Prophecy Against the Prince of Tyre

28 The word of the Lord came to me: (A)“Son of man, say to (B)the prince of Tyre, Thus says the Lord God:

(C)“Because your heart is proud,
    and (D)you have said, ‘I am a god,
I sit in the seat of the gods,
    in the heart of the seas,’
yet (E)you are but a man, and no god,
    (F)though you make your heart like the heart of a god—
(G)you are indeed wiser (H)than (I)Daniel;
    no secret is hidden from you;
by your wisdom and your understanding
    (J)you have made wealth for yourself,
and have gathered gold and silver
    into your treasuries;
by your great wisdom in your trade
    you have increased your wealth,
    and (K)your heart has become proud in your wealth—
therefore thus says the Lord God:
(L)Because you make your heart
    like the heart of a god,
therefore, behold, I will bring (M)foreigners upon you,
    the most ruthless of the nations;
and they shall draw their swords against (N)the beauty of your wisdom
    and defile (O)your splendor.
(P)They shall thrust you down into the pit,
    (Q)and you shall die the death of the slain
    in the heart of the seas.
(R)Will you still say, ‘I am a god,’
    in the presence of those who kill you,
though (S)you are but a man, and no god,
    in the hands of those who slay you?
10 (T)You shall die the death of the uncircumcised
    by the hand of foreigners;
    (U)for I have spoken, declares the Lord God.”

A Lament over the King of Tyre

11 Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me: 12 (V)“Son of man, (W)raise a lamentation over (X)the king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord God:

“You were the signet of perfection,[a]
    (Y)full of wisdom and (Z)perfect in beauty.
13 You were in (AA)Eden, the garden of God;
    (AB)every precious stone was your covering,
(AC)sardius, topaz, and diamond,
    beryl, onyx, and jasper,
sapphire,[b] (AD)emerald, and carbuncle;
    and crafted in gold were your settings
    and your engravings.[c]
(AE)On the day that you were created
    they were prepared.
14 You were an anointed (AF)guardian cherub.
    I placed you;[d] you were on (AG)the holy mountain of God;
    in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.
15 You were blameless in your ways
    (AH)from the day you were created,
    till unrighteousness was found in you.
16 In the abundance of (AI)your trade
    you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned;
so I cast you as a profane thing from (AJ)the mountain of God,
    and I destroyed you,[e] (AK)O guardian cherub,
    from the midst of the stones of fire.
17 (AL)Your heart was proud because of (AM)your beauty;
    you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground;
    I exposed you before kings,
    to feast their eyes on you.
18 By the multitude of your iniquities,
    in the unrighteousness of your trade
    you profaned your sanctuaries;
so (AN)I brought fire out from your midst;
    it consumed you,
and I turned you to ashes on the earth
    (AO)in the sight of all who saw you.
19 All who know you among the peoples
    are appalled at you;
(AP)you have come to a dreadful end
    and shall be no more forever.”

Prophecy Against Sidon

20 The word of the Lord came to me: 21 (AQ)“Son of man, (AR)set your face toward (AS)Sidon, and (AT)prophesy against her 22 and say, Thus says the Lord God:

“Behold, (AU)I am against you, O Sidon,
    and (AV)I will manifest my glory in your midst.
And (AW)they shall know that I am the Lord
    (AX)when I execute judgments in her
    and (AY)manifest my holiness in her;
23 for I will send (AZ)pestilence into her,
    and blood into her streets;
and the slain shall fall in her midst,
    by the sword that is against her on every side.
Then they will know that I am the Lord.

24 “And for the house of Israel (BA)there shall be no more a brier to prick or (BB)a thorn to hurt them among all their neighbors (BC)who have treated them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.

Israel Gathered in Security

25 “Thus says the Lord God: (BD)When I gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and (BE)manifest my holiness in them in the sight of the nations, (BF)then they shall dwell in their own land that I gave to my servant Jacob. 26 (BG)And they shall dwell securely in it, and they shall build houses and plant vineyards. They shall dwell securely, (BH)when I execute judgments upon all their neighbors (BI)who have treated them with contempt. (BJ)Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.”

Prophecy Against Egypt

29 (BK)In the tenth year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: (BL)“Son of man, (BM)set your face against (BN)Pharaoh king of Egypt, (BO)and prophesy against him and (BP)against all Egypt; speak, and say, Thus says the Lord God:

(BQ)“Behold, I am against you,
    Pharaoh king of Egypt,
(BR)the great dragon that lies
    in the midst of his streams,
(BS)that says, ‘My Nile is my own;
    I made it for myself.’
I will (BT)put hooks in your jaws,
    and make the fish of your streams stick to your scales;
and I will draw you up out of the midst of your streams,
    with all the fish of your streams
    that stick to your scales.
(BU)And I will cast you out into the wilderness,
    you and all the fish of your streams;
you shall fall (BV)on the open field,
    and (BW)not be brought together or gathered.
To the beasts of the earth and to the birds of the heavens
    (BX)I give you as food.

Then all the inhabitants of Egypt (BY)shall know that I am the Lord.

“Because you[f] have been (BZ)a staff of reed to the house of Israel, (CA)when they grasped you with the hand, you broke and tore all their shoulders; and when they leaned on you, you broke and made all their loins to shake.[g] Therefore thus says the Lord God: (CB)Behold, I will bring a sword upon you, and will cut off from you man and beast, and the land of Egypt shall be a desolation and a waste. (CC)Then they will know that I am the Lord.

