見張り役としての責任
33 再び主からのことばがありました。
2 「人の子よ、あなたの同胞に告げよ。わたしがある国に軍隊を差し向けると、その国では見張りを立て、 3 敵軍の来襲を見て警報を鳴らす。 4 その時、警報を聞き流して死ぬ者がいても自業自得だ。 5 警告を聞いてもそれに従わなかったのだから、非は彼にある。警告に従っていたら、助かっただろう。 6 だが、見張り役が敵の来襲を見ながら警報を鳴らさず、警告もしなかったなら、人々の死の責任は見張り役にある。人々は自分の罪のために死ぬが、その死の責任は見張り役にある。わたしはその責任を問う。
7 人の子よ、あなたにも言う。わたしはあなたをイスラエルの見張り役とした。だから、わたしの語ることに耳を傾け、わたしに代わって彼らに警告せよ。 8 わたしが悪者に向かって、『悪者よ。おまえは必ず死ぬ』と言うとき、あなたがそれを伝えなければ、彼は悔い改めることをせず、その罪のために死んでいく。ただし、わたしはその死の責任をあなたに問う。 9 あなたが悪者に悔い改めるように警告しても、それを聞かないなら、彼は自分の罪のために死ぬ。しかし、あなたには何の責任もない。
10 イスラエルは、『自分たちの犯した罪が重くのしかかって、私たちはすっかりやせ衰えた。どうして生きていられよう』と嘆いている。 11 彼らに告げなさい。神である主がこう語る、と。わたしは生きている。わたしは悪者どもの死を喜ばない。それどころか、悪者が悪の道から悔い改めて生きるようになることを願っている。さあ帰って来なさい。悪の道から離れ、立ち返るのだ。ああ、イスラエルよ。なぜ、そんなにも死にたがるのか。
12 たとえ正しい行いをしていた人でも、罪を犯すなら、その人は救われない。どんな悪者も、その人が悔い改めて罪から身を引くなら、滅ぼされることはない。 13 わたしは『正しい人は生きる』と言った。しかし、今まで良いことをしてきたから大目に見てもらえるだろうと罪を犯す人には、以前の正しい行いは何の役にも立たない。わたしは、その罪のゆえに彼を滅ぼす。 14 また、わたしから『必ず死ぬ』と言われた悪者が、罪から身を引いて立ち返り、きよく正しいことを行うなら、 15 すなわち、質草を返し、盗んだ物を償い、正しい道を歩んで悪を行わないなら、彼は必ず生きる。決して死ぬことはない。 16 もう二度と、過去の罪によって責められることはない。正しい道に立ち返ったから、彼は必ず生きるのだ。
17 それでもイスラエルの民は、『主は公正ではない』と不平を鳴らす。問題は、そう言っている彼ら自身が正しくないことだ。 18 もう一度言う。正しい人でも、悪の道に入るなら、必ず死ぬ。 19 悪者でも、悪から身を引いて、きよく正しいことを行うなら、必ず生きる。 20 おまえたちは今も、『主は公正ではない』と非難している。わたしは、おまえたち一人一人を、その行いに従ってさばく。」
エルサレム陥落の知らせ
21 私たちが捕囚となってから十一年目の第十の月の五日に、エルサレムから逃げて来た者たちの一人が、「エルサレムが陥落した」と私に告げました。 22 その前夜、主の御手が私の上に置かれ、私を元気に立ち上がらせてくれました。それで、彼が到着した時には、再び語ることができるようにされていました。
23 そののち、次のような主のことばがありました。 24 「人の子よ。廃墟と化したユダの町々に残って散り散りに住んでいる者たちは、『アブラハムはたった一人で、この地を所有していた。これだけの者がいれば、この地を取り返せないはずはない』と息まいている。」 25 しかし、神である主はこう語ります。「おまえたちは悪いことをしているのだから、何の力もない。血がついたままの肉を食べ、偶像を礼拝し、人を殺している。それでも、わたしがその地を与えると思っているのか。 26 人を殺す者、偶像礼拝者、姦淫を行う者であるおまえたちが、この地を所有できるだろうか。」 27 彼らに告げよ、と主は語ります。「わたしは生きている。あの廃墟に住んでいる者は必ず剣に倒れる。原野に住んでいる者は野獣のえじきとなり、要害やほら穴にいる者は疫病にかかって死ぬ。 28 わたしはその地を荒廃させ、彼らの高慢の鼻をへし折り、その力にとどめを刺す。イスラエルの山地にある村々は荒れはて、通る人もいなくなる。 29 わたしが彼らの罪のゆえにその地を滅ぼす時、彼らはわたしが主であることを知る。
30 人の子よ。あなたの同胞は、あなたの陰口を言っている。家や戸口で、ひそひそ話している。『主がどんなことを言っているか、彼に聞いて楽しもう』と。 31 彼らはもっともらしい顔をしてやって来る。そして、あなたの前に座って聞くだろう。だが、わたしの言うとおりにする気はさらさらない。口では、いかにも調子よく、わたしを愛しているようなことを言うが、心は金銭欲でいっぱいだ。 32 彼らにとってあなたは、すてきな声で恋の歌を歌い、上手に楽器を奏でる人のようなものだ。ただ聞くのを楽しむだけで、言われたことを心に留めようとはしない。 33 しかし、先に語った恐ろしいことが全部起こると、それは必ず起こるが、その時になって初めて、彼らは自分たちの間に預言者がいたことを知る。」
神自らが羊飼いとなる
34 また、次のような主からのことばがありました。
