Il profeta come sentinella
33 Mi fu rivolta questa parola del Signore: 2 «Figlio dell'uomo, parla ai figli del tuo popolo e dì loro: Se mando la spada contro un paese e il popolo di quella terra prende un uomo del suo territorio e lo pone quale sentinella, 3 e questa, vedendo sopraggiungere la spada sul paese, suona la tromba e dà l'allarme al popolo: 4 se colui che ben sente il suono della tromba non ci bada e la spada giunge e lo sorprende, egli dovrà a se stesso la propria rovina. 5 Aveva udito il suono della tromba, ma non ci ha badato: sarà responsabile della sua rovina; se ci avesse badato, si sarebbe salvato. 6 Se invece la sentinella vede giunger la spada e non suona la tromba e il popolo non è avvertito e la spada giunge e sorprende qualcuno, questi sarà sorpreso per la sua iniquità: ma della sua morte domanderò conto alla sentinella. 7 O figlio dell'uomo, io ti ho costituito sentinella per gli Israeliti; ascolterai una parola dalla mia bocca e tu li avvertirai da parte mia. 8 Se io dico all'empio: Empio tu morirai, e tu non parli per distoglier l'empio dalla sua condotta, egli, l'empio, morirà per la sua iniquità; ma della sua morte chiederò conto a te.
9 Ma se tu avrai ammonito l'empio della sua condotta perché si converta ed egli non si converte, egli morirà per la sua iniquità. Tu invece sarai salvo.
Conversione e perversione
10 Tu, figlio dell'uomo, annunzia agli Israeliti: Voi dite: I nostri delitti e i nostri peccati sono sopra di noi e in essi noi ci consumiamo! In che modo potremo vivere? 11 Dì loro: Com'è vero ch'io vivo - oracolo del Signore Dio - io non godo della morte dell'empio, ma che l'empio desista dalla sua condotta e viva. Convertitevi dalla vostra condotta perversa! Perché volete perire, o Israeliti?
12 Figlio dell'uomo, dì ancora ai figli del tuo popolo: La giustizia del giusto non lo salva se pecca, e l'empio non cade per la sua iniquità se desiste dall'iniquità, come il giusto non potrà vivere per la sua giustizia se pecca. 13 Se io dico al giusto: Vivrai, ed egli, confidando sulla sua giustizia commette l'iniquità, nessuna delle sue azioni buone sarà più ricordata e morirà nella malvagità che egli ha commesso. 14 Se dico all'empio: Morirai, ed egli desiste dalla sua iniquità e compie ciò che è retto e giusto, 15 rende il pegno, restituisce ciò che ha rubato, osserva le leggi della vita, senza commettere il male, egli vivrà e non morirà; 16 nessuno dei peccati che ha commessi sarà più ricordato: egli ha praticato ciò che è retto e giusto e certamente vivrà.
17 Eppure, i figli del tuo popolo vanno dicendo: Il modo di agire del Signore non è retto. E' invece il loro modo di agire che non è retto! 18 Se il giusto desiste dalla giustizia e fa il male, per questo certo morirà. 19 Se l'empio desiste dall'empietà e compie ciò che è retto e giusto, per questo vivrà. 20 Voi andate dicendo: Non è retto il modo di agire del Signore. Giudicherò ciascuno di voi secondo il suo modo di agire, Israeliti».
La presa della città
21 Il cinque del decimo mese dell'anno decimosecondo della nostra deportazione arrivò da me un fuggiasco da Gerusalemme per dirmi: La città è presa. 22 La sera prima dell'arrivo del fuggiasco, la mano del Signore fu su di me e al mattino, quando il fuggiasco giunse, il Signore mi aprì la bocca. La mia bocca dunque si aprì e io non fui più muto.
La devastazione del paese
23 Mi fu rivolta questa parola del Signore: 24 «Figlio dell'uomo, gli abitanti di quelle rovine, nel paese d'Israele, vanno dicendo: Abramo era uno solo ed ebbe in possesso il paese e noi siamo molti: a noi dunque è stato dato in possesso il paese!
25 Perciò dirai loro: Così dice il Signore Dio: Voi mangiate la carne con il sangue, sollevate gli occhi ai vostri idoli, versate il sangue, e vorreste avere in possesso il paese? 26 Voi vi appoggiate sulle vostre spade, compite cose nefande, ognuno di voi disonora la donna del suo prossimo e vorreste avere in possesso il paese? 27 Annunzierai loro: Dice il Signore Dio: Com'è vero ch'io vivo, quelli che stanno fra le rovine periranno di spada; darò in pasto alle belve quelli che sono per la campagna e quelli che sono nelle fortezze e dentro le caverne moriranno di peste. 28 Ridurrò il paese ad una solitudine e a un deserto e l'orgoglio della sua forza cesserà. I monti d'Israele saranno devastati, non ci passerà più nessuno. 29 Sapranno che io sono il Signore quando farò del loro paese una solitudine e un deserto, a causa di tutti gli abomini che hanno commessi.
