2: Frogs
8 The Lord said to Moses, ‘Go to Pharaoh and say to him, “This is the message from the Lord: Let my people go so that they may worship me. 2 If you refuse to let them go, I will send thousands of frogs to bring trouble to your whole country. 3 The Nile river will be full of frogs. The frogs will go into your house. They will jump into your bed. They will go into the houses of your servants. They will go into the houses of your people. They will jump into your ovens and into your dishes. 4 The frogs will jump all over you. They will jump on your people and on all your servants.” ’
5 Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Say to Aaron, “Take your stick in your hand. Then raise your hand over the rivers, the streams and the pools. You will cause frogs to come up over the whole of Egypt.” ’
6 So Aaron lifted up his hand over the water of Egypt. Then the frogs came up and they covered the whole of Egypt.
7 But the magicians used their magic to do the same thing. They also made frogs come up on the land of Egypt.
8 Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron to come to him. He said, ‘Pray to the Lord. Ask him to remove the frogs from me and from my people. Then I will let your people go. They can offer sacrifices to the Lord.’
9 Moses said to Pharaoh, ‘I will let you choose the time when I should pray to God. Then I will ask God to do this for you, for your servants and for your people. I will ask God to remove the frogs from you and from all your houses. The frogs will remain only in the Nile river.’
10 Pharaoh said, ‘Do it tomorrow.’ Moses answered, ‘I will do what you have asked. Then you will know that there is nobody like the Lord our God. 11 The frogs will go away from you and your houses. They will go away from your servants and your people. They will remain only in the river.’
12 So Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh. Then Moses prayed to the Lord about the frogs that he had brought to punish Pharaoh. 13 And the Lord did what Moses asked. The frogs in the houses, in the yards and in the fields all died. 14 The people swept the frogs together to make big heaps. There was a very bad smell over the whole country. 15 But when Pharaoh saw that the trouble had gone, his mind became hard again. He refused to listen to Moses and Aaron. The Lord had said that this would happen, and it did!
3: Gnats
16 Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Say to Aaron, “Lift up your stick and hit the dirt on the ground. It will become gnats in the whole land of Egypt.” ’
17 Moses and Aaron obeyed God. Aaron lifted up his hand and he hit the dirt with his stick. The dirt became gnats that flew onto all the people and onto all the animals. The dirt on the ground became gnats all over Egypt. 18 Then the Egyptian magicians tried to use their magic to make gnats appear. But they could not do it. The gnats were on all the people and on all the animals.
19 Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, ‘This is the work of God.’ But there was no change in Pharaoh's thoughts. He would not listen to them. The Lord had said that this would happen, and it did!
4: Flies
20 Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Get up early in the morning. Meet Pharaoh when he goes out to the river. Then say to him, “The Lord says: You must let my people go. Let them go to worship me. 21 If you do not let my people go, I will send thousands of flies on you. I will send them on your servants and on your people. I will send them into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies. The flies will cover all the ground where people live.
22 But it will be different in the region of Goshen, where my people live. I will not send flies there. Then you will know that I, the Lord, am doing my work here in this land. 23 I will make a difference between my people and your people. This miracle will happen tomorrow.” ’
24 That is what the Lord did. Great numbers of flies came into Pharaoh's house and into his servants' houses. The flies went all over Egypt and they destroyed the whole land.
25 Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron to come to him. He said to them, ‘Go! You can offer sacrifices to your God here, in Egypt.’ 26 But Moses said, ‘It would not be right to do that. The Egyptians do not like our sacrifices of animals. If we offer these sacrifices to the Lord our God, the Egyptians will be angry with us. They will throw stones at us to kill us. 27 So we must go on a journey for three days into the desert. We will offer sacrifices to the Lord our God there, as he has told us to do.’
28 So Pharaoh said, ‘I will let you go. You may go into the desert and offer sacrifices to the Lord your God there. But do not go very far away. And pray for me too.’
