The Lord Tells Ezekiel about the Fall of Jerusalem

⌞The Lord said,⌟ “Son of man, take a sharp blade, and use it as a barber’s razor to shave your head and beard. Take scales to weigh your hair and divide it ⌞into three even parts⌟. When the blockade is over, burn one-third of your hair in a fire in the middle of the city. Take another third, and cut it up with a blade around the city. Then scatter the remaining third to the wind, and I will draw a sword and go after it. Take a few strands of hair, and wrap them in the hem of your clothes. Later, take some of them, and throw them in a fire and burn them up. From there a fire will spread throughout the whole nation of Israel.

“This is what the Almighty Lord says: This is Jerusalem! I have placed it in the center of the nations with countries all around it. The people of Jerusalem have rebelled against my rules and my laws more than the surrounding nations. They have rejected my rules, and they don’t live by my laws.

“So this is what the Almighty Lord says: ⌞People of Jerusalem,⌟ you have caused more trouble than the nations around you. You haven’t lived by my laws or obeyed my rules. You haven’t even lived up to the standards of the nations around you.

“So this is what the Almighty Lord says: I, too, am against you, and I will punish you in front of the nations. Because of all the detestable things that you do, I will do things to you that I have never done before and will never do again. 10 That is why parents will eat their children, and children will eat their parents. I will punish you and scatter whoever is left to the wind.

11 “As I live, declares the Almighty Lord, because you have dishonored my holy worship place with all your disgusting and detestable things, I will have you killed. I will not have compassion for you or feel sorry for you. 12 One-third of you will die in plagues and be devoured in famines. Another third will die in battles against those around you. I will scatter the remaining third to the wind, and I will pursue them with a sword.

13 “I will unleash my anger. I will use my fury against you, and I will get revenge. When my fury is unleashed against you, you will know that I, the Lord, spoke to you while I was angry. 14 I will turn you into a wasteland and an object of ridicule among the nations around you and in the presence of everyone who passes by you. 15 The nations that are around you will ridicule you and laugh at you. When I punish you because of my anger, fury, and fierce revenge, you will become something ridiculed and something horrible. I, the Lord, have spoken. 16 When I shoot my destructive arrows of famine at you, I will shoot to kill you. I will bring more and more famines into your land, and I will cut off your food supply. 17 I will send famines and wild animals against you, and they will rob you of your children. I will send plagues, violence, and wars to kill you. I, the Lord, have spoken.”

A Prophecy against the Mountains of Israel

The Lord spoke his word to me. He said, “Son of man, look toward the mountains of Israel, and prophesy against them. Say this, ‘You mountains of Israel, listen to the Almighty Lord’s word! This is what the Almighty Lord says to the mountains and hills and to the ravines and valleys: I am going to attack you with a sword and destroy your worship sites. Your altars will be destroyed, and your incense burners will be smashed. I will kill people in front of your idols. I will lay the dead bodies of the people of Israel in front of your idols, and I will scatter their bones around your altars. Wherever people live, the cities will be ruined, and the worship sites will be wrecked. Your altars will be ruined and demolished. Your idols will be smashed and completely destroyed. Your incense burners will be cut down, and everything you have done will be wiped out. People will be killed, and they will fall among you. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

“ ‘But I will let some people live. Some people will escape the battle among the nations and be scattered throughout the countries. Then those who escape will remember me among the nations where they are taken captive. I was hurt by their adulterous hearts, which turned away from me, and by their eyes, which lusted after idols. They will hate themselves for the evil and disgusting things that they have done. 10 Then you will know that I am the Lord and that the disaster I promised was not an empty threat.

11 “ ‘This is what the Almighty Lord says: Clap your hands, stomp your feet, and say, “Oh no!” because the people of Israel have done evil and disgusting things. So they will die in wars, famines, and plagues. 12 Plagues will kill those who are far away. Those who are near will die in wars, and anyone who is left and has escaped will die in famines. This is how I will unleash my anger. 13 Then you will know that I am the Lord.

