⁷ But the house of Israel will not be willing to listen to you, for they are not willing to listen to me, because all the house of Israel have a hard forehead and a stubborn heart.^(A)

⁴ The descendants are impudent and stubborn. I am sending you to them, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God.’^(A)

¹⁶ “Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”^(A)

⁷ and the Lord said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.^(A)

²⁰ Remember the word that I said to you, ‘Slaves are not greater than their master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also.^{(A) 21} But they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.^{(B) 22} If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.^{(C) 23} Whoever hates me hates my Father also.^{(D) 24} If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not have sin. But now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.^(E)

⁴⁰ Yet you refuse to come to me to have life. ⁴¹ I do not accept glory from humans. ⁴² But I know that you do not have the love of God in^[a] you. ⁴³ I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; if another comes in his own name, you will accept him. ⁴⁴ How can you believe when you accept glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the one who alone is God?^{[b](A) 45} Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; your accuser is Moses, on whom you have set your hope.^{(B) 46} If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.^{(C) 47} But if you do not believe what he wrote, how will you believe what I say?”

¹⁴ But the citizens of his country hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to rule over us.’

³⁴ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!^(A)

¹⁶ “As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, we are not going to listen to you.^(A)