2 「人の子よ、羊飼いであるイスラエルの指導者に預言せよ。彼らに言え。」神である主は語ります。「羊の世話はそっちのけで、私腹を肥やすことしか考えていない羊飼いは災いだ。羊飼いなら羊を養うべきではないか。 3 自分たちは最上の物を食べ、最高の衣をまといながら、群れの羊を飢えさせている。 4 弱い羊の面倒を見ず、病気の羊を介抱せず、骨を折った羊の手当てをせず、迷って行方不明になった羊を捜すこともない。それどころか、力ずくで残酷な支配をしてきた。 5 だから、羊は羊飼いがいないために散らされ、野獣のえじきとなってしまった。 6 わたしの羊は山々や丘など至るところをさまよったが、捜し出してくれる者も、世話してくれる者もいなかった。
7 それゆえ、羊飼いたち、主のことばを聞け。」
8 神である主はこう語ります。「わたしは生きている。おまえたちはわたしの羊を放り出し、野獣に襲われても助けようとしなかった。おまえたちはほんとうの羊飼いではなかった。だから、いなくなった羊を捜し出そうともしなかったのだ。自分はたらふく食べて、羊を平気で餓死させていた。 9-10 わたしは羊飼いたちに、わたしの羊の身に降りかかった災いの責任を問う。彼らにはもう羊を飼わせない。また、彼ら自身が食べることも許さない。わたしの羊を救い出す。彼らのえじきにはさせない。」
11 主は語ります。「わたしは自分の羊を必ず捜し出す。 12 羊飼いのように、わたしの群れを捜し回る。あの暗雲に包まれた日に散らされて行った所から、わたしの羊を捜し出し、救い出す。 13 いろいろな国や民族の中に散らされた彼らを、母国イスラエルへ連れ戻し、山や、よく肥えた川のほとりで養う。 14 そうだ、イスラエルの高原の良い牧場を与えよう。そこでは安心して身を横たえ、おいしい牧草を十分に食べることができる。 15-16 わたしが自ら羊飼いとなって、安心して休めるように世話をする。」主はこう語ります。「わたしは、道に迷っていなくなった者たちを捜し出し、無事に家へ連れ帰る。また、折れた骨には添え木を当て、傷には包帯を巻き、病気を治す。だが、権力をふるって肥えた羊飼いは滅ぼす。罰を下すことによって、彼らを養おう。」
17 わたしの群れ、わたしの民よ、と神である主は語ります。「わたしは子羊と子やぎとを、雄羊と雄やぎとを分ける。 18 ああ、悪い羊飼いども。牧場の最上の場所を自分のために取っておきながら、残りの場所を踏みにじるとはもってのほかだ。自分が澄んだ水をたっぷり飲むと、足でその水を濁らせているが、とんでもないことだ。 19 わたしの群れに残されたものは、踏みにじられた牧草と濁った水だけだ。」
20 それゆえ、神である主はこう語ります。「わたしは、この肥えた羊飼いとやせこけた羊との間をさばいて、黒白をはっきりさせる。 21 この羊飼いどもは、飢えて病気にかかったわたしの羊を圧迫し、突き倒し、むりやり遠くにまで散らしてしまったのだ。 22 それで、わたしは自分の手でわたしの群れを救い出す。もう二度と、いじめたり殺したりはさせない。わたしには、どれが肥えているか、どれがやせているか、その訳がはっきりわかっている。 23 わたしは、民全体を牧する一人の羊飼いを立てよう。それはわたしの忠実なしもべ、ダビデである。彼は羊飼いとなって、わたしの民を養う。 24 こうして、主であるわたしが彼らの神となり、わたしのしもべダビデは君主となる。主であるわたしがこう語ったのだ。
25 わたしは彼らと平和の契約を結び、危険な獣をこの国から追い払う。それで、民はどんな荒れ地でも安心して住み、森の中でも安らかに眠ることができる。 26 わたしの民と、わたしの丘の回りにある彼らの家々とを祝福しよう。そこに恵みの雨を降らせよう。季節ごとに雨を降らせる。 27 果樹は実をたわわにつけ、畑も豊作で、みな安心して日を送る。こうして、わたしが奴隷の鎖を断ち切り、金もうけのために酷使した者の手から彼らを解放する時、彼らはわたしが主であることを知る。 28 もう二度と、他国に征服されたり、野獣に襲われたりしない。だれからも脅かされず、安心して過ごすことができる。
29 わたしはイスラエルに、りっぱなぶどうの木（メシヤ）を生やす。わたしの国民は、二度とひもじい思いをしたり、異教徒に征服されて恥をかいたりはしない。 30 こうして、彼らは、神、主であるこのわたしが共におり、自分たちが神の民であることを知る。」主はこう語ります。 31 「おまえたちはわたしの羊、わたしの牧場の羊だ。おまえたちはわたしのもの、わたしはおまえたちの神だ。」
エドムについての預言
35 再び、次のような主からのことばがありました。 2 「人の子よ、セイル山の方を向き、そこに住む人々に預言せよ。」 3 神である主がこう語ります。
「わたしはおまえの敵となる。こぶしでおまえを打ち砕き、完全に滅ぼそう。 4-5 おまえがわたしの民イスラエルを憎んでいるので、町々を破壊し、荒れはてさせる。その時、おまえはわたしが神であることを知る。わたしがイスラエルの罪をきびしく罰し、彼らが窮地に立たされていた時、おまえは彼らを虐殺した。」
6 主は語ります。「わたしは生きている。そんなに血を流したいのなら、わたしがおまえを血に染めてやろう。今度はおまえが殺される番だ。 7 わたしはセイル山の住民を一掃する。逃げ出そうとする者も、引き返して来る者も一人残らず殺す。 8 山々を死体でいっぱいにする。丘も谷も川もみな、剣で殺された者で埋め尽くされる。 9 おまえが活気を取り戻すことは決してない。永久に見捨てられ、町々も再建されることがない。その時、おまえたちはわたしが主であることを知る。