(CD)“Because you[h] said, ‘The Nile is mine, and I made it,’ 10 therefore, (CE)behold, I am against you and (CF)against your streams, and (CG)I will make the land of Egypt an utter waste and desolation, (CH)from Migdol to Syene, as far as the border of Cush. 11 (CI)No foot of man shall pass through it, and no foot of beast shall pass through it; it shall be uninhabited forty years. 12 (CJ)And I will make the land of Egypt a desolation in the midst of desolated countries, and her cities shall be a desolation forty years among cities that are laid waste. (CK)I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and disperse them through the countries.

13 “For thus says the Lord God: At the end of forty years (CL)I will gather the Egyptians from the peoples among whom they were scattered, 14 and (CM)I will restore the fortunes of Egypt and bring them back to (CN)the land of Pathros, the land of their origin, and there they shall be a lowly kingdom. 15 It shall be the most lowly of the kingdoms, (CO)and never again exalt itself above the nations. And I will make them so small that they will never again rule over the nations. 16 And it shall never again be (CP)the reliance of the house of Israel, recalling their iniquity, when they turn to them for aid. (CQ)Then they will know that I am the Lord God.”

17 (CR)In the twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 18 (CS)“Son of man, (CT)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made his army labor hard against Tyre. Every head was made bald, and every shoulder was rubbed bare, yet neither he nor his army got anything from Tyre to pay for the labor that he had performed against her. 19 Therefore thus says the Lord God: (CU)Behold, I will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; (CV)and he shall carry off its wealth[i] (CW)and despoil it and plunder it; and it shall be the wages for his army. 20 (CX)I have given him the land of Egypt as his payment for which he labored, because they worked for me, declares the Lord God.

21 “On that day (CY)I will cause a horn to spring up for the house of Israel, and (CZ)I will open your lips among them. (DA)Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

A Lament for Egypt

30 The word of the Lord came to me: (DB)“Son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus says the Lord God:

(DC)“Wail, ‘Alas for the day!’
    (DD)For the day is near,
    (DE)the day of the Lord is near;
it will be (DF)a day of clouds,
    a time of doom for[j] the nations.
(DG)A sword shall come upon Egypt,
    (DH)and anguish shall be in (DI)Cush,
when the slain fall in Egypt,
    and (DJ)her wealth[k] is carried away,
    and (DK)her foundations are torn down.

(DL)Cush, and (DM)Put, and Lud, and (DN)all Arabia, and Libya,[l] and the people of the land that is in league,[m] shall fall with them by the sword.

“Thus says the Lord:
(DO)Those who support Egypt shall fall,
    and (DP)her proud might shall come down;
(DQ)from Migdol to Syene
    they shall fall within her by the sword,
declares the Lord God.
(DR)And they shall be desolated in the midst of desolated countries,
    and their cities shall be in the midst of cities that are laid waste.
(DS)Then they will know that I am the Lord,
    when (DT)I have set fire to Egypt,
    and (DU)all her helpers are broken.

“On that day (DV)messengers shall go out from me in ships to terrify the unsuspecting (DW)people of Cush, and (DX)anguish shall come upon them on the day of Egypt's doom;[n] for, behold, it comes!

10 “Thus says the Lord God:

(DY)“I will put an end to the wealth of Egypt,
    by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
11 He and his people with him, (DZ)the most ruthless of nations,
    shall be brought in to destroy the land,
(EA)and they shall draw their swords against Egypt
    and fill the land with the slain.
12 And (EB)I will (EC)dry up the Nile
    and will sell the land into the hand of (ED)evildoers;
(EE)I will bring desolation upon the land and everything in it,
    by the hand of (EF)foreigners;
(EG)I am the Lord; I have spoken.

13 “Thus says the Lord God:

(EH)“I will destroy the idols
    and put an end to the images in (EI)Memphis;
(EJ)there shall no longer be a prince from the land of Egypt;
    so (EK)I will put fear in the land of Egypt.
14 I will make (EL)Pathros a desolation
    and will set fire to (EM)Zoan
    (EN)and will execute judgments on (EO)Thebes.
15 And I will pour out my wrath on Pelusium,
    the stronghold of Egypt,
    and cut off the multitude[o] of Thebes.
16 And I will set fire to Egypt;
    Pelusium shall be in great agony;
Thebes shall be breached,
    and (EP)Memphis shall face enemies[p] by day.
17 The young men of On and of Pi-beseth shall fall by the sword,
    and the women[q] shall go into captivity.
18 At (EQ)Tehaphnehes (ER)the day shall be dark,
    when I break there the yoke bars of Egypt,
and (ES)her proud might shall come to an end in her;
    she shall be covered by a cloud,
    and her daughters shall go into captivity.
19 Thus (ET)I will execute judgments on Egypt.
    (EU)Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Egypt Shall Fall to Babylon

20 (EV)In the eleventh year, in the first month, on the seventh day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 21 (EW)“Son of man, (EX)I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and behold, (EY)it has not been bound up, to heal it by binding it with a bandage, so that it may become strong to wield the sword. 22 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt and (EZ)will break his arms, both the strong arm and the one that was broken, and I will make the sword fall from his hand. 23 (FA)I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them through the countries. 24 And (FB)I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon and put (FC)my sword in his hand, but I will break the arms of Pharaoh, and he will groan before him (FD)like a man mortally wounded. 25 I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh shall fall. (FE)Then they shall know that I am the Lord, (FF)when I put my sword into the hand of the king of Babylon and he stretches it out against the land of Egypt. 26 And I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them throughout the countries. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Pharaoh to Be Slain

31 (FG)In the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: (FH)“Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to (FI)his multitude:

