Ezekiel Is Israel's Watchman
33 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 (A)“Son of man, speak to (B)your people and say to them, If (C)I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and make him their (D)watchman, 3 and if he sees the sword coming upon the land and (E)blows the trumpet and warns the people, 4 then if anyone who hears the sound of the trumpet does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, (F)his blood shall be upon his own head. 5 (G)He heard the sound of the trumpet and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But if he had taken warning, he would have saved his life. 6 (H)But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, (I)that person is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman's hand.
7 (J)“So you, (K)son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. (L)Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. 8 (M)If I say to the wicked, O wicked one, you shall surely die, (N)and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, (O)that wicked person shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. 9 (P)But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, (Q)that person shall die in his iniquity, (R)but you will have delivered your soul.
Why Will You Die, Israel?
10 “And you, (S)son of man, say to the house of Israel, Thus have you said: ‘Surely our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and (T)we rot away because of them. (U)How then can we live?’ 11 Say to them, (V)As I live, declares the Lord God, (W)I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; (X)turn back, turn back from your evil ways, (Y)for why will you die, O house of Israel?
12 (Z)“And you, son of man, say to (AA)your people, (AB)The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him when he transgresses, (AC)and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall by it when he turns from his wickedness, (AD)and the righteous shall not be able to live by his righteousness[a] when he sins. 13 Though I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, yet (AE)if he trusts in his righteousness and does injustice, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered, but in his injustice that he has done he shall die. 14 Again, (AF)though I say to the wicked, (AG)‘You shall surely die,’ yet (AH)if he turns from his sin and does what is just and right, 15 if the wicked (AI)restores the pledge, (AJ)gives back what he has taken by robbery, and walks (AK)in the statutes of life, not doing injustice, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 16 (AL)None of the sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him. He has done what is just and right; he shall surely live.
17 “Yet (AM)your people say, (AN)‘The way of the Lord is not just,’ when it is their own way that is not just. 18 (AO)When the righteous turns from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it. 19 And (AP)when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does what is just and right, he shall live by this. 20 Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, (AQ)I will judge each of you according to his ways.”
Jerusalem Struck Down
21 In the (AR)twelfth year (AS)of our exile, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month, (AT)a fugitive from Jerusalem came to me and said, (AU)“The city has been struck down.” 22 (AV)Now (AW)the hand of the Lord had been upon me the evening before the fugitive came; and he had opened my mouth by the time the man came to me in the morning, so my mouth was opened, and I was no longer mute.
23 The word of the Lord came to me: 24 (AX)“Son of man, the inhabitants of these (AY)waste places in the land of Israel keep saying, (AZ)‘Abraham was only one man, yet he got possession of the land; but (BA)we are many; the land is surely given us to possess.’ 25 Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord God: (BB)You eat flesh with the blood and (BC)lift up your eyes to your idols and (BD)shed blood; shall you then possess the land? 26 (BE)You rely on the sword, (BF)you commit abominations, and (BG)each of you defiles his neighbor's wife; shall you then possess the land? 27 Say this to them, Thus says the Lord God: (BH)As I live, surely those who are in (BI)the waste places shall fall by (BJ)the sword, and whoever is in the open field I will give to (BK)the beasts to be devoured, and those who are in (BL)strongholds and in caves shall die by (BM)pestilence. 28 (BN)And I will make the land a desolation and a waste, and (BO)her proud might shall come to an end, and (BP)the mountains of Israel shall be so desolate that none will pass through. 29 (BQ)Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I have made the land a desolation and a waste because of all their abominations that they have committed.
30 “As for you, (BR)son of man, (BS)your people who talk together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, say to one another, each to his brother, ‘Come, and hear what the word is that comes from the Lord.’ 31 (BT)And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear what you say but they will not do it; for (BU)with lustful talk in their mouths they act; their heart is set on their gain. 32 And behold, you are to them like one who sings lustful songs with a beautiful voice and (BV)plays[b] well on an instrument, for (BW)they hear what you say, but they will not do it. 33 (BX)When this comes—and come it will!—(BY)then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”

Ezekiel Is Called to Be a Watchman
33 The Lord spoke his word to me. He said, 2 “Son of man, speak to your people. Tell them, ‘Suppose I bring war on this country, and the people of this country choose one of their men and make him their watchman. 3 If he sees the enemy coming to attack the country, he will blow his horn to warn the people. 4 If the people hear the horn and ignore the warning and the enemy comes and takes them, they will be responsible for their own deaths. 5 They heard the sound of the horn but ignored its warning. So they are responsible for their own deaths. If they had taken the warning, they would have saved themselves.
6 “ ‘But if the watchman sees the enemy coming and doesn’t blow his horn to warn the people and the enemy comes and kills someone, that watchman must die because of his sin. I will hold him responsible for their deaths.’
