Overal kikkers, muggen en steekvliegen

8 Na die week zei God tegen Mozes: ‘Ga weer naar de farao en zeg tegen hem: “De Here zegt: laat mijn volk gaan om Mij te dienen. 2 Als u hun dat weigert, zal Ik uw land straffen met een kikkerplaag. 3,4 De Nijl zal wemelen van de kikkers en zij zullen overal komen, in uw huis, uw slaapkamer, uw bed. In alle huizen van uw dienaren en uw volk zult u kikkers vinden, zelfs in de bakovens zullen ze zitten. De kikkers zullen u, uw dienaren en uw onderdanen het leven onmogelijk maken.” ’

5 De Here vervolgde: ‘Zeg tegen Aäron dat hij zijn arm uitstrekt over de rivieren, de kanalen en de poelen en dat hij het land laat wemelen van de kikkers.’ 6 Toen strekte Aäron zijn arm uit over de Egyptische wateren en de kikkers kwamen van alle kanten opzetten en overstroomden het hele land. 7 Maar de geleerden deden met hun toverkunsten hetzelfde en lieten op hun beurt een golf van kikkers over het land komen.

8 De farao riep Mozes en Aäron bij zich en zei: ‘Bid tot uw God en vraag Hem of Hij de kikkers wil weghalen, dan zal ik uw volk laten gaan zodat zij kunnen offeren.’ 9 Mozes zei: ‘U moet maar zeggen wanneer u wilt dat ik voor u zal bidden, opdat de kikkers zullen verdwijnen. Alleen in de Nijl zullen dan nog kikkers achterblijven.’ 10 De farao antwoordde: ‘Doe het morgen.’ En Mozes zei: ‘Zoals u wilt. U zult dan zien dat niemand gelijk is aan de Here, onze God. 11 De kikkers zullen u, uw huizen, uw dienaren en uw onderdanen met rust laten, alleen in de Nijl zullen er nog achterblijven.’

12 Toen verlieten Mozes en Aäron het paleis van de farao en Mozes bad tot de Here en vroeg Hem de kikkerplaag te beëindigen.

13 De Here verhoorde Mozesʼ gebed en liet de kikkers sterven. Overal lagen dode kikkers, die een vieze stank verspreidden. 14 Ze werden op grote hopen bij elkaar gegooid. 15 Toen de farao echter zag dat de overlast van de kikkers was verdwenen, verhardde hij zijn hart en weigerde het volk te laten gaan. Precies zoals de Here had voorzegd.

16 De Here zei toen tegen Mozes: ‘Zeg tegen Aäron dat hij met zijn staf op het stof van de aarde slaat. Het stof zal veranderen in muggen, overal in Egypte.’ 17 Mozes en Aäron voerden Gods opdracht uit. Aäron sloeg met zijn staf in het stof van de aarde. Opeens verschenen in heel Egypte grote hoeveelheden muggen, die op de Egyptenaren en hun dieren neerstreken. Al het stof veranderde in muggen. 18 Ook deze keer probeerden de geleerden hen weer met hun toverkunsten na te doen, maar het lukte niet. 19 ‘Dit is de hand van God,’ zeiden de geleerden tegen de farao. Maar de farao was opnieuw koppig. Hij weigerde naar hen te luisteren, precies zoals de Here het van tevoren had gezegd.

20 Toen zei de Here tegen Mozes: ‘Sta vroeg op en klamp de farao aan wanneer hij naar de rivier gaat om te baden. Zeg tegen hem: “De Here zegt: laat mijn volk gaan om Mij te dienen. 21 Als u dat niet doet, zal Ik steekvliegen op u, uw dienaren en uw onderdanen loslaten. De huizen en zelfs de grond waarop zij lopen, zal wemelen van de steekvliegen. 22,23 Maar in het land Gosen waar mijn volk woont, zullen geen steekvliegen voorkomen, zodat u zult merken dat Ik, de Here, in dit land ben. Ik zal mijn volk uit de handen van uw volk redden!” ’ 24 En de Here voerde zijn dreigement uit: in alle huizen en in heel Egypte wemelde het van de steekvliegen.

25 De farao ontbood Mozes en Aäron opnieuw en zei: ‘Jullie kunnen je gang gaan. Jullie mogen in dit land offers brengen aan je God, dan hoeven jullie niet de woestijn in te trekken.’ 26 Maar Mozes antwoordde: ‘Dat kan niet. De Egyptenaren zullen er zeker aanstoot aan nemen als wij hier aan onze God offeren. Ze zouden ons stenigen! 27 Nee, wij willen drie dagreizen ver de woestijn intrekken en offers brengen aan de Here, onze God, zoals Hij het ons heeft opgedragen.’