10 おまえは、『イスラエルもユダも、われわれのものだ。占領してしまおう。神がいようがかまうものか』と言った。」 11 それゆえ、神である主はこう言います。「わたしは生きている。おまえが怒りにまかせてわたしの民にした数々の行為に仕返しする。ねたみと憎しみに駆られた、おまえの行為のすべてを必ず罰する。わたしがおまえにすることを見て、イスラエルはわたしをほめたたえるようになる。 12 その時、『神の民と言っても、力も何もあったものではない。われわれの格好のえじきだ』と悪口を言ったのを、わたしが聞いていたことをおまえは知る。 13 おまえは主に対して不遜なことばを吐いた。それをみな、わたしは聞いたのだ。 14 わたしがおまえの地を荒廃させる時、すべての国々は喜ぶだろう。 15 おまえはイスラエルの恐ろしい破滅を見て喜んだ。今わたしは、おまえの破滅を喜ぼう。ああ、セイル山の住民よ、エドムに住むすべての者よ。おまえたちは一掃されるのだ。その時、おまえたちはわたしが主であることを知る。

Renewal of Ezekiel’s Call as Watchman
33 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, speak to your people and say to them: ‘When I bring the sword(A) against a land, and the people of the land choose one of their men and make him their watchman,(B) 3 and he sees the sword coming against the land and blows the trumpet(C) to warn the people, 4 then if anyone hears the trumpet but does not heed the warning(D) and the sword comes and takes their life, their blood will be on their own head.(E) 5 Since they heard the sound of the trumpet but did not heed the warning, their blood will be on their own head.(F) If they had heeded the warning, they would have saved themselves.(G) 6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes someone’s life, that person’s life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.’(H)
7 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman(I) for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.(J) 8 When I say to the wicked, ‘You wicked person, you will surely die,(K)’ and you do not speak out to dissuade them from their ways, that wicked person will die for[a] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.(L) 9 But if you do warn the wicked person to turn from their ways and they do not do so,(M) they will die for their sin, though you yourself will be saved.(N)
10 “Son of man, say to the Israelites, ‘This is what you are saying: “Our offenses and sins weigh us down, and we are wasting away(O) because of[b] them. How then can we live?(P)”’ 11 Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live.(Q) Turn!(R) Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, people of Israel?’(S)