Risultati della predicazione
30 Figlio dell'uomo, i figli del tuo popolo parlano di te lungo le mura e sulle porte delle case e si dicono l'un l'altro: Andiamo a sentire qual è la parola che viene dal Signore. 31 In folla vengono da te, si mettono a sedere davanti a te e ascoltano le tue parole, ma poi non le mettono in pratica, perché si compiacciono di parole, mentre il loro cuore va dietro al guadagno. 32 Ecco, tu sei per loro come una canzone d'amore: bella è la voce e piacevole l'accompagnamento musicale. Essi ascoltano le tue parole, ma non le mettono in pratica. 33 Ma quando ciò avverrà ed ecco avviene, sapranno che c'è un profeta in mezzo a loro».

Ezekiel Is Israel's Watchman
33 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 (A)“Son of man, speak to (B)your people and say to them, If (C)I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and make him their (D)watchman, 3 and if he sees the sword coming upon the land and (E)blows the trumpet and warns the people, 4 then if anyone who hears the sound of the trumpet does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, (F)his blood shall be upon his own head. 5 (G)He heard the sound of the trumpet and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But if he had taken warning, he would have saved his life. 6 (H)But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, (I)that person is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman's hand.
7 (J)“So you, (K)son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. (L)Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. 8 (M)If I say to the wicked, O wicked one, you shall surely die, (N)and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, (O)that wicked person shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. 9 (P)But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, (Q)that person shall die in his iniquity, (R)but you will have delivered your soul.
Why Will You Die, Israel?
10 “And you, (S)son of man, say to the house of Israel, Thus have you said: ‘Surely our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and (T)we rot away because of them. (U)How then can we live?’ 11 Say to them, (V)As I live, declares the Lord God, (W)I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; (X)turn back, turn back from your evil ways, (Y)for why will you die, O house of Israel?
12 (Z)“And you, son of man, say to (AA)your people, (AB)The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him when he transgresses, (AC)and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall by it when he turns from his wickedness, (AD)and the righteous shall not be able to live by his righteousness[a] when he sins. 13 Though I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, yet (AE)if he trusts in his righteousness and does injustice, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered, but in his injustice that he has done he shall die. 14 Again, (AF)though I say to the wicked, (AG)‘You shall surely die,’ yet (AH)if he turns from his sin and does what is just and right, 15 if the wicked (AI)restores the pledge, (AJ)gives back what he has taken by robbery, and walks (AK)in the statutes of life, not doing injustice, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 16 (AL)None of the sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him. He has done what is just and right; he shall surely live.
17 “Yet (AM)your people say, (AN)‘The way of the Lord is not just,’ when it is their own way that is not just. 18 (AO)When the righteous turns from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it. 19 And (AP)when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does what is just and right, he shall live by this. 20 Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, (AQ)I will judge each of you according to his ways.”
Jerusalem Struck Down
21 In the (AR)twelfth year (AS)of our exile, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month, (AT)a fugitive from Jerusalem came to me and said, (AU)“The city has been struck down.” 22 (AV)Now (AW)the hand of the Lord had been upon me the evening before the fugitive came; and he had opened my mouth by the time the man came to me in the morning, so my mouth was opened, and I was no longer mute.
23 The word of the Lord came to me: 24 (AX)“Son of man, the inhabitants of these (AY)waste places in the land of Israel keep saying, (AZ)‘Abraham was only one man, yet he got possession of the land; but (BA)we are many; the land is surely given us to possess.’ 25 Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord God: (BB)You eat flesh with the blood and (BC)lift up your eyes to your idols and (BD)shed blood; shall you then possess the land? 26 (BE)You rely on the sword, (BF)you commit abominations, and (BG)each of you defiles his neighbor's wife; shall you then possess the land? 27 Say this to them, Thus says the Lord God: (BH)As I live, surely those who are in (BI)the waste places shall fall by (BJ)the sword, and whoever is in the open field I will give to (BK)the beasts to be devoured, and those who are in (BL)strongholds and in caves shall die by (BM)pestilence. 28 (BN)And I will make the land a desolation and a waste, and (BO)her proud might shall come to an end, and (BP)the mountains of Israel shall be so desolate that none will pass through. 29 (BQ)Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I have made the land a desolation and a waste because of all their abominations that they have committed.
