(A)Behold, you are trusting in Egypt, that broken reed of a staff, which will pierce the hand of any man who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.

26 (A)And they shall dwell securely in it, and they shall build houses and plant vineyards. They shall dwell securely, (B)when I execute judgments upon all their neighbors (C)who have treated them with contempt. (D)Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.”

“Behold, (A)I am against you, O Sidon,
    and (B)I will manifest my glory in your midst.
And (C)they shall know that I am the Lord
    (D)when I execute judgments in her
    and (E)manifest my holiness in her;
23 for I will send (F)pestilence into her,
    and blood into her streets;
and the slain shall fall in her midst,
    by the sword that is against her on every side.
Then they will know that I am the Lord.

24 “And for the house of Israel (G)there shall be no more a brier to prick or (H)a thorn to hurt them among all their neighbors (I)who have treated them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.

Woe to Those Who Go Down to Egypt

31 Woe[a] to (A)those who go down to Egypt for help
    and rely on horses,
who (B)trust in chariots because they are many
    and in horsemen because they are very strong,
but (C)do not look to the Holy One of Israel
    or consult the Lord!
And (D)yet he is wise and brings disaster;
    (E)he does not call back his words,
but (F)will arise against the house of the evildoers
    and against the helpers of (G)those who work iniquity.
The Egyptians are man, and not God,
    and their horses (H)are flesh, and not spirit.
When the Lord stretches out his hand,
    the helper will stumble, and he who is helped will fall,
    and they will all perish together.

  1. Isaiah 31:1 Or Ah,

(A)who set out to go down to Egypt,
    without asking for my direction,
to take refuge in the protection of Pharaoh
    and to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt!
(B)Therefore shall the protection of Pharaoh turn to your shame,
    and the shelter in the shadow of Egypt to your humiliation.
For though his officials are at (C)Zoan
    and (D)his envoys reach (E)Hanes,
everyone comes to shame
    through (F)a people that cannot profit them,
that brings neither help nor profit,
    but shame and disgrace.”

An (G)oracle on (H)the beasts of (I)the Negeb.

Through a land of trouble and anguish,
    from where come the lioness and the lion,
    the adder and the (J)flying fiery serpent,
they carry their riches on the backs of donkeys,
    and their treasures on the humps of camels,
    to a people that cannot profit them.
Egypt's (K)help is worthless and empty;
    therefore I have called her
    (L)“Rahab who sits still.”