12 “Therefore, son of man, say to your people,(T) ‘If someone who is righteous disobeys, that person’s former righteousness will count for nothing. And if someone who is wicked repents, that person’s former wickedness will not bring condemnation. The righteous person who sins will not be allowed to live even though they were formerly righteous.’(U) 13 If I tell a righteous person that they will surely live, but then they trust in their righteousness and do evil, none of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered; they will die for the evil they have done.(V) 14 And if I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ but they then turn away from their sin and do what is just(W) and right— 15 if they give back what they took in pledge(X) for a loan, return what they have stolen,(Y) follow the decrees that give life, and do no evil—that person will surely live; they will not die.(Z) 16 None of the sins(AA) that person has committed will be remembered against them. They have done what is just and right; they will surely live.(AB)
17 “Yet your people say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ But it is their way that is not just. 18 If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and does evil,(AC) they will die for it.(AD) 19 And if a wicked person turns away from their wickedness and does what is just and right, they will live by doing so.(AE) 20 Yet you Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ But I will judge each of you according to your own ways.”(AF)
Jerusalem’s Fall Explained
21 In the twelfth year of our exile, in the tenth month on the fifth day, a man who had escaped(AG) from Jerusalem came to me and said, “The city has fallen!(AH)” 22 Now the evening before the man arrived, the hand of the Lord was on me,(AI) and he opened my mouth(AJ) before the man came to me in the morning. So my mouth was opened and I was no longer silent.(AK)
23 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 24 “Son of man, the people living in those ruins(AL) in the land of Israel are saying, ‘Abraham was only one man, yet he possessed the land. But we are many;(AM) surely the land has been given to us as our possession.’(AN) 25 Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Since you eat(AO) meat with the blood(AP) still in it and look to your idols and shed blood, should you then possess the land?(AQ) 26 You rely on your sword, you do detestable things,(AR) and each of you defiles his neighbor’s wife.(AS) Should you then possess the land?’
