While they were out killing, I was all alone. I fell face down on the ground and cried out, “O Sovereign Lord! Will your fury against Jerusalem wipe out everyone left in Israel?”

Then he said to me, “The sins of the people of Israel and Judah are very, very great. The entire land is full of murder; the city is filled with injustice. They are saying, ‘The Lord doesn’t see it! The Lord has abandoned the land!’

“Son of man,” he said, “do you see what they are doing? Do you see the detestable sins the people of Israel are committing to drive me from my Temple? But come, and you will see even more detestable sins than these!” Then he brought me to the door of the Temple courtyard, where I could see a hole in the wall. He said to me, “Now, son of man, dig into the wall.” So I dug into the wall and found a hidden doorway.

“Go in,” he said, “and see the wicked and detestable sins they are committing in there!” 10 So I went in and saw the walls covered with engravings of all kinds of crawling animals and detestable creatures. I also saw the various idols[a] worshiped by the people of Israel. 11 Seventy leaders of Israel were standing there with Jaazaniah son of Shaphan in the center. Each of them held an incense burner, from which a cloud of incense rose above their heads.

12 Then the Lord said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the leaders of Israel are doing with their idols in dark rooms? They are saying, ‘The Lord doesn’t see us; he has deserted our land!’” 13 Then the Lord added, “Come, and I will show you even more detestable sins than these!”

14 He brought me to the north gate of the Lord’s Temple, and some women were sitting there, weeping for the god Tammuz. 15 “Have you seen this?” he asked. “But I will show you even more detestable sins than these!”

16 Then he brought me into the inner courtyard of the Lord’s Temple. At the entrance to the sanctuary, between the entry room and the bronze altar, there were about twenty-five men with their backs to the sanctuary of the Lord. They were facing east, bowing low to the ground, worshiping the sun!

17 “Have you seen this, son of man?” he asked. “Is it nothing to the people of Judah that they commit these detestable sins, leading the whole nation into violence, thumbing their noses at me, and provoking my anger? 18 Therefore, I will respond in fury. I will neither pity nor spare them. And though they cry for mercy, I will not listen.”

  1. 8:10 The Hebrew term (literally round things) probably alludes to dung.

And he said to me, “Son of man, do you see what they are doing—the utterly detestable(A) things the Israelites are doing here, things that will drive me far from my sanctuary?(B) But you will see things that are even more detestable.”

Then he brought me to the entrance to the court. I looked, and I saw a hole in the wall. He said to me, “Son of man, now dig into the wall.” So I dug into the wall and saw a doorway there.

And he said to me, “Go in and see the wicked and detestable things they are doing here.” 10 So I went in and looked, and I saw portrayed all over the walls(C) all kinds of crawling things and unclean(D) animals and all the idols of Israel.(E) 11 In front of them stood seventy elders(F) of Israel, and Jaazaniah son of Shaphan was standing among them. Each had a censer(G) in his hand, and a fragrant cloud of incense(H) was rising.(I)

12 He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of Israel are doing in the darkness,(J) each at the shrine of his own idol? They say, ‘The Lord does not see(K) us; the Lord has forsaken the land.’” 13 Again, he said, “You will see them doing things that are even more detestable.”

14 Then he brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the house of the Lord, and I saw women sitting there, mourning the god Tammuz.(L) 15 He said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? You will see things that are even more detestable than this.”

16 He then brought me into the inner court(M) of the house of the Lord, and there at the entrance to the temple, between the portico and the altar,(N) were about twenty-five men. With their backs toward the temple of the Lord and their faces toward the east, they were bowing down to the sun(O) in the east.(P)

17 He said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a trivial matter for the people of Judah to do the detestable things(Q) they are doing here? Must they also fill the land with violence(R) and continually arouse my anger?(S) Look at them putting the branch to their nose! 18 Therefore I will deal with them in anger;(T) I will not look on them with pity(U) or spare them. Although they shout in my ears, I will not listen(V) to them.”

17 Don’t you see what they are doing throughout the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18 No wonder I am so angry! Watch how the children gather wood and the fathers build sacrificial fires. See how the women knead dough and make cakes to offer to the Queen of Heaven. And they pour out liquid offerings to their other idol gods! 19 Am I the one they are hurting?” asks the Lord. “Most of all, they hurt themselves, to their own shame.”

20 So this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “I will pour out my terrible fury on this place. Its people, animals, trees, and crops will be consumed by the unquenchable fire of my anger.”

21 This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: “Take your burnt offerings and your other sacrifices and eat them yourselves! 22 When I led your ancestors out of Egypt, it was not burnt offerings and sacrifices I wanted from them. 23 This is what I told them: ‘Obey me, and I will be your God, and you will be my people. Do everything as I say, and all will be well!’

24 “But my people would not listen to me. They kept doing whatever they wanted, following the stubborn desires of their evil hearts. They went backward instead of forward. 25 From the day your ancestors left Egypt until now, I have continued to send my servants, the prophets—day in and day out. 26 But my people have not listened to me or even tried to hear. They have been stubborn and sinful—even worse than their ancestors.

27 “Tell them all this, but do not expect them to listen. Shout out your warnings, but do not expect them to respond. 28 Say to them, ‘This is the nation whose people will not obey the Lord their God and who refuse to be taught. Truth has vanished from among them; it is no longer heard on their lips.

Are they not rather harming themselves, to their own shame?(E)

20 “‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign(F) Lord says: My anger(G) and my wrath will be poured(H) out on this place—on man and beast, on the trees of the field and on the crops of your land—and it will burn and not be quenched.(I)

21 “‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Go ahead, add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices(J) and eat(K) the meat yourselves! 22 For when I brought your ancestors out of Egypt and spoke to them, I did not just give them commands(L) about burnt offerings and sacrifices,(M) 23 but I gave them this command:(N) Obey(O) me, and I will be your God and you will be my people.(P) Walk in obedience to all(Q) I command you, that it may go well(R) with you. 24 But they did not listen(S) or pay attention;(T) instead, they followed the stubborn inclinations of their evil hearts.(U) They went backward(V) and not forward. 25 From the time your ancestors left Egypt until now, day after day, again and again(W) I sent you my servants(X) the prophets.(Y) 26 But they did not listen to me or pay attention.(Z) They were stiff-necked(AA) and did more evil than their ancestors.’(AB)
