Division of the Land

13 Thus says the Lord God: “This is the boundary[a] by which (A)you shall divide the land for inheritance among the twelve tribes of Israel. (B)Joseph shall have two portions. 14 And you shall divide equally what (C)I swore (D)to give to your fathers. (E)This land shall fall to you as your inheritance.

15 “This shall be the boundary of the land: On the north side, from (F)the Great Sea (G)by way of Hethlon to Lebo-hamath, and on to (H)Zedad,[b] 16 (I)Berothah, Sibraim (which lies on the border between (J)Damascus and (K)Hamath), as far as Hazer-hatticon, which is on the border of Hauran. 17 So the boundary shall run from the sea to (L)Hazar-enan, which is on the northern border of Damascus, with the border of Hamath to the north.[c] This shall be the north side.[d]

18 “On the east side, the boundary shall run between Hauran and Damascus; along the Jordan between (M)Gilead and the land of Israel; to (N)the eastern sea and as far as Tamar.[e] This shall be the east side.

19 “On the south side, it shall run from (O)Tamar as far as (P)the waters of Meribah-kadesh, from there along (Q)the Brook of Egypt[f] to (R)the Great Sea. This shall be the south side.

20 “On the west side, the Great Sea shall be the boundary to a point (S)opposite Lebo-hamath. This shall be the west side.

21 (T)“So you shall divide this land among you according to the tribes of Israel. 22 (U)You shall allot it as an inheritance for yourselves and (V)for the sojourners who reside among you and have had children among you. (W)They shall be to you as native-born children of Israel. With you they shall be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel. 23 In whatever tribe the sojourner resides, there you shall assign him his inheritance, declares the Lord God.

48 “These are the names of the tribes: Beginning at the northern extreme, beside (X)the way of Hethlon (Y)to Lebo-hamath, as far as (Z)Hazar-enan (which is on the northern border of (AA)Damascus over against Hamath), and extending[g] from the east side to the west,[h] (AB)Dan, one portion. Adjoining the territory of Dan, from the east side to the west, (AC)Asher, one portion. Adjoining the territory of Asher, from the east side to the west, (AD)Naphtali, one portion. Adjoining the territory of Naphtali, from the east side to the west, Manasseh, one portion. Adjoining the territory of Manasseh, from the east side to the west, Ephraim, one portion. Adjoining the territory of Ephraim, from the east side to the west, Reuben, one portion. Adjoining the territory of Reuben, from the east side to the west, Judah, one portion.

“Adjoining the territory of Judah, from the east side to the west, shall be (AE)the portion which you shall set apart, 25,000 cubits[i] in breadth, and in length equal to one of the tribal portions, from the east side to the west, with (AF)the sanctuary in the midst of it. The portion that you shall set apart for the Lord shall be 25,000 cubits in length, and 20,000[j] in breadth. 10 (AG)These shall be the allotments of the holy portion: the priests shall have an allotment measuring 25,000 cubits on the northern side, 10,000 cubits in breadth on the western side, 10,000 in breadth on the eastern side, and 25,000 in length on the southern side, with the sanctuary of the Lord in the midst of it. 11 This shall be for (AH)the consecrated priests, (AI)the sons of Zadok, who kept my charge, who did not go astray when the people of Israel went astray, (AJ)as the Levites did. 12 And it shall belong to them as a special portion from the holy portion of the land, a most holy place, adjoining the territory of the Levites. 13 (AK)And alongside the territory of the priests, the Levites shall have an allotment 25,000 cubits in length and 10,000 in breadth. The whole length shall be 25,000 cubits and the breadth 20,000.[k] 14 They (AL)shall not sell or exchange any of it. They shall not alienate (AM)this choice portion of the land, for it is holy to the Lord.

15 (AN)“The remainder, 5,000 cubits in breadth and 25,000 in length, shall be (AO)for common use for the city, for dwellings and for (AP)open country. In the midst of it shall be the city, 16 and these shall be its measurements: (AQ)the north side 4,500 cubits, the south side 4,500, the east side 4,500, and the west side 4,500. 17 And the city shall have open land: on the north 250 cubits, on the south 250, on the east 250, and on the west 250. 18 The remainder of the length alongside the holy portion shall be 10,000 cubits to the east, and 10,000 to the west, and it shall be alongside the holy portion. (AR)Its produce shall be food for the workers of the city. 19 And the workers of the city, from all the tribes of Israel, shall till it. 20 The whole portion that (AS)you shall set apart shall be 25,000 cubits square, that is, the holy portion together with the property of the city.

21 (AT)“What remains on both sides of the holy portion and of the property of the city shall belong to the prince. Extending from the 25,000 cubits of the holy portion to the east border, and westward from the 25,000 cubits to the west border, parallel to the tribal portions, it shall belong to the prince. (AU)The holy portion with the sanctuary of the temple shall be in its midst. 22 It shall be separate from the property of the Levites and the property of the city, which are in the midst of that which belongs to the prince. The portion of the prince shall lie between the territory of Judah and the territory of Benjamin.