27 “Say this to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: As surely as I live, those who are left in the ruins will fall by the sword, those out in the country I will give to the wild animals to be devoured, and those in strongholds and caves will die of a plague.(AT) 28 I will make the land a desolate waste, and her proud strength will come to an end, and the mountains(AU) of Israel will become desolate so that no one will cross them.(AV) 29 Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I have made the land a desolate(AW) waste because of all the detestable things they have done.’(AX)
30 “As for you, son of man, your people are talking together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, saying to each other, ‘Come and hear the message that has come from the Lord.’ 31 My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before(AY) you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy(AZ) for unjust gain.(BA) 32 Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs(BB) with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice.(BC)
33 “When all this comes true—and it surely will—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.(BD)”
The Lord Will Be Israel’s Shepherd
34 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Woe to you shepherds of Israel who only take care of yourselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock?(BE) 3 You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock.(BF) 4 You have not strengthened the weak or healed(BG) the sick or bound up(BH) the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally.(BI) 5 So they were scattered because there was no shepherd,(BJ) and when they were scattered they became food for all the wild animals.(BK) 6 My sheep wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill.(BL) They were scattered(BM) over the whole earth, and no one searched or looked for them.(BN)
7 “‘Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 8 As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, because my flock lacks a shepherd and so has been plundered(BO) and has become food for all the wild animals,(BP) and because my shepherds did not search for my flock but cared for themselves rather than for my flock,(BQ) 9 therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 10 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against(BR) the shepherds and will hold them accountable for my flock. I will remove them from tending the flock so that the shepherds can no longer feed themselves. I will rescue(BS) my flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be food for them.(BT)
11 “‘For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep(BU) and look after them. 12 As a shepherd(BV) looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness.(BW) 13 I will bring them out from the nations and gather(BX) them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land.(BY) I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the settlements in the land.(BZ) 14 I will tend them in a good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel(CA) will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in good grazing land, and there they will feed in a rich pasture(CB) on the mountains of Israel.(CC) 15 I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down,(CD) declares the Sovereign Lord.(CE) 16 I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up(CF) the injured and strengthen the weak,(CG) but the sleek and the strong I will destroy.(CH) I will shepherd the flock with justice.(CI)
17 “‘As for you, my flock, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will judge between one sheep and another, and between rams and goats.(CJ) 18 Is it not enough(CK) for you to feed on the good pasture? Must you also trample the rest of your pasture with your feet?(CL) Is it not enough for you to drink clear water? Must you also muddy the rest with your feet? 19 Must my flock feed on what you have trampled and drink what you have muddied with your feet?
20 “‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says to them: See, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep.(CM) 21 Because you shove with flank and shoulder, butting all the weak sheep with your horns(CN) until you have driven them away, 22 I will save my flock, and they will no longer be plundered. I will judge between one sheep and another.(CO) 23 I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend(CP) them; he will tend them and be their shepherd.(CQ) 24 I the Lord will be their God,(CR) and my servant David(CS) will be prince among them.(CT) I the Lord have spoken.(CU)
25 “‘I will make a covenant(CV) of peace(CW) with them and rid the land of savage beasts(CX) so that they may live in the wilderness and sleep in the forests in safety.(CY) 26 I will make them and the places surrounding my hill a blessing.[c](CZ) I will send down showers in season;(DA) there will be showers of blessing.(DB) 27 The trees will yield their fruit(DC) and the ground will yield its crops;(DD) the people will be secure(DE) in their land. They will know that I am the Lord, when I break the bars of their yoke(DF) and rescue them from the hands of those who enslaved them.(DG) 28 They will no longer be plundered by the nations, nor will wild animals devour them. They will live in safety,(DH) and no one will make them afraid.(DI) 29 I will provide for them a land renowned(DJ) for its crops, and they will no longer be victims of famine(DK) in the land or bear the scorn(DL) of the nations.(DM) 30 Then they will know that I, the Lord their God, am with them and that they, the Israelites, are my people, declares the Sovereign Lord.(DN) 31 You are my sheep,(DO) the sheep of my pasture,(DP) and I am your God, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”
A Prophecy Against Edom
35 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir;(DQ) prophesy against it 3 and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Mount Seir, and I will stretch out my hand(DR) against you and make you a desolate waste.(DS) 4 I will turn your towns into ruins(DT) and you will be desolate. Then you will know that I am the Lord.(DU)
5 “‘Because you harbored an ancient hostility and delivered the Israelites over to the sword(DV) at the time of their calamity,(DW) the time their punishment reached its climax,(DX) 6 therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will give you over to bloodshed(DY) and it will pursue you.(DZ) Since you did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue you. 7 I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste(EA) and cut off from it all who come and go.(EB) 8 I will fill your mountains with the slain; those killed by the sword will fall on your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines.(EC) 9 I will make you desolate forever;(ED) your towns will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the Lord.(EE)
10 “‘Because you have said, “These two nations and countries will be ours and we will take possession(EF) of them,” even though I the Lord was there, 11 therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will treat you in accordance with the anger(EG) and jealousy you showed in your hatred of them and I will make myself known among them when I judge you.(EH) 12 Then you will know that I the Lord have heard all the contemptible things you have said against the mountains of Israel. You said, “They have been laid waste and have been given over to us to devour.(EI)” 13 You boasted(EJ) against me and spoke against me without restraint, and I heard it.(EK) 14 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate.(EL) 15 Because you rejoiced(EM) when the inheritance of Israel became desolate, that is how I will treat you. You will be desolate, Mount Seir,(EN) you and all of Edom.(EO) Then they will know that I am the Lord.’”