29 Then Moses said, ‘I will leave you now, and I will pray to the Lord. Tomorrow, all the flies will go away from you, your officers and your people. But be careful! Do not deceive us, as you did before. You must really let the people go away to offer sacrifices to the Lord.’
30 So Moses left Pharaoh and he prayed to the Lord. 31 The Lord did what Moses asked him. All the flies left Pharaoh, his officers and his people. Not one fly remained! 32 But again, Pharaoh's mind became hard. He refused to let the people go.

8 Daarna zei de Heer tegen Mozes: "Ga naar de farao. Zeg tegen hem: 'Dit zegt de Heer: Laat mijn volk gaan, om Mij te dienen. 2 Als u hen niet wil laten gaan, zal Ik ervoor zorgen dat uw hele land krioelt van de kikkers. 3 De rivier zal vol kikkers zitten. Ze zullen uit het water komen en uw huis en slaapkamer binnen komen. Ze zullen zelfs in uw bed kruipen. Ook in de huizen van uw dienaren en van uw volk. Ze zullen zelfs in de brood-ovens en de pannen zitten. 4 De kikkers zullen uit de rivier komen, als straf voor u, uw volk en al uw dienaren.' "
5 Verder zei de Heer tegen Mozes: "Zeg tegen Aäron: 'Strek je hand met je staf uit over de rivieren, kanalen en plassen. Laat zo de kikkers over Egypte komen.' " 6 Toen strekte Aäron zijn hand uit over het water van Egypte. En de kikkers kwamen en bedekten het hele land. 7 Maar de tovenaars deden door hun toverkunsten hetzelfde, zodat zij óók kikkers tevoorschijn lieten komen.
8 Toen riep de farao Mozes en Aäron en zei: "Bid tot de Heer dat Hij de kikkers weghaalt! Dan zal ik het volk laten gaan om offers aan de Heer te brengen!" 9 Mozes antwoordde: "Zou u mij willen zeggen wanneer ik voor u, uw dienaren en uw volk moet bidden? Dan zal ik bidden dat de kikkers uit de huizen zullen verdwijnen en alleen in de rivier zullen overblijven." 10 Hij zei: "Morgen." Toen zei Mozes: "Ik zal doen wat u beveelt. Dan zult u toegeven dat er niemand is zoals onze Heer God. 11 De kikkers zullen uit uw huizen verdwijnen. Alleen in de rivier zullen ze overblijven."
12 Toen gingen Mozes en Aäron bij de farao weg. Mozes vroeg aan de Heer om een eind te maken aan de kikkerplaag waarmee Hij de farao had gestraft. 13 De Heer deed wat Mozes Hem had gevraagd. Alle kikkers in de huizen, paleizen en velden gingen dood. 14 De mensen verzamelden de dode kikkers in grote hopen. Het hele land stonk ervan. 15 Maar toen de farao zag dat de ellende voorbij was, bleef hij koppig en wilde hij niet naar hen luisteren – zoals de Heer ook gezegd had.
De derde ramp: luizen
16 De Heer zei tegen Mozes: "Zeg tegen Aäron: 'Sla met je staf op het stof op de grond. Dan zal het stof in heel Egypte veranderen in luizen.' "[a] 17 Toen sloeg Aäron met zijn staf op het stof op de grond. En er kwamen luizen op alle mensen en dieren. In heel Egypte veranderde het stof op de grond in luizen. 18 Ook de tovenaars sloegen met hun staf op de grond om door hun toverkunsten luizen tevoorschijn te toveren. Maar ze konden het niet. Er zaten luizen op alle mensen en dieren. 19 Toen zeiden de tovenaars tegen de farao: "Dit heeft God gedaan!" Maar de farao bleef koppig en hij wilde niet naar hen luisteren – zoals de Heer ook gezegd had.
