⁴ On the day you were born^(A) your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to make you clean, nor were you rubbed with salt or wrapped in cloths.

¹⁵ Remember that you were slaves^(A) in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you.^(B) That is why I give you this command today.

¹³ Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years^(A) your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved^(B) and mistreated there.

⁶ God spoke to him in this way: ‘For four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated.^{(A) 7} But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,’ God said, ‘and afterward they will come out of that country and worship me in this place.’^[a](B)

¹² This will be a sign^(A) to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

⁷ and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

¹³ “‘Yet the people of Israel rebelled^(A) against me in the wilderness. They did not follow my decrees but rejected my laws^(B)—by which the person who obeys them will live—and they utterly desecrated my Sabbaths.^(C) So I said I would pour out my wrath^(D) on them and destroy^(E) them in the wilderness.^(F)