18 これらのことの後、私はもう一人の天使が、大きな権威を授けられて、天から下って来るのを見ました。地上は、その輝きで明るくなりました。 2 彼は大声で叫びました。「バビロンが倒れた。あの大いなるバビロンが倒れた。そこは悪魔の巣窟、悪霊やあらゆる汚れた霊のたまり場であった。 3 あらゆる国の人々が、彼女のみだらな毒ぶどう酒に酔いしれたからだ。また、地上の支配者たちは彼女と快楽にふけり、地上の商人たちは、彼女のぜいたくな浪費のおかげで大もうけをしたからだ。」
4 それから私は、天から別の声を聞きました。
「クリスチャンよ。あの女から遠ざかりなさい。その罪に連なってはなりません。そうでないと、いっしょに罰を受けることになります。 5 あの女の罪は数えきれず、それは積み上げられて天にまで達したので、神の罰がいよいよ下るのです。 6 あなたがたは、彼女から受けた仕打ちをそっくりそのまま、いや、二倍にして返しなさい。彼女は人々に、多くの災いの飲み物を飲ませようとたくらみました。それを倍にして彼女に飲ませなさい。 7 ぜいたく三昧に遊び暮らした女に、それに見合うだけの苦しみと悲しみとを与えなさい。彼女はおごっています。『私は女王で、身寄りのない未亡人とは違う。悲しみなど知らない。』 8 そのため、たった一日のうちに、死の悲しみと嘆きと飢えとに襲われ、焼き滅ぼされてしまうのです。さばきをなさる主は、力ある偉大なお方だからです。 9 彼女の不純な行為に手を貸し、多くの分け前をもらって、ぜいたくの限りを尽くした地上の支配者たちは、その焼けこげた死体から立ちのぼる煙を見て、涙にくれるでしょう。 10 そして、恐怖に震えながら、遠巻きにして立ち、『ああ、悲しいことだ。力ある都バビロンよ。あなたへのさばきは、一瞬のうちに下った』と叫ぶでしょう。
11 また、彼女から富を得ていた地上の商人たちも泣き悲しむでしょう。もはや、彼らの商品を買う人がいなくなったからです。 12 商品とは、金、銀、宝石、真珠、上等の麻布、紫布、絹、緋色（真紅）の布、種々の香木、象牙細工、高価な木彫り、青銅、鉄、大理石、 13 肉桂、香水、香料、香油、乳香、ぶどう酒、オリーブ油、上質の小麦粉、小麦、牛、羊、馬、戦車、奴隷に及び、さらには人の命までも商ったのです。 14 地上の商人たちは嘆きます。『あなたの高価な秘蔵品は、全部その手から奪い去られた。あれほど自慢だった、ぜいを尽くした生活はもう二度とできない。すべては永久に失われたのだから。』 15 それらの品を商って、彼女から富を得ていた彼らは、わが身への危険を恐れて、遠く離れて立ち、泣き悲しむでしょう。 16-17 『ああ、悲しいことだ。あんなに美しかった大いなる都が、あっという間に荒れ果ててしまった。最高級の紫布と緋色の布をまとい、金や宝石や真珠で飾りたてていた都よ。そのすべての富も一瞬のうちに消えてしまった。』
また、各国の船主や商船の船長、乗組員も遠くから、 18 彼女が焼かれる煙を見て、涙ながらに、『あれほどすばらしい都が、この世にあっただろうか』と嘆くでしょう。 19 そして、頭にちりをかぶって悲しむのです。『ああ、大いなる都よ。その有り余る富のおかげで、われわれは大金持ちになれたのに。それが何もかも、一瞬のうちに失われてしまった。』 20 しかし、天よ、神の子どもよ、預言者よ、使徒よ。彼女の最期を喜びなさい。ついに神は、あなたがたのために、彼女にさばきを下されたのです。」
21 その時、一人の強い天使が、ひき臼のような丸い石を持ち上げ、海に放り投げて叫びました。「大いなる都バビロンは、この石のように投げ捨てられ、もはや、永久に浮かび上がりません。 22 歌声はとだえ、竪琴や笛、ラッパの音ももう聞こえません。さまざまな産業はすたれ、ひき臼をひく人影も、二度と見ることはありません。 23 夜は真っ暗闇で、窓からは明かりももれず、結婚式の喜びの鐘も、花婿と花嫁の楽しそうな声も聞こえません。その名を世界に鳴りとどろかせた商人たちも、鳴りをひそめます。彼らは、すべての国の人々をたぶらかす彼女の魔術のおかげで、もうけていたのです。 24 彼女には、殉教したすべての預言者や神のきよい民の、血の責任が問われるのです。」

Lament Over Fallen Babylon
18 After this I saw another angel(A) coming down from heaven.(B) He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor.(C) 2 With a mighty voice he shouted:
“‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’[a](D)
She has become a dwelling for demons
and a haunt for every impure spirit,(E)
a haunt for every unclean bird,
a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.(F)
3 For all the nations have drunk
the maddening wine of her adulteries.(G)
The kings of the earth committed adultery with her,(H)
and the merchants of the earth grew rich(I) from her excessive luxuries.”(J)
Warning to Escape Babylon’s Judgment
4 Then I heard another voice from heaven say:
“‘Come out of her, my people,’[b](K)
so that you will not share in her sins,
so that you will not receive any of her plagues;(L)
5 for her sins are piled up to heaven,(M)
and God has remembered(N) her crimes.
6 Give back to her as she has given;
pay her back(O) double(P) for what she has done.
Pour her a double portion from her own cup.(Q)
