Good News Translation
The Lord Orders Israel to Leave Mount Sinai
33 (A)The Lord said to Moses, “Leave this place, you and the people you brought out of Egypt, and go to the land that I promised to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and to their descendants. 2 I will send an angel to guide you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 3 You are going to a rich and fertile land. But I will not go with you myself, because you are a stubborn people, and I might destroy you on the way.”
4 When the people heard this, they began to mourn and did not wear jewelry any more. 5 For the Lord had commanded Moses to tell them, “You are a stubborn people. If I were to go with you even for a moment, I would completely destroy you. Now take off your jewelry, and I will decide what to do with you.” 6 So after they left Mount Sinai, the people of Israel no longer wore jewelry.
The Tent of the Lord's Presence
7 Whenever the people of Israel set up camp, Moses would take the sacred Tent and put it up some distance outside the camp. It was called the Tent of the Lord's presence, and anyone who wanted to consult the Lord would go out to it. 8 Whenever Moses went out there, the people would stand at the door of their tents and watch Moses until he entered it. 9 After Moses had gone in, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the door of the Tent, and the Lord would speak to Moses from the cloud. 10 As soon as the people saw the pillar of cloud at the door of the Tent, they would bow down. 11 The Lord would speak with Moses face-to-face, just as someone speaks with a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp. But the young man who was his helper, Joshua son of Nun, stayed in the Tent.
The Lord Promises to Be with His People
12 Moses said to the Lord, “It is true that you have told me to lead these people to that land, but you did not tell me whom you would send with me. You have said that you know me well and are pleased with me. 13 Now if you are, tell me your plans, so that I may serve you and continue to please you. Remember also that you have chosen this nation to be your own.”
14 The Lord said, “I will go with you, and I will give you victory.”
15 Moses replied, “If you do not go with us, don't make us leave this place. 16 How will anyone know that you are pleased with your people and with me if you do not go with us? Your presence with us will distinguish us from any other people on earth.”
17 The Lord said to Moses, “I will do just as you have asked, because I know you very well and I am pleased with you.”
18 Then Moses requested, “Please, let me see the dazzling light of your presence.”
19 (B)The Lord answered, “I will make all my splendor pass before you and in your presence I will pronounce my sacred name. I am the Lord, and I show compassion and pity on those I choose. 20 I will not let you see my face, because no one can see me and stay alive, 21 but here is a place beside me where you can stand on a rock. 22 When the dazzling light of my presence passes by, I will put you in an opening in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take my hand away, and you will see my back but not my face.”

33 And the Lord said unto Moses, Depart, and go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it:
2 And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:
3 Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way.
4 And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.
5 For the Lord had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.
6 And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb.
7 And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the Lord went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.
8 And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle.
9 And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses.
10 And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door.
11 And the Lord spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.
12 And Moses said unto the Lord, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight.
13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.
14 And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.
15 And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.
16 For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.
17 And the Lord said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.
18 And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.
19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.
20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
21 And the Lord said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:
22 And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:
23 And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.

Moses Meets with the Lord
7 Moses took his tent and pitched it outside the camp, far from the camp, and (K)called it the tabernacle of meeting. And it came to pass that everyone who (L)sought the Lord went out to the tabernacle of meeting which was outside the camp. 8 So it was, whenever Moses went out to the tabernacle, that all the people rose, and each man stood (M)at his tent door and watched Moses until he had gone into the tabernacle. 9 And it came to pass, when Moses entered the tabernacle, that the pillar of cloud descended and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord (N)talked with Moses. 10 All the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the tabernacle door, and all the people rose and (O)worshiped, each man in his tent door. 11 So (P)the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he would return to the camp, but (Q)his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tabernacle.
The Promise of God’s Presence
12 Then Moses said to the Lord, “See, (R)You say to me, ‘Bring up this people.’ But You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, (S)‘I know you by name, and you have also found grace in My sight.’ 13 Now therefore, I pray, (T)if I have found grace in Your sight, (U)show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is (V)Your people.”
14 And He said, (W)“My Presence will go with you, and I will give you (X)rest.”
15 Then he said to Him, (Y)“If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here. 16 For how then will it be known that Your people and I have found grace in Your sight, (Z)except You go with us? So we (AA)shall be separate, Your people and I, from all the people who are upon the face of the earth.”
17 So the Lord said to Moses, (AB)“I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name.”
18 And he said, “Please, show me (AC)Your glory.”
19 Then He said, “I will make all My (AD)goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. (AE)I will be gracious to whom I will be (AF)gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” 20 But He said, “You cannot see My face; for (AG)no man shall see Me, and live.” 21 And the Lord said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. 22 So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you (AH)in the cleft of the rock, and will (AI)cover you with My hand while I pass by. 23 Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall (AJ)not be seen.”