7 “Son of man, I have appointed you as a watchman for the people of Israel. Listen to what I say, and warn them for me. 8 Suppose I say to a wicked person, ‘You wicked person, you will certainly die,’ and you say nothing to warn him to change his ways. That wicked person will die because of his sin, and I will hold you responsible for his death. 9 But if you warn a wicked person to turn from his ways and he doesn’t turn from them, then he will die because of his sin. However, you will save yourself.
10 “Son of man, say to the people of Israel, ‘You have said this, “Our wickedness and our sins weigh us down, and we are rotting away because of them. How can we live?” ’
11 “Tell them, ‘As I live, declares the Almighty Lord, I don’t want wicked people to die. Rather, I want them to turn from their ways and live. Change the way you think and act! Turn from your wicked ways! Do you want to die, people of Israel?’
12 “Son of man, say to your people, ‘The right things that a righteous person has done will not save him when he rebels. The wicked things that a wicked person has done will not make him stumble when he turns from his wickedness. The righteous person will not live when he sins.’ 13 I may promise the righteous person that he will certainly live. But if he trusts in the right things that he has done and he does evil, none of the right things that he has done will be remembered. He will die because of the evil things he has done. 14 I may warn the wicked person that he will certainly die. But suppose he turns from his sin and does what is fair and right. 15 He returns the security for a loan, pays back everything he stole, lives by the rules of life, and does nothing evil. Then he will certainly live. He will not die. 16 None of the sins that he has done will be remembered. He has done what is fair and right. He will certainly live.
17 “But your people say, ‘The Lord’s way is unfair.’ Yet, their ways are unfair. 18 If the righteous person turns from the right things that he has done and does evil, he will die because of it. 19 If the wicked person turns from his wickedness and does what is fair and right, he will live because of it. 20 Yet, the people of Israel say, ‘The Lord’s way is unfair.’ I will judge each of you by your own ways, people of Israel.”
21 On the fifth day of the tenth month in the twelfth year of our captivity, a refugee from Jerusalem came to me. He said, “The city has been captured.” 22 The evening before the refugee arrived, the power of the Lord came over me. On the morning the refugee arrived, the Lord made me speak. So I spoke, and I was no longer quiet.
23 The Lord spoke his word to me. He said, 24 “Son of man, those who live in the ruined cities in Israel are saying, ‘Abraham was only one person, and he was given the land. But we are many. Certainly the land has been given to us.’ 25 So tell them, ‘This is what the Almighty Lord says: You eat meat with blood in it. You look to your idols for help. You murder people. Should the land be given to you? 26 You rely on your swords. You do disgusting things. You dishonor your neighbor’s wife. Should the land be given to you?’
27 “Tell them, ‘This is what the Almighty Lord says: As I live, whoever is in the ruined cities will be killed in battle. Whoever is in the open field will become food for wild animals. Whoever is in fortified places and caves will die from plagues. 28 I will turn the land into a barren wasteland. People will no longer brag about its power. The mountains of Israel will become so ruined that no one will travel through them. 29 Then people will know that I am the Lord, when I make the land a barren wasteland because of all the disgusting things that they have done.’
30 “Son of man, your people are talking about you by the walls and in the doorways of their homes. They are saying to each other, ‘Let’s go and hear the word that has come from the Lord.’ 31 Then they come to you, as if they are still my people, and they sit down in front of you. They listen to what you say, but they don’t do it. They say that they love me, but in their hearts they chase dishonest profits. 32 To them you are nothing more than a singer with a beautiful voice who sings love songs or a musician who plays an instrument. They listen to your words, but they don’t do them. 33 When all your words come true—and they certainly will come true—these people will know that a prophet has been among them.”

(Ez. 3.16-21)
33 Vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo: 2 Hijo de hombre, habla a los hijos de tu pueblo, y diles: Cuando trajere yo espada sobre la tierra, y el pueblo de la tierra tomare un hombre de su territorio y lo pusiere por atalaya, 3 y él viere venir la espada sobre la tierra, y tocare trompeta y avisare al pueblo, 4 cualquiera que oyere el sonido de la trompeta y no se apercibiere, y viniendo la espada lo hiriere, su sangre será sobre su cabeza. 5 El sonido de la trompeta oyó, y no se apercibió; su sangre será sobre él; mas el que se apercibiere librará su vida. 6 Pero si el atalaya viere venir la espada y no tocare la trompeta, y el pueblo no se apercibiere, y viniendo la espada, hiriere de él a alguno, este fue tomado por causa de su pecado, pero demandaré su sangre de mano del atalaya.
7 A ti, pues, hijo de hombre, te he puesto por atalaya a la casa de Israel, y oirás la palabra de mi boca, y los amonestarás de mi parte. 8 Cuando yo dijere al impío: Impío, de cierto morirás; si tú no hablares para que se guarde el impío de su camino, el impío morirá por su pecado, pero su sangre yo la demandaré de tu mano. 9 Y si tú avisares al impío de su camino para que se aparte de él, y él no se apartare de su camino, él morirá por su pecado, pero tú libraste tu vida.
