Prophecy Against Ammon

25 The word of the Lord came to me: (A)“Son of man, (B)set your face toward (C)the Ammonites and prophesy against them. Say to the Ammonites, Hear the word of the Lord God: (D)Thus says the Lord God, Because you said, (E)‘Aha!’ over my (F)sanctuary when it was profaned, and over the land of Israel when it was made desolate, and over the house of Judah when they went into exile, therefore behold, I am handing you over to (G)the people of the East for a possession, and they shall set their encampments among you and make their dwellings in your midst. They shall eat your fruit, and they shall drink your milk. I will make (H)Rabbah a (I)pasture for camels and Ammon[a] (J)a fold for flocks. (K)Then you will know that I am the Lord. For thus says the Lord God: Because (L)you have clapped your hands (M)and stamped your feet and (N)rejoiced with all the (O)malice within your soul against the land of Israel, therefore, behold, (P)I have stretched out my hand against you, and (Q)will hand you over as plunder to the nations. And I will cut you off from the peoples and will make you perish out of the countries; I will destroy you. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

Prophecy Against Moab and Seir

“Thus says the Lord God: Because (R)Moab and (S)Seir[b] said, ‘Behold, the (T)house of Judah is like all the other nations,’ therefore (U)I will lay open the flank of Moab from the cities, from its cities on its frontier, the glory of the country, (V)Beth-jeshimoth, (W)Baal-meon, and (X)Kiriathaim. 10 I will give it (Y)along with the Ammonites (Z)to the people of the East as a possession, (AA)that the Ammonites may be remembered no more among the nations, 11 (AB)and I will execute judgments upon Moab. (AC)Then they will know that I am the Lord.

Prophecy Against Edom

12 “Thus says the Lord God: Because (AD)Edom acted revengefully against the house of Judah and has grievously offended (AE)in taking vengeance on them, 13 therefore thus says the Lord God, (AF)I will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off from it man and beast. And I will make it desolate; from (AG)Teman even to (AH)Dedan they shall fall by the sword. 14 And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom (AI)by the hand of my people Israel, and they shall do in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath, and (AJ)they shall know my vengeance, declares the Lord God.

Prophecy Against Philistia

15 “Thus says the Lord God: Because (AK)the Philistines (AL)acted revengefully and took vengeance (AM)with malice of soul to destroy in never-ending enmity, 16 therefore thus says the Lord God, (AN)Behold, I will stretch out my hand against the Philistines, and I will cut off (AO)the Cherethites and destroy the rest of the seacoast. 17 I will execute great vengeance on them (AP)with wrathful rebukes. (AQ)Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I lay my vengeance upon them.”

Prophecy Against Tyre

26 (AR)In the eleventh year, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: (AS)“Son of man, because (AT)Tyre said concerning Jerusalem, (AU)‘Aha, the gate of the peoples is broken; it has swung open to me. I shall be replenished, now that she is laid waste,’ therefore thus says the Lord God: (AV)Behold, I am against you, O Tyre, and will bring up (AW)many nations against you, (AX)as the sea brings up its waves. They shall destroy the walls of Tyre and break down her towers, and I will scrape her soil from her and (AY)make her a bare rock. She (AZ)shall be in the midst of the sea a place for the spreading of nets, (BA)for I have spoken, declares the Lord God. And she shall become plunder for the nations, and her daughters on the mainland shall be killed by the sword. (BB)Then they will know that I am the Lord.

“For thus says the Lord God: (BC)Behold, I will bring against Tyre (BD)from the north Nebuchadnezzar[c] king of Babylon, (BE)king of kings, with horses and chariots, and with horsemen and a host of many soldiers. He will kill with the sword (BF)your daughters on the mainland. (BG)He will set up a siege wall against you and throw up a mound against you, and raise (BH)a roof of shields against you. (BI)He will direct the shock of his battering rams against your walls, and with his axes he will break down your towers. 10 His horses will be so many that their dust will cover you. Your walls will shake at the noise of the horsemen and wagons and chariots, when he enters your gates as men enter a city that has been breached. 11 With the hoofs of his horses he will trample all your streets. He will kill your people with the sword, and your mighty pillars will fall to the ground. 12 They will plunder (BJ)your riches and loot (BK)your merchandise. They will break down your walls and destroy your pleasant houses. Your stones and timber and (BL)soil they will cast into the midst of the waters. 13 (BM)And I will stop the music of your songs, and (BN)the sound of your lyres shall be heard no more. 14 (BO)I will make you a bare rock. (BP)You shall be a place for the spreading of nets. You shall never be rebuilt, (BQ)for I am the Lord; I have spoken, declares the Lord God.

15 “Thus says the Lord God to Tyre: Will not (BR)the coastlands shake at the sound of your fall, (BS)when the wounded groan, when slaughter is made in your midst? 16 Then all (BT)the princes of the sea will step down from their thrones and (BU)remove their robes and strip off their embroidered garments. They will clothe themselves with trembling; (BV)they will sit on the ground and (BW)tremble every moment and (BX)be appalled at you. 17 And they will (BY)raise a lamentation over you and say to you,

“‘How you have perished,
    you who were inhabited from the seas,
O city renowned,
    (BZ)who was mighty on the sea;
she and her inhabitants (CA)imposed their terror
    on all her inhabitants!
18 Now the coastlands tremble
    on the day of your fall,
and the coastlands that are on the sea
    are dismayed at your passing.’

