⁶ But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes someone’s life, that person’s life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.’^(A)

¹⁸ When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,^(A)’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for^[a] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.^{(B) 19} But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn^(C) from their wickedness^(D) or from their evil ways, they will die^(E) for their sin; but you will have saved yourself.^(F)

²⁰ “Again, when a righteous person turns^(G) from their righteousness and does evil, and I put a stumbling block^(H) before them, they will die. Since you did not warn them, they will die for their sin. The righteous things that person did will not be remembered, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.^(I)

⁸ When I say to the wicked, ‘You wicked person, you will surely die,^(A)’ and you do not speak out to dissuade them from their ways, that wicked person will die for^[a] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.^{(B) 9} But if you do warn the wicked person to turn from their ways and they do not do so,^(C) they will die for their sin, though you yourself will be saved.^(D)

¹¹ How much more—when wicked men have killed an innocent man in his own house and on his own bed—should I not now demand his blood^(A) from your hand and rid the earth of you!”

²² Reuben replied, “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy?^(A) But you wouldn’t listen! Now we must give an accounting^(B) for his blood.”^(C)

²⁰ The one who sins is the one who will die.^(A) The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.^(B)

⁵ And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting.^(A) I will demand an accounting from every animal.^(B) And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being.^(C)

Dispute Over Who Jesus Is

²¹ Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die^(A) in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”^(B)

²² This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”

²³ But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.^{(C) 24} I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he,^(D) you will indeed die in your sins.”

¹⁰ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against^(A) the shepherds and will hold them accountable for my flock. I will remove them from tending the flock so that the shepherds can no longer feed themselves. I will rescue^(B) my flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be food for them.^(C)