(FJ)“Whom are you like in your greatness?
    Behold, (FK)Assyria was a (FL)cedar in (FM)Lebanon,
with beautiful branches and (FN)forest shade,
    (FO)and of towering height,
    its top among the clouds.[r]
The waters nourished it;
    the deep made it grow tall,
making (FP)its rivers flow
    around the place of its planting,
sending forth its streams
    to all the trees of the field.
So (FQ)it towered high
    above all the trees of the field;
its boughs grew large
    and its branches long
    from (FR)abundant water in its shoots.
(FS)All the birds of the heavens
    made their nests in its boughs;
under its branches all the beasts of the field
    gave birth to their young,
and under its shadow
    lived all great nations.
It was (FT)beautiful in its greatness,
    in the length of its branches;
(FU)for its roots went down
    to abundant waters.
(FV)The cedars (FW)in the garden of God could not rival it,
    nor the fir trees equal its boughs;
neither were the plane trees
    like its branches;
no tree (FX)in the garden of God
    was its equal in beauty.
I made it beautiful
    in the mass of its branches,
and all the trees of (FY)Eden envied it,
    that were in the garden of God.

10 “Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because (FZ)it[s] towered high and set its top among the clouds,[t] and (GA)its heart was proud of its height, 11 I will give it into the hand of a mighty one of the nations. He shall surely deal with it as its wickedness deserves. I have cast it out. 12 (GB)Foreigners, (GC)the most ruthless of nations, have cut it down and left it. (GD)On the mountains and in all the valleys its branches have fallen, and its boughs have been broken in all (GE)the ravines of the land, and (GF)all the peoples of the earth have gone away from its shadow and left it. 13 (GG)On its fallen trunk dwell all the birds of the heavens, and on its branches are all the beasts of the field. 14 (GH)All this is in order that no trees by the waters may grow to towering height or set their tops among the clouds,[u] and that no trees that drink water may reach up to them in height. For they are all given over to death, (GI)to the world (GJ)below, among the children of man,[v] with those who go down to the pit.

15 “Thus says the Lord God: On the day (GK)the cedar[w] went down to Sheol I caused mourning; I closed the deep over it, and restrained its rivers, and many waters were stopped. I clothed Lebanon in gloom for it, and all the trees of the field fainted because of it. 16 (GL)I made the nations quake at the sound of its fall, (GM)when I cast it down to Sheol with those who go down to the pit. (GN)And all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, (GO)were comforted in the world below. 17 They also went down to Sheol with it, (GP)to those who are slain by the sword; yes, (GQ)those who were its arm, (GR)who lived under its shadow among the nations.

18 (GS)“Whom are you thus like in glory and in greatness (GT)among the trees of Eden? (GU)You shall be brought down with (GV)the trees of Eden to the world below. (GW)You shall lie among the uncircumcised, (GX)with those who are slain by the sword.

(GY)“This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord God.”

A Lament over Pharaoh and Egypt

32 (GZ)In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: (HA)“Son of man, (HB)raise a lamentation over (HC)Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him:

“You consider yourself (HD)a lion of the nations,
    but you are like (HE)a dragon (HF)in the seas;
(HG)you burst forth in your rivers,
    trouble the waters with your feet,
    and foul their rivers.
Thus says the Lord God:
    (HH)I will throw my net over you
    with a host of (HI)many peoples,
    and (HJ)they will haul you up in my dragnet.
And (HK)I will cast you on the ground;
    on the open field I will fling you,
and will cause all the birds of the heavens to settle on you,
    and I will gorge the beasts of the whole earth with you.
I will strew your flesh (HL)upon the mountains
    and fill the valleys with your carcass.[x]
I will drench the land even to the mountains
    with your flowing blood,
    and the ravines will be full of you.
(HM)When I blot you out, (HN)I will cover the heavens
    and make their stars dark;
I will cover the sun with a cloud,
    and the moon shall not give its light.
All the bright lights of heaven
    will I make dark over you,
    and (HO)put darkness on your land,
declares the Lord God.

“I will trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring your destruction among the nations, into the countries that you have not known. 10 (HP)I will make many peoples appalled at you, and the hair of their kings shall bristle with horror because of you, when (HQ)I brandish my sword before them. (HR)They shall tremble every moment, every one for his own life, on the day of your downfall.

11 “For thus says the Lord God: (HS)The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon you. 12 I will cause (HT)your multitude to fall by the swords of mighty ones, all of them (HU)most ruthless of nations.

(HV)“They shall bring to ruin the pride of Egypt,
    and all its multitude[y] shall perish.
13 I will destroy all its beasts
    from beside many waters;
(HW)and no foot of man shall trouble them anymore,
    nor shall the hoofs of beasts trouble them.
14 Then (HX)I will make their waters clear,
    and cause their rivers to run like oil,
declares the Lord God.
15 When I make the land of Egypt desolate,
    and when the land (HY)is desolate of all that fills it,
when I strike down all who dwell in it,
    then (HZ)they will know that I am the Lord.

16 (IA)This is a lamentation that shall be chanted; the daughters of the nations shall chant it; over Egypt, and over (IB)all her multitude, shall they chant it, declares the Lord God.”

17 (IC)In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month,[z] on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 18 (ID)“Son of man, (IE)wail over (IF)the multitude of Egypt, and (IG)send them down, her and the daughters of majestic nations, (IH)to the world below, to those who have gone down to the pit:

19 (II)‘Whom do you surpass in beauty?
    Go down and (IJ)be laid to rest with the uncircumcised.’

