Ezechiël 5

Ezechiël moet zich kaalscheren

5 De Heer zei tegen mij: "Mensenzoon, neem een zwaard dat zo scherp geslepen is als een scheermes. Scheer daarmee je haar en je baard af.[a] Leg het haar daarna op een weegschaal en verdeel het in drie delen. 2 Eén derde deel van het haar moet je midden in de stad die je op de kleitegel getekend hebt verbranden. Doe dat wanneer de 390 dagen van de omsingeling van Jeruzalem voorbij zijn. Eén derde deel moet je met een mes rond de stad stukhakken. En één derde deel moet je laten wegwaaien in de wind. Dat betekent dat zij die vluchten altijd opgejaagd en in gevaar zullen zijn.[b] 3 Maar houd een paar haren apart. Een paar daarvan moet je vastmaken in de plooien van je mantel. 4 De andere gooi je in het vuur, zodat ze verbranden. Dat betekent dat Ik het vuur van mijn woede over het volk Israël uitstort.

5 Dit zegt de Heer: Zo zal het gaan met Jeruzalem. Ik had van Jeruzalem het middelpunt van vele volken en landen gemaakt. 6 Maar de bewoners wilden mijn wetten niet gehoorzamen. Ze waren zelfs slechter dan de andere volken, en ongehoorzamer dan de landen om hen heen. Ze hebben zich niets aangetrokken van mijn wetten en leefregels. Ze hebben zich er niet aan gehouden. 7 De Heer zegt: jullie zijn koppiger en eigenwijzer dan de volken om jullie heen. Jullie hebben je niet gehouden aan mijn wetten en leefregels. Jullie hebben je zelfs niets aangetrokken van de wetten en leefregels van de volken om jullie heen. 8 Daarom zal Ik jullie straffen! Alle volken zullen het zien. 9 Ik zal jullie zwaarder straffen dan Ik ooit heb gedaan of ooit nog zal doen. Want jullie hebben vreselijke dingen gedaan. 10 Er zal zó'n zware hongersnood komen, dat vaders hun kinderen opeten en kinderen hun vaders opeten. Ik zal jullie op allerlei manieren straffen. En wie er dan nog van jullie zijn overgebleven, zal Ik naar alle windrichtingen wegjagen.

11 Ik zweer bij Mijzelf, zegt de Heer: omdat jullie mijn heiligdom hebben bedorven met jullie walgelijke godenbeelden, zal Ik Mij terugtrekken. Ik zal jullie vernietigen en geen genade met jullie hebben. 12 Eén derde deel van jullie zal door de pest en de honger sterven. Eén derde deel zal door het zwaard worden gedood. En één derde deel zal Ik naar alle windrichtingen wegjagen. Zij zullen altijd opgejaagd en in gevaar zijn.[c] 13 Zo zal Ik jullie straffen. Ik zal mijn woede op jullie koelen. En jullie zullen beseffen dat Ik een jaloers God ben die niet wil dat jullie andere goden hebben. 14 Ik zal jullie land en stad verwoesten. Er zullen alleen puinhopen van overblijven. Jullie zullen je vreselijk schamen dat dat gebeurt. Iedereen die voorbij gaat, zal het zien. 15 Jullie zullen voor schut staan en uitgelachen worden. De volken om jullie heen zullen geschokt zijn als ze zien hoe zwaar Ik jullie straf. Ik, de Heer, heb het gezegd. 16 Ik zal de dodelijke pijlen van hongersnood op jullie afschieten. De honger zal steeds groter worden, tot er helemaal geen eten meer is. Zo zal Ik jullie doden. 17 Ik zal honger en wilde dieren op jullie afsturen. Daardoor zullen jullie kinderen sterven. Jullie zullen sterven door de pest, de honger en het zwaard. Ik, de Heer, zal doen wat Ik heb gezegd."

  1. Ezechiël 5:1 Afgeschoren haar was een teken van verdriet. En als iemands baard was afgeschoren, was dat een schande voor hem. Deze twee dingen stonden samen symbool voor het verdriet en de schande van de Israëlieten wanneer ze gevangen meegenomen zouden worden naar een ander land.

God’s Razor of Judgment

5 “Now, son of man, take a sharp sword and use it as a barber’s razor(A) to shave(B) your head and your beard.(C) Then take a set of scales and divide up the hair. 2 When the days of your siege come to an end, burn(D) a third(E) of the hair inside the city. Take a third and strike it with the sword all around the city. And scatter a third to the wind.(F) For I will pursue them with drawn sword.(G) 3 But take a few hairs and tuck them away in the folds of your garment.(H) 4 Again, take a few of these and throw them into the fire(I) and burn them up. A fire will spread from there to all Israel.