19 “For thus says the Lord God: When I make you a city laid waste, like the cities that are not inhabited, (CB)when I bring up the deep over you, and the great waters cover you, 20 then (CC)I will make you go down with those who go down to the pit, to the people of old, and I will make you to dwell in the world below, among ruins from of old, (CD)with those who go down to the pit, so that you will not be inhabited; but I will set beauty (CE)in the land of the living. 21 I will bring you (CF)to a dreadful end, and you shall be no more. (CG)Though you be sought for, you will never be found again, declares the Lord God.”

A Lament for Tyre

27 The word of the Lord came to me: “Now you, (CH)son of man, (CI)raise a lamentation over Tyre, and say to Tyre, who dwells at (CJ)the entrances to the sea, (CK)merchant of the peoples to many coastlands, thus says the Lord God:

“O Tyre, you have said,
    ‘I am (CL)perfect in beauty.’
Your borders are (CM)in the heart of the seas;
    your builders made perfect your beauty.
They made all your planks
    of fir trees from (CN)Senir;
they took (CO)a cedar from Lebanon
    to make a mast for you.
Of (CP)oaks of Bashan
    they made your oars;
they made your deck of pines
    from (CQ)the coasts of Cyprus,
    inlaid with ivory.
(CR)Of fine embroidered linen from Egypt
    was your sail,
    serving as your banner;
blue and purple from (CS)the coasts of Elishah
    was your awning.
The inhabitants of Sidon and (CT)Arvad
    were your rowers;
your skilled men, O Tyre, were in you;
    they were (CU)your pilots.
The elders of (CV)Gebal and her skilled men were in you,
    (CW)caulking your seams;
all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in you
    to barter for your wares.

10 (CX)“Persia and (CY)Lud and (CZ)Put were in your army as your men of war. (DA)They hung the shield and helmet in you; they gave you splendor. 11 Men of (DB)Arvad and Helech were on your walls all around, and men of Gamad were in your towers. They hung their shields on your walls all around; they made (DC)perfect your beauty.

12 (DD)“Tarshish did (DE)business with you because of your great wealth of every kind; silver, iron, tin, and lead they exchanged for your (DF)wares. 13 (DG)Javan, (DH)Tubal, and (DI)Meshech traded with you; they exchanged human beings and vessels of bronze for your merchandise. 14 From (DJ)Beth-togarmah they exchanged horses, war horses, and mules (DK)for your wares. 15 The men of (DL)Dedan[d] traded with you. Many coastlands were your own special markets; they brought you in payment ivory tusks and ebony. 16 Syria (DM)did business with you because of your abundant goods; they exchanged for your wares (DN)emeralds, (DO)purple, (DP)embroidered work, (DQ)fine linen, coral, and (DR)ruby. 17 Judah and the land of Israel traded with you; they exchanged for your merchandise (DS)wheat of (DT)Minnith, meal,[e] honey, oil, and (DU)balm. 18 (DV)Damascus did business with you for your abundant goods, because of your great wealth of every kind; wine of Helbon and (DW)wool of Sahar 19 and casks of wine[f] from Uzal they exchanged for your wares; wrought iron, (DX)cassia, and (DY)calamus were bartered for your merchandise. 20 Dedan traded with you in saddlecloths for riding. 21 Arabia and all the princes of (DZ)Kedar were your favored dealers (EA)in lambs, rams, and goats; in these they did business with you. 22 The traders of (EB)Sheba and (EC)Raamah traded with you; they exchanged (ED)for your wares (EE)the best of all kinds of spices and all precious stones and gold. 23 (EF)Haran, Canneh, (EG)Eden, traders of Sheba, (EH)Asshur, and Chilmad traded with you. 24 In your market these traded with you in choice garments, in clothes of (EI)blue and (EJ)embroidered work, and in carpets of colored material, bound with cords and made secure. 25 (EK)The ships of (EL)Tarshish traveled for you with your merchandise. So you were filled and heavily laden (EM)in the heart of the seas.

26 “Your rowers have brought you out
    into the high seas.
(EN)The east wind has wrecked you
    in the heart of the seas.
27 Your riches, your wares, your merchandise,
    your mariners and (EO)your pilots,
(EP)your caulkers, your dealers in merchandise,
    and all your men of war who are in you,
with all your crew
    that is in your midst,
sink into the heart of the seas
    (EQ)on the day of your fall.
28 At the sound of the cry of your pilots
    (ER)the countryside shakes,
29 and down from their ships
    (ES)come all who handle the oar.
The mariners and all the pilots of the sea
    stand on the land
30 (ET)and shout aloud over you
    and cry out bitterly.
(EU)They cast dust on their heads
    (EV)and wallow in ashes;
31 they (EW)make themselves bald for you
    and put sackcloth on their waist,
and they weep over you in bitterness of soul,
    with bitter mourning.
32 In their wailing they (EX)raise a lamentation for you
    and lament over you:
(EY)‘Who is like Tyre,
    like one destroyed in the midst of the sea?
33 When your wares came from the seas,
    (EZ)you satisfied many peoples;
with your abundant wealth and merchandise
    (FA)you enriched the kings of the earth.
34 Now (FB)you are wrecked by the seas,
    in the depths of the waters;
your merchandise and all your crew in your midst
    have sunk with you.
35 (FC)All the inhabitants of the coastlands
    are appalled at you,
and (FD)the hair of their kings bristles with horror;
    their faces are convulsed.
36 (FE)The merchants among the peoples (FF)hiss at you;
    (FG)you have come to a dreadful end
    and shall be no more forever.’”