“ ‘Those who are killed will lie beside the idols around their altars. They will lie on every high hill, on all the mountaintops, and under every large tree and every leafy oak. These are the places where they made offerings to their disgusting idols. 14 I will use my power against them and destroy the land, from the desert to Diblah. Then they will know that I am the Lord.’ ”

The Lord’s Judgment on Israel

The Lord spoke his word to me. He said, “Son of man, this is what the Almighty Lord says to ⌞the people in⌟ the land of Israel: The end is coming! The end is coming to the four corners of the earth. Now the end is coming for you. I will send my anger against you. I will judge you for the way you have lived, and I will punish you for all the detestable things that you have done. I will not have compassion for you or feel sorry for you. I will pay you back for the way you have lived and for the detestable things you have done. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

“This is what the Almighty Lord says: One disaster after another is coming. The end is coming. The end is coming. It is stirring itself up against you. It is coming! Destruction is coming to you, inhabitants of the land. The time is coming. The day is near. There will be confusion. There will be no joy in the mountains. Soon I will pour out my fury on you and unleash my anger on you. I will judge you for the way you have lived, and I will punish you for all the detestable things that you have done. I will not have compassion or feel sorry. I will pay you back for the way you have lived and for the detestable things that you are still doing. Then you will know that I am the Lord and that I am the one attacking ⌞you⌟.

10 “The day is near! It is coming! Destruction is coming! Wrongdoing has blossomed. Arrogance has flourished. 11 Violence has grown into a weapon for punishing wickedness. None of the people will be left. None of that crowd, none of their wealth, and nothing of value will be left. 12 The time is coming. The day is near. Buyers will not rejoice, and sellers will not mourn, because ⌞my⌟ fury will be against the whole crowd. 13 Sellers will not live long enough to buy back what they have sold. The visions against that crowd will not change. Because of their sins, none of the people will live. 14 They have blown a ram’s horn, and everything is ready. But no one will go into battle, because my fury is against their whole crowd.

15 “Outside are swords, and inside are plagues and famines. Whoever is in a field will die in battle. Whoever is in the city will be devoured by famines and plagues. 16 Those who survive will escape to the mountains. They will moan like doves in the valleys. They will moan because of their sins. 17 Every hand will hang limp, and every knee will be as weak as water. 18 They will put on sackcloth, and horror will cover them. All their faces will be covered with shame, and every head will be shaved. 19 They will throw their silver and gold into the streets like garbage. Their silver and gold won’t be able to rescue them on the day of the Lord’s anger. It will no longer satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs. Their silver and gold caused them to fall into sin. 20 They were proud of their beautiful jewels and used them to make disgusting and detestable statues ⌞of false gods⌟. That is why I will make their jewels disgusting. 21 I will hand their jewels over to foreigners as loot and to the most evil people on earth as prizes. These foreigners will dishonor the people of Israel. 22 I will turn my face away from the people of Israel, and foreigners will dishonor my treasured place. Robbers will go in and dishonor it.

23 “Get the chains ready! The land is filled with murder, and the city is filled with violence. 24 So I will send the most evil nation, and it will take possession of people’s houses. I will stop those who are strong from feeling proud, and their holy places will be dishonored. 25 Anguish is coming. People will look for peace, but there will be none. 26 One disaster will happen after another. One rumor will follow another. People will ask for a vision from a prophet. The teachings of priests and the advice of leaders will disappear. 27 Kings will mourn, and princes will give up hope. The common people will lose their courage. I will give them what they deserve and judge them as they have judged others. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Idolatry in Jerusalem

On the fifth day of the sixth month in the sixth year, I was sitting in my home. Judah’s leaders were sitting in front of me. The power of the Almighty Lord came over me. As I looked, I saw something that looked like a human. From the waist down its body looked like fire, and from the waist up its body looked like glowing metal. It stretched out what looked like a hand and grabbed me by the hair on my head. In these visions from God, the Spirit carried me between heaven and earth. He took me to Jerusalem, to the entrance to the north gate of the inner courtyard of the temple. That was where an idol that stirs up ⌞God’s⌟ anger was located. There I saw the glory of Israel’s God as I did in the vision that I saw in the valley.

God said to me, “Son of man, look toward the north.” So I looked toward the north, and there in the entrance to the north gate beside the altar, I saw the idol that stirs up ⌞God’s⌟ anger.

He asked me, “Son of man, do you see what the people of Israel are doing? The people of Israel are doing very disgusting things here, things that will force me to go far away from my holy place. But you will see even more disgusting things.”

