⁶ But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, ^(A)he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.’

¹⁸ When I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man ^(A)shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. ¹⁹ Yet, if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; ^(B)but you have delivered your soul.

²⁰ “Again, when a ^(C)righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die; because you did not give him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; but his blood I will require at your hand.

⁸ When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you shall surely die!’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. ⁹ Nevertheless if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have ^[a]delivered your soul.

¹¹ How much more, when wicked men have killed a righteous person in his own house on his bed? Therefore, shall I not now ^(A)require his ^[a]blood at your hand and ^[b]remove you from the earth?”

²² And Reuben answered them, saying, ^(A)“Did I not speak to you, saying, ‘Do not sin against the boy’; and you would not listen? Therefore behold, his blood is now ^(B)required of us.”

^20 (A)The soul who sins shall die. ^(B)The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. ^(C)The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, ^(D)and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.

⁵ Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; ^(A)from the hand of every beast I will require it, and ^(B)from the hand of man. From the hand of every ^(C)man’s brother I will require the life of man.

Jesus Predicts His Departure

²¹ Then Jesus said to them again, “I am going away, and ^(A)you will seek Me, and ^(B)will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come.”

²² So the Jews said, “Will He kill Himself, because He says, ‘Where I go you cannot come’?”

²³ And He said to them, ^(C)“You are from beneath; I am from above. ^(D)You are of this world; I am not of this world. ^24 (E)Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; ^(F)for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”

¹⁰ Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I am ^(A)against the shepherds, and ^(B)I will require My flock at their hand; I will cause them to cease feeding the sheep, and the shepherds shall ^(C)feed themselves no more; for I will ^(D)deliver My flock from their mouths, that they may no longer be food for them.”