Prophecy Against the Prince of Tyre

28 The word of the Lord came to me: (FH)“Son of man, say to (FI)the prince of Tyre, Thus says the Lord God:

(FJ)“Because your heart is proud,
    and (FK)you have said, ‘I am a god,
I sit in the seat of the gods,
    in the heart of the seas,’
yet (FL)you are but a man, and no god,
    (FM)though you make your heart like the heart of a god—
(FN)you are indeed wiser (FO)than (FP)Daniel;
    no secret is hidden from you;
by your wisdom and your understanding
    (FQ)you have made wealth for yourself,
and have gathered gold and silver
    into your treasuries;
by your great wisdom in your trade
    you have increased your wealth,
    and (FR)your heart has become proud in your wealth—
therefore thus says the Lord God:
(FS)Because you make your heart
    like the heart of a god,
therefore, behold, I will bring (FT)foreigners upon you,
    the most ruthless of the nations;
and they shall draw their swords against (FU)the beauty of your wisdom
    and defile (FV)your splendor.
(FW)They shall thrust you down into the pit,
    (FX)and you shall die the death of the slain
    in the heart of the seas.
(FY)Will you still say, ‘I am a god,’
    in the presence of those who kill you,
though (FZ)you are but a man, and no god,
    in the hands of those who slay you?
10 (GA)You shall die the death of the uncircumcised
    by the hand of foreigners;
    (GB)for I have spoken, declares the Lord God.”

A Lament over the King of Tyre

11 Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me: 12 (GC)“Son of man, (GD)raise a lamentation over (GE)the king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord God:

“You were the signet of perfection,[g]
    (GF)full of wisdom and (GG)perfect in beauty.
13 You were in (GH)Eden, the garden of God;
    (GI)every precious stone was your covering,
(GJ)sardius, topaz, and diamond,
    beryl, onyx, and jasper,
sapphire,[h] (GK)emerald, and carbuncle;
    and crafted in gold were your settings
    and your engravings.[i]
(GL)On the day that you were created
    they were prepared.
14 You were an anointed (GM)guardian cherub.
    I placed you;[j] you were on (GN)the holy mountain of God;
    in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.
15 You were blameless in your ways
    (GO)from the day you were created,
    till unrighteousness was found in you.
16 In the abundance of (GP)your trade
    you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned;
so I cast you as a profane thing from (GQ)the mountain of God,
    and I destroyed you,[k] (GR)O guardian cherub,
    from the midst of the stones of fire.
17 (GS)Your heart was proud because of (GT)your beauty;
    you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground;
    I exposed you before kings,
    to feast their eyes on you.
18 By the multitude of your iniquities,
    in the unrighteousness of your trade
    you profaned your sanctuaries;
so (GU)I brought fire out from your midst;
    it consumed you,
and I turned you to ashes on the earth
    (GV)in the sight of all who saw you.
19 All who know you among the peoples
    are appalled at you;
(GW)you have come to a dreadful end
    and shall be no more forever.”

Prophecy Against Sidon

20 The word of the Lord came to me: 21 (GX)“Son of man, (GY)set your face toward (GZ)Sidon, and (HA)prophesy against her 22 and say, Thus says the Lord God:

“Behold, (HB)I am against you, O Sidon,
    and (HC)I will manifest my glory in your midst.
And (HD)they shall know that I am the Lord
    (HE)when I execute judgments in her
    and (HF)manifest my holiness in her;
23 for I will send (HG)pestilence into her,
    and blood into her streets;
and the slain shall fall in her midst,
    by the sword that is against her on every side.
Then they will know that I am the Lord.

24 “And for the house of Israel (HH)there shall be no more a brier to prick or (HI)a thorn to hurt them among all their neighbors (HJ)who have treated them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.

Israel Gathered in Security

25 “Thus says the Lord God: (HK)When I gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and (HL)manifest my holiness in them in the sight of the nations, (HM)then they shall dwell in their own land that I gave to my servant Jacob. 26 (HN)And they shall dwell securely in it, and they shall build houses and plant vineyards. They shall dwell securely, (HO)when I execute judgments upon all their neighbors (HP)who have treated them with contempt. (HQ)Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.”

Prophecy Against Egypt

29 (HR)In the tenth year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: (HS)“Son of man, (HT)set your face against (HU)Pharaoh king of Egypt, (HV)and prophesy against him and (HW)against all Egypt; speak, and say, Thus says the Lord God:

(HX)“Behold, I am against you,
    Pharaoh king of Egypt,
(HY)the great dragon that lies
    in the midst of his streams,
(HZ)that says, ‘My Nile is my own;
    I made it for myself.’
I will (IA)put hooks in your jaws,
    and make the fish of your streams stick to your scales;
and I will draw you up out of the midst of your streams,
    with all the fish of your streams
    that stick to your scales.
(IB)And I will cast you out into the wilderness,
    you and all the fish of your streams;
you shall fall (IC)on the open field,
    and (ID)not be brought together or gathered.
To the beasts of the earth and to the birds of the heavens
    (IE)I give you as food.

