5 ¶ And afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go that they may celebrate a feast unto me in the wilderness.
2 And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should hearken to his voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.
3 ¶ And they said, The God of the Hebrews has found us; therefore we shall go three days’ journey into the desert and sacrifice unto the LORD our God lest he encounter us with pestilence or with the sword.
4 Then the king of Egypt said unto them, Why do ye, Moses and Aaron, keep the people from their works? Go unto your burdens.
5 Pharaoh also said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them cease from their burdens.
6 And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people and their officers, saying,
7 Ye shall no longer give the people firewood to make brick as until now; let them go and gather firewood for themselves.
8 And the tally of the bricks which they made before, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish any of it; for they are idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.
9 Let more work be laid upon them that they may occupy themselves with it; and let them not regard words of deception.
10 ¶ And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you firewood.
11 Go ye, gather firewood where ye can find it; yet none of your work shall be diminished.
12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather brush for firewood.
13 And the taskmasters hasted them, saying, Fulfil your works, your daily quotas, as when there was firewood.
14 And the officers of the sons of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and they demanded, Why have ye not fulfilled your quotas in making brick both yesterday and today, as until now?
15 ¶ Then the officers of the sons of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Why doest thou deal thus with thy slaves?
16 There is no firewood given unto thy slaves, yet they say to us, Make brick. Behold, thy slaves are beaten; and thy people sin.
17 And he replied, Ye are idle, ye are idle, therefore ye say, Let us go and sacrifice unto the LORD.
18 Go therefore now and work, for no firewood shall be given you, yet ye shall deliver the tally of bricks.
19 Then the officers of the sons of Israel saw that they were afflicted after it was said, Ye shall not diminish any from the bricks of your daily quota.
20 And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh;
21 and they said unto them, The LORD look upon you and judge because ye have made our savour to be a stench before Pharaoh and his slaves, putting a sword in their hands to slay us.
22 Then Moses returned unto the LORD and said, Lord, why hast thou so afflicted this people? Why is it that thou hast sent me?
23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he has afflicted this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.

Gud sänder Mose till Farao
5 När Mose och Aron hade talat med de äldste, gick de för att träffa Farao. Vi har ett budskap till dig från Herren, Israels Gud, sa de. Herren säger: 'Släpp mitt folk, så att de kan bege sig ut i öknen för att där fira högtid och tillbe mig.'
2 Jaså, på det sättet svarade Farao. Men vem är då Herren, eftersom jag skulle rätta mig efter honom och släppa Israel? Jag känner inte honom och tänker inte låta Israel lämna landet.
3 Men Aron och Mose stod på sig: Hebreernas Gud har uppenbarat sig för oss, förklarade de. Vi måste vandra tre dagsresor ut i öknen och offra till Herren, vår Gud. Om vi inte lyder honom kommer vi att dö genom svärd eller pest.
Ännu mer arbete
4-5 Vad tror ni att ni är för ena som kan komma på det här sättet och dra folket bort från deras arbete? röt Farao. Gå nu tillbaka och sköt era arbeten! röt Farao.
6 Samma dag gav Farao order till dem som var fogdar och tillsyningsmän över Israel:
7-8 Nu ska ni inte längre ge folket halm till teglet, det får de samla ihop själva. Men ni får se till att produktionen inte minskas med en enda tegelsten. De har tydligen inte tillräckligt att göra utan är lata. Det är därför de bråkar om att gå ut i öknen och offra till sin Gud.
9 Låt dem få arbeta riktigt hårt, så de slutar att lyssna på Mose och Aron och alla deras lögner!
10-11 Fogdarna och tillsyningsmännen gjorde som de blivit tillsagda och sa till folket: Farao har gett order om att ni inte längre ska få någon halm. Ni får själva gå och samla ihop den, men ni ska ändå göra lika mycket tegel som tidigare!
12 Man spred sig då över hela landet för att samla strån som kunde användas för att förstärka leran i teglet.
13 Fogdarna var mycket hårda mot dem: Ni måste fylla er dagliga kvot, precis som tidigare, befallde de.
14 Och de slog dem som blivit tillsatta som arbetsledare bland folket. Varför har ni inte gjort fullt dagsverke, vare sig i går eller i dag? skrek de åt dem.
15 Förmännen gick då till Farao och klagade inför honom: Varför behandlar du oss så här illa?
16 Vi får inte längre någon halm, och ändå måste vi göra lika mycket tegel som förut. Man slår oss för något som inte är vårt fel. Det är ju fogdarnas fel, som ger sådana orimliga befallningar.
17 Men Farao svarade: Ni har inte tillräckligt att göra! Varför skulle ni annars säga att ni vill gå ut i öknen och offra till Herren?
18 Gå tillbaka till ert arbete nu. Halm kommer ni inte att få, men ni ska leverera lika mycket tegel som ni gjort förut.
19 Då förstod förmännen att de verkligen hamnat i en besvärlig situation.
20 När de träffade Mose och Aron, som stod och väntade på dem utanför Faraos palats,
21 svor de åt dem och sa: Herren ska straffa er för att ni ställt till det på det här sättet för oss. Farao hatar oss! Nu har han och hans män fått en anledning att döda oss.
22 Mose vände sig då till Herren och sa: Herre, hur kan du handla så illa mot ditt eget folk? Varför sände du alls hit mig när du ändå gör så här?
23 Sedan jag talade med Farao första gången har han blivit allt grymmare mot dem, och du har inte räddat dem!