20 They shall fall amid those (IK)who are slain by the sword. Egypt[aa] is delivered to the sword; drag her away, and (IL)all her multitudes. 21 The mighty chiefs (IM)shall speak of them, (IN)with their helpers, out of the midst of Sheol: ‘They have come down, they lie still, (IO)the uncircumcised, (IP)slain by the sword.’

22 (IQ)“Assyria is there, and all her company, (IR)its graves all around it, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, 23 whose graves are set in (IS)the uttermost parts of the pit; and her company is all around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, (IT)who spread terror (IU)in the land of the living.

24 (IV)“Elam is (IW)there, and all her multitude around her grave; all of them (IX)slain, fallen by the sword, who went down uncircumcised into (IY)the world below, who spread their terror in the land of the living; and (IZ)they bear their shame (JA)with those who go down to the pit. 25 (JB)They have made her a bed among the slain with all her multitude, (JC)her graves all around it, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for terror of them was spread in the land of the living, and they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit; they are placed among the slain.

26 (JD)“Meshech-Tubal is (JE)there, and all her multitude, (JF)her graves all around it, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for they spread their terror in the land of the living. 27 And (JG)they do not lie with the mighty, the fallen from among the uncircumcised, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war, whose swords were laid under their heads, and whose iniquities are upon their bones; for the terror of the mighty men was in the land of the living. 28 But as for you, you shall be broken (JH)and lie among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword.

29 (JI)“Edom is (JJ)there, her kings and all her princes, who for all their might are laid with those who are killed by the sword; they lie with the uncircumcised, with those who go down to the pit.

30 “The princes (JK)of the north are there, all of them, and all the (JL)Sidonians, who have gone down in shame with the slain, (JM)for all the terror that they caused by their might; they lie uncircumcised with those who are slain by the sword, and (JN)bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.

31 “When Pharaoh sees them, he (JO)will be comforted for (JP)all his multitude, Pharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword, declares the Lord God. 32 (JQ)For I spread terror (JR)in the land of the living; and he shall be laid to rest among (JS)the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword, Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord God.”

Ezekiel Is Israel's Watchman

33 The word of the Lord came to me: (JT)“Son of man, speak to (JU)your people and say to them, If (JV)I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and make him their (JW)watchman, and if he sees the sword coming upon the land and (JX)blows the trumpet and warns the people, then if anyone who hears the sound of the trumpet does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, (JY)his blood shall be upon his own head. (JZ)He heard the sound of the trumpet and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But if he had taken warning, he would have saved his life. (KA)But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, (KB)that person is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman's hand.

(KC)“So you, (KD)son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. (KE)Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. (KF)If I say to the wicked, O wicked one, you shall surely die, (KG)and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, (KH)that wicked person shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. (KI)But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, (KJ)that person shall die in his iniquity, (KK)but you will have delivered your soul.

Why Will You Die, Israel?

10 “And you, (KL)son of man, say to the house of Israel, Thus have you said: ‘Surely our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and (KM)we rot away because of them. (KN)How then can we live?’ 11 Say to them, (KO)As I live, declares the Lord God, (KP)I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; (KQ)turn back, turn back from your evil ways, (KR)for why will you die, O house of Israel?

12 (KS)“And you, son of man, say to (KT)your people, (KU)The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him when he transgresses, (KV)and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall by it when he turns from his wickedness, (KW)and the righteous shall not be able to live by his righteousness[ab] when he sins. 13 Though I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, yet (KX)if he trusts in his righteousness and does injustice, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered, but in his injustice that he has done he shall die. 14 Again, (KY)though I say to the wicked, (KZ)‘You shall surely die,’ yet (LA)if he turns from his sin and does what is just and right, 15 if the wicked (LB)restores the pledge, (LC)gives back what he has taken by robbery, and walks (LD)in the statutes of life, not doing injustice, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 16 (LE)None of the sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him. He has done what is just and right; he shall surely live.

17 “Yet (LF)your people say, (LG)‘The way of the Lord is not just,’ when it is their own way that is not just. 18 (LH)When the righteous turns from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it. 19 And (LI)when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does what is just and right, he shall live by this. 20 Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, (LJ)I will judge each of you according to his ways.”

Jerusalem Struck Down

21 In the (LK)twelfth year (LL)of our exile, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month, (LM)a fugitive from Jerusalem came to me and said, (LN)“The city has been struck down.” 22 (LO)Now (LP)the hand of the Lord had been upon me the evening before the fugitive came; and he had opened my mouth by the time the man came to me in the morning, so my mouth was opened, and I was no longer mute.

23 The word of the Lord came to me: 24 (LQ)“Son of man, the inhabitants of these (LR)waste places in the land of Israel keep saying, (LS)‘Abraham was only one man, yet he got possession of the land; but (LT)we are many; the land is surely given us to possess.’ 25 Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord God: (LU)You eat flesh with the blood and (LV)lift up your eyes to your idols and (LW)shed blood; shall you then possess the land? 26 (LX)You rely on the sword, (LY)you commit abominations, and (LZ)each of you defiles his neighbor's wife; shall you then possess the land? 27 Say this to them, Thus says the Lord God: (MA)As I live, surely those who are in (MB)the waste places shall fall by (MC)the sword, and whoever is in the open field I will give to (MD)the beasts to be devoured, and those who are in (ME)strongholds and in caves shall die by (MF)pestilence. 28 (MG)And I will make the land a desolation and a waste, and (MH)her proud might shall come to an end, and (MI)the mountains of Israel shall be so desolate that none will pass through. 29 (MJ)Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I have made the land a desolation and a waste because of all their abominations that they have committed.