Then all the inhabitants of Egypt (IF)shall know that I am the Lord.

“Because you[l] have been (IG)a staff of reed to the house of Israel, (IH)when they grasped you with the hand, you broke and tore all their shoulders; and when they leaned on you, you broke and made all their loins to shake.[m] Therefore thus says the Lord God: (II)Behold, I will bring a sword upon you, and will cut off from you man and beast, and the land of Egypt shall be a desolation and a waste. (IJ)Then they will know that I am the Lord.

(IK)“Because you[n] said, ‘The Nile is mine, and I made it,’ 10 therefore, (IL)behold, I am against you and (IM)against your streams, and (IN)I will make the land of Egypt an utter waste and desolation, (IO)from Migdol to Syene, as far as the border of Cush. 11 (IP)No foot of man shall pass through it, and no foot of beast shall pass through it; it shall be uninhabited forty years. 12 (IQ)And I will make the land of Egypt a desolation in the midst of desolated countries, and her cities shall be a desolation forty years among cities that are laid waste. (IR)I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and disperse them through the countries.

13 “For thus says the Lord God: At the end of forty years (IS)I will gather the Egyptians from the peoples among whom they were scattered, 14 and (IT)I will restore the fortunes of Egypt and bring them back to (IU)the land of Pathros, the land of their origin, and there they shall be a lowly kingdom. 15 It shall be the most lowly of the kingdoms, (IV)and never again exalt itself above the nations. And I will make them so small that they will never again rule over the nations. 16 And it shall never again be (IW)the reliance of the house of Israel, recalling their iniquity, when they turn to them for aid. (IX)Then they will know that I am the Lord God.”

17 (IY)In the twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 18 (IZ)“Son of man, (JA)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made his army labor hard against Tyre. Every head was made bald, and every shoulder was rubbed bare, yet neither he nor his army got anything from Tyre to pay for the labor that he had performed against her. 19 Therefore thus says the Lord God: (JB)Behold, I will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; (JC)and he shall carry off its wealth[o] (JD)and despoil it and plunder it; and it shall be the wages for his army. 20 (JE)I have given him the land of Egypt as his payment for which he labored, because they worked for me, declares the Lord God.

21 “On that day (JF)I will cause a horn to spring up for the house of Israel, and (JG)I will open your lips among them. (JH)Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

A Lament for Egypt

30 The word of the Lord came to me: (JI)“Son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus says the Lord God:

(JJ)“Wail, ‘Alas for the day!’
    (JK)For the day is near,
    (JL)the day of the Lord is near;
it will be (JM)a day of clouds,
    a time of doom for[p] the nations.
(JN)A sword shall come upon Egypt,
    (JO)and anguish shall be in (JP)Cush,
when the slain fall in Egypt,
    and (JQ)her wealth[q] is carried away,
    and (JR)her foundations are torn down.

(JS)Cush, and (JT)Put, and Lud, and (JU)all Arabia, and Libya,[r] and the people of the land that is in league,[s] shall fall with them by the sword.

“Thus says the Lord:
(JV)Those who support Egypt shall fall,
    and (JW)her proud might shall come down;
(JX)from Migdol to Syene
    they shall fall within her by the sword,
declares the Lord God.
(JY)And they shall be desolated in the midst of desolated countries,
    and their cities shall be in the midst of cities that are laid waste.
(JZ)Then they will know that I am the Lord,
    when (KA)I have set fire to Egypt,
    and (KB)all her helpers are broken.

“On that day (KC)messengers shall go out from me in ships to terrify the unsuspecting (KD)people of Cush, and (KE)anguish shall come upon them on the day of Egypt's doom;[t] for, behold, it comes!

10 “Thus says the Lord God:

(KF)“I will put an end to the wealth of Egypt,
    by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
11 He and his people with him, (KG)the most ruthless of nations,
    shall be brought in to destroy the land,
(KH)and they shall draw their swords against Egypt
    and fill the land with the slain.
12 And (KI)I will (KJ)dry up the Nile
    and will sell the land into the hand of (KK)evildoers;
(KL)I will bring desolation upon the land and everything in it,
    by the hand of (KM)foreigners;
(KN)I am the Lord; I have spoken.