23 “As for the rest of the tribes: from the east side to the west, Benjamin, one portion. 24 Adjoining the territory of Benjamin, from the east side to the west, Simeon, one portion. 25 Adjoining the territory of Simeon, from the east side to the west, Issachar, one portion. 26 Adjoining the territory of Issachar, from the east side to the west, Zebulun, one portion. 27 Adjoining the territory of Zebulun, from the east side to the west, Gad, one portion. 28 And adjoining the territory of Gad to the south, the boundary shall run (AV)from Tamar to the waters of (AW)Meribah-kadesh, from there along the Brook of Egypt[l] to (AX)the Great Sea.[m] 29 This is the land that (AY)you shall allot as an inheritance among the tribes of Israel, and these are their portions, declares the Lord God.

The Gates of the City

30 “These shall be (AZ)the exits of the city: On the north side, which is to be (BA)4,500 cubits by measure, 31 (BB)three gates, the gate of (BC)Reuben, the gate of (BD)Judah, and the gate of (BE)Levi, the gates of the city being named after the tribes of Israel. 32 On the east side, which is to be 4,500 cubits, three gates, the gate of Joseph, the gate of Benjamin, and the gate of Dan. 33 On the south side, which is to be 4,500 cubits by measure, three gates, the gate of Simeon, the gate of Issachar, and the gate of Zebulun. 34 On the west side, which is to be 4,500 cubits, three gates,[n] the gate of Gad, the gate of Asher, and the gate of Naphtali. 35 The circumference of the city shall be 18,000 cubits. And (BF)the name of the city from that time on shall be, (BG)The Lord Is There.”

Daniel Taken to Babylon

In the third year of (BH)the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of (BI)the vessels of the house of God. And he brought them to (BJ)the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, (BK)and placed the vessels in the treasury of his god. Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, (BL)his chief eunuch, to bring some of the people of Israel, both of the royal family[o] and of (BM)the nobility, youths without (BN)blemish, of good appearance and (BO)skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding learning, and competent to stand in the king's palace, and to (BP)teach them the literature and language of the (BQ)Chaldeans. The king assigned them a daily portion of (BR)the food that the king ate, and of (BS)the wine that he drank. They were to be educated for (BT)three years, and at the end of that time they were to (BU)stand before the king. Among these were (BV)Daniel, (BW)Hananiah, (BX)Mishael, and (BY)Azariah of the tribe of Judah. And (BZ)the chief of the eunuchs (CA)gave them names: (CB)Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego.

Daniel's Faithfulness

But Daniel (CC)resolved that he would not (CD)defile himself with (CE)the king's food, or with (CF)the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to (CG)defile himself. (CH)And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs, 10 and the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who assigned your food and your drink; for why should he see that you were in worse condition than the youths who are of your own age? So you would endanger my head with the king.” 11 Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had assigned over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 12 “Test your servants for (CI)ten days; let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat (CJ)the king's food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see.” 14 So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days. 15 At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate (CK)the king's food. 16 (CL)So the steward took away their food and the wine they were to drink, and gave them (CM)vegetables.

17 As for these four youths, (CN)God gave them learning and (CO)skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had (CP)understanding in all visions and dreams. 18 At the end of (CQ)the time, when the king had commanded that they should be brought in, the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. 19 And the king spoke with them, and among all of them none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Therefore (CR)they stood before the king. 20 And in every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all (CS)the magicians and (CT)enchanters that were in all his kingdom. 21 And Daniel (CU)was there until the first year of (CV)King Cyrus.

The Boundaries of the Land

13 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “These are the boundaries(A) of the land that you will divide among the twelve tribes of Israel as their inheritance, with two portions for Joseph.(B) 14 You are to divide it equally among them. Because I swore with uplifted hand to give it to your ancestors, this land will become your inheritance.(C)

15 “This is to be the boundary of the land:(D)

“On the north side it will run from the Mediterranean Sea(E) by the Hethlon road(F) past Lebo Hamath to Zedad, 16 Berothah[a](G) and Sibraim (which lies on the border between Damascus and Hamath),(H) as far as Hazer Hattikon, which is on the border of Hauran. 17 The boundary will extend from the sea to Hazar Enan,[b] along the northern border of Damascus, with the border of Hamath to the north. This will be the northern boundary.(I)

18 “On the east side the boundary will run between Hauran and Damascus, along the Jordan between Gilead and the land of Israel, to the Dead Sea and as far as Tamar.[c] This will be the eastern boundary.(J)

19 “On the south side it will run from Tamar as far as the waters of Meribah Kadesh,(K) then along the Wadi of Egypt(L) to the Mediterranean Sea.(M) This will be the southern boundary.

20 “On the west side, the Mediterranean Sea will be the boundary to a point opposite Lebo Hamath.(N) This will be the western boundary.(O)

21 “You are to distribute this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel. 22 You are to allot it as an inheritance(P) for yourselves and for the foreigners(Q) residing among you and who have children. You are to consider them as native-born Israelites; along with you they are to be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.(R) 23 In whatever tribe a foreigner resides, there you are to give them their inheritance,” declares the Sovereign Lord.(S)

The Division of the Land

48 “These are the tribes, listed by name: At the northern frontier, Dan(T) will have one portion; it will follow the Hethlon road(U) to Lebo Hamath;(V) Hazar Enan and the northern border of Damascus next to Hamath will be part of its border from the east side to the west side.