De vierde ramp: ongedierte
20 De Heer zei tegen Mozes: "Sta morgen vroeg op en ga naar de farao. Hij gaat om die tijd altijd naar het water. Zeg tegen hem: 'Dit zegt de Heer: Laat mijn volk gaan om Mij te aanbidden. 21 Als u mijn volk niet laat gaan, zal Ik u, uw dienaren, uw volk en uw huizen straffen met grote aantallen van allerlei ongedierte.[b] De huizen van de Egyptenaren zullen vol ongedierte zijn. Zelfs de hele grond zal ermee bedekt zijn. 22 Maar Ik zal er voor zorgen dat er in het land Gosen, waar mijn volk woont, geen ongedierte komt. Zo zult u toegeven dat Ik, de Heer, in uw land ben.[c] 23 Uw volk zal last hebben van het ongedierte, maar mijn volk niet. Morgen zal gebeuren wat Ik gezegd heb.' " 24 En de Heer deed dit. Er kwamen grote aantallen van allerlei ongedierte in het huis van de farao en van zijn dienaren en in heel Egypte. In het hele land ontstond veel schade door het ongedierte.
25 Toen liet de farao Mozes en Aäron komen en zei: "Ga maar aan jullie God offeren, hier in dit land." 26 Maar Mozes zei: "Dat is onmogelijk. We willen aan onze Heer God dieren offeren die voor de Egyptenaren heilig zijn. Als de Egyptenaren ons die dieren zien slachten, zullen ze ons doden. 27 Nee, we willen drie dagen ver de woestijn in reizen. Daar zullen we aan onze Heer God de offers brengen die Hij ons dan noemen zal." 28 Toen zei de farao: "Ik zal jullie laten gaan. Jullie mogen aan jullie Heer God offers gaan brengen in de woestijn. Maar jullie mogen niet te ver weg gaan. En bid voor mij." 29 Toen zei Mozes: "Ik ga nu bij u weg en zal tot de Heer bidden. Morgen zal al het ongedierte weg zijn. Maar u mag ons niet langer bedriegen. Houd het volk niet langer tegen om aan de Heer offers te gaan brengen."
30 Toen ging Mozes bij de farao weg en bad tot de Heer. 31 De Heer deed wat Mozes Hem vroeg. Overal verdween het ongedierte. Er bleef niets van over. 32 Toch bleef de farao ook deze keer koppig en liet het volk niet gaan.

3 And the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly, which shall go up and come into thine house, and into thy bedchamber, and upon thy bed, and into the house of thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thine ovens, and into thy kneadingtroughs:
4 And the frogs shall come up both on thee, and upon thy people, and upon all thy servants.
5 And the Lord spake unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch forth thine hand with thy rod over the streams, over the rivers, and over the ponds, and cause frogs to come up upon the land of Egypt.
6 And Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt; and the frogs came up, and covered the land of Egypt.
7 And the magicians did so with their enchantments, and brought up frogs upon the land of Egypt.
8 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, Intreat the Lord, that he may take away the frogs from me, and from my people; and I will let the people go, that they may do sacrifice unto the Lord.
9 And Moses said unto Pharaoh, Glory over me: when shall I intreat for thee, and for thy servants, and for thy people, to destroy the frogs from thee and thy houses, that they may remain in the river only?
10 And he said, To morrow. And he said, Be it according to thy word: that thou mayest know that there is none like unto the Lord our God.
11 And the frogs shall depart from thee, and from thy houses, and from thy servants, and from thy people; they shall remain in the river only.
12 And Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh: and Moses cried unto the Lord because of the frogs which he had brought against Pharaoh.
13 And the Lord did according to the word of Moses; and the frogs died out of the houses, out of the villages, and out of the fields.
14 And they gathered them together upon heaps: and the land stank.
15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was respite, he hardened his heart, and hearkened not unto them; as the Lord had said.
16 And the Lord said unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch out thy rod, and smite the dust of the land, that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt.
17 And they did so; for Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod, and smote the dust of the earth, and it became lice in man, and in beast; all the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.
18 And the magicians did so with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not: so there were lice upon man, and upon beast.
19 Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God: and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the Lord had said.