Then he took me to the entrance of the courtyard. As I looked, I saw a hole in the wall. He said to me, “Son of man, dig through the wall.” So I dug through the wall, and I saw a door.

He said to me, “Go in, and see the wicked, disgusting things that the people of Israel are doing here.” 10 So I went in and looked. I saw that the walls were covered with drawings of every kind of crawling creature, every kind of disgusting animal, and all the idols in the nation of Israel. 11 In front of these drawings stood 70 of Israel’s leaders. Jaazaniah, son of Shaphan, was standing with the leaders. Each of them was holding an incense burner in his hand, and a cloud of incense went up.

12 God asked me, “Son of man, do you see what the leaders of the nation of Israel are doing in secret? Each of them is in the room where his god is, and each one of them is thinking, ‘The Lord doesn’t see me. The Lord has abandoned this land.’ ”

13 Then he said to me, “You will see even more disgusting things that they are doing.”

14 He brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the Lord’s temple. Women were sitting there and crying for the god Tammuz. 15 He asked me, “Son of man, do you see this? You will see even more disgusting things than these.”

16 Then he brought me into the inner courtyard of the Lord’s temple. There at the entrance to the Lord’s temple, between the entrance and the altar, were about 25 men who had their backs turned to the Lord’s temple. They were facing east and worshiping the rising sun. 17 He asked me, “Son of man, do you see this? Isn’t it bad enough that the people of Judah have done these disgusting things that you have seen here? Yet, they also fill the land with violence and continue to provoke me even more. Look how they insult me in the worst possible way. 18 So I will take action because I’m angry, and I won’t have compassion for them or feel sorry for them. Even if they shout in my ears, I won’t listen to them.”

God’s Razor of Judgment

“Now, son of man, take a sharp sword and use it as a barber’s razor(A) to shave(B) your head and your beard.(C) Then take a set of scales and divide up the hair. When the days of your siege come to an end, burn(D) a third(E) of the hair inside the city. Take a third and strike it with the sword all around the city. And scatter a third to the wind.(F) For I will pursue them with drawn sword.(G) But take a few hairs and tuck them away in the folds of your garment.(H) Again, take a few of these and throw them into the fire(I) and burn them up. A fire will spread from there to all Israel.

“This is what the Sovereign Lord says: This is Jerusalem, which I have set in the center of the nations, with countries all around her.(J) Yet in her wickedness she has rebelled against my laws and decrees more than the nations and countries around her. She has rejected my laws and has not followed my decrees.(K)

“Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: You have been more unruly than the nations around you and have not followed my decrees or kept my laws. You have not even[a] conformed to the standards of the nations around you.(L)

“Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself am against you, Jerusalem, and I will inflict punishment on you in the sight of the nations.(M) Because of all your detestable idols, I will do to you what I have never done before and will never do again.(N) 10 Therefore in your midst parents will eat their children, and children will eat their parents.(O) I will inflict punishment on you and will scatter all your survivors to the winds.(P) 11 Therefore as surely as I live,(Q) declares the Sovereign(R) Lord, because you have defiled my sanctuary(S) with all your vile images(T) and detestable practices,(U) I myself will shave you; I will not look on you with pity or spare you.(V) 12 A third of your people will die of the plague or perish by famine inside you; a third will fall by the sword outside your walls; and a third I will scatter to the winds(W) and pursue with drawn sword.(X)

13 “Then my anger will cease and my wrath(Y) against them will subside, and I will be avenged.(Z) And when I have spent my wrath on them, they will know that I the Lord have spoken in my zeal.(AA)

14 “I will make you a ruin and a reproach among the nations around you, in the sight of all who pass by.(AB) 15 You will be a reproach(AC) and a taunt, a warning(AD) and an object of horror to the nations around you when I inflict punishment on you in anger and in wrath and with stinging rebuke.(AE) I the Lord have spoken.(AF) 16 When I shoot at you with my deadly and destructive arrows of famine, I will shoot to destroy you. I will bring more and more famine upon you and cut off your supply of food.(AG) 17 I will send famine and wild beasts(AH) against you, and they will leave you childless. Plague and bloodshed(AI) will sweep through you, and I will bring the sword against you. I the Lord have spoken.(AJ)

