Judgment on Israel’s Enemies

Gather together, gather,
    O shameless nation,(A)
before you are driven away[a]
    like the drifting chaff,[b]
before there comes upon you
    the fierce anger of the Lord,
before there comes upon you
    the day of the Lord’s wrath.(B)
Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land
    who do his commands;
seek righteousness, seek humility;
    perhaps you may be hidden
    on the day of the Lord’s wrath.(C)
For Gaza shall be deserted,
    and Ashkelon shall become a desolation;
Ashdod’s people shall be driven out at noon,
    and Ekron shall be uprooted.(D)

Woe, inhabitants of the seacoast,
    you nation of the Cherethites!
The word of the Lord is against you,
    O Canaan, land of the Philistines,
    and I will destroy you until no inhabitant is left.(E)
And you, O seacoast, shall be pastures,
    meadows for shepherds,
    and folds for flocks.(F)
The seacoast shall become the possession
    of the remnant of the house of Judah,
    on which they shall pasture,
and in the houses of Ashkelon
    they shall lie down at evening.
For the Lord their God will be mindful of them
    and restore their fortunes.(G)

I have heard the taunts of Moab
    and the revilings of the Ammonites,
how they have taunted my people
    and made boasts against their territory.(H)
Therefore, as I live, says the Lord of hosts,
    the God of Israel,
Moab shall become like Sodom
    and the Ammonites like Gomorrah,
a land possessed by nettles and salt pits
    and a waste forever.
The remnant of my people shall plunder them,
    and the survivors of my nation shall possess them.(I)
10 This shall be their lot in return for their pride,
    because they scoffed and boasted
    against the people of the Lord of hosts.(J)
11 The Lord will be terrible against them;
    he will shrivel all the gods of the earth,
and to him shall bow down
    each in its place,
    all the coasts and islands of the nations.(K)

12 You also, O Cushites,
    shall be killed by my sword.(L)

13 And he will stretch out his hand against the north
    and destroy Assyria,
and he will make Nineveh a desolation,
    a dry waste like the desert.(M)
14 Herds shall lie down in it,
    every wild animal of the earth;[c]
the desert owl[d] and the screech owl[e]
    shall lodge on its capitals;
the owl[f] shall hoot at the window,
    the raven[g] croak on the threshold,
    for its cedar work will be laid bare.(N)
15 Is this the exultant city
    that lived secure,
that said to itself,
    “I am, and there is no one else”?
What a desolation it has become,
    a lair for wild animals!
Everyone who passes by it
    hisses and shakes the fist.(O)

The words of Amos, who was among the shepherds of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of King Uzziah of Judah and in the days of King Jeroboam son of Joash of Israel, two years[a] before the earthquake.(A)

Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors

And he said:

The Lord roars from Zion
    and utters his voice from Jerusalem;
the pastures of the shepherds wither,
    and the top of Carmel dries up.(B)

Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of Damascus,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,[b]
because they have threshed Gilead
    with threshing sledges of iron.(C)
So I will send a fire on the house of Hazael,
    and it shall devour the strongholds of Ben-hadad.(D)
I will break the gate bars of Damascus
    and cut off the inhabitants from the Valley of Aven
and the one who holds the scepter from Beth-eden,
    and the people of Aram shall go into exile to Kir,
            says the Lord.(E)

Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of Gaza,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,[c]
because they carried into exile entire communities,
    to hand them over to Edom.(F)
So I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza,
    and it shall devour its strongholds.
I will cut off the inhabitants from Ashdod
    and the one who holds the scepter from Ashkelon;
I will turn my hand against Ekron,
    and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish,
            says the Lord God.(G)

Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of Tyre,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,[d]
because they delivered entire communities over to Edom
    and did not remember the covenant of kinship.(H)
10 So I will send a fire on the wall of Tyre,
    and it shall devour its strongholds.(I)

11 Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of Edom,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,[e]
because he pursued his brother with the sword
    and cast off all pity;
he maintained his anger perpetually[f]
    and kept his wrath[g] forever.(J)
12 So I will send a fire on Teman,
    and it shall devour the strongholds of Bozrah.(K)

13 Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of the Ammonites,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,[h]
because they have ripped open pregnant women in Gilead
    in order to enlarge their territory.(L)
14 So I will kindle a fire against the wall of Rabbah,
    and it shall devour its strongholds,
with shouting on the day of battle,
    with a storm on the day of the whirlwind;(M)
15 then their king shall go into exile,
    he and his officials together,
            says the Lord.(N)