13 “Thus says the Lord God:

(KO)“I will destroy the idols
    and put an end to the images in (KP)Memphis;
(KQ)there shall no longer be a prince from the land of Egypt;
    so (KR)I will put fear in the land of Egypt.
14 I will make (KS)Pathros a desolation
    and will set fire to (KT)Zoan
    (KU)and will execute judgments on (KV)Thebes.
15 And I will pour out my wrath on Pelusium,
    the stronghold of Egypt,
    and cut off the multitude[u] of Thebes.
16 And I will set fire to Egypt;
    Pelusium shall be in great agony;
Thebes shall be breached,
    and (KW)Memphis shall face enemies[v] by day.
17 The young men of On and of Pi-beseth shall fall by the sword,
    and the women[w] shall go into captivity.
18 At (KX)Tehaphnehes (KY)the day shall be dark,
    when I break there the yoke bars of Egypt,
and (KZ)her proud might shall come to an end in her;
    she shall be covered by a cloud,
    and her daughters shall go into captivity.
19 Thus (LA)I will execute judgments on Egypt.
    (LB)Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Egypt Shall Fall to Babylon

20 (LC)In the eleventh year, in the first month, on the seventh day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 21 (LD)“Son of man, (LE)I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and behold, (LF)it has not been bound up, to heal it by binding it with a bandage, so that it may become strong to wield the sword. 22 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt and (LG)will break his arms, both the strong arm and the one that was broken, and I will make the sword fall from his hand. 23 (LH)I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them through the countries. 24 And (LI)I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon and put (LJ)my sword in his hand, but I will break the arms of Pharaoh, and he will groan before him (LK)like a man mortally wounded. 25 I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh shall fall. (LL)Then they shall know that I am the Lord, (LM)when I put my sword into the hand of the king of Babylon and he stretches it out against the land of Egypt. 26 And I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them throughout the countries. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

A Prophecy Against Ammon

25 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, set your face against(A) the Ammonites(B) and prophesy against them.(C) Say to them, ‘Hear the word of the Sovereign Lord. This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you said “Aha!(D)” over my sanctuary when it was desecrated(E) and over the land of Israel when it was laid waste and over the people of Judah when they went into exile,(F) therefore I am going to give you to the people of the East(G) as a possession. They will set up their camps(H) and pitch their tents among you; they will eat your fruit and drink your milk.(I) I will turn Rabbah(J) into a pasture for camels and Ammon into a resting place for sheep.(K) Then you will know that I am the Lord. For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you have clapped your hands(L) and stamped your feet, rejoicing with all the malice of your heart against the land of Israel,(M) therefore I will stretch out my hand(N) against you and give you as plunder(O) to the nations. I will wipe you out from among the nations and exterminate you from the countries. I will destroy(P) you, and you will know that I am the Lord.(Q)’”

A Prophecy Against Moab

“This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because Moab(R) and Seir(S) said, “Look, Judah has become like all the other nations,” therefore I will expose the flank of Moab, beginning at its frontier towns—Beth Jeshimoth(T), Baal Meon(U) and Kiriathaim(V)—the glory of that land. 10 I will give Moab along with the Ammonites to the people of the East as a possession, so that the Ammonites will not be remembered(W) among the nations; 11 and I will inflict punishment on Moab. Then they will know that I am the Lord.’”(X)

A Prophecy Against Edom

12 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because Edom(Y) took revenge on Judah and became very guilty by doing so, 13 therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will stretch out my hand(Z) against Edom and kill both man and beast.(AA) I will lay it waste, and from Teman(AB) to Dedan(AC) they will fall by the sword.(AD) 14 I will take vengeance on Edom by the hand of my people Israel, and they will deal with Edom in accordance with my anger(AE) and my wrath; they will know my vengeance, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”(AF)

A Prophecy Against Philistia

15 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because the Philistines(AG) acted in vengeance and took revenge with malice(AH) in their hearts, and with ancient hostility sought to destroy Judah, 16 therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am about to stretch out my hand against the Philistines,(AI) and I will wipe out the Kerethites(AJ) and destroy those remaining along the coast.(AK) 17 I will carry out great vengeance(AL) on them and punish(AM) them in my wrath. Then they will know that I am the Lord,(AN) when I take vengeance on them.(AO)’”

A Prophecy Against Tyre

26 In the eleventh month of the twelfth[a] year, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me:(AP) “Son of man, because Tyre(AQ) has said of Jerusalem, ‘Aha!(AR) The gate to the nations is broken, and its doors have swung open to me; now that she lies in ruins I will prosper,’ therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Tyre, and I will bring many nations against you, like the sea(AS) casting up its waves. They will destroy(AT) the walls of Tyre(AU) and pull down her towers; I will scrape away her rubble and make her a bare rock. Out in the sea(AV) she will become a place to spread fishnets,(AW) for I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord. She will become plunder(AX) for the nations,(AY) and her settlements on the mainland will be ravaged by the sword. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

“For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: From the north I am going to bring against Tyre Nebuchadnezzar[b](AZ) king of Babylon, king of kings,(BA) with horses and chariots,(BB) with horsemen and a great army. He will ravage your settlements on the mainland with the sword; he will set up siege works(BC) against you, build a ramp(BD) up to your walls and raise his shields against you. He will direct the blows of his battering rams against your walls and demolish your towers with his weapons.(BE) 10 His horses will be so many that they will cover you with dust. Your walls will tremble at the noise of the warhorses, wagons and chariots(BF) when he enters your gates as men enter a city whose walls have been broken through. 11 The hooves(BG) of his horses will trample all your streets; he will kill your people with the sword, and your strong pillars(BH) will fall to the ground.(BI) 12 They will plunder your wealth and loot your merchandise; they will break down your walls and demolish your fine houses and throw your stones, timber and rubble into the sea.(BJ) 13 I will put an end(BK) to your noisy songs,(BL) and the music of your harps(BM) will be heard no more.(BN) 14 I will make you a bare rock, and you will become a place to spread fishnets. You will never be rebuilt,(BO) for I the Lord have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.