28 De farao gaf toe: ‘Goed, ik zal het volk de woestijn in laten gaan om offers te brengen aan de Here, hun God, maar jullie mogen niet te ver weggaan. En vergeet niet ook voor mij tot jullie God te bidden.’ 29 Toen zei Mozes: ‘Ik ga nu weg, ik zal de Here bidden en Hem vragen of Hij de steekvliegen uit de huizen en het land wil weghalen. Morgen zullen er geen steekvliegen meer zijn. Maar pas op dat u niet weer liegt en het volk opnieuw verhindert de Here een offer te brengen.’

30 Daarop verliet Mozes de farao en bad tot de Here. 31 En de Here deed wat Mozes tegen de farao had gezegd, de steekvliegen verlieten de farao, zijn dienaren en zijn onderdanen. Er bleef er niet één over. 32 Maar toch bleef de farao ook deze keer hardnekkig weigeren het volk te laten gaan.

Segunda plaga: las ranas

8 [a]Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés: «Ve a Faraón y dile: “Así dice el Señor: ‘Deja ir a Mi pueblo para que me sirva(A). 2 Pero si te niegas a dejarlos ir, entonces heriré todo tu territorio con ranas. 3 El Nilo se llenará[b] de ranas, que subirán y entrarán en tu casa, en tu alcoba y sobre tu cama(B), en las casas de tus siervos y en tu pueblo, en tus hornos y en tus artesas. 4 Subirán las ranas sobre ti, sobre tu pueblo y sobre todos tus siervos’”». 5 [c]Dijo además el Señor a Moisés: «Dile a Aarón: “Extiende tu mano con tu vara sobre los ríos, sobre los arroyos[d] y sobre los estanques(C), y haz que suban ranas sobre la tierra de Egipto”».

6 Aarón extendió su mano sobre las aguas de Egipto, y las ranas subieron y cubrieron[e] la tierra de Egipto(D). 7 Los magos[f] hicieron lo mismo[g] con sus encantamientos[h](E), e hicieron subir ranas sobre la tierra de Egipto.

8 Entonces Faraón llamó a Moisés y a Aarón(F), y dijo: «Rueguen al Señor para que quite las ranas de mí y de mi pueblo, y yo dejaré ir al pueblo(G) para que ofrezca sacrificios al Señor(H)». 9 Moisés dijo a Faraón: «Dígnate decirme[i] cuándo he de rogar por ti, por tus siervos y por tu pueblo, para que las ranas sean quitadas[j] de ti y de tus casas y queden solamente en el río».

10 «Mañana», respondió Faraón. Entonces Moisés dijo: «Sea conforme a tu palabra para que sepas que no hay nadie como el Señor nuestro Dios(I). 11 Las ranas se alejarán de ti, de tus casas, de tus siervos y de tu pueblo(J); solo quedarán en el Nilo».

12 Entonces Moisés y Aarón salieron de la presencia de Faraón, y Moisés clamó al Señor(K) acerca de las ranas que Él había puesto sobre Faraón. 13 Y el Señor hizo conforme a la palabra de Moisés, y murieron las ranas en las casas, en los patios y en los campos. 14 Las juntaron en montones, y la tierra se corrompió[k]. 15 Pero al ver Faraón que había alivio, endureció[l] su corazón y no los escuchó, tal como el Señor había dicho(L).

Tercera plaga: los piojos

16 Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés: «Dile a Aarón: “Extiende tu vara y golpea el polvo de la tierra para que se convierta en piojos[m] por toda la tierra de Egipto”». 17 Y así lo hicieron. Aarón extendió su mano con su vara, y golpeó el polvo de la tierra, y hubo piojos[n] en hombres y animales. Todo el polvo de la tierra se convirtió en piojos[o] por todo el país de Egipto(M).

18 Los magos[p] trataron de producir piojos[q] con sus encantamientos[r], pero no pudieron(N). Hubo, pues, piojos en hombres y animales. 19 Entonces los magos[s] dijeron a Faraón: «Este es el dedo de Dios(O)». Pero el corazón de Faraón se endureció[t] y no los escuchó, tal como el Señor había dicho.

Cuarta plaga: los insectos

20 El Señor dijo a Moisés: «Levántate muy de mañana y ponte delante de Faraón cuando salga[u] del agua(P), dile: “Así dice el Señor: ‘Deja ir a Mi pueblo para que me sirva(Q). 21 Porque si no dejas ir a Mi pueblo, entonces enviaré enjambres de insectos sobre ti y sobre tus siervos, sobre tu pueblo y dentro de tus casas. Las casas de los egipcios se llenarán de enjambres de insectos, y también el suelo sobre el cual están. 22 Pero en aquel día Yo pondré aparte la tierra de Gosén en la que mora[v] Mi pueblo(R), para que no haya allí enjambres de insectos, a fin de que sepas que Yo, el Señor, estoy[w] en medio de la tierra(S). 23 Yo haré distinción[x] entre Mi pueblo y tu pueblo. Mañana tendrá lugar esta señal’”».