Doom for the Mountains of Israel

The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, set your face(AK) against the mountains(AL) of Israel; prophesy against them(AM) and say: ‘You mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign Lord. This is what the Sovereign Lord says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys:(AN) I am about to bring a sword against you, and I will destroy your high places.(AO) Your altars will be demolished and your incense altars(AP) will be smashed; and I will slay your people in front of your idols.(AQ) I will lay the dead bodies of the Israelites in front of their idols, and I will scatter your bones(AR) around your altars.(AS) Wherever you live,(AT) the towns will be laid waste and the high places(AU) demolished, so that your altars will be laid waste and devastated, your idols(AV) smashed and ruined, your incense altars(AW) broken down, and what you have made wiped out.(AX) Your people will fall slain(AY) among you, and you will know that I am the Lord.(AZ)

“‘But I will spare some, for some of you will escape(BA) the sword when you are scattered among the lands and nations.(BB) Then in the nations where they have been carried captive, those who escape will remember(BC) me—how I have been grieved(BD) by their adulterous hearts, which have turned away from me, and by their eyes, which have lusted after their idols.(BE) They will loathe themselves for the evil(BF) they have done and for all their detestable practices.(BG) 10 And they will know that I am the Lord;(BH) I did not threaten in vain to bring this calamity on them.(BI)

11 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Strike your hands together and stamp your feet and cry out “Alas!” because of all the wicked and detestable practices of the people of Israel, for they will fall by the sword, famine and plague.(BJ) 12 One who is far away will die of the plague, and one who is near will fall by the sword, and anyone who survives and is spared will die of famine. So will I pour out my wrath(BK) on them.(BL) 13 And they will know that I am the Lord, when their people lie slain among their idols(BM) around their altars, on every high hill and on all the mountaintops, under every spreading tree and every leafy oak(BN)—places where they offered fragrant incense to all their idols.(BO) 14 And I will stretch out my hand(BP) against them and make the land a desolate waste from the desert to Diblah[b]—wherever they live. Then they will know that I am the Lord.(BQ)’”

The End Has Come

The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says to the land of Israel:

“‘The end!(BR) The end has come
upon the four corners(BS) of the land!
The end is now upon you,
and I will unleash my anger against you.
I will judge you according to your conduct(BT)
and repay you for all your detestable practices.(BU)
I will not look on you with pity;(BV)
    I will not spare you.
I will surely repay you for your conduct
and for the detestable practices among you.

“‘Then you will know that I am the Lord.’(BW)

“This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘Disaster!(BX) Unheard-of[c] disaster!
    See, it comes!
The end(BY) has come!
    The end has come!
It has roused itself against you.
    See, it comes!
Doom has come upon you,
upon you who dwell in the land.
The time has come! The day(BZ) is near!(CA)
There is panic, not joy, on the mountains.
I am about to pour out my wrath(CB) on you
and spend my anger against you.
I will judge you according to your conduct
and repay you for all your detestable practices.(CC)
I will not look on you with pity;
    I will not spare you.(CD)
I will repay you for your conduct
and for the detestable practices among you.(CE)

“‘Then you will know that it is I the Lord who strikes you.(CF)

10 “‘See, the day!
    See, it comes!
Doom has burst forth,
    the rod(CG) has budded,
    arrogance has blossomed!
11 Violence(CH) has arisen,[d]
a rod to punish the wicked.
None of the people will be left,
    none of that crowd—
none of their wealth,
    nothing of value.(CI)
12 The time has come!
    The day has arrived!
Let not the buyer(CJ) rejoice
    nor the seller grieve,
for my wrath is on the whole crowd.(CK)
13 The seller will not recover
    the property that was sold—
as long as both buyer and seller live.
For the vision concerning the whole crowd
    will not be reversed.
Because of their sins, not one of them
    will preserve their life.(CL)

14 “‘They have blown the trumpet,(CM)
they have made all things ready,
but no one will go into battle,
for my wrath(CN) is on the whole crowd.
15 Outside is the sword;
    inside are plague and famine.
Those in the country
    will die by the sword;
those in the city
will be devoured by famine and plague.(CO)
16 The fugitives(CP) who escape
    will flee to the mountains.
Like doves(CQ) of the valleys,
    they will all moan,
    each for their own sins.(CR)
17 Every hand will go limp;(CS)
every leg will be wet with urine.(CT)
18 They will put on sackcloth(CU)
    and be clothed with terror.(CV)
Every face will be covered with shame,
and every head will be shaved.(CW)