30 “As for you, (MK)son of man, (ML)your people who talk together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, say to one another, each to his brother, ‘Come, and hear what the word is that comes from the Lord.’ 31 (MM)And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear what you say but they will not do it; for (MN)with lustful talk in their mouths they act; their heart is set on their gain. 32 And behold, you are to them like one who sings lustful songs with a beautiful voice and (MO)plays[ac] well on an instrument, for (MP)they hear what you say, but they will not do it. 33 (MQ)When this comes—and come it will!—(MR)then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”

A Prophecy Against the King of Tyre

28 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man(A), say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘In the pride of your heart
    you say, “I am a god;
I sit on the throne(B) of a god
    in the heart of the seas.”(C)
But you are a mere mortal and not a god,
    though you think you are as wise as a god.(D)
Are you wiser than Daniel[a]?(E)
    Is no secret hidden from you?
By your wisdom and understanding
    you have gained wealth for yourself
and amassed gold and silver
    in your treasuries.(F)
By your great skill in trading(G)
    you have increased your wealth,(H)
and because of your wealth
    your heart has grown proud.(I)

“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘Because you think you are wise,
    as wise as a god,
I am going to bring foreigners against you,
    the most ruthless of nations;(J)
they will draw their swords against your beauty and wisdom(K)
    and pierce your shining splendor.(L)
They will bring you down to the pit,(M)
    and you will die a violent death(N)
    in the heart of the seas.(O)
Will you then say, “I am a god,”
    in the presence of those who kill you?
You will be but a mortal, not a god,(P)
    in the hands of those who slay you.(Q)
10 You will die the death of the uncircumcised(R)
    at the hands of foreigners.

I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”

11 The word of the Lord came to me: 12 “Son of man, take up a lament(S) concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘You were the seal of perfection,
    full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.(T)
13 You were in Eden,(U)
    the garden of God;(V)
every precious stone(W) adorned you:
    carnelian, chrysolite and emerald,
    topaz, onyx and jasper,
    lapis lazuli, turquoise(X) and beryl.[b]
Your settings and mountings[c] were made of gold;
    on the day you were created they were prepared.(Y)
14 You were anointed(Z) as a guardian cherub,(AA)
    for so I ordained you.
You were on the holy mount of God;
    you walked among the fiery stones.
15 You were blameless in your ways
    from the day you were created
    till wickedness was found in you.
16 Through your widespread trade
    you were filled with violence,(AB)
    and you sinned.
So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God,
    and I expelled you, guardian cherub,(AC)
    from among the fiery stones.
17 Your heart became proud(AD)
    on account of your beauty,
and you corrupted your wisdom
    because of your splendor.
So I threw you to the earth;
    I made a spectacle of you before kings.(AE)
18 By your many sins and dishonest trade
    you have desecrated your sanctuaries.
So I made a fire(AF) come out from you,
    and it consumed you,
and I reduced you to ashes(AG) on the ground
    in the sight of all who were watching.(AH)
19 All the nations who knew you
    are appalled(AI) at you;
you have come to a horrible end
    and will be no more.(AJ)’”

A Prophecy Against Sidon

20 The word of the Lord came to me: 21 “Son of man, set your face against(AK) Sidon;(AL) prophesy against her 22 and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘I am against you, Sidon,
    and among you I will display my glory.(AM)
You will know that I am the Lord,
    when I inflict punishment(AN) on you
    and within you am proved to be holy.(AO)
23 I will send a plague upon you
    and make blood flow in your streets.
The slain will fall within you,
    with the sword against you on every side.
Then you will know that I am the Lord.(AP)

24 “‘No longer will the people of Israel have malicious neighbors who are painful briers and sharp thorns.(AQ) Then they will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.

25 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When I gather(AR) the people of Israel from the nations where they have been scattered,(AS) I will be proved holy(AT) through them in the sight of the nations. Then they will live in their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob.(AU) 26 They will live there in safety(AV) and will build houses and plant(AW) vineyards; they will live in safety when I inflict punishment(AX) on all their neighbors who maligned them. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.(AY)’”

A Prophecy Against Egypt

Judgment on Pharaoh

29 In the tenth year, in the tenth month on the twelfth day, the word of the Lord came to me:(AZ) “Son of man, set your face against(BA) Pharaoh king of Egypt(BB) and prophesy against him and against all Egypt.(BC) Speak to him and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘I am against you, Pharaoh(BD) king of Egypt,
    you great monster(BE) lying among your streams.
You say, “The Nile(BF) belongs to me;
    I made it for myself.”
But I will put hooks(BG) in your jaws
    and make the fish of your streams stick to your scales.
I will pull you out from among your streams,
    with all the fish sticking to your scales.(BH)
I will leave you in the desert,
    you and all the fish of your streams.
You will fall on the open field
    and not be gathered(BI) or picked up.
I will give you as food
    to the beasts of the earth and the birds of the sky.(BJ)

Then all who live in Egypt will know that I am the Lord.