24 Así lo hizo el Señor. Y entraron grandes[y] enjambres de insectos en la casa de Faraón y en las casas de sus siervos, y en todo el país de Egipto la tierra fue devastada a causa de los enjambres de insectos(T).

25 Entonces llamó Faraón a Moisés y a Aarón, y dijo(U): «Vayan, ofrezcan sacrificio a su Dios dentro del país(V)». 26 «No conviene que lo hagamos así», respondió Moisés, «porque es abominación para[z] los egipcios lo que sacrificaremos al Señor nuestro Dios(W). Si sacrificamos lo que es abominación para[aa] los egipcios delante de sus ojos, ¿no nos apedrearán? 27 Andaremos una distancia de tres días de camino en el desierto, y ofreceremos sacrificios al Señor nuestro Dios, tal como Él nos manda[ab](X)».

28 Faraón dijo: «Los dejaré ir para que ofrezcan sacrificio al Señor su Dios en el desierto(Y), solo que no vayan muy lejos. Oren por mí(Z)». 29 «Voy a salir de tu presencia», le contestó Moisés «y rogaré al Señor que los enjambres de insectos se alejen mañana de Faraón, de sus siervos y de su pueblo. Pero que Faraón no vuelva a obrar con engaño, no dejando ir al pueblo a ofrecer sacrificios al Señor(AA)».

30 Salió Moisés de la presencia de Faraón y oró al Señor(AB). 31 Y el Señor hizo como Moisés le pidió[ac], y quitó los enjambres de insectos de Faraón, de sus siervos y de su pueblo. No quedó ni uno solo. 32 Pero Faraón endureció[ad] su corazón también esta vez y no dejó salir al pueblo(AC).

8 1 [a]Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship(A) me. 2 If you refuse to let them go, I will send a plague of frogs(B) on your whole country. 3 The Nile will teem with frogs. They will come up into your palace and your bedroom and onto your bed, into the houses of your officials and on your people,(C) and into your ovens and kneading troughs.(D) 4 The frogs will come up on you and your people and all your officials.’”

5 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your staff(E) over the streams and canals and ponds, and make frogs(F) come up on the land of Egypt.’”

6 So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs(G) came up and covered the land. 7 But the magicians did the same things by their secret arts;(H) they also made frogs come up on the land of Egypt.

8 Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Pray(I) to the Lord to take the frogs away from me and my people, and I will let your people go to offer sacrifices(J) to the Lord.”

9 Moses said to Pharaoh, “I leave to you the honor of setting the time(K) for me to pray for you and your officials and your people that you and your houses may be rid of the frogs, except for those that remain in the Nile.”

10 “Tomorrow,” Pharaoh said.

Moses replied, “It will be as you say, so that you may know there is no one like the Lord our God.(L) 11 The frogs will leave you and your houses, your officials and your people; they will remain only in the Nile.”

12 After Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh, Moses cried out to the Lord about the frogs he had brought on Pharaoh. 13 And the Lord did what Moses asked.(M) The frogs died in the houses, in the courtyards and in the fields. 14 They were piled into heaps, and the land reeked of them. 15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief,(N) he hardened his heart(O) and would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said.

The Plague of Gnats

16 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff(P) and strike the dust of the ground,’ and throughout the land of Egypt the dust will become gnats.” 17 They did this, and when Aaron stretched out his hand with the staff and struck the dust of the ground, gnats(Q) came on people and animals. All the dust throughout the land of Egypt became gnats. 18 But when the magicians(R) tried to produce gnats by their secret arts,(S) they could not.

Since the gnats were on people and animals everywhere, 19 the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger(T) of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart(U) was hard and he would not listen,(V) just as the Lord had said.

The Plague of Flies

20 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning(W) and confront Pharaoh as he goes to the river and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship(X) me. 21 If you do not let my people go, I will send swarms of flies on you and your officials, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies; even the ground will be covered with them.

22 “‘But on that day I will deal differently with the land of Goshen,(Y) where my people live;(Z) no swarms of flies will be there, so that you will know(AA) that I, the Lord, am in this land. 23 I will make a distinction[b] between my people and your people.(AB) This sign will occur tomorrow.’”

24 And the Lord did this. Dense swarms of flies poured into Pharaoh’s palace and into the houses of his officials; throughout Egypt the land was ruined by the flies.(AC)

25 Then Pharaoh summoned(AD) Moses and Aaron and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God here in the land.”

