My sheep wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill.(A) They were scattered(B) over the whole earth, and no one searched or looked for them.(C)

“‘Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, because my flock lacks a shepherd and so has been plundered(D) and has become food for all the wild animals,(E) and because my shepherds did not search for my flock but cared for themselves rather than for my flock,(F) therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 10 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against(G) the shepherds and will hold them accountable for my flock. I will remove them from tending the flock so that the shepherds can no longer feed themselves. I will rescue(H) my flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be food for them.(I)

11 “‘For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep(J) and look after them. 12 As a shepherd(K) looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness.(L) 13 I will bring them out from the nations and gather(M) them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land.(N) I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the settlements in the land.(O) 14 I will tend them in a good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel(P) will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in good grazing land, and there they will feed in a rich pasture(Q) on the mountains of Israel.(R) 15 I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down,(S) declares the Sovereign Lord.(T) 16 I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up(U) the injured and strengthen the weak,(V) but the sleek and the strong I will destroy.(W) I will shepherd the flock with justice.(X)

My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and upon every high hill: yea, my flock was scattered upon all the face of the earth, and none did search or seek after them.

Therefore, ye shepherds, hear the word of the Lord;

As I live, saith the Lord God, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock;

Therefore, O ye shepherds, hear the word of the Lord;

10 Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against the shepherds; and I will require my flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them.

11 For thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.

12 As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.

13 And I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country.

14 I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie in a good fold, and in a fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel.

15 I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord God.

16 I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment.

“‘But you, mountains of Israel, will produce branches and fruit(A) for my people Israel, for they will soon come home. I am concerned for you and will look on you with favor; you will be plowed and sown,(B) 10 and I will cause many people to live on you—yes, all of Israel. The towns will be inhabited and the ruins(C) rebuilt.(D) 11 I will increase the number of people and animals living on you, and they will be fruitful(E) and become numerous. I will settle people(F) on you as in the past(G) and will make you prosper more than before.(H) Then you will know that I am the Lord. 12 I will cause people, my people Israel, to live on you. They will possess you, and you will be their inheritance;(I) you will never again deprive them of their children.

But ye, O mountains of Israel, ye shall shoot forth your branches, and yield your fruit to my people of Israel; for they are at hand to come.

For, behold, I am for you, and I will turn unto you, and ye shall be tilled and sown:

10 And I will multiply men upon you, all the house of Israel, even all of it: and the cities shall be inhabited, and the wastes shall be builded:

11 And I will multiply upon you man and beast; and they shall increase and bring fruit: and I will settle you after your old estates, and will do better unto you than at your beginnings: and ye shall know that I am the Lord.

12 Yea, I will cause men to walk upon you, even my people Israel; and they shall possess thee, and thou shalt be their inheritance, and thou shalt no more henceforth bereave them of men.

After many days(A) you will be called to arms. In future years you will invade a land that has recovered from war, whose people were gathered from many nations(B) to the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate. They had been brought out from the nations, and now all of them live in safety.(C)

After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.

  1. Ezekiel 39:25 Or now bring Jacob back from captivity

25 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name;

26 After that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid.

27 When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies' lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations;

28 Then shall they know that I am the Lord their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there.
