More Wicked than Samaria and Sodom

44 “Indeed everyone who quotes proverbs will use this proverb against you: ‘Like mother, like daughter!’ 45 You are your mother’s daughter, [a]loathing husband and children; and you are the (A)sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and children; (B)your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.

46 “Your elder sister is Samaria, who dwells with her daughters to the north of you; and (C)your younger sister, who dwells to the south of you, is Sodom and her daughters. 47 You did not walk in their ways nor act according to their abominations; but, as if that were too little, (D)you became more corrupt than they in all your ways.

But he did evil in the sight of the Lord, according to the (A)abominations of the nations whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel. For he rebuilt the [a]high places which Hezekiah his father had (B)broken down; he raised up altars for the Baals, and (C)made wooden images; and he worshiped (D)all [b]the host of heaven and served them. He also built altars in the house of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, (E)“In Jerusalem shall My name be forever.” And he built altars for all the host of heaven (F)in the two courts of the house of the Lord. (G)Also he caused his sons to pass through the fire in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom; he practiced (H)soothsaying, used witchcraft and sorcery, and (I)consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger. (J)He even set a carved image, the idol which he had made, in the [c]house of God, of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son, (K)“In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put My name forever; (L)and I will not again remove the foot of Israel from the land which I have appointed for your fathers—only if they are careful to do all that I have commanded them, according to the whole law and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses.” So Manasseh seduced Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to do more evil than the nations whom the Lord had destroyed before the children of Israel.

11 There they burned incense on all the high places, like the nations whom the Lord had carried away before them; and they did wicked things to provoke the Lord to anger, 12 for they served idols, (A)of which the Lord had said to them, (B)“You shall not do this thing.”

13 Yet the Lord testified against Israel and against Judah, by all of His (C)prophets, (D)every seer, saying, (E)“Turn from your evil ways, and keep My commandments and My statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by My servants the prophets.” 14 Nevertheless they would not hear, but (F)stiffened their necks, like the necks of their fathers, who (G)did not believe in the Lord their God. 15 And they (H)rejected His statutes (I)and His covenant that He had made with their fathers, and His testimonies which He had testified against them; they followed (J)idols, (K)became idolaters, and went after the nations who were all around them, concerning whom the Lord had charged them that they should (L)not do like them. 16 So they left all the commandments of the Lord their God, (M)made for themselves a molded image and two calves, (N)made a wooden image and worshiped all the (O)host of heaven, (P)and served Baal. 17 (Q)And they caused their sons and daughters to pass through the fire, (R)practiced witchcraft and soothsaying, and (S)sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger. 18 Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel, and removed them from His sight; there was none left (T)but the tribe of Judah alone.

19 Also (U)Judah did not keep the commandments of the Lord their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made. 20 And the Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel, afflicted them, and (V)delivered them into the hand of plunderers, until He had cast them from His (W)sight. 21 For (X)He tore Israel from the house of David, and (Y)they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king. Then Jeroboam drove Israel from following the Lord, and made them commit a great sin. 22 For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they did not depart from them, 23 until the Lord removed Israel out of His sight, (Z)as He had said by all His servants the prophets. (AA)So Israel was carried away from their own land to Assyria, as it is to this day.