“‘You have been a staff of reed(BK) for the people of Israel. When they grasped you with their hands, you splintered(BL) and you tore open their shoulders; when they leaned on you, you broke and their backs were wrenched.[d](BM)

“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will bring a sword against you and kill both man and beast.(BN) Egypt will become a desolate wasteland. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

“‘Because you said, “The Nile(BO) is mine; I made it,(BP) 10 therefore I am against you(BQ) and against your streams, and I will make the land of Egypt(BR) a ruin and a desolate waste(BS) from Migdol(BT) to Aswan,(BU) as far as the border of Cush.[e](BV) 11 The foot of neither man nor beast will pass through it; no one will live there for forty years.(BW) 12 I will make the land of Egypt desolate(BX) among devastated lands, and her cities will lie desolate forty years among ruined cities. And I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them through the countries.(BY)

13 “‘Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says: At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the nations where they were scattered. 14 I will bring them back from captivity and return them to Upper Egypt,(BZ) the land of their ancestry. There they will be a lowly(CA) kingdom.(CB) 15 It will be the lowliest of kingdoms and will never again exalt itself above the other nations.(CC) I will make it so weak that it will never again rule over the nations. 16 Egypt will no longer be a source of confidence(CD) for the people of Israel but will be a reminder(CE) of their sin in turning to her for help.(CF) Then they will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.(CG)’”

Nebuchadnezzar’s Reward

17 In the twenty-seventh year, in the first month on the first day, the word of the Lord came to me:(CH) 18 “Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar(CI) king of Babylon drove his army in a hard campaign against Tyre; every head was rubbed bare(CJ) and every shoulder made raw.(CK) Yet he and his army got no reward from the campaign he led against Tyre. 19 Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am going to give Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king(CL) of Babylon, and he will carry off its wealth. He will loot and plunder(CM) the land as pay for his army.(CN) 20 I have given him Egypt(CO) as a reward for his efforts because he and his army did it for me, declares the Sovereign Lord.(CP)

21 “On that day I will make a horn[f](CQ) grow for the Israelites, and I will open your mouth(CR) among them. Then they will know that I am the Lord.(CS)

A Lament Over Egypt

30 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, prophesy and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘Wail(CT) and say,
    “Alas for that day!”
For the day is near,(CU)
    the day of the Lord(CV) is near—
a day of clouds,
    a time of doom for the nations.
A sword will come against Egypt,(CW)
    and anguish will come upon Cush.[g](CX)
When the slain fall in Egypt,
    her wealth will be carried away
    and her foundations torn down.(CY)

Cush and Libya,(CZ) Lydia and all Arabia,(DA) Kub and the people(DB) of the covenant land will fall by the sword along with Egypt.(DC)

“‘This is what the Lord says:

“‘The allies of Egypt will fall
    and her proud strength will fail.
From Migdol to Aswan(DD)
    they will fall by the sword within her,
declares the Sovereign Lord.
“‘They will be desolate
    among desolate lands,
and their cities will lie
    among ruined cities.(DE)
Then they will know that I am the Lord,
    when I set fire(DF) to Egypt
    and all her helpers are crushed.(DG)

“‘On that day messengers will go out from me in ships to frighten Cush(DH) out of her complacency. Anguish(DI) will take hold of them on the day of Egypt’s doom, for it is sure to come.(DJ)

10 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘I will put an end to the hordes of Egypt
    by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar(DK) king of Babylon.(DL)
11 He and his army—the most ruthless of nations(DM)
    will be brought in to destroy the land.
They will draw their swords against Egypt
    and fill the land with the slain.(DN)
12 I will dry up(DO) the waters of the Nile(DP)
    and sell the land to an evil nation;
by the hand of foreigners
    I will lay waste(DQ) the land and everything in it.

I the Lord have spoken.

13 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘I will destroy the idols(DR)
    and put an end to the images in Memphis.(DS)
No longer will there be a prince in Egypt,(DT)
    and I will spread fear throughout the land.
14 I will lay(DU) waste Upper Egypt,
    set fire to Zoan(DV)
    and inflict punishment on Thebes.(DW)
15 I will pour out my wrath on Pelusium,
    the stronghold of Egypt,
    and wipe out the hordes of Thebes.
16 I will set fire(DX) to Egypt;
    Pelusium will writhe in agony.
Thebes will be taken by storm;
    Memphis(DY) will be in constant distress.
17 The young men of Heliopolis(DZ) and Bubastis
    will fall by the sword,
    and the cities themselves will go into captivity.
18 Dark will be the day at Tahpanhes(EA)
    when I break the yoke of Egypt;(EB)
    there her proud strength will come to an end.
She will be covered with clouds,
    and her villages will go into captivity.(EC)
19 So I will inflict punishment(ED) on Egypt,
    and they will know that I am the Lord.’”

Pharaoh’s Arms Are Broken

20 In the eleventh year, in the first month on the seventh day, the word of the Lord came to me:(EE) 21 “Son of man, I have broken the arm(EF) of Pharaoh(EG) king of Egypt. It has not been bound up to be healed(EH) or put in a splint so that it may become strong enough to hold a sword. 22 Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt.(EI) I will break both his arms, the good arm as well as the broken one, and make the sword fall from his hand.(EJ) 23 I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them through the countries.(EK) 24 I will strengthen(EL) the arms of the king of Babylon and put my sword(EM) in his hand, but I will break the arms of Pharaoh, and he will groan(EN) before him like a mortally wounded man. 25 I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh will fall limp. Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I put my sword(EO) into the hand of the king of Babylon and he brandishes it against Egypt.(EP) 26 I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them through the countries. Then they will know that I am the Lord.(EQ)

Pharaoh as a Felled Cedar of Lebanon

31 In the eleventh year,(ER) in the third month on the first day, the word of the Lord came to me:(ES) “Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his hordes:

“‘Who can be compared with you in majesty?
Consider Assyria,(ET) once a cedar in Lebanon,(EU)
    with beautiful branches overshadowing the forest;
it towered on high,
    its top above the thick foliage.(EV)
The waters(EW) nourished it,
    deep springs made it grow tall;
their streams flowed
    all around its base
and sent their channels
    to all the trees of the field.(EX)
So it towered higher(EY)
    than all the trees of the field;
its boughs increased
    and its branches grew long,
    spreading because of abundant waters.(EZ)
All the birds of the sky
    nested in its boughs,
all the animals of the wild
    gave birth(FA) under its branches;
all the great nations
    lived in its shade.(FB)
It was majestic in beauty,
    with its spreading boughs,
for its roots went down
    to abundant waters.(FC)
The cedars(FD) in the garden of God
    could not rival it,
nor could the junipers
    equal its boughs,
nor could the plane trees(FE)
    compare with its branches—
no tree in the garden of God
    could match its beauty.(FF)
I made it beautiful
    with abundant branches,
the envy of all the trees of Eden(FG)
    in the garden of God.(FH)

10 “‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because the great cedar towered over the thick foliage, and because it was proud(FI) of its height, 11 I gave it into the hands of the ruler of the nations, for him to deal with according to its wickedness. I cast it aside,(FJ) 12 and the most ruthless of foreign nations(FK) cut it down and left it. Its boughs fell on the mountains and in all the valleys;(FL) its branches lay broken in all the ravines of the land. All the nations of the earth came out from under its shade and left it.(FM) 13 All the birds settled on the fallen tree, and all the wild animals lived among its branches.(FN) 14 Therefore no other trees by the waters are ever to tower proudly on high, lifting their tops above the thick foliage. No other trees so well-watered are ever to reach such a height; they are all destined(FO) for death,(FP) for the earth below, among mortals who go down to the realm of the dead.(FQ)

15 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day it was brought down to the realm of the dead I covered the deep springs with mourning for it; I held back its streams, and its abundant waters were restrained. Because of it I clothed Lebanon with gloom, and all the trees of the field withered away.(FR) 16 I made the nations tremble(FS) at the sound of its fall when I brought it down to the realm of the dead to be with those who go down to the pit. Then all the trees(FT) of Eden,(FU) the choicest and best of Lebanon, the well-watered trees, were consoled(FV) in the earth below.(FW) 17 They too, like the great cedar, had gone down to the realm of the dead, to those killed by the sword,(FX) along with the armed men who lived in its shade among the nations.

18 “‘Which of the trees of Eden can be compared with you in splendor and majesty? Yet you, too, will be brought down with the trees of Eden to the earth below; you will lie among the uncircumcised,(FY) with those killed by the sword.

“‘This is Pharaoh and all his hordes, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”

A Lament Over Pharaoh

32 In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month on the first day, the word of the Lord came to me:(FZ) “Son of man, take up a lament(GA) concerning Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him:

“‘You are like a lion(GB) among the nations;
    you are like a monster(GC) in the seas(GD)
thrashing about in your streams,
    churning the water with your feet
    and muddying the streams.(GE)

“‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘With a great throng of people
    I will cast my net over you,
    and they will haul you up in my net.(GF)
I will throw you on the land
    and hurl you on the open field.
I will let all the birds of the sky settle on you
    and all the animals of the wild gorge themselves on you.(GG)
I will spread your flesh on the mountains
    and fill the valleys(GH) with your remains.
I will drench the land with your flowing blood(GI)
    all the way to the mountains,
    and the ravines will be filled with your flesh.(GJ)
When I snuff you out, I will cover the heavens
    and darken their stars;
I will cover the sun with a cloud,
    and the moon will not give its light.(GK)
All the shining lights in the heavens
    I will darken(GL) over you;
    I will bring darkness over your land,(GM)
declares the Sovereign Lord.
I will trouble the hearts of many peoples
    when I bring about your destruction among the nations,
    among[h] lands you have not known.
10 I will cause many peoples to be appalled at you,
    and their kings will shudder with horror because of you
    when I brandish my sword(GN) before them.
On the day(GO) of your downfall
    each of them will tremble
    every moment for his life.(GP)

11 “‘For this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘The sword(GQ) of the king of Babylon(GR)
    will come against you.(GS)
12 I will cause your hordes to fall
    by the swords of mighty men—
    the most ruthless of all nations.(GT)
They will shatter the pride of Egypt,
    and all her hordes will be overthrown.(GU)
13 I will destroy all her cattle
    from beside abundant waters
no longer to be stirred by the foot of man
    or muddied by the hooves of cattle.(GV)
14 Then I will let her waters settle
    and make her streams flow like oil,
declares the Sovereign Lord.
15 When I make Egypt desolate
    and strip the land of everything in it,
when I strike down all who live there,
    then they will know that I am the Lord.(GW)

16 “This is the lament(GX) they will chant for her. The daughters of the nations will chant it; for Egypt and all her hordes they will chant it, declares the Sovereign Lord.”

Egypt’s Descent Into the Realm of the Dead

17 In the twelfth year, on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me:(GY) 18 “Son of man, wail for the hordes of Egypt and consign(GZ) to the earth below both her and the daughters of mighty nations, along with those who go down to the pit.(HA) 19 Say to them, ‘Are you more favored than others? Go down and be laid among the uncircumcised.’(HB) 20 They will fall among those killed by the sword. The sword is drawn; let her be dragged(HC) off with all her hordes.(HD) 21 From within the realm of the dead(HE) the mighty leaders will say of Egypt and her allies, ‘They have come down and they lie with the uncircumcised,(HF) with those killed by the sword.’

