5 (vii) After that, Moshe and Aharon came and said to Pharaoh, “Here is what Adonai, the God of Isra’el, says: ‘Let my people go, so that they can celebrate a festival in the desert to honor me.’” 2 But Pharaoh replied, “Who is Adonai, that I should obey when he says to let Isra’el go? I don’t know Adonai, and I also won’t let Isra’el go.” 3 They said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us go three days’ journey into the desert, so that we can sacrifice to Adonai our God. Otherwise, he may strike us with a plague or with the sword.” 4 The king of Egypt answered them, “Moshe and Aharon, what do you mean by taking the people away from their work? Get back to your labor! 5 Look!” Pharaoh added, “the population of the land has grown, yet you are trying to have them stop working!”
6 That same day Pharaoh ordered the slavemasters and the people’s foremen, 7 “You are no longer to provide straw for the bricks the people are making, as you did before. Let them go and gather straw for themselves. 8 But you will require them to produce the same quantity of bricks as before, don’t reduce it, because they’re lazing around. This is why they’re crying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’ 9 Give these people harder work to do. That will keep them too busy to pay attention to speeches full of lies.”
10 The people’s slavemasters went out, their foremen too, and said to the people, “Here is what Pharaoh says: ‘I will no longer give you straw. 11 You go, yourselves, and get straw wherever you can find it. But your output is not to be reduced.’” 12 So the people were dispersed throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw. 13 The slavemasters kept pressing them. “Keep working! Make your daily quota, just as when straw was provided.” 14 The foremen of the people of Isra’el, whom Pharaoh’s slavemasters had appointed to be over them, were flogged and asked, “Why haven’t you fulfilled your quota of bricks yesterday and today, as you did formerly?”
15 Then the foremen of the people of Isra’el came and complained to Pharaoh: “Why are you treating your servants this way? 16 No straw is given to your servants, yet they keep telling us to make bricks. And now your servants are being flogged, but the fault lies with your own people.” 17 “Lazy!” he retorted, “You’re just lazy! That’s why you say, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to Adonai.’ 18 Get going now, and get back to work! No straw will be given to you, and you will still deliver the full amount of bricks.” 19 When they said, “You are not to reduce your daily production quota of bricks,” the foremen of the people of Isra’el could see that they were in deep trouble.
20 As they were leaving Pharaoh, they encountered Moshe and Aharon standing by the road; 21 and they said to them, “May Adonai look at you and judge accordingly, because you have made us utterly abhorrent in the view of Pharaoh and his servants, and you have put a sword in their hands to kill us!” (Maftir) 22 Moshe returned to Adonai and said, “Adonai, why have you treated this people so terribly? What has been the value of sending me? 23 For ever since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has dealt terribly with this people! And you haven’t rescued your people at all!”

Moisés y Aarón ante el faraón
5 Después de esto, Moisés y Aarón se fueron a ver al faraón y le dijeron:
— Esto dice el Señor, Dios de Israel: deja salir a mi pueblo para que celebre en mi honor una fiesta en el desierto.
2 Pero el faraón respondió:
— ¿Quién es el Señor para que yo lo obedezca y deje salir a los israelitas? Ni conozco al Señor, ni dejaré salir a los israelitas.
3 Replicaron Moisés y Aarón:
— El Dios de los hebreos se nos ha manifestado; permítenos, pues, hacer tres días de camino por el desierto para ofrecer sacrificios al Señor, nuestro Dios; de no hacerlo, nos herirá con epidemias y guerras.
4 Pero el rey de Egipto les dijo:
— Moisés y Aarón, ¿por qué distraéis al pueblo de su trabajo? ¡Volved a vuestros quehaceres!
5 Y añadió:
— Ahora que el pueblo es numeroso, ¿pretendéis que interrumpan sus trabajos?
6 Aquel mismo día el faraón dio a los capataces del pueblo y a los inspectores de las obras las siguientes instrucciones:
7 — A partir de ahora no volveréis a proveer de paja a los israelitas, como antes hacíais, para que fabriquen los adobes; ¡que vayan ellos mismos a buscarla! 8 Pero exigidles la misma cantidad de adobes que antes. ¡No les perdonéis ni un solo adobe! Son unos holgazanes y por eso gritan: “¡Vayamos a ofrecer sacrificios a nuestro Dios!”. 9 Haced más duro su trabajo, para que estén siempre ocupados y no atiendan a patrañas.
10 Los capataces y los inspectores de las obras salieron y dijeron al pueblo:
— El faraón ha ordenado que en adelante no se os proporcione paja. 11 Iréis vosotros mismos a buscarla donde podáis sin que por eso se os disminuya en nada la tarea.
12 El pueblo se dispersó por todo el territorio de Egipto en busca de rastrojos para abastecerse de paja. 13 Los capataces los apremiaban diciendo:
— ¡Completad vuestro trabajo de cada día como cuando se os proporcionaba paja!
14 Los capataces egipcios maltrataban a los israelitas encargados de dirigir los trabajos y los recriminaban diciendo:
— ¿Cómo es que ni ayer ni hoy habéis cubierto el cupo de adobes que se os había asignado?
15 Entonces fueron los encargados israelitas a quejarse al faraón, y le dijeron:
— ¿Por qué tratas así a tus siervos? 16 Se nos exige que hagamos adobes, pero no se nos proporciona paja. Somos nosotros los que recibimos los golpes, cuando el culpable es tu propio pueblo.
17 El faraón les contestó:
— ¡Holgazanes!, ¡no sois más que una partida de holgazanes! Por eso andáis diciendo: “Vamos a ofrecer sacrificios al Señor”. 18 ¡A trabajar! No se os proporcionará paja, pero debéis hacer igual cantidad de adobes que antes.
19 Los encargados israelitas se vieron en un aprieto cuando les dijeron que no se les rebajaría la producción diaria de adobes. 20 Cuando salían del palacio se encontraron con Moisés y Aarón, que los estaban esperando, 21 y les dijeron:
— ¡Que el Señor juzgue y sentencie! Por vuestra culpa el faraón y su corte nos odian. Habéis puesto en su mano la espada para que nos maten.
22 Entonces Moisés se quejó al Señor diciendo:
— ¿Por qué afliges a este pueblo? ¿Para qué me has enviado? 23 Desde que fui a hablar en tu nombre al faraón, él está maltratando a tu pueblo y tú no has hecho nada para librarlo.
