26 And above the expanse over their heads there was (A)the likeness of a throne, (B)in appearance (C)like sapphire;[a] and seated above the likeness of a throne was (D)a likeness with a human appearance. 27 And (E)upward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were (F)gleaming metal, like the appearance of fire enclosed all around. And downward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and (G)there was brightness around him.[b] 28 Like the appearance of (H)the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around.

Such was the appearance of the likeness of (I)the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, (J)I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking.

Ezekiel's Call

And he said to me, (K)“Son of man,[c] (L)stand on your feet, and I will speak with you.” And as he spoke to me, (M)the Spirit entered into me and (N)set me on my feet, and I heard him speaking to me. And he said to me, “Son of man, I send you to the people of Israel, to (O)nations of rebels, who have rebelled against me. (P)They and their fathers have transgressed against me to this very day. The descendants also are (Q)impudent and stubborn: I send you to them, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God.’ And (R)whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are (S)a rebellious house) (T)they will know that a prophet has been among them. And you, son of man, (U)be not afraid of them, nor be afraid of their words, (V)though briers and thorns are with you and you sit on (W)scorpions.[d] Be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house. And you shall speak my words to them, (X)whether they hear or refuse to hear, for they are a rebellious house.

“But you, son of man, hear what I say to you. (Y)Be not rebellious like that rebellious house; open your mouth and (Z)eat what I give you.” And when I looked, behold, (AA)a hand was stretched out to me, and behold, (AB)a scroll of a book was in it. 10 And he spread it before me. And it had writing (AC)on the front and on the back, and there were written on it words of lamentation and mourning and woe.

Ezekiel’s Call to Be a Prophet

He said to me, “Son of man,[a](I) stand(J) up on your feet and I will speak to you.(K) As he spoke, the Spirit came into me and raised me(L) to my feet, and I heard him speaking to me.

He said: “Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have been in revolt against me to this very day.(M) The people to whom I am sending you are obstinate and stubborn.(N) Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says.’(O) And whether they listen or fail to listen(P)—for they are a rebellious people(Q)—they will know that a prophet has been among them.(R) And you, son of man, do not be afraid(S) of them or their words. Do not be afraid of what they say or be terrified by them, though they are a rebellious people.(U) You must speak(V) my words to them, whether they listen or fail to listen, for they are rebellious.(W) But you, son of man, listen to what I say to you. Do not rebel(X) like that rebellious people;(Y) open your mouth and eat(Z) what I give you.”

Then I looked, and I saw a hand(AA) stretched out to me. In it was a scroll,(AB) 10 which he unrolled before me. On both sides of it were written words of lament and mourning and woe.(AC)

  1. Ezekiel 2:1 The Hebrew phrase ben adam means human being. The phrase son of man is retained as a form of address here and throughout Ezekiel because of its possible association with “Son of Man” in the New Testament.
