18 Mi fu rivolta questa parola del Signore: 2 «Perché andate ripetendo questo proverbio sul paese d'Israele:
I padri han mangiato l'uva acerba
e i denti dei figli si sono allegati?
3 Com'è vero ch'io vivo, dice il Signore Dio, voi non ripeterete più questo proverbio in Israele. 4 Ecco, tutte le vite sono mie: la vita del padre e quella del figlio è mia; chi pecca morirà.
5 Se uno è giusto e osserva il diritto e la giustizia, 6 se non mangia sulle alture e non alza gli occhi agli idoli della casa d'Israele, se non disonora la moglie del suo prossimo e non si accosta a una donna durante il suo stato di impurità, 7 se non opprime alcuno, restituisce il pegno al debitore, non commette rapina, divide il pane con l'affamato e copre di vesti l'ignudo, 8 se non presta a usura e non esige interesse, desiste dall'iniquità e pronunzia retto giudizio fra un uomo e un altro, 9 se cammina nei miei decreti e osserva le mie leggi agendo con fedeltà, egli è giusto ed egli vivrà, parola del Signore Dio. 10 Ma se uno ha generato un figlio violento e sanguinario che commette qualcuna di tali azioni, 11 mentre egli non le commette, e questo figlio mangia sulle alture, disonora la donna del prossimo, 12 opprime il povero e l'indigente, commette rapine, non restituisce il pegno, volge gli occhi agli idoli, compie azioni abominevoli, 13 presta a usura ed esige gli interessi, egli non vivrà; poiché ha commesso queste azioni abominevoli, costui morirà e dovrà a se stesso la propria morte. 14 Ma, se uno ha generato un figlio che vedendo tutti i peccati commessi dal padre, sebbene li veda, non li commette, 15 non mangia sulle alture, non volge gli occhi agli idoli di Israele, non disonora la donna del prossimo, 16 non opprime alcuno, non trattiene il pegno, non commette rapina, dà il pane all'affamato e copre di vesti l'ignudo, 17 desiste dall'iniquità, non presta a usura né a interesse, osserva i miei decreti, cammina secondo le mie leggi, costui non morirà per l'iniquità di suo padre, ma certo vivrà. 18 Suo padre invece, che ha oppresso e derubato il suo prossimo, che non ha agito bene in mezzo al popolo, morirà per la sua iniquità.
19 Voi dite: Perché il figlio non sconta l'iniquità del padre? Perché il figlio ha agito secondo giustizia e rettitudine, ha osservato tutti i miei comandamenti e li ha messi in pratica, perciò egli vivrà.
20 Colui che ha peccato e non altri deve morire; il figlio non sconta l'iniquità del padre, né il padre l'iniquità del figlio. Al giusto sarà accreditata la sua giustizia e al malvagio la sua malvagità.
21 Ma se il malvagio si ritrae da tutti i peccati che ha commessi e osserva tutti i miei decreti e agisce con giustizia e rettitudine, egli vivrà, non morirà. 22 Nessuna delle colpe commesse sarà ricordata, ma vivrà per la giustizia che ha praticata.
23 Forse che io ho piacere della morte del malvagio - dice il Signore Dio - o non piuttosto che desista dalla sua condotta e viva?
24 Ma se il giusto si allontana dalla giustizia e commette l'iniquità e agisce secondo tutti gli abomini che l'empio commette, potrà egli vivere? Tutte le opere giuste da lui fatte saranno dimenticate; a causa della prevaricazione in cui è caduto e del peccato che ha commesso, egli morirà.
25 Voi dite: Non è retto il modo di agire del Signore.
Ascolta dunque, popolo d'Israele: Non è retta la mia condotta o piuttosto non è retta la vostra? 26 Se il giusto si allontana dalla giustizia per commettere l'iniquità e a causa di questa muore, egli muore appunto per l'iniquità che ha commessa. 27 E se l'ingiusto desiste dall'ingiustizia che ha commessa e agisce con giustizia e rettitudine, egli fa vivere se stesso. 28 Ha riflettuto, si è allontanato da tutte le colpe commesse: egli certo vivrà e non morirà. 29 Eppure gli Israeliti van dicendo: Non è retta la via del Signore. O popolo d'Israele, non sono rette le mie vie o piuttosto non sono rette le vostre?