20 And the Lord said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh; lo, he cometh forth to the water; and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Let my people go, that they may serve me.
21 Else, if thou wilt not let my people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies upon thee, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thy houses: and the houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground whereon they are.
22 And I will sever in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there; to the end thou mayest know that I am the Lord in the midst of the earth.
23 And I will put a division between my people and thy people: to morrow shall this sign be.
24 And the Lord did so; and there came a grievous swarm of flies into the house of Pharaoh, and into his servants' houses, and into all the land of Egypt: the land was corrupted by reason of the swarm of flies.
25 And Pharaoh called for Moses and for Aaron, and said, Go ye, sacrifice to your God in the land.
26 And Moses said, It is not meet so to do; for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to the Lord our God: lo, shall we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, and will they not stone us?
27 We will go three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to the Lord our God, as he shall command us.
28 And Pharaoh said, I will let you go, that ye may sacrifice to the Lord your God in the wilderness; only ye shall not go very far away: intreat for me.
29 And Moses said, Behold, I go out from thee, and I will intreat the Lord that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, to morrow: but let not Pharaoh deal deceitfully any more in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the Lord.
30 And Moses went out from Pharaoh, and intreated the Lord.
31 And the Lord did according to the word of Moses; and he removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people; there remained not one.
32 And Pharaoh hardened his heart at this time also, neither would he let the people go.

The Second Plague: Frogs

10 So he said, “Tomorrow.” And he said, “Let it be according to your word, that you may know that (J)there is no one like the Lord our God. 11 And the frogs shall depart from you, from your houses, from your servants, and from your people. They shall remain in the river only.”
12 Then Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh. And Moses (K)cried out to the Lord concerning the frogs which He had brought against Pharaoh. 13 So the Lord did according to the word of Moses. And the frogs died out of the houses, out of the courtyards, and out of the fields. 14 They gathered them together in heaps, and the land stank. 15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was (L)relief, (M)he hardened his heart and did not heed them, as the Lord had said.
The Third Plague: Lice
16 So the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your rod, and strike the dust of the land, so that it may become [c]lice throughout all the land of Egypt.’ ” 17 And they did so. For Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod and struck the dust of the earth, and (N)it became lice on man and beast. All the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.
18 Now (O)the magicians so worked with their [d]enchantments to bring forth lice, but they (P)could not. So there were lice on man and beast. 19 Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is (Q)the[e] finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s (R)heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, just as the Lord had said.
The Fourth Plague: Flies
20 And the Lord said to Moses, (S)“Rise early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh as he comes out to the water. Then say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: (T)“Let My people go, that they may serve Me. 21 Or else, if you will not let My people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies on you and your servants, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground on which they stand. 22 And in that day (U)I will set apart the land of (V)Goshen, in which My people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there, in order that you may (W)know that I am the Lord in the midst of the (X)land. 23 I will [f]make a difference between My people and your people. Tomorrow this (Y)sign shall be.” ’ ” 24 And the Lord did so. (Z)Thick swarms of flies came into the house of Pharaoh, into his servants’ houses, and into all the land of Egypt. The land was corrupted because of the swarms of flies.
25 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God in the land.”
26 And Moses said, “It is not right to do so, for we would be sacrificing (AA)the abomination of the Egyptians to the Lord our God. If we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, then will they not [g]stone us? 27 We will go (AB)three days’ journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the Lord our God as (AC)He will command us.”
28 So Pharaoh said, “I will let you go, that you may sacrifice to the Lord your God in the wilderness; only you shall not go very far away. (AD)Intercede for me.”
29 Then Moses said, “Indeed I am going out from you, and I will entreat the Lord, that the swarms of flies may depart tomorrow from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people. But let Pharaoh not (AE)deal deceitfully anymore in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the Lord.”
30 So Moses went out from Pharaoh and (AF)entreated the Lord. 31 And the Lord did according to the word of Moses; He removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people. Not one remained. 32 But Pharaoh (AG)hardened his heart at this time also; neither would he let the people go.
