8 Yahweh spoke to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh, and tell him, ‘This is what Yahweh says, “Let my people go, that they may serve me. 2 If you refuse to let them go, behold, I will plague all your borders with frogs. 3 The river will swarm with frogs, which will go up and come into your house, and into your bedroom, and on your bed, and into the house of your servants, and on your people, and into your ovens, and into your kneading troughs. 4 The frogs shall come up both on you, and on your people, and on all your servants.”’” 5 Yahweh said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your rod over the rivers, over the streams, and over the pools, and cause frogs to come up on the land of Egypt.’” 6 Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt; and the frogs came up, and covered the land of Egypt. 7 The magicians did the same thing with their enchantments, and brought up frogs on the land of Egypt.
8 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, “Entreat Yahweh, that he take away the frogs from me and from my people; and I will let the people go, that they may sacrifice to Yahweh.”
9 Moses said to Pharaoh, “I give you the honor of setting the time that I should pray for you, and for your servants, and for your people, that the frogs be destroyed from you and your houses, and remain in the river only.”
10 Pharaoh said, “Tomorrow.”
Moses said, “Let it be according to your word, that you may know that there is no one like Yahweh our God. 11 The frogs shall depart from you, and from your houses, and from your servants, and from your people. They shall remain in the river only.”
12 Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, and Moses cried to Yahweh concerning the frogs which he had brought on Pharaoh. 13 Yahweh did according to the word of Moses, and the frogs died out of the houses, out of the courts, and out of the fields. 14 They gathered them together in heaps, and the land stank. 15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was a respite, he hardened his heart, and didn’t listen to them, as Yahweh had spoken.
16 Yahweh said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your rod, and strike the dust of the earth, that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt.’” 17 They did so; and Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod, and struck the dust of the earth, and there were lice on man, and on animal; all the dust of the earth became lice throughout all the land of Egypt. 18 The magicians tried with their enchantments to produce lice, but they couldn’t. There were lice on man, and on animal. 19 Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is God’s finger;” but Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he didn’t listen to them, as Yahweh had spoken.
20 Yahweh said to Moses, “Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh; behold, he comes out to the water; and tell him, ‘This is what Yahweh says, “Let my people go, that they may serve me. 21 Else, if you will not let my people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies on you, and on your servants, and on your people, and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground they are on. 22 I will set apart in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there, to the end you may know that I am Yahweh on the earth. 23 I will put a division between my people and your people. This sign shall happen by tomorrow.”’” 24 Yahweh did so; and there came grievous swarms of flies into the house of Pharaoh, and into his servants’ houses. In all the land of Egypt the land was corrupted by reason of the swarms of flies.
25 Pharaoh called for Moses and for Aaron, and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God in the land!”
26 Moses said, “It isn’t appropriate to do so; for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to Yahweh our God. Behold, if we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, won’t they stone us? 27 We will go three days’ journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to Yahweh our God, as he shall command us.”
28 Pharaoh said, “I will let you go, that you may sacrifice to Yahweh your God in the wilderness, only you shall not go very far away. Pray for me.”
29 Moses said, “Behold, I am going out from you. I will pray to Yahweh that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, tomorrow; only don’t let Pharaoh deal deceitfully any more in not letting the people go to sacrifice to Yahweh.” 30 Moses went out from Pharaoh, and prayed to Yahweh. 31 Yahweh did according to the word of Moses, and he removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people. There remained not one. 32 Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also, and he didn’t let the people go.

The Second Plague: Frogs
8 [a] Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Let my people go, that (A)they may serve me. 2 But if you (B)refuse to let them go, behold, I will plague all your country with (C)frogs. 3 The Nile shall swarm with frogs that shall come up into your house and into (D)your bedroom and on your bed and into the houses of your servants and your people,[b] and into your ovens and your kneading bowls. 4 The frogs shall come up on you and on your people and on all your servants.”’” 5 [c] And the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, (E)‘Stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers, over the canals and over the pools, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt!’” 6 So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and (F)the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. 7 But (G)the magicians did the same by their secret arts and made frogs come up on the land of Egypt.