30 Perciò, o Israeliti, io giudicherò ognuno di voi secondo la sua condotta. Oracolo del Signore Dio. Convertitevi e desistete da tutte le vostre iniquità, e l'iniquità non sarà più causa della vostra rovina. 31 Liberatevi da tutte le iniquità commesse e formatevi un cuore nuovo e uno spirito nuovo. Perché volete morire, o Israeliti? 32 Io non godo della morte di chi muore. Parola del Signore Dio. Convertitevi e vivrete».

18 耶和華對我說： 2 「你們以色列人為什麼說『父親吃了酸葡萄，兒子的牙酸倒了』這句俗語呢？ 3 主耶和華說，我憑我的永恆起誓，你們在以色列必不再用這句話。 4 因為所有的生命都屬於我，父和子都屬於我。誰犯罪，誰死亡。
5 「倘若有義人秉公行義， 6 不在山上的廟宇裡吃祭物，不拜以色列的偶像，不玷污別人的妻子，不親近經期中的婦女； 7 不欺壓人，反而退還債戶的抵押品；不搶奪財物，反而給饑餓的人食物吃，給赤身露體的人衣服穿； 8 不放債取利，不犯罪作惡，反而公平待人， 9 遵守我的律例，順從我的典章——這樣的義人必能活著。這是主耶和華說的。
10 「倘若這人生了一個不肖子，兇殘暴戾，殺人搶劫，無惡不作， 11 常在廟宇吃祭偶像之物，玷污別人的妻子， 12 欺壓貧窮困苦的人，搶奪財物，扣留債戶的抵押品，祭拜偶像，犯罪作惡， 13 放債取利，這樣的人還能活著嗎？他必不能活。他作惡多端，必自取滅亡，抵償自己的血債。
14 「倘若這不肖子有一個好兒子，他看見父親的所作所為，不願步父親的後塵。 15 他不肯在山上吃祭偶像之物，不拜以色列人的偶像，不玷污別人的妻子， 16 不欺壓他人，不扣留抵押品，不搶奪財物，反而給饑餓的人食物吃，給赤身露體的人衣服穿， 17 不壓榨貧窮的人，不放債取利，反而遵守我的典章，順從我的律例，這人必不因父親的罪惡而死亡，他必活著。 18 他父親因肆意欺詐，掠奪同胞，多行不義，必自招滅亡。
19 「你們會問，『兒子為什麼不用承擔父親的罪惡呢？』這是因為兒子秉公行義，謹遵我的律例，所以他必活著。 20 誰犯罪，誰死亡，兒子不用承擔父親的罪惡，父親也不用承擔兒子的罪惡。義人必有善報，惡人必有惡報。
21 「惡人若肯痛改前非，遵守我的律例，秉公行義，就必活著，不致死亡。 22 我必不追究他以前所犯的一切罪行，他必因行事正直而活著。 23 主耶和華說，我難道喜歡惡人死亡嗎？我豈不是更願他們痛改前非並活著嗎？ 24 義人若棄善行惡，與惡人同流合污，這人豈能活著？他從前的義行不會被記念，他必因自己的背信和罪惡而滅亡。
25 「你們說，主這樣做不公平。以色列人啊，你們聽著，是我的做法不公平呢？還是你們的做法不公平呢？ 26 倘若義人離義行惡，他必因犯罪而死。 27 倘若惡人離惡行義，他必救回自己的性命。 28 因為他醒悟過來，痛改前非，必能活著，不致死亡。 29 以色列人卻說，『主這樣做不公平！』以色列人啊，是我的做法不公平呢？還是你們的做法不公平呢？
30 「所以主耶和華說，『以色列人啊，我必按你們各人的行為審判你們。你們要悔改，痛改前非，使你們不致死在罪惡中。 31 你們要離棄從前所有的罪惡，洗心革面。以色列人啊！你們何必走向滅亡呢？』 32 主耶和華說，『我斷不喜歡任何人死亡，你們要悔改，以便存活。』」

Everyone Will Suffer for His Own Sins
18 The Lord spoke his word to me. He said, 2 “What do you mean when you use this proverb about the land of Israel: ‘Fathers have eaten sour grapes, and their children’s teeth are set on edge’? 3 As I live, declares the Almighty Lord, you will no longer use this proverb in Israel. 4 The life of every person belongs to me. Fathers and their children belong to me. The person who sins will die.