15 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Tyre: Will not the coastlands(BP) tremble(BQ) at the sound of your fall, when the wounded groan(BR) and the slaughter takes place in you? 16 Then all the princes of the coast will step down from their thrones and lay aside their robes and take off their embroidered(BS) garments. Clothed(BT) with terror, they will sit on the ground,(BU) trembling(BV) every moment, appalled(BW) at you. 17 Then they will take up a lament(BX) concerning you and say to you:

“‘How you are destroyed, city of renown,
    peopled by men of the sea!
You were a power on the seas,
    you and your citizens;
you put your terror
    on all who lived there.(BY)
18 Now the coastlands tremble(BZ)
    on the day of your fall;
the islands in the sea
    are terrified at your collapse.’(CA)

19 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When I make you a desolate city, like cities no longer inhabited, and when I bring the ocean depths(CB) over you and its vast waters cover you,(CC) 20 then I will bring you down with those who go down to the pit,(CD) to the people of long ago. I will make you dwell in the earth below, as in ancient ruins, with those who go down to the pit, and you will not return or take your place[c] in the land of the living.(CE) 21 I will bring you to a horrible end and you will be no more.(CF) You will be sought, but you will never again be found, declares the Sovereign Lord.”(CG)

A Lament Over Tyre

27 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, take up a lament(CH) concerning Tyre. Say to Tyre,(CI) situated at the gateway to the sea,(CJ) merchant of peoples on many coasts, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘You say, Tyre,
    “I am perfect in beauty.(CK)
Your domain was on the high seas;
    your builders brought your beauty to perfection.(CL)
They made all your timbers
    of juniper from Senir[d];(CM)
they took a cedar from Lebanon(CN)
    to make a mast for you.
Of oaks(CO) from Bashan
    they made your oars;
of cypress wood[e] from the coasts of Cyprus(CP)
    they made your deck, adorned with ivory.
Fine embroidered linen(CQ) from Egypt was your sail
    and served as your banner;
your awnings were of blue and purple(CR)
    from the coasts of Elishah.(CS)
Men of Sidon and Arvad(CT) were your oarsmen;
    your skilled men, Tyre, were aboard as your sailors.(CU)
Veteran craftsmen of Byblos(CV) were on board
    as shipwrights to caulk your seams.
All the ships of the sea(CW) and their sailors
    came alongside to trade for your wares.

10 “‘Men of Persia,(CX) Lydia(CY) and Put(CZ)
    served as soldiers in your army.
They hung their shields(DA) and helmets on your walls,
    bringing you splendor.
11 Men of Arvad and Helek
    guarded your walls on every side;
men of Gammad
    were in your towers.
They hung their shields around your walls;
    they brought your beauty to perfection.(DB)

12 “‘Tarshish(DC) did business with you because of your great wealth of goods;(DD) they exchanged silver, iron, tin and lead for your merchandise.

18 “‘Damascus(DT) did business with you because of your many products and great wealth of goods.(DU) They offered wine from Helbon, wool from Zahar 19 and casks of wine from Izal(DV) in exchange for your wares: wrought iron, cassia(DW) and calamus.

20 “‘Dedan(DX) traded in saddle blankets with you.

21 “‘Arabia(DY) and all the princes of Kedar(DZ) were your customers; they did business with you in lambs, rams and goats.

22 “‘The merchants of Sheba(EA) and Raamah traded with you; for your merchandise they exchanged the finest of all kinds of spices(EB) and precious stones, and gold.(EC)

23 “‘Harran,(ED) Kanneh and Eden(EE) and merchants of Sheba, Ashur(EF) and Kilmad traded with you. 24 In your marketplace they traded with you beautiful garments, blue fabric, embroidered work and multicolored rugs with cords twisted and tightly knotted.

25 “‘The ships of Tarshish(EG) serve
    as carriers for your wares.
You are filled with heavy cargo
    as you sail the sea.(EH)
26 Your oarsmen take you
    out to the high seas.
But the east wind(EI) will break you to pieces
    far out at sea.
27 Your wealth,(EJ) merchandise and wares,
    your mariners, sailors and shipwrights,
your merchants and all your soldiers,
    and everyone else on board
will sink into the heart of the sea(EK)
    on the day of your shipwreck.
28 The shorelands will quake(EL)
    when your sailors cry out.
29 All who handle the oars
    will abandon their ships;
the mariners and all the sailors
    will stand on the shore.
30 They will raise their voice
    and cry bitterly over you;
they will sprinkle dust(EM) on their heads
    and roll(EN) in ashes.(EO)
31 They will shave their heads(EP) because of you
    and will put on sackcloth.
They will weep(EQ) over you with anguish of soul
    and with bitter mourning.(ER)
32 As they wail and mourn over you,
    they will take up a lament(ES) concerning you:
“Who was ever silenced like Tyre,
    surrounded by the sea?(ET)
33 When your merchandise went out on the seas,(EU)
    you satisfied many nations;
with your great wealth(EV) and your wares
    you enriched the kings of the earth.
34 Now you are shattered by the sea
    in the depths of the waters;
your wares and all your company
    have gone down with you.(EW)
35 All who live in the coastlands(EX)
    are appalled(EY) at you;
their kings shudder with horror
    and their faces are distorted with fear.(EZ)
36 The merchants among the nations scoff at you;(FA)
    you have come to a horrible end
    and will be no more.(FB)’”