El camino de Dios es justo

10 Tú, pues, hijo de hombre, di a la casa de Israel: Vosotros habéis hablado así, diciendo: Nuestras rebeliones y nuestros pecados están sobre nosotros, y a causa de ellos somos consumidos; ¿cómo, pues, viviremos? 11 Diles: Vivo yo, dice Jehová el Señor, que no quiero la muerte del impío, sino que se vuelva el impío de su camino, y que viva. Volveos, volveos de vuestros malos caminos; ¿por qué moriréis, oh casa de Israel? 12 Y tú, hijo de hombre, di a los hijos de tu pueblo: La justicia del justo no lo librará el día que se rebelare; y la impiedad del impío no le será estorbo el día que se volviere de su impiedad; y el justo no podrá vivir por su justicia el día que pecare. 13 Cuando yo dijere al justo: De cierto vivirás, y él confiado en su justicia hiciere iniquidad, todas sus justicias no serán recordadas, sino que morirá por su iniquidad que hizo. 14 Y cuando yo dijere al impío: De cierto morirás; si él se convirtiere de su pecado, e hiciere según el derecho y la justicia, 15 si el impío restituyere la prenda, devolviere lo que hubiere robado, y caminare en los estatutos de la vida, no haciendo iniquidad, vivirá ciertamente y no morirá. 16 No se le recordará ninguno de sus pecados que había cometido; hizo según el derecho y la justicia; vivirá ciertamente.
17 Luego dirán los hijos de tu pueblo: No es recto el camino del Señor; el camino de ellos es el que no es recto. 18 Cuando el justo se apartare de su justicia, e hiciere iniquidad, morirá por ello. 19 Y cuando el impío se apartare de su impiedad, e hiciere según el derecho y la justicia, vivirá por ello. 20 Y dijisteis: No es recto el camino del Señor. Yo os juzgaré, oh casa de Israel, a cada uno conforme a sus caminos.
Nuevas de la caída de Jerusalén
21 Aconteció en el año duodécimo de nuestro cautiverio, en el mes décimo, a los cinco días del mes, que vino a mí un fugitivo de Jerusalén, diciendo: La ciudad ha sido conquistada.(A) 22 Y la mano de Jehová había sido sobre mí la tarde antes de llegar el fugitivo, y había abierto mi boca, hasta que vino a mí por la mañana; y abrió mi boca, y ya no más estuve callado.
23 Y vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo: 24 Hijo de hombre, los que habitan aquellos lugares asolados en la tierra de Israel hablan diciendo: Abraham era uno, y poseyó la tierra; pues nosotros somos muchos; a nosotros nos es dada la tierra en posesión. 25 Por tanto, diles: Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: ¿Comeréis con sangre, y a vuestros ídolos alzaréis vuestros ojos, y derramaréis sangre, y poseeréis vosotros la tierra? 26 Estuvisteis sobre vuestras espadas, hicisteis abominación, y contaminasteis cada cual a la mujer de su prójimo; ¿y habréis de poseer la tierra? 27 Les dirás así: Así ha dicho Jehová el Señor: Vivo yo, que los que están en aquellos lugares asolados caerán a espada, y al que está sobre la faz del campo entregaré a las fieras para que lo devoren; y los que están en las fortalezas y en las cuevas, de pestilencia morirán. 28 Y convertiré la tierra en desierto y en soledad, y cesará la soberbia de su poderío; y los montes de Israel serán asolados hasta que no haya quien pase. 29 Y sabrán que yo soy Jehová, cuando convierta la tierra en soledad y desierto, por todas las abominaciones que han hecho.
30 Y tú, hijo de hombre, los hijos de tu pueblo se mofan de ti junto a las paredes y a las puertas de las casas, y habla el uno con el otro, cada uno con su hermano, diciendo: Venid ahora, y oíd qué palabra viene de Jehová. 31 Y vendrán a ti como viene el pueblo, y estarán delante de ti como pueblo mío, y oirán tus palabras, y no las pondrán por obra; antes hacen halagos con sus bocas, y el corazón de ellos anda en pos de su avaricia. 32 Y he aquí que tú eres a ellos como cantor de amores, hermoso de voz y que canta bien; y oirán tus palabras, pero no las pondrán por obra. 33 Pero cuando ello viniere (y viene ya), sabrán que hubo profeta entre ellos.

33 И было ко мне слово Господне:
2 сын человеческий! изреки слово к сынам народа твоего и скажи им: если Я на какую-либо землю наведу меч, и народ той земли возьмет из среды себя человека и поставит его у себя стражем;
3 и он, увидев меч, идущий на землю, затрубит в трубу и предостережет народ;
4 и если кто будет слушать голос трубы, но не остережет себя, --то, когда меч придет и захватит его, кровь его будет на его голове.