Proclamation against Ammon

25 The word of the Lord came to me: Mortal, set your face toward the Ammonites and prophesy against them.(A) Say to the Ammonites: Hear the word of the Lord God: Thus says the Lord God: Because you said, “Aha!” over my sanctuary when it was profaned and over the land of Israel when it was made desolate and over the house of Judah when it went into exile,(B) therefore I am handing you over to the people of the East for a possession. They shall set their encampments among you and pitch their tents in your midst; they shall eat your fruit, and they shall drink your milk. I will make Rabbah a pasture for camels and Ammon a fold for flocks. Then you shall know that I am the Lord.(C) For thus says the Lord God: Because you have clapped your hands and stamped your feet and rejoiced with all the malice within you against the land of Israel,(D) therefore I have stretched out my hand against you and will hand you over as plunder to the nations. I will cut you off from the peoples and will make you perish out of the countries; I will destroy you. Then you shall know that I am the Lord.(E)

Proclamation against Moab

Thus says the Lord God: Because Moab[a] said, “The house of Judah is like all the other nations,” therefore I will lay open the flank of Moab from the towns[b] on its frontier, the glory of the country, Beth-jeshimoth, Baal-meon, and Kiriathaim. 10 I will give it along with Ammon to the people of the East as a possession. Thus Ammon shall be remembered no more among the nations, 11 and I will execute judgments upon Moab. Then they shall know that I am the Lord.

Proclamation against Edom

12 Thus says the Lord God: Because Edom acted revengefully against the house of Judah and has grievously offended in taking vengeance upon them,(F) 13 therefore thus says the Lord God: I will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off from it humans and animals, and I will make it desolate; from Teman even to Dedan they shall fall by the sword.(G) 14 I will lay my vengeance upon Edom by the hand of my people Israel, and they shall act in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath, and they shall know my vengeance, says the Lord God.(H)

Proclamation against Philistia

15 Thus says the Lord God: Because with unending hostilities the Philistines acted in vengeance and with malice of heart took revenge in destruction,(I) 16 therefore thus says the Lord God: I will stretch out my hand against the Philistines, cut off the Cherethites, and destroy the rest of the seacoast.(J) 17 I will execute great vengeance on them with wrathful punishments. Then they shall know that I am the Lord, when I lay my vengeance on them.(K)

Judgment on the Philistines

47 The word of the Lord that came to the prophet Jeremiah concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh attacked Gaza:(A)

Thus says the Lord:
See, waters are rising out of the north
    and shall become an overflowing torrent;
they shall overflow the land and all that fills it,
    the city and those who live in it.
People shall cry out,
    and all the inhabitants of the land shall wail.(B)
At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his stallions,
    at the clatter of his chariots, at the rumbling of their wheels,
parents do not turn back for children,
    so feeble are their hands,(C)
because of the day that is coming
    to destroy all the Philistines,
to cut off from Tyre and Sidon
    every helper that remains.
For the Lord is destroying the Philistines,
    the remnant of the coastland of Caphtor.(D)
Baldness has come upon Gaza;
    Ashkelon is silenced.
O remnant of Anakim![a]
    How long will you gash yourselves?(E)
Ah, sword of the Lord!
    How long until you are quiet?
Put yourself into your scabbard;
    rest and be still!(F)
How can it[b] be quiet,
    when the Lord has given it an order?
Against Ashkelon and against the seashore—
    there he has appointed it.(G)

The Cup of God’s Wrath

15 For thus the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: Take from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it.(A) 16 They shall drink and stagger and go out of their minds because of the sword that I am sending among them.(B)

17 So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand and made all the nations to whom the Lord sent me drink it: 18 Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a desolation and a waste, an object of hissing and of cursing, as they are today;(C) 19 Pharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his officials, and all his people; 20 all the mixed people;[a] all the kings of the land of Uz; all the kings of the land of the Philistines—Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod;(D) 21 Edom, Moab, and the Ammonites;(E) 22 all the kings of Tyre, all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the coastland across the sea;(F) 23 Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all who have shaved temples;(G) 24 all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the mixed peoples[b] that live in the desert;(H) 25 all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of Media; 26 all the kings of the north, far and near, one after another, and all the kingdoms of the world that are on the face of the earth. And after them the king of Sheshach[c] shall drink.(I)

27 Then you shall say to them, Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Drink; get drunk and vomit; fall and rise no more because of the sword that I am sending among you.(J)

28 And if they refuse to accept the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord of hosts: You must drink! 29 See, I am beginning to bring disaster on the city that is called by my name, and how can you possibly avoid punishment? You shall not go unpunished, for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth, says the Lord of hosts.(K)