5 “Suppose a righteous person does what is fair and right. 6 He doesn’t eat at the illegal mountain worship sites or look for help from the idols of the nation of Israel. He doesn’t dishonor his neighbor’s wife or have sexual intercourse with a woman while she is having her period. 7 He doesn’t oppress anyone. He returns what a borrower gives him as security for a loan. He doesn’t rob anyone. He gives food to people who are hungry, and he gives clothes to those who are naked. 8 He doesn’t lend money for interest or make an excessive profit. He refuses to do evil things, and he judges everyone fairly. 9 He lives by my rules and obeys my laws faithfully. This person is righteous. He will certainly live,” declares the Almighty Lord.
10 “But suppose this person has a son who robs and murders. The son does all the things 11 that his father never did. He eats at the illegal mountain worship sites. He dishonors his neighbor’s wife. 12 He oppresses the poor and needy. He robs. He doesn’t return the security for a loan. He looks to idols for help. He does disgusting things. 13 He lends money for interest and makes excessive profits. Will this person live? He will not live. He has done all these disgusting things. So he must die, and he will be responsible for his own death.
14 “But suppose this person has a son. The son sees all the sins that his father does. He is afraid, so he doesn’t do such things.[a] 15 He doesn’t eat at the illegal mountain worship sites or look for help from the idols of the nation of Israel. He doesn’t dishonor his neighbor’s wife. 16 He doesn’t oppress anyone. He doesn’t keep the security for a loan. He doesn’t rob anyone. He gives food to people who are hungry, and he gives clothes to those who are naked. 17 He refuses to hurt the poor. He doesn’t charge interest or make excessive profits. He obeys my rules and lives by my laws. He won’t die for his father’s sins. He will certainly live. 18 But his father has oppressed others, robbed his relative, and done what is wrong among his people. So the father will die because of his sin.
19 “But you ask, ‘Why isn’t the son punished for his father’s sin?’ It is because the son has done what is fair and right. He obeyed my rules and followed them. He will certainly live. 20 The person who sins will die. A son will not be punished for his father’s sins, and a father will not be punished for his son’s sins. The righteousness of the righteous person will be his own, and the wickedness of the wicked person will be his own.
21 “But suppose a wicked person turns away from all the sins that he has done. He obeys all my laws and does what is fair and right. He will certainly live. He will not die. 22 All the rebellious things that he did will not be remembered. He will live because of the right things that he did. 23 I don’t want wicked people to die.” declares the Almighty Lord. “I want them to turn from their evil ways and live.
24 “But suppose a righteous person turns away from doing right and he does evil things. He does all the disgusting things that the wicked person did. Will he live? All the right things that he has done will not be remembered because of his unfaithfulness and because of his sin. He will die because of them.
25 “But you say, ‘The Lord’s way is unfair.’ Listen, nation of Israel, isn’t my way fair? Isn’t it your ways that are unfair? 26 When a righteous person turns away from doing right and does evil things, he will die. He will die because of the evil things he has done. 27 When a wicked person turns away from the wicked things that he has done and does what is fair and right, he will live. 28 He realized what he was doing and turned away from all the rebellious things that he had done. He will certainly live. He will not die.
29 “But the nation of Israel says, ‘The Lord’s way is unfair.’ Isn’t my way fair, nation of Israel? Isn’t it your ways that are unfair?
30 “That is why I will judge each of you by what you have done, people of Israel,” declares the Almighty Lord. “Change the way you think and act. Turn away from all the rebellious things that you have done so that you will not fall into sin. 31 Stop all the rebellious things that you are doing. Get yourselves new hearts and new spirits. Why do you want to die, nation of Israel? 32 I don’t want anyone to die,” declares the Almighty Lord. “Change the way you think and act!”