8 Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and said, (H)“Plead with the Lord to take away the frogs from me and from my people, and (I)I will let the people go to sacrifice to the Lord.” 9 Moses said to Pharaoh, “Be pleased to command me when (J)I am to plead for you and for your servants and for your people, that the frogs be cut off from you and your houses and be left only in the Nile.” 10 And he said, “Tomorrow.” Moses said, “Be it as you say, so (K)that you may know that (L)there is no one like the Lord our God. 11 The frogs shall go away from you and your houses and your servants and your people. They shall be left only in the Nile.” 12 So Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, and Moses cried to the Lord about the frogs, as he had agreed with Pharaoh.[d] 13 And the Lord did according to the word of Moses. The frogs died out in the houses, the courtyards, and the fields. 14 And they gathered them together in heaps, and the land stank. 15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was a (M)respite, he (N)hardened his heart and would not listen to them, as the Lord had said.
The Third Plague: Gnats
16 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, (O)‘Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, so that it may become gnats in all the land of Egypt.’” 17 And they did so. Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff and struck the dust of the earth, and (P)there were gnats on man and beast. All the dust of the earth became gnats in all the land of Egypt. 18 The (Q)magicians tried by their secret arts to produce gnats, but they could not. So there were gnats on man and beast. 19 Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is (R)the finger of God.” But Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them, as the Lord had said.
The Fourth Plague: Flies
20 Then the Lord said to Moses, (S)“Rise up early in the morning and present yourself to Pharaoh, as he goes out to the water, and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord, (T)“Let my people go, that they may serve me. 21 Or else, if you will not let my people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies on you and your servants and your people, and into your houses. And the houses of the Egyptians shall be filled with swarms of flies, and also the ground on which they stand. 22 But on that day (U)I will set apart the land of Goshen, where my people dwell, so that no swarms of flies shall be there, (V)that you may know that I am the Lord in the midst of the earth.[e] 23 Thus I will put a division[f] between my people and your people. Tomorrow this sign shall happen.”’” 24 And the Lord did so. (W)There came great swarms of flies into the house of Pharaoh and into his servants' houses. Throughout all the land of Egypt the land was ruined by the swarms of flies.
25 Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God within the land.” 26 But Moses said, “It would not be right to do so, for the offerings we shall sacrifice to the Lord our God are an (X)abomination to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice offerings (Y)abominable to the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not stone us? 27 We must go (Z)three days' journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the Lord our God (AA)as he tells us.” 28 So Pharaoh said, “I will let you go to sacrifice to the Lord your God in the wilderness; only you must not go very far away. (AB)Plead for me.” 29 Then Moses said, “Behold, I am going out from you and I will plead with the Lord that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, tomorrow. Only let not Pharaoh (AC)cheat again by not letting the people go to sacrifice to the Lord.” 30 So Moses went out from Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord. 31 And the Lord did as Moses asked, and removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people; not one remained. 32 But Pharaoh (AD)hardened his heart this time also, and did not let the people go.

8 Il Signore disse a Mosè: «Comanda ad Aronne: Stendi la mano con il tuo bastone sui fiumi, sui canali e sugli stagni e fà uscire le rane sul paese d'Egitto!». 2 Aronne stese la mano sulle acque d'Egitto e le rane uscirono e coprirono il paese d'Egitto.