30 “As for you, (BR)son of man, (BS)your people who talk together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses say to one another, each to his brother, ‘Come, and hear what the word is that comes from the Lord.’ 31 (BT)And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear what you say but they will not do it; for (BU)with lustful talk in their mouths they act; their heart is set on their gain. 32 And behold, you are to them like one who sings lustful songs with a beautiful voice and (BV)plays[b] well on an instrument, for (BW)they hear what you say, but they will not do it. 33 (BX)When this comes—and come it will!—(BY)then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”

“Cuando yo permito que haya guerra en algún país, la gente de ese lugar elige a alguien y lo pone como vigilante. 3 Ese vigilante tiene la obligación de tocar la trompeta si ve que el ejército enemigo se acerca. 4-5 Si alguien escucha la trompeta, pero no le hace caso, y los enemigos lo matan, esa persona es culpable de su propia muerte. Si hubiera hecho caso de la advertencia, se habría salvado.
6 ”También puede suceder que el vigilante vea que se acerca el enemigo, y no toque la trompeta. En tal caso, si el enemigo llega y mata a alguien, esa persona morirá por causa de su pecado, pero yo le pediré cuentas de esa muerte al vigilante”.
7-9 »Yo te he elegido como mi vigilante oficial ante los israelitas. Si me oyes sentenciar a muerte a algún malvado, y tú no le adviertes que debe cambiar su mala conducta, ese malvado morirá por causa de su pecado, pero yo te pediré a ti cuentas de su muerte. Por el contrario, si le adviertes que debe cambiar su mala conducta, y no te hace caso, ese malvado morirá por causa de su pecado, pero tú salvarás tu vida.
10 »Los israelitas creen que ya no tienen remedio. Creen que se están pudriendo en vida porque han pecado mucho. Pero tú debes decirles 11 de mi parte que yo no quiero que muera la gente malvada. Lo que quiero es que dejen su mala conducta y vivan. Israelitas, ¡cambien su mala conducta! ¡Dejen de hacer lo malo, y no morirán!
12-19 »Pon atención, Ezequiel. Los israelitas me critican y dicen que soy injusto, pero en realidad los injustos son ellos. Por eso quiero que les aclares esto: Si una persona buena hace lo malo, todo lo bueno que haya hecho no la salvará de morir; pero si una persona malvada deja de hacer lo malo, todo lo malo que haya hecho le será perdonado, y vivirá por hacer lo que es recto y justo. Si roba algo, o recibe algo en prenda, pero lo devuelve, no volveré a acordarme de sus pecados, pues habrá obedecido mis mandamientos, que dan vida.
»Si a una persona buena le prometo que vivirá muchos años, y confiada en eso empieza a pecar, yo no tomaré en cuenta todo lo bueno que haya hecho, sino que morirá por los pecados que haya cometido.
20 »Sin embargo, los israelitas me critican y siguen diciendo que soy injusto. Pero yo voy a juzgar a cada quien de acuerdo con su conducta».
La destrucción de Jerusalén
21 Habían pasado doce años desde que llegamos presos a Babilonia. El día cinco del mes de Tébet[a] me enteré de que Jerusalén había sido destruida. Uno de los que habían logrado escapar con vida me dio la noticia. 22 La noche anterior, Dios me había hecho sentir su poder y me dejó mudo. Pero al día siguiente, cuando llegó el sobreviviente, Dios me permitió volver a hablar 23 y me dijo:
24 «Israel es un país en ruinas. Sin embargo, hay israelitas que se consuelan diciendo: “Si Abraham por sí solo pudo adueñarse de este país, ¡con mayor razón nosotros, que somos muchos, podremos permanecer en él!” 25-26 Por lo tanto, ve y diles de mi parte: “Ustedes hacen cosas repugnantes, comen alimentos prohibidos, adoran a dioses falsos, matan gente, confían en sus armas, y tienen relaciones sexuales con la mujer de su prójimo. ¿Y aún así esperan adueñarse de esta tierra?”
27 »Diles también de mi parte:
“Yo les juro que los israelitas que aún viven en estas ruinas morirán atravesados por la espada. Los animales salvajes se comerán a los que vivan en el campo, y la enfermedad acabará con los que se escondan en cuevas y fortalezas.
28-29 ”Ustedes han cometido pecados que yo no soporto. Pero yo les quitaré su poder y su orgullo. Dejaré este país hecho un desierto. Quedará totalmente abandonado, y nadie pasará por sus montañas. Entonces reconocerán que yo soy el Dios de Israel”.
30 »Ezequiel, los israelitas también hablan de ti. Hasta en las murallas de la ciudad, y en las puertas de sus casas, se les oye decir: “Vengan, vamos a oír el mensaje que Dios nos ha enviado por medio de Ezequiel”. 31-32 Y así lo hacen: llegan, se sientan delante de ti, y te prestan atención. Para ellos, tú eres como un cantante de dulce voz, que sabe tocar bien su instrumento musical, y que le canta al amor. Les gusta mucho cómo hablas, pero les gusta más el dinero. Te oyen, pero no hacen lo que les dices.
33 »Muy pronto se cumplirá todo lo que he dicho. Cuando se cumpla, van a darse cuenta de que hubo entre ellos alguien que les hablaba de mi parte».