5 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: This is Jerusalem, which I have set in the center of the nations, with countries all around her.(J) 6 Yet in her wickedness she has rebelled against my laws and decrees more than the nations and countries around her. She has rejected my laws and has not followed my decrees.(K)

7 “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: You have been more unruly than the nations around you and have not followed my decrees or kept my laws. You have not even[a] conformed to the standards of the nations around you.(L)

8 “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself am against you, Jerusalem, and I will inflict punishment on you in the sight of the nations.(M) 9 Because of all your detestable idols, I will do to you what I have never done before and will never do again.(N) 10 Therefore in your midst parents will eat their children, and children will eat their parents.(O) I will inflict punishment on you and will scatter all your survivors to the winds.(P) 11 Therefore as surely as I live,(Q) declares the Sovereign(R) Lord, because you have defiled my sanctuary(S) with all your vile images(T) and detestable practices,(U) I myself will shave you; I will not look on you with pity or spare you.(V) 12 A third of your people will die of the plague or perish by famine inside you; a third will fall by the sword outside your walls; and a third I will scatter to the winds(W) and pursue with drawn sword.(X)

13 “Then my anger will cease and my wrath(Y) against them will subside, and I will be avenged.(Z) And when I have spent my wrath on them, they will know that I the Lord have spoken in my zeal.(AA)

14 “I will make you a ruin and a reproach among the nations around you, in the sight of all who pass by.(AB) 15 You will be a reproach(AC) and a taunt, a warning(AD) and an object of horror to the nations around you when I inflict punishment on you in anger and in wrath and with stinging rebuke.(AE) I the Lord have spoken.(AF) 16 When I shoot at you with my deadly and destructive arrows of famine, I will shoot to destroy you. I will bring more and more famine upon you and cut off your supply of food.(AG) 17 I will send famine and wild beasts(AH) against you, and they will leave you childless. Plague and bloodshed(AI) will sweep through you, and I will bring the sword against you. I the Lord have spoken.(AJ)”

Jerusalem Will Be Destroyed

5 “And you, (A)O son of man, take a (B)sharp sword. Use it as (C)a barber's razor and (D)pass it over your head and your beard. Then take balances for weighing and divide the hair. 2 (E)A third part you shall burn in the fire (F)in the midst of the city, (G)when the days of the siege are completed. And a third part you shall take and strike with the sword all around the city. (H)And a third part you shall scatter to the wind, and (I)I will unsheathe the sword after them. 3 (J)And you shall take from these a small number and bind them in the skirts of your robe. 4 (K)And of these again you shall take some and cast them into the midst of the fire and burn them in the fire. From there a fire will come out into all the house of Israel.

5 “Thus says the Lord God: (L)This is Jerusalem. I have set her (M)in the center of the nations, with countries all around her. 6 And she has rebelled against my rules by doing wickedness (N)more than the nations, and against my statutes more than (O)the countries all around her; for they have rejected my rules and have not walked in my statutes. 7 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you are (P)more turbulent than the nations that are all around you, (Q)and have not walked in my statutes or obeyed my rules, (R)and have not[a] even acted according to the rules of the nations that are all around you, 8 therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, I, even I, (S)am against you. (T)And I will execute judgments[b] in your midst (U)in the sight of the nations. 9 And because of all your abominations I will do with you (V)what I have never yet done, and the like of which I will never do again. 10 Therefore (W)fathers shall eat their sons in your midst, and sons shall eat their fathers. (X)And I will execute judgments on you, (Y)and any of you who survive I will scatter to all the winds. 11 Therefore, (Z)as I live, declares the Lord God, surely, (AA)because you have defiled my sanctuary (AB)with all your detestable things and with all your (AC)abominations, (AD)therefore I will withdraw.[c] (AE)My eye will not spare, and I will have no pity. 12 (AF)A third part of you shall die of pestilence and be consumed with famine in your midst; (AG)a third part shall fall by the sword all around you; (AH)and a third part I will scatter to all the winds and will unsheathe the sword after them.

13 (AI)“Thus shall my anger spend itself, and I will vent my fury upon them and satisfy myself. And they shall know that (AJ)I am the Lord—that I have spoken in my jealousy—(AK)when I spend my fury upon them. 14 Moreover, I will make you (AL)a desolation and (AM)an object of reproach among (AN)the nations all around you and in the sight of all who pass by. 15 You shall be[d] a reproach and a taunt, a warning (AO)and a horror, to (AP)the nations all around you, (AQ)when I execute judgments on you in anger and fury, and (AR)with furious rebukes—I am the Lord; I have spoken— 16 when I send against you[e] (AS)the deadly arrows of famine, arrows for destruction, which I will send to destroy you, and when I bring more and more famine upon (AT)you and break your supply[f] of bread. 17 I will send famine and (AU)wild beasts against you, (AV)and they will rob you of your children. Pestilence and (AW)blood shall pass through you, and I will bring the sword upon you. I am the Lord; I have spoken.”
