⁵ You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me^{(A) 6} but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation^[a] of those who love me and keep my commandments.^(B)

⁷ In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace^(A)

¹⁸ You show steadfast love to the thousandth generation^[a] but repay the guilt of parents into the laps of their children after them, O great and mighty God whose name is the Lord of hosts,^(A)

⁹ If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.^(A)

The Consuming Wrath of God

¹⁹ “Forgive the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have pardoned this people, from Egypt even until now.”^(B)

²⁰ Then the Lord said, “I do forgive, just as you have asked;^{(C) 21} nevertheless, as I live and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord,^{(D) 22} none of the people who have seen my glory and the signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness and yet have tested me these ten times and have not obeyed my voice ²³ shall see the land that I swore to give to their ancestors; none of those who despised me shall see it.
