¹¹ who does any of these things (though his father^[a] does none of them), who eats upon the mountains, defiles his neighbor’s wife,

¹⁴ Blessed are those who wash their robes,^[a] so that they will have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by the gates.

²² and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commandments and do what pleases him.^(A)

¹⁷ So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.

⁹ As for the things that you have learned and received and heard and noticed in me, do them, and the God of peace will be with you.^(A)

¹⁴ You are my friends if you do what I command you.^(A)

¹⁷ If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

Concerning Self-Deception

²¹ “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.^{(A) 22} On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’^{(B) 23} Then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; go away from me, you who behave lawlessly.’^(C)

Hearers and Doers

²⁴ “Everyone, then, who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.^{(D) 25} The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall because it had been founded on rock. ²⁶ And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. ²⁷ The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its fall!”