A Prophecy Against the King of Tyre

28 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man(FC), say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘In the pride of your heart
    you say, “I am a god;
I sit on the throne(FD) of a god
    in the heart of the seas.”(FE)
But you are a mere mortal and not a god,
    though you think you are as wise as a god.(FF)
Are you wiser than Daniel[i]?(FG)
    Is no secret hidden from you?
By your wisdom and understanding
    you have gained wealth for yourself
and amassed gold and silver
    in your treasuries.(FH)
By your great skill in trading(FI)
    you have increased your wealth,(FJ)
and because of your wealth
    your heart has grown proud.(FK)

“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘Because you think you are wise,
    as wise as a god,
I am going to bring foreigners against you,
    the most ruthless of nations;(FL)
they will draw their swords against your beauty and wisdom(FM)
    and pierce your shining splendor.(FN)
They will bring you down to the pit,(FO)
    and you will die a violent death(FP)
    in the heart of the seas.(FQ)
Will you then say, “I am a god,”
    in the presence of those who kill you?
You will be but a mortal, not a god,(FR)
    in the hands of those who slay you.(FS)
10 You will die the death of the uncircumcised(FT)
    at the hands of foreigners.

I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”

11 The word of the Lord came to me: 12 “Son of man, take up a lament(FU) concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘You were the seal of perfection,
    full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.(FV)
13 You were in Eden,(FW)
    the garden of God;(FX)
every precious stone(FY) adorned you:
    carnelian, chrysolite and emerald,
    topaz, onyx and jasper,
    lapis lazuli, turquoise(FZ) and beryl.[j]
Your settings and mountings[k] were made of gold;
    on the day you were created they were prepared.(GA)
14 You were anointed(GB) as a guardian cherub,(GC)
    for so I ordained you.
You were on the holy mount of God;
    you walked among the fiery stones.
15 You were blameless in your ways
    from the day you were created
    till wickedness was found in you.
16 Through your widespread trade
    you were filled with violence,(GD)
    and you sinned.
So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God,
    and I expelled you, guardian cherub,(GE)
    from among the fiery stones.
17 Your heart became proud(GF)
    on account of your beauty,
and you corrupted your wisdom
    because of your splendor.
So I threw you to the earth;
    I made a spectacle of you before kings.(GG)
18 By your many sins and dishonest trade
    you have desecrated your sanctuaries.
So I made a fire(GH) come out from you,
    and it consumed you,
and I reduced you to ashes(GI) on the ground
    in the sight of all who were watching.(GJ)
19 All the nations who knew you
    are appalled(GK) at you;
you have come to a horrible end
    and will be no more.(GL)’”

A Prophecy Against Sidon

20 The word of the Lord came to me: 21 “Son of man, set your face against(GM) Sidon;(GN) prophesy against her 22 and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘I am against you, Sidon,
    and among you I will display my glory.(GO)
You will know that I am the Lord,
    when I inflict punishment(GP) on you
    and within you am proved to be holy.(GQ)
23 I will send a plague upon you
    and make blood flow in your streets.
The slain will fall within you,
    with the sword against you on every side.
Then you will know that I am the Lord.(GR)

24 “‘No longer will the people of Israel have malicious neighbors who are painful briers and sharp thorns.(GS) Then they will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.

25 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When I gather(GT) the people of Israel from the nations where they have been scattered,(GU) I will be proved holy(GV) through them in the sight of the nations. Then they will live in their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob.(GW) 26 They will live there in safety(GX) and will build houses and plant(GY) vineyards; they will live in safety when I inflict punishment(GZ) on all their neighbors who maligned them. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.(HA)’”

A Prophecy Against Egypt

Judgment on Pharaoh

29 In the tenth year, in the tenth month on the twelfth day, the word of the Lord came to me:(HB) “Son of man, set your face against(HC) Pharaoh king of Egypt(HD) and prophesy against him and against all Egypt.(HE) Speak to him and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘I am against you, Pharaoh(HF) king of Egypt,
    you great monster(HG) lying among your streams.
You say, “The Nile(HH) belongs to me;
    I made it for myself.”
But I will put hooks(HI) in your jaws
    and make the fish of your streams stick to your scales.
I will pull you out from among your streams,
    with all the fish sticking to your scales.(HJ)
I will leave you in the desert,
    you and all the fish of your streams.
You will fall on the open field
    and not be gathered(HK) or picked up.
I will give you as food
    to the beasts of the earth and the birds of the sky.(HL)

Then all who live in Egypt will know that I am the Lord.

