19 “Moreover, take up a lamentation for the princes of Israel, 2 and say,
‘What was your mother?
A lioness.
She couched among lions,
in the middle of the young lions she nourished her cubs.
3 She brought up one of her cubs.
He became a young lion.
He learned to catch the prey.
He devoured men.
4 The nations also heard of him.
He was taken in their pit;
and they brought him with hooks to the land of Egypt.
5 “‘Now when she saw that she had waited,
and her hope was lost,
then she took another of her cubs,
and made him a young lion.
6 He went up and down among the lions.
He became a young lion.
He learned to catch the prey.
He devoured men.
7 He knew their palaces,
and laid waste their cities.
The land was desolate,
with its fullness,
because of the noise of his roaring.
8 Then the nations attacked him on every side from the provinces.
They spread their net over him.
He was taken in their pit.
9 They put him in a cage with hooks,
and brought him to the king of Babylon.
They brought him into strongholds,
so that his voice should no more be heard on the mountains of Israel.
10 “‘Your mother was like a vine
in your blood,
planted by the waters.
It was fruitful and full of branches by reason of many waters.
11 It had strong branches for the scepters of those who ruled.
Their stature was exalted among the thick boughs.
They were seen in their height
with the multitude of their branches.
12 But it was plucked up in fury.
It was cast down to the ground,
and the east wind dried up its fruit.
Its strong branches were broken off and withered.
The fire consumed them.
13 Now it is planted in the wilderness,
in a dry and thirsty land.
14 Fire has gone out of its branches.
It has devoured its fruit,
so that there is in it no strong branch to be a scepter to rule.’
This is a lamentation, and shall be for a lamentation.”

19 Y tú, levanta endecha sobre los príncipes de Israel. 2 Dirás: ¡Cómo se echó entre los leones tu madre la leona! Entre los leoncillos crio sus cachorros, 3 e hizo subir uno de sus cachorros; vino a ser leoncillo, y aprendió a arrebatar la presa, y a devorar hombres. 4 Y las naciones oyeron de él; fue tomado en la trampa de ellas, y lo llevaron con grillos a la tierra de Egipto. 5 Viendo ella que había esperado mucho tiempo, y que se perdía su esperanza, tomó otro de sus cachorros, y lo puso por leoncillo. 6 Y él andaba entre los leones; se hizo leoncillo, aprendió a arrebatar la presa, devoró hombres. 7 Saqueó fortalezas, y asoló ciudades; y la tierra fue desolada, y cuanto había en ella, al estruendo de sus rugidos. 8 Arremetieron contra él las gentes de las provincias de alrededor, y extendieron sobre él su red, y en el foso fue apresado. 9 Y lo pusieron en una jaula y lo llevaron con cadenas, y lo llevaron al rey de Babilonia; lo pusieron en las fortalezas, para que su voz no se oyese más sobre los montes de Israel.
10 Tu madre fue como una vid en medio de la viña, plantada junto a las aguas, dando fruto y echando vástagos a causa de las muchas aguas. 11 Y ella tuvo varas fuertes para cetros de reyes; y se elevó su estatura por encima entre las ramas, y fue vista por causa de su altura y la multitud de sus sarmientos. 12 Pero fue arrancada con ira, derribada en tierra, y el viento solano secó su fruto; sus ramas fuertes fueron quebradas y se secaron; las consumió el fuego. 13 Y ahora está plantada en el desierto, en tierra de sequedad y de aridez. 14 Y ha salido fuego de la vara de sus ramas, que ha consumido su fruto, y no ha quedado en ella vara fuerte para cetro de rey.
Endecha es esta, y de endecha servirá.

Dirge for the Princes of Israel
19 “As for you, take up a dirge (funeral poem to be sung) for the princes of Israel 2 and say,
‘What was your mother [Jerusalem and Judah]?
A lioness among lions!
She lay down among young lions,
She reared her cubs.
3
‘When she [the royal mother-city] brought up [Jehoahaz] one of her cubs,
He became a [young] lion,
And he learned to catch and tear the prey;
He devoured men.(A)
4
‘The nations heard about him;
He was captured in their pit,
And they brought him with hooks
To the land of Egypt.(B)
5
‘When she saw, as she waited,
That her hope was lost,
She took [a]another of her cubs
And made him a young lion.(C)
6
‘And he moved among the lions;
He became a young lion,
He learned to tear the prey;
He devoured men.
7
‘He destroyed their palaces
And he flattened their cities;
And the land and all who were in it were appalled
By the sound of his roaring.
8
‘Then the nations set against him (the king)
On every side from the provinces,
And they spread their net over him;
He was captured in their pit.(D)
9
‘They put him in a cage with hooks and chains
And brought him to the king of Babylon;
They brought him in hunting nets
So that his voice would be heard no more
On the mountains of Israel.
10
‘Your mother [Jerusalem] was like a vine in your [b]vineyard,
Planted by the waters;
It was fruitful and full of branches
Because of abundant water.(E)
11
‘And it had strong branches for the scepters of rulers,
And its height was raised above the thick branches and into the clouds
So that it was seen [easily] in its height with the mass of its branches.
12
‘But the vine was uprooted in [godly] wrath [by His representative]
And it was thrown down to the ground;
The east wind dried up its fruit.
Its strong branch was broken off
So that it withered;
The fire [of God’s judgment] consumed it.
13
‘And now it is transplanted in the wilderness,
In a dry and thirsty land [of Babylon].
14
‘And the fire [of Zedekiah’s rebellion] has gone out from its branch;
It has consumed the vine’s shoots and fruit,
So that it has in it no [longer a] strong branch
As a scepter to rule.’”
This is a dirge (funeral poem to be sung), and has become a dirge.

The land with its fullness was desolated
By the noise of his roaring.

And spread their net over him;

And brought him to the king of Babylon;
They brought him in nets,

Her strong branches were broken and withered;
The fire consumed them.
13 And now she is planted in the wilderness,
In a dry and thirsty land.
14 (P)Fire has come out from a rod of her branches
And devoured her fruit,
So that she has no strong branch—a scepter for ruling.’ ”
(Q)This is a lamentation, and has become a lamentation.