7 Give her as much torment and grief
as the glory and luxury she gave herself.(R)
In her heart she boasts,
‘I sit enthroned as queen.
I am not a widow;[c]
I will never mourn.’(S)
8 Therefore in one day(T) her plagues will overtake her:
death, mourning and famine.
She will be consumed by fire,(U)
for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.
Threefold Woe Over Babylon’s Fall
9 “When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her(V) and shared her luxury(W) see the smoke of her burning,(X) they will weep and mourn over her.(Y) 10 Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off(Z) and cry:
11 “The merchants(AC) of the earth will weep and mourn(AD) over her because no one buys their cargoes anymore(AE)— 12 cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble;(AF) 13 cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and human beings sold as slaves.(AG)
14 “They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’ 15 The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her(AH) will stand far off,(AI) terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn(AJ) 16 and cry out:
“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(AK)
dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet,
and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!(AL)
17 In one hour(AM) such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’(AN)
“Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea,(AO) will stand far off.(AP) 18 When they see the smoke of her burning,(AQ) they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city(AR)?’(AS) 19 They will throw dust on their heads,(AT) and with weeping and mourning(AU) cry out:
“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(AV)
where all who had ships on the sea
became rich through her wealth!
In one hour she has been brought to ruin!’(AW)
20 “Rejoice over her, you heavens!(AX)
Rejoice, you people of God!
Rejoice, apostles and prophets!
For God has judged her
with the judgment she imposed on you.”(AY)
The Finality of Babylon’s Doom
21 Then a mighty angel(AZ) picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea,(BA) and said:
“With such violence
the great city(BB) of Babylon will be thrown down,
never to be found again.
22 The music of harpists and musicians, pipers and trumpeters,
will never be heard in you again.(BC)
No worker of any trade
will ever be found in you again.
The sound of a millstone
will never be heard in you again.(BD)
23 The light of a lamp
will never shine in you again.
The voice of bridegroom and bride
will never be heard in you again.(BE)
Your merchants were the world’s important people.(BF)
By your magic spell(BG) all the nations were led astray.
24 In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy people,(BH)
of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.”(BI)