5 Голос трубы он слышал, но не остерег себя, кровь его на нем будет; а кто остерегся, тот спас жизнь свою.
6 Если же страж видел идущий меч и не затрубил в трубу, и народ не был предостережен, --то, когда придет меч и отнимет у кого из них жизнь, сей схвачен будет за грех свой, но кровь его взыщу от руки стража.
7 И тебя, сын человеческий, Я поставил стражем дому Израилеву, и ты будешь слышать из уст Моих слово и вразумлять их от Меня.
8 Когда Я скажу беззаконнику: 'беззаконник! ты смертью умрешь', а ты не будешь ничего говорить, чтобы предостеречь беззаконника от пути его, --то беззаконник тот умрет за грех свой, но кровь его взыщу от руки твоей.
9 Если же ты остерегал беззаконника от пути его, чтобы он обратился от него, но он от пути своего не обратился, --то он умирает за грех свой, а ты спас душу твою.
10 И ты, сын человеческий, скажи дому Израилеву: вы говорите так: 'преступления наши и грехи наши на нас, и мы истаеваем в них: как же можем мы жить?'
11 Скажи им: живу Я, говорит Господь Бог: не хочу смерти грешника, но чтобы грешник обратился от пути своего и жив был. Обратитесь, обратитесь от злых путей ваших; для чего умирать вам, дом Израилев?
12 И ты, сын человеческий, скажи сынам народа твоего: праведность праведника не спасет в день преступления его, и беззаконник за беззаконие свое не падет в день обращения от беззакония своего, равно как и праведник в день согрешения своего не может остаться в живых за свою праведность.
13 Когда Я скажу праведнику, что он будет жив, а он понадеется на свою праведность и сделает неправду, --то все праведные дела его не помянутся, и он умрет от неправды своей, какую сделал.
14 А когда скажу беззаконнику: 'ты смертью умрешь', и он обратится от грехов своих и будет творить суд и правду,
15 [если] этот беззаконник возвратит залог, за похищенное заплатит, будет ходить по законам жизни, не делая ничего худого, --то он будет жив, не умрет.
16 Ни один из грехов его, какие он сделал, не помянется ему; он стал творить суд и правду, он будет жив.
17 А сыны народа твоего говорят: 'неправ путь Господа', тогда как их путь неправ.
18 Когда праведник отступил от праведности своей и начал делать беззаконие, --то он умрет за то.
19 И когда беззаконник обратился от беззакония своего и стал творить суд и правду, он будет за то жив.
20 А вы говорите: 'неправ путь Господа!' Я буду судить вас, дом Израилев, каждого по путям его.
21 В двенадцатом году нашего переселения, в десятом [месяце], в пятый [день] месяца, пришел ко мне один из спасшихся из Иерусалима и сказал: 'разрушен город!'
22 Но еще до прихода сего спасшегося вечером была на мне рука Господа, и Он открыл мне уста, прежде нежели тот пришел ко мне поутру. И открылись уста мои, и я уже не был безмолвен.
23 И было ко мне слово Господне:
24 сын человеческий! живущие на опустелых местах в земле Израилевой говорят: 'Авраам был один, и получил во владение землю сию, а нас много; [итак] нам дана земля сия во владение'.
25 Посему скажи им: так говорит Господь Бог: вы едите с кровью и поднимаете глаза ваши к идолам вашим, и проливаете кровь; и хотите владеть землею?
26 Вы опираетесь на меч ваш, делаете мерзости, оскверняете один жену другого, и хотите владеть землею?
27 Вот что скажи им: так говорит Господь Бог: живу Я! те, которые на местах разоренных, падут от меча; а кто в поле, того отдам зверям на съедение; а которые в укреплениях и пещерах, те умрут от моровой язвы.
28 И сделаю землю пустынею из пустынь, и гордое могущество ее престанет, и горы Израилевы опустеют, так что не будет проходящих.
29 И узнают, что Я Господь, когда сделаю землю пустынею из пустынь за все мерзости их, какие они делали.
30 А о тебе, сын человеческий, сыны народа твоего разговаривают у стен и в дверях домов и говорят один другому, брат брату: 'пойдите и послушайте, какое слово вышло от Господа'.
31 И они приходят к тебе, как на народное сходбище, и садится перед лицем твоим народ Мой, и слушают слова твои, но не исполняют их; ибо они в устах своих делают из этого забаву, сердце их увлекается за корыстью их.
32 И вот, ты для них--как забавный певец с приятным голосом и хорошо играющий; они слушают слова твои, но не исполняют их.
33 Но когда сбудется, --вот, уже и сбывается, --тогда узнают, что среди них был пророк.