“‘You have been a staff of reed(HM) for the people of Israel. When they grasped you with their hands, you splintered(HN) and you tore open their shoulders; when they leaned on you, you broke and their backs were wrenched.[l](HO)

“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will bring a sword against you and kill both man and beast.(HP) Egypt will become a desolate wasteland. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

“‘Because you said, “The Nile(HQ) is mine; I made it,(HR) 10 therefore I am against you(HS) and against your streams, and I will make the land of Egypt(HT) a ruin and a desolate waste(HU) from Migdol(HV) to Aswan,(HW) as far as the border of Cush.[m](HX) 11 The foot of neither man nor beast will pass through it; no one will live there for forty years.(HY) 12 I will make the land of Egypt desolate(HZ) among devastated lands, and her cities will lie desolate forty years among ruined cities. And I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them through the countries.(IA)

13 “‘Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says: At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the nations where they were scattered. 14 I will bring them back from captivity and return them to Upper Egypt,(IB) the land of their ancestry. There they will be a lowly(IC) kingdom.(ID) 15 It will be the lowliest of kingdoms and will never again exalt itself above the other nations.(IE) I will make it so weak that it will never again rule over the nations. 16 Egypt will no longer be a source of confidence(IF) for the people of Israel but will be a reminder(IG) of their sin in turning to her for help.(IH) Then they will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.(II)’”

Nebuchadnezzar’s Reward

17 In the twenty-seventh year, in the first month on the first day, the word of the Lord came to me:(IJ) 18 “Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar(IK) king of Babylon drove his army in a hard campaign against Tyre; every head was rubbed bare(IL) and every shoulder made raw.(IM) Yet he and his army got no reward from the campaign he led against Tyre. 19 Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am going to give Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king(IN) of Babylon, and he will carry off its wealth. He will loot and plunder(IO) the land as pay for his army.(IP) 20 I have given him Egypt(IQ) as a reward for his efforts because he and his army did it for me, declares the Sovereign Lord.(IR)

21 “On that day I will make a horn[n](IS) grow for the Israelites, and I will open your mouth(IT) among them. Then they will know that I am the Lord.(IU)

A Lament Over Egypt

30 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, prophesy and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘Wail(IV) and say,
    “Alas for that day!”
For the day is near,(IW)
    the day of the Lord(IX) is near—
a day of clouds,
    a time of doom for the nations.
A sword will come against Egypt,(IY)
    and anguish will come upon Cush.[o](IZ)
When the slain fall in Egypt,
    her wealth will be carried away
    and her foundations torn down.(JA)

Cush and Libya,(JB) Lydia and all Arabia,(JC) Kub and the people(JD) of the covenant land will fall by the sword along with Egypt.(JE)

“‘This is what the Lord says:

“‘The allies of Egypt will fall
    and her proud strength will fail.
From Migdol to Aswan(JF)
    they will fall by the sword within her,
declares the Sovereign Lord.
“‘They will be desolate
    among desolate lands,
and their cities will lie
    among ruined cities.(JG)
Then they will know that I am the Lord,
    when I set fire(JH) to Egypt
    and all her helpers are crushed.(JI)

“‘On that day messengers will go out from me in ships to frighten Cush(JJ) out of her complacency. Anguish(JK) will take hold of them on the day of Egypt’s doom, for it is sure to come.(JL)

10 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘I will put an end to the hordes of Egypt
    by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar(JM) king of Babylon.(JN)
11 He and his army—the most ruthless of nations(JO)
    will be brought in to destroy the land.
They will draw their swords against Egypt
    and fill the land with the slain.(JP)
12 I will dry up(JQ) the waters of the Nile(JR)
    and sell the land to an evil nation;
by the hand of foreigners
    I will lay waste(JS) the land and everything in it.

I the Lord have spoken.

13 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘I will destroy the idols(JT)
    and put an end to the images in Memphis.(JU)
No longer will there be a prince in Egypt,(JV)
    and I will spread fear throughout the land.
14 I will lay(JW) waste Upper Egypt,
    set fire to Zoan(JX)
    and inflict punishment on Thebes.(JY)
15 I will pour out my wrath on Pelusium,
    the stronghold of Egypt,
    and wipe out the hordes of Thebes.
16 I will set fire(JZ) to Egypt;
    Pelusium will writhe in agony.
Thebes will be taken by storm;
    Memphis(KA) will be in constant distress.
17 The young men of Heliopolis(KB) and Bubastis
    will fall by the sword,
    and the cities themselves will go into captivity.
18 Dark will be the day at Tahpanhes(KC)
    when I break the yoke of Egypt;(KD)
    there her proud strength will come to an end.
She will be covered with clouds,
    and her villages will go into captivity.(KE)
19 So I will inflict punishment(KF) on Egypt,
    and they will know that I am the Lord.’”

Pharaoh’s Arms Are Broken

20 In the eleventh year, in the first month on the seventh day, the word of the Lord came to me:(KG) 21 “Son of man, I have broken the arm(KH) of Pharaoh(KI) king of Egypt. It has not been bound up to be healed(KJ) or put in a splint so that it may become strong enough to hold a sword. 22 Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt.(KK) I will break both his arms, the good arm as well as the broken one, and make the sword fall from his hand.(KL) 23 I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them through the countries.(KM) 24 I will strengthen(KN) the arms of the king of Babylon and put my sword(KO) in his hand, but I will break the arms of Pharaoh, and he will groan(KP) before him like a mortally wounded man. 25 I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh will fall limp. Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I put my sword(KQ) into the hand of the king of Babylon and he brandishes it against Egypt.(KR) 26 I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them through the countries. Then they will know that I am the Lord.(KS)
