³⁹ For when they had slaughtered their children for their idols, on the same day they came into my sanctuary to profane it. This is what they did in my house.^(A)

⁴ He built altars in the house of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, “In Jerusalem I will put my name.”^(A)

⁷ in admitting foreigners, uncircumcised in heart and flesh, to be in my sanctuary, profaning my temple when you offer to me my food, the fat and the blood. You^[a] have broken my covenant with all your abominations.^(A)

Jesus before Pilate

²⁸ Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to Pilate’s headquarters. It was early in the morning. They themselves did not enter the headquarters, so as to avoid ritual defilement and to be able to eat the Passover.^(A)

³⁸ Moreover, this they have done to me: they have defiled my sanctuary on the same day and profaned my Sabbaths.

¹⁵ What right has my beloved in my house, when she has done vile deeds? Can vows^[a] and sacrificial flesh avert your doom? Can you then exult?^(A)

⁸ Here you are, trusting in deceptive words to no avail.^{(A) 9} Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known^{(B) 10} and then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, “We are safe!”—only to go on doing all these abominations?^{(C) 11} Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your sight? I, too, am watching, says the Lord.^(D)