3 Ma i maghi, con le loro magie, operarono la stessa cosa e fecero uscire le rane sul paese d'Egitto. 4 Il faraone fece chiamare Mosè e Aronne e disse: «Pregate il Signore, perché allontani le rane da me e dal mio popolo; io lascerò andare il popolo, perché possa sacrificare al Signore!». 5 Mosè disse al faraone: «Fammi l'onore di comandarmi per quando io devo pregare in favore tuo e dei tuoi ministri e del tuo popolo, per liberare dalle rane te e le tue case, in modo che ne rimangano soltanto nel Nilo». 6 Rispose: «Per domani». Riprese: «Secondo la tua parola! Perché tu sappia che non esiste nessuno pari al Signore, nostro Dio, 7 le rane si ritireranno da te e dalle tue case, dai tuoi servitori e dal tuo popolo: ne rimarranno soltanto nel Nilo». 8 Mosè e Aronne si allontanarono dal faraone e Mosè supplicò il Signore riguardo alle rane, che aveva mandate contro il faraone. 9 Il Signore operò secondo la parola di Mosè e le rane morirono nelle case, nei cortili e nei campi. 10 Le raccolsero in tanti mucchi e il paese ne fu ammorbato. 11 Ma il faraone vide ch'era intervenuto il sollievo, si ostinò e non diede loro ascolto, secondo quanto aveva predetto il Signore.
3a piaga: le zanzare
12 Quindi il Signore disse a Mosè: «Comanda ad Aronne: Stendi il tuo bastone, percuoti la polvere della terra: essa si muterà in zanzare in tutto il paese d'Egitto». 13 Così fecero: Aronne stese la mano con il suo bastone, colpì la polvere della terra e infierirono le zanzare sugli uomini e sulle bestie; tutta la polvere del paese si era mutata in zanzare in tutto l'Egitto. 14 I maghi fecero la stessa cosa con le loro magie, per produrre zanzare, ma non riuscirono e le zanzare infierivano sugli uomini e sulle bestie. 15 Allora i maghi dissero al faraone: «E' il dito di Dio!». Ma il cuore del faraone si ostinò e non diede ascolto, secondo quanto aveva predetto il Signore.
4a piaga: i mosconi
16 Poi il Signore disse a Mosè: «Alzati di buon mattino e presentati al faraone quando andrà alle acque; gli riferirai: Dice il Signore: Lascia partire il mio popolo, perché mi possa servire! 17 Se tu non lasci partire il mio popolo, ecco manderò su di te, sui tuoi ministri, sul tuo popolo e sulle tue case i mosconi: le case degli Egiziani saranno piene di mosconi e anche il suolo sul quale essi si trovano. 18 Ma in quel giorno io eccettuerò il paese di Gosen, dove dimora il mio popolo, in modo che là non vi siano mosconi, perché tu sappia che io, il Signore, sono in mezzo al paese! 19 Così farò distinzione tra il mio popolo e il tuo popolo. Domani avverrà questo segno».
20 Così fece il Signore: una massa imponente di mosconi entrò nella casa del faraone, nella casa dei suoi ministri e in tutto il paese d'Egitto; la regione era devastata a causa dei mosconi. 21 Il faraone fece chiamare Mosè e Aronne e disse: «Andate a sacrificare al vostro Dio nel paese!». 22 Ma rispose Mosè: «Non è opportuno far così perché quello che noi sacrifichiamo al Signore, nostro Dio, è abominio per gli Egiziani. Se noi facciamo un sacrificio abominevole agli Egiziani sotto i loro occhi, forse non ci lapideranno? 23 Andremo nel deserto, a tre giorni di cammino, e sacrificheremo al Signore, nostro Dio, secondo quanto egli ci ordinerà!». 24 Allora il faraone replicò: «Vi lascerò partire e potrete sacrificare al Signore nel deserto. Ma non andate troppo lontano e pregate per me». 25 Rispose Mosè: «Ecco, uscirò dalla tua presenza e pregherò il Signore; domani i mosconi si ritireranno dal faraone, dai suoi ministri e dal suo popolo. Però il faraone cessi di burlarsi di noi, non lasciando partire il popolo, perché possa sacrificare al Signore!». 26 Mosè si allontanò dal faraone e pregò il Signore. 27 Il Signore agì secondo la parola di Mosè e allontanò i mosconi dal faraone, dai suoi ministri e dal suo popolo: non ne restò neppure uno. 28 Ma il faraone si ostinò anche questa volta e non lasciò partire il popolo.
