
None of the people will be left,
    none of that crowd—
none of their wealth,
    nothing of value.(R)
12 The time has come!
    The day has arrived!
Let not the buyer(S) rejoice
    nor the seller grieve,
for my wrath is on the whole crowd.(T)
13 The seller will not recover
    the property that was sold—
as long as both buyer and seller live.
For the vision concerning the whole crowd
    will not be reversed.
Because of their sins, not one of them
    will preserve their life.(U)

14 “‘They have blown the trumpet,(V)
they have made all things ready,
but no one will go into battle,
for my wrath(W) is on the whole crowd.
15 Outside is the sword;
    inside are plague and famine.
Those in the country
    will die by the sword;
those in the city
will be devoured by famine and plague.(X)
16 The fugitives(Y) who escape
    will flee to the mountains.
Like doves(Z) of the valleys,
    they will all moan,
    each for their own sins.(AA)
17 Every hand will go limp;(AB)
every leg will be wet with urine.(AC)
18 They will put on sackcloth(AD)
    and be clothed with terror.(AE)
Every face will be covered with shame,
and every head will be shaved.(AF)

19 “‘They will throw their silver into the streets,(AG)
and their gold will be treated as a thing unclean.
Their silver and gold
will not be able to deliver them
in the day of the Lord’s wrath.(AH)
It will not satisfy(AI) their hunger
    or fill their stomachs,
for it has caused them to stumble(AJ) into sin.(AK)
20 They took pride in their beautiful jewelry
and used it to make(AL) their detestable idols.
They made it into vile images;(AM)
therefore I will make it a thing unclean for them.(AN)
21 I will give their wealth as plunder(AO) to foreigners
and as loot to the wicked of the earth,
    who will defile it.(AP)
22 I will turn my face(AQ) away from the people,
and robbers will desecrate the place I treasure.
They will enter it
    and will defile it.(AR)

23 “‘Prepare chains!
For the land is full of bloodshed,(AS)
and the city is full of violence.(AT)
24 I will bring the most wicked of nations
to take possession of their houses.
I will put an end to the pride of the mighty,
and their sanctuaries(AU) will be desecrated.(AV)
25 When terror comes,
they will seek peace in vain.(AW)
26 Calamity upon calamity(AX) will come,
    and rumor upon rumor.
They will go searching for a vision from the prophet,(AY)
priestly instruction in the law will cease,
the counsel of the elders will come to an end.(AZ)
27 The king will mourn,
the prince will be clothed with despair,(BA)
and the hands of the people of the land will tremble.
I will deal with them according to their conduct,(BB)
and by their own standards I will judge them.

“‘Then they will know that I am the Lord.(BC)’”