22 “Assyria is there with her whole army; she is surrounded by the graves of all her slain, all who have fallen by the sword. 23 Their graves are in the depths of the pit(HG) and her army lies around her grave.(HH) All who had spread terror in the land of the living are slain, fallen by the sword.

24 “Elam(HI) is there, with all her hordes around her grave. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword.(HJ) All who had spread terror in the land of the living(HK) went down uncircumcised to the earth below. They bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.(HL) 25 A bed is made for her among the slain, with all her hordes around her grave. All of them are uncircumcised,(HM) killed by the sword. Because their terror had spread in the land of the living, they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit; they are laid among the slain.

26 “Meshek and Tubal(HN) are there, with all their hordes around their graves. All of them are uncircumcised, killed by the sword because they spread their terror in the land of the living. 27 But they do not lie with the fallen warriors of old,[i](HO) who went down to the realm of the dead with their weapons of war—their swords placed under their heads and their shields[j] resting on their bones—though these warriors also had terrorized the land of the living.

28 “You too, Pharaoh, will be broken and will lie among the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword.

29 “Edom(HP) is there, her kings and all her princes; despite their power, they are laid with those killed by the sword. They lie with the uncircumcised, with those who go down to the pit.(HQ)

30 “All the princes of the north(HR) and all the Sidonians(HS) are there; they went down with the slain in disgrace despite the terror caused by their power. They lie uncircumcised(HT) with those killed by the sword and bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.(HU)

31 “Pharaoh—he and all his army—will see them and he will be consoled(HV) for all his hordes that were killed by the sword, declares the Sovereign Lord. 32 Although I had him spread terror in the land of the living, Pharaoh(HW) and all his hordes will be laid among the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword, declares the Sovereign Lord.”(HX)

Renewal of Ezekiel’s Call as Watchman

33 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, speak to your people and say to them: ‘When I bring the sword(HY) against a land, and the people of the land choose one of their men and make him their watchman,(HZ) and he sees the sword coming against the land and blows the trumpet(IA) to warn the people, then if anyone hears the trumpet but does not heed the warning(IB) and the sword comes and takes their life, their blood will be on their own head.(IC) Since they heard the sound of the trumpet but did not heed the warning, their blood will be on their own head.(ID) If they had heeded the warning, they would have saved themselves.(IE) But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes someone’s life, that person’s life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.’(IF)

“Son of man, I have made you a watchman(IG) for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.(IH) When I say to the wicked, ‘You wicked person, you will surely die,(II)’ and you do not speak out to dissuade them from their ways, that wicked person will die for[k] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.(IJ) But if you do warn the wicked person to turn from their ways and they do not do so,(IK) they will die for their sin, though you yourself will be saved.(IL)

10 “Son of man, say to the Israelites, ‘This is what you are saying: “Our offenses and sins weigh us down, and we are wasting away(IM) because of[l] them. How then can we live?(IN)”’ 11 Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live.(IO) Turn!(IP) Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, people of Israel?’(IQ)

12 “Therefore, son of man, say to your people,(IR) ‘If someone who is righteous disobeys, that person’s former righteousness will count for nothing. And if someone who is wicked repents, that person’s former wickedness will not bring condemnation. The righteous person who sins will not be allowed to live even though they were formerly righteous.’(IS) 13 If I tell a righteous person that they will surely live, but then they trust in their righteousness and do evil, none of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered; they will die for the evil they have done.(IT) 14 And if I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ but they then turn away from their sin and do what is just(IU) and right— 15 if they give back what they took in pledge(IV) for a loan, return what they have stolen,(IW) follow the decrees that give life, and do no evil—that person will surely live; they will not die.(IX) 16 None of the sins(IY) that person has committed will be remembered against them. They have done what is just and right; they will surely live.(IZ)

17 “Yet your people say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ But it is their way that is not just. 18 If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and does evil,(JA) they will die for it.(JB) 19 And if a wicked person turns away from their wickedness and does what is just and right, they will live by doing so.(JC) 20 Yet you Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ But I will judge each of you according to your own ways.”(JD)

Jerusalem’s Fall Explained

21 In the twelfth year of our exile, in the tenth month on the fifth day, a man who had escaped(JE) from Jerusalem came to me and said, “The city has fallen!(JF) 22 Now the evening before the man arrived, the hand of the Lord was on me,(JG) and he opened my mouth(JH) before the man came to me in the morning. So my mouth was opened and I was no longer silent.(JI)

23 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 24 “Son of man, the people living in those ruins(JJ) in the land of Israel are saying, ‘Abraham was only one man, yet he possessed the land. But we are many;(JK) surely the land has been given to us as our possession.’(JL) 25 Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Since you eat(JM) meat with the blood(JN) still in it and look to your idols and shed blood, should you then possess the land?(JO) 26 You rely on your sword, you do detestable things,(JP) and each of you defiles his neighbor’s wife.(JQ) Should you then possess the land?’

27 “Say this to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: As surely as I live, those who are left in the ruins will fall by the sword, those out in the country I will give to the wild animals to be devoured, and those in strongholds and caves will die of a plague.(JR) 28 I will make the land a desolate waste, and her proud strength will come to an end, and the mountains(JS) of Israel will become desolate so that no one will cross them.(JT) 29 Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I have made the land a desolate(JU) waste because of all the detestable things they have done.’(JV)

30 “As for you, son of man, your people are talking together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, saying to each other, ‘Come and hear the message that has come from the Lord.’ 31 My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before(JW) you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy(JX) for unjust gain.(JY) 32 Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs(JZ) with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice.(KA)

33 “When all this comes true—and it surely will—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.(KB)