26 But Moses said, “That would not be right. The sacrifices we offer the Lord our God would be detestable to the Egyptians.(AE) And if we offer sacrifices that are detestable in their eyes, will they not stone us? 27 We must take a three-day journey(AF) into the wilderness to offer sacrifices(AG) to the Lord our God, as he commands us.”

28 Pharaoh said, “I will let you go to offer sacrifices to the Lord your God in the wilderness, but you must not go very far. Now pray(AH) for me.”

29 Moses answered, “As soon as I leave you, I will pray to the Lord, and tomorrow the flies will leave Pharaoh and his officials and his people. Only let Pharaoh be sure that he does not act deceitfully(AI) again by not letting the people go to offer sacrifices to the Lord.”

30 Then Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord,(AJ) 31 and the Lord did what Moses asked. The flies left Pharaoh and his officials and his people; not a fly remained. 32 But this time also Pharaoh hardened his heart(AK) and would not let the people go.

The Second Plague: Frogs

8 And the Lord spoke to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Let My people go, (A)that they may serve Me. 2 But if you (B)refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all your territory with (C)frogs. 3 So the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly, which shall go up and come into your house, into your (D)bedroom, on your bed, into the houses of your servants, on your people, into your ovens, and into your kneading bowls. 4 And the frogs shall come up on you, on your people, and on all your servants.” ’ ”

5 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, “Say to Aaron, (E)‘Stretch out your hand with your rod over the streams, over the rivers, and over the ponds, and cause frogs to come up on the land of Egypt.’ ” 6 So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and (F)the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. 7 (G)And the magicians did so with their [a]enchantments, and brought up frogs on the land of Egypt.

8 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, (H)“Entreat[b] the Lord that He may take away the frogs from me and from my people; and I will let the people (I)go, that they may sacrifice to the Lord.”

9 And Moses said to Pharaoh, “Accept the honor of saying when I shall intercede for you, for your servants, and for your people, to destroy the frogs from you and your houses, that they may remain in the river only.”

10 So he said, “Tomorrow.” And he said, “Let it be according to your word, that you may know that (J)there is no one like the Lord our God. 11 And the frogs shall depart from you, from your houses, from your servants, and from your people. They shall remain in the river only.”

12 Then Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh. And Moses (K)cried out to the Lord concerning the frogs which He had brought against Pharaoh. 13 So the Lord did according to the word of Moses. And the frogs died out of the houses, out of the courtyards, and out of the fields. 14 They gathered them together in heaps, and the land stank. 15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was (L)relief, (M)he hardened his heart and did not heed them, as the Lord had said.

The Third Plague: Lice

16 So the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your rod, and strike the dust of the land, so that it may become [c]lice throughout all the land of Egypt.’ ” 17 And they did so. For Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod and struck the dust of the earth, and (N)it became lice on man and beast. All the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.

18 Now (O)the magicians so worked with their [d]enchantments to bring forth lice, but they (P)could not. So there were lice on man and beast. 19 Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is (Q)the[e] finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s (R)heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, just as the Lord had said.

The Fourth Plague: Flies

20 And the Lord said to Moses, (S)“Rise early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh as he comes out to the water. Then say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: (T)“Let My people go, that they may serve Me. 21 Or else, if you will not let My people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies on you and your servants, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground on which they stand. 22 And in that day (U)I will set apart the land of (V)Goshen, in which My people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there, in order that you may (W)know that I am the Lord in the midst of the (X)land. 23 I will [f]make a difference between My people and your people. Tomorrow this (Y)sign shall be.” ’ ” 24 And the Lord did so. (Z)Thick swarms of flies came into the house of Pharaoh, into his servants’ houses, and into all the land of Egypt. The land was corrupted because of the swarms of flies.

25 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God in the land.”

26 And Moses said, “It is not right to do so, for we would be sacrificing (AA)the abomination of the Egyptians to the Lord our God. If we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, then will they not [g]stone us? 27 We will go (AB)three days’ journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the Lord our God as (AC)He will command us.”

28 So Pharaoh said, “I will let you go, that you may sacrifice to the Lord your God in the wilderness; only you shall not go very far away. (AD)Intercede for me.”

29 Then Moses said, “Indeed I am going out from you, and I will entreat the Lord, that the swarms of flies may depart tomorrow from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people. But let Pharaoh not (AE)deal deceitfully anymore in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the Lord.”

30 So Moses went out from Pharaoh and (AF)entreated the Lord. 31 And the Lord did according to the word of Moses; He removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people. Not one remained. 32 But Pharaoh (AG)hardened his heart at this time also; neither would he let the people go.