19 “‘They will throw their silver into the streets,(CX)
and their gold will be treated as a thing unclean.
Their silver and gold
will not be able to deliver them
in the day of the Lord’s wrath.(CY)
It will not satisfy(CZ) their hunger
    or fill their stomachs,
for it has caused them to stumble(DA) into sin.(DB)
20 They took pride in their beautiful jewelry
and used it to make(DC) their detestable idols.
They made it into vile images;(DD)
therefore I will make it a thing unclean for them.(DE)
21 I will give their wealth as plunder(DF) to foreigners
and as loot to the wicked of the earth,
    who will defile it.(DG)
22 I will turn my face(DH) away from the people,
and robbers will desecrate the place I treasure.
They will enter it
    and will defile it.(DI)

23 “‘Prepare chains!
For the land is full of bloodshed,(DJ)
and the city is full of violence.(DK)
24 I will bring the most wicked of nations
to take possession of their houses.
I will put an end to the pride of the mighty,
and their sanctuaries(DL) will be desecrated.(DM)
25 When terror comes,
they will seek peace in vain.(DN)
26 Calamity upon calamity(DO) will come,
    and rumor upon rumor.
They will go searching for a vision from the prophet,(DP)
priestly instruction in the law will cease,
the counsel of the elders will come to an end.(DQ)
27 The king will mourn,
the prince will be clothed with despair,(DR)
and the hands of the people of the land will tremble.
I will deal with them according to their conduct,(DS)
and by their own standards I will judge them.

“‘Then they will know that I am the Lord.(DT)’”

Idolatry in the Temple

In the sixth year, in the sixth month on the fifth day, while I was sitting in my house and the elders(DU) of Judah were sitting before(DV) me, the hand of the Sovereign Lord came on me there.(DW) I looked, and I saw a figure like that of a man.[e] From what appeared to be his waist down he was like fire, and from there up his appearance was as bright as glowing metal.(DX) He stretched out what looked like a hand(DY) and took me by the hair of my head. The Spirit lifted me up(DZ) between earth and heaven and in visions(EA) of God he took me to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the north gate of the inner court,(EB) where the idol that provokes to jealousy(EC) stood. And there before me was the glory(ED) of the God of Israel, as in the vision I had seen in the plain.(EE)

Then he said to me, “Son of man, look toward the north.” So I looked, and in the entrance north of the gate of the altar I saw this idol(EF) of jealousy.

And he said to me, “Son of man, do you see what they are doing—the utterly detestable(EG) things the Israelites are doing here, things that will drive me far from my sanctuary?(EH) But you will see things that are even more detestable.”

Then he brought me to the entrance to the court. I looked, and I saw a hole in the wall. He said to me, “Son of man, now dig into the wall.” So I dug into the wall and saw a doorway there.

And he said to me, “Go in and see the wicked and detestable things they are doing here.” 10 So I went in and looked, and I saw portrayed all over the walls(EI) all kinds of crawling things and unclean(EJ) animals and all the idols of Israel.(EK) 11 In front of them stood seventy elders(EL) of Israel, and Jaazaniah son of Shaphan was standing among them. Each had a censer(EM) in his hand, and a fragrant cloud of incense(EN) was rising.(EO)

12 He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of Israel are doing in the darkness,(EP) each at the shrine of his own idol? They say, ‘The Lord does not see(EQ) us; the Lord has forsaken the land.’” 13 Again, he said, “You will see them doing things that are even more detestable.”

14 Then he brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the house of the Lord, and I saw women sitting there, mourning the god Tammuz.(ER) 15 He said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? You will see things that are even more detestable than this.”

16 He then brought me into the inner court(ES) of the house of the Lord, and there at the entrance to the temple, between the portico and the altar,(ET) were about twenty-five men. With their backs toward the temple of the Lord and their faces toward the east, they were bowing down to the sun(EU) in the east.(EV)

17 He said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a trivial matter for the people of Judah to do the detestable things(EW) they are doing here? Must they also fill the land with violence(EX) and continually arouse my anger?(EY) Look at them putting the branch to their nose! 18 Therefore I will deal with them in anger;(EZ) I will not look on them with pity(FA) or spare them. Although they shout in my ears, I will not listen(FB) to them.”
