¹⁴ Again, ^(A)when I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ if he turns from his sin and does ^[a]what is lawful and ^[b]right,

⁷ Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.

² By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and ^(A)keep His commandments. ^3 (B)For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And ^(C)His commandments are not burdensome. ⁴ For ^(D)whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that ^(E)has overcome the world—^[a]our faith. ⁵ Who is he who overcomes the world, but ^(F)he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

^29 (A)If you know that He is righteous, you know that ^(B)everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.

The Test of Knowing Him

³ Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.

Faith Without Works Is Dead^(A)

^14 (B)What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? ^15 (C)If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, ¹⁶ and ^(D)one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? ¹⁷ Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

¹⁸ But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” ^(E)Show me your faith without ^[a]your works, ^(F)and I will show you my faith by ^[b]my works. ¹⁹ You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! ²⁰ But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is ^[c]dead? ²¹ Was not Abraham our father justified by works ^(G)when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? ²² Do you see ^(H)that faith was working together with his works, and by ^(I)works faith was made ^[d]perfect? ²³ And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, ^(J)“Abraham believed God, and it was ^[e]accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called ^(K)the friend of God. ²⁴ You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.

²⁵ Likewise, ^(L)was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?

²⁶ For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

²² But ^(A)be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. ²³ For ^(B)if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; ²⁴ for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. ²⁵ But ^(C)he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, ^(D)this one will be blessed in what he does.

⁷ eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; ⁸ but to those who are self-seeking and ^(A)do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, ⁹ tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew ^(B)first and also of the ^[a]Greek; ^10 (C)but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