“Asher(W) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Dan from east to west.

“Naphtali(X) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Asher from east to west.

“Manasseh(Y) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Naphtali from east to west.

“Ephraim(Z) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Manasseh(AA) from east to west.(AB)

“Reuben(AC) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Ephraim from east to west.

“Judah(AD) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Reuben from east to west.

“Bordering the territory of Judah from east to west will be the portion you are to present as a special gift. It will be 25,000 cubits[d] wide, and its length from east to west will equal one of the tribal portions; the sanctuary will be in the center of it.(AE)

“The special portion you are to offer to the Lord will be 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits[e] wide.(AF) 10 This will be the sacred portion for the priests. It will be 25,000 cubits long on the north side, 10,000 cubits wide on the west side, 10,000 cubits wide on the east side and 25,000 cubits long on the south side. In the center of it will be the sanctuary of the Lord.(AG) 11 This will be for the consecrated priests, the Zadokites,(AH) who were faithful in serving me(AI) and did not go astray as the Levites did when the Israelites went astray.(AJ) 12 It will be a special gift to them from the sacred portion of the land, a most holy portion, bordering the territory of the Levites.

13 “Alongside the territory of the priests, the Levites will have an allotment 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide. Its total length will be 25,000 cubits and its width 10,000 cubits.(AK) 14 They must not sell or exchange any of it. This is the best of the land and must not pass into other hands, because it is holy to the Lord.(AL)

15 “The remaining area, 5,000 cubits[f] wide and 25,000 cubits long, will be for the common use of the city, for houses and for pastureland. The city will be in the center of it 16 and will have these measurements: the north side 4,500 cubits,[g] the south side 4,500 cubits, the east side 4,500 cubits, and the west side 4,500 cubits.(AM) 17 The pastureland for the city will be 250 cubits[h] on the north, 250 cubits on the south, 250 cubits on the east, and 250 cubits on the west. 18 What remains of the area, bordering on the sacred portion and running the length of it, will be 10,000 cubits on the east side and 10,000 cubits on the west side. Its produce will supply food for the workers of the city.(AN) 19 The workers from the city who farm it will come from all the tribes of Israel. 20 The entire portion will be a square, 25,000 cubits on each side. As a special gift you will set aside the sacred portion, along with the property of the city.

21 “What remains on both sides of the area formed by the sacred portion and the property of the city will belong to the prince. It will extend eastward from the 25,000 cubits of the sacred portion to the eastern border, and westward from the 25,000 cubits to the western border. Both these areas running the length of the tribal portions will belong to the prince, and the sacred portion with the temple sanctuary will be in the center of them.(AO) 22 So the property of the Levites and the property of the city will lie in the center of the area that belongs to the prince. The area belonging to the prince will lie between the border of Judah and the border of Benjamin.

23 “As for the rest of the tribes: Benjamin(AP) will have one portion; it will extend from the east side to the west side.

29 “This is the land you are to allot as an inheritance to the tribes of Israel, and these will be their portions,” declares the Sovereign Lord.(AW)

The Gates of the New City

30 “These will be the exits of the city: Beginning on the north side, which is 4,500 cubits long, 31 the gates of the city will be named after the tribes of Israel. The three gates on the north side will be the gate of Reuben, the gate of Judah and the gate of Levi.

32 “On the east side, which is 4,500 cubits long, will be three gates: the gate of Joseph, the gate of Benjamin and the gate of Dan.

33 “On the south side, which measures 4,500 cubits, will be three gates: the gate of Simeon, the gate of Issachar and the gate of Zebulun.

Daniel’s Training in Babylon

In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim(AZ) king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar(BA) king of Babylon(BB) came to Jerusalem and besieged it.(BC) And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried(BD) off to the temple of his god in Babylonia[j] and put in the treasure house of his god.(BE)

Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring into the king’s service some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility(BF) young men without any physical defect, handsome,(BG) showing aptitude for every kind of learning,(BH) well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language(BI) and literature of the Babylonians.[k] The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine(BJ) from the king’s table.(BK) They were to be trained for three years,(BL) and after that they were to enter the king’s service.(BM)

Among those who were chosen were some from Judah: Daniel,(BN) Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.(BO) The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar;(BP) to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.(BQ)

But Daniel resolved not to defile(BR) himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. Now God had caused the official to show favor(BS) and compassion(BT) to Daniel, 10 but the official told Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your[l] food and drink.(BU) Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.”

11 Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, 12 “Please test(BV) your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.”(BW) 14 So he agreed to this and tested(BX) them for ten days.

15 At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food.(BY) 16 So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.(BZ)

17 To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding(CA) of all kinds of literature and learning.(CB) And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.(CC)

18 At the end of the time(CD) set by the king to bring them into his service, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar. 19 The king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king’s service.(CE) 20 In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians(CF) and enchanters in his whole kingdom.(CG)

21 And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.(CH)
