³⁶ The merchants among the peoples hiss at you;
    you have come to a dreadful end
    and shall be no more forever.”^(A)

¹⁶ making their land a horror,
    a thing to be hissed at forever.
All who pass by it are horrified
    and shake their heads.^(A)

¹⁵ Is this the exultant city
    that lived secure,
that said to itself,
    “I am, and there is no one else”?
What a desolation it has become,
    a lair for wild animals!
Everyone who passes by it
    hisses and shakes the fist.^(A)

³⁶ Again I^[a] passed by, and they were no more;
    though I sought them, they could not be found.^(A)

¹⁴ I will make you a bare rock;
    you shall be a place for spreading nets.
You shall never again be rebuilt,
    for I the Lord have spoken,
    says the Lord God.