33 Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés: «Anda, sube de aquí, tú y el pueblo que has sacado de la tierra de Egipto, a la tierra de la cual juré a Abraham, a Isaac y a Jacob(A), diciendo: “A tu descendencia[a] la daré(B)”. 2 Enviaré un ángel delante de ti(C), y echaré fuera a los cananeos, a los amorreos, a los hititas, a los ferezeos, a los heveos y a los jebuseos(D). 3 Sube a una tierra que mana leche y miel(E). Pues Yo no subiré en medio de ti, oh Israel, no sea que te destruya en el camino(F), porque eres un pueblo terco[b](G)».
4 Cuando el pueblo oyó esta mala noticia[c], hicieron duelo(H), y ninguno de ellos se puso sus joyas. 5 Porque el Señor había dicho a Moisés: «Dile a los israelitas: “Ustedes son un pueblo terco(I). Si por un momento Yo me presentara[d] en medio de ustedes, los destruiría. Ahora pues, quítense sus joyas, para que Yo sepa qué he de hacer con ustedes”». 6 A partir del monte Horeb los israelitas se despojaron de sus joyas.
7 Moisés acostumbraba tomar la tienda(J), y la levantaba fuera del campamento a buena distancia de este[e], y la llamó la tienda de reunión(K). Y sucedía que todo el que buscaba al Señor salía a la tienda de reunión, que estaba fuera del campamento. 8 Cuando Moisés salía a la tienda, todo el pueblo se levantaba y permanecía de pie, cada uno a la entrada de su tienda, y seguía con la vista a Moisés hasta que él entraba en la tienda. 9 También cuando Moisés entraba en la tienda, la columna de nube(L) descendía y permanecía a la entrada de la tienda, y el Señor hablaba con Moisés(M). 10 Cuando todo el pueblo veía la columna de nube situada a la entrada de la tienda de reunión todos se levantaban y adoraban, cada cual a la entrada de su tienda.
11 Y el Señor acostumbraba hablar con Moisés cara a cara(N), como habla un hombre con su amigo. Cuando Moisés regresaba al campamento, su joven ayudante Josué(O), hijo de Nun, no se apartaba de la tienda.
Moisés responde al Señor
12 Entonces Moisés dijo al Señor: «Mira, Tú me dices: “Haz subir a este pueblo(P)”. Pero Tú no me has declarado a quién enviarás conmigo(Q). Además has dicho: “Te he conocido por tu nombre, y también has hallado gracia ante Mis ojos(R)”. 13 Ahora pues, si he hallado gracia ante Tus ojos, te ruego que me hagas conocer Tus caminos para que yo te conozca y halle gracia ante Tus ojos(S). Considera también que esta nación es Tu pueblo(T)».
14 «Mi presencia irá contigo(U), y Yo te daré descanso(V)», le contestó el Señor. 15 Entonces Moisés le dijo: «Si Tu presencia no va con nosotros, no nos hagas salir[f] de aquí(W). 16 ¿Pues en qué se conocerá que he hallado gracia ante Tus ojos, yo y Tu pueblo? ¿No es acaso en que Tú vayas con nosotros, para que nosotros, yo y Tu pueblo, nos distingamos de todos los demás pueblos que están sobre la superficie de la tierra(X)?».
17 Y el Señor respondió a Moisés: «También haré esto que has hablado, por cuanto has hallado gracia ante Mis ojos y te he conocido por tu nombre(Y)». 18 Entonces Moisés dijo: «Te ruego que me muestres Tu gloria(Z)». 19 Y el Señor respondió: «Yo haré pasar toda Mi bondad delante de ti, y proclamaré el nombre del Señor delante de ti(AA). Tendré misericordia del que tendré misericordia, y tendré compasión de quien tendré compasión(AB)». 20 Y añadió: «No puedes ver Mi rostro; porque nadie me puede ver, y vivir(AC)».
21 Entonces el Señor dijo: «Hay un lugar junto a Mí[g], y tú estarás sobre la peña(AD); 22 y sucederá que al pasar Mi gloria, te pondré en una hendidura de la peña y te cubriré con Mi mano[h] hasta que Yo haya pasado(AE). 23 Después apartaré Mi mano[i] y verás Mis espaldas; pero Mi rostro no se verá(AF)».
